Hello everyone and welcome to #Xplap! I am BEYOND excited to host tonight!
Please introduce yourself and share a fish story with us!(real or fake the Twitter world will never know!)
I do have a fish story and it is true, was out northern pike fishing with my dad. Got my line caught in a set of weeds and there was a northern who got tangled in and I brought him in. He was huge. True story. #XPLAP
Hi! Jocelyn from Toronto! One May long-wknd, friends & I went fishing on an island. Storm blew in overnight, wrecked our boat, we lost all the fish (and the beer!) and had to bail the boat out just so we wouldn't sink getting back to the mainland! #XPLAP
#XPLAP One time I was scheduled to go on a 3 hour tour with a Professor and Mary Anne... Well... It turned out to be a bit more than that! "True Story"...
A1: I'm getting more and more in room transformations. I want to full emerge students into the classroom games. They are both engaging and really take learning outside the classroom as well. #xplap
A1 I have a theme set in a dystopian future that is a narrative that is intended to take Ss out of the class experience. I'm not sure this is peaceful? Intended to raise the stakes... #xplap
We've mastered the art of yard fishing. My son wanted to play with the fishing pole so I tied a toy to it and he's gone outside on multiple occasions to practice casting and catching a "fish". That's my kind of fishing. #Xplap
A1: In our amazing race I send them on a hunt to find our destination for our first leg! Clues lead them to a location on Google Maps street view! #xplap
A1: I always have ideas for how I can do this better, but I put acceptance letters in their lockers at the beginning of the year, play ASMR HP ambiance rooms as we work, hang house point hour glasses in my room, HP professor signs at every T’s door #XPLAP
A1 cont: I will need something else next year. The game mechanics have gotten to be somewhat repetitive. Locations change, but the rest is the same. Thinking I need some magic #XPLAP
A1: The theme I'm working with now is for Travel and World Issues classes... the kids are "travel agents" who belong to agencies. It allows them to imagine traveling far and wide and explore new lands and cultures! #XPLAP
A1 - I build a story. I base it on my DM or GM experience in tabletop RPGs. But I still need some more practice and techniques to appeal to a wider audience. #XPLAP.

A1: I try to transform my room a couple times a year. So far we've climbed up Mt. Everest and flown in an airplane. We will be attempting to rescue a secret agent from a dungeon in the near future. #xplap
A2: needs to be a winner, not zero-sum. It’s ok if there is a looser, that happens. A lot of time our true character comes out when we play games and then we as educators can be there to help correct and fix. #xplap
A2 - For my students a Leveling Up system always work. I tie that up with an Access structure that allows them more if they have more level. And also the Mario Star or Trophy system is magic. Secret achievements that they can discover exploring. #XPLAP
Gotcha. I have a group of kids who started a D & D club in my room after school. I have no idea what's going on most of the time, but they love it and get a kick out of trying to teach me. I just have fun busting out my best Dwarf voice and pretending to have a huge beard. #xplap
We def. need some magic items, but with the zombies it's hard to "make them fit". That's why I'm thinking of going back to space so that I can add more easily as new civilizations are found "Seek out new civ and boldly go" and all that ;) #XPLAP
A2 Well, this is one of my favorites. Boss Fights and moving quizzes from a summative to formative effort with low stakes. #xplaphttps://t.co/k4hwAIdlG7
I combined simple easy to find Easter Eggs (carefully managed...only 4 possible per class) with scratch off cards. It created more excitement than I have seen for awhile. #XPLAP
A2: house points, public house leaderboards, spells that let them have an advantage or let them put another team (or have a chance at putting another team) at a disadvantage all help make it more...magical. Plus I really love Harry Potter and that shows 😆 #XPLAP
A2: My Ss like team competitions! I try to incorporate games that promote teamwork!! Everyone is responsible for participating & have a role in the game!! #xplap
I'm working on a SuperHero theme for next year. That'd allow many different magical items as well as some new plot twists and some avatar/ranking/mechanics that I think would be fun.... #Xplap
A3: I have Power Up Mario Mushrooms everywhere with 6 XP envelopes. I have Ss trying to earn the points to get them open and get a chance at awesome student center projects that go towards building new lessons for the classes. They love it. #XPLAP
A1 - I build a story. I base it on my DM or GM experience in tabletop RPGs. But I still need some more practice and techniques to appeal to a wider audience. #XPLAP.
I created a “game council” they keep asking me to spend time together to plan. It makes me laugh a bit as they keep it all so secret. They won’t even tell l there plans are “ready” #XPLAP
I love that idea because it was essentially three kiddos who bonded over taking charge and gaining their peers feedback to begin! #xplap What a great secret responsibility!!
A3: Play-Doh and LEGO builds, dice games (and the spells and house points that can be earned with those), the “hour glasses” that track house points publicly #XPLAP
I try to film video footage everywhere I go and just record a bunch of random stuff to fill in as needed. Went on a ghost tour of Missouri State Pen last week and recorded a bunch of "dungeon" footage. #xplap
✨A3: My students love using EdTech to demonstrate their learning! A fave is #EduGIFs. They might be flashy, but they instantly engage students with your content in a language they speak! They make learning sparkle! We've used them in a ton of different ways! #XPLAP✨
A4: Ss never know what the next spell to be released is + what power it will have. We just did a digital escape room, and a few lucky Ss with the Lumos spell who had been holding onto it for the right time were able to get T help on a task when they desperately needed it. #XPLAP
A4: I like to "accidentally" say things to my classes that give hints to next week. "You won't believe what you have to face next week...but I probably shouldn't tell you guys about it yet." #xplap
It's not often that I wish I were a primary teacher but then you see a tweet like this. Our #gamification nearly always gets relegated to digital confines thanks to shared spaces. #XPLAP
A4 - Cliffhangers! I learned from my suffering with Netflix series and Steven Universe. I leave the story from Quest to Quest hanging in the general campaign. They always end up asking WHEN IS THE NEXT QUEST WE NEED TO BEAT THE BAD GUY! #xplap
A4: essentially any twist or turn! Gaming is all about expecting the unexpected and strategizing the next move, right? #breakoutedu sessions would be great for this to gain xp or bonus packs. #xplap
#xplap A4 I always loved using my classroom calendar or daily schedule and added a phrase or special symbol: which would be a clue of what was coming up. Always leads to great conversation & speculation!
✨ A4: KEEP STUDENTS ON THEIR TOES! Mix things up and challenge yourself to try new things! Teach in a way that students know adventure awaits them the moment they walk through your door, however, leave them eager to discover the destination! #XPLAP ✨
A5 - Oh. My 1st graders are having a hard time to get involved with the library and reading. Mostly is because of the low level of English (they are Vietnamese kids). I actually still don't know how to untangle this situation. Still trying different lures. #xplap
We use our #gamification theme (either colonising Mars or Forensic Murder) to take students out of the class context. HS Chem - so lots of immersive pracs aimed at solving problems as opposed to traditional practical write-ups. #XPLAP
A5: my knot was beginning. Now that i am in, it’s just untangling the small knots. If that creates a bigger one, back to the drawing board. Nonetheless, I’m not giving up this quest. #xplap
a5) my knot is trying to get my students to buy into the game. Still trying to work on a way that works well, only getting a few (all though a bit more realized the benefit this week) #xplap
A5: We just gamified a unit for all the fifth grade classes at my school...we need to improve our optional quests (homework) to get more S's involved. #XPLAP
✨A4: GUINEA PIGS DISCOVER THE TANLGES! My co-teacher, @DebDiToro, and I always call our 1st-period class our "guinea pigs"! We try things with them, and then adjust our sails to make the rest of the day go even smoother! We teach and learn, and they roll with it! #XPLAP✨
A5: Sometimes I feel like I am just going from tangle to tangle. 😀 Some days are better than others, but learning as I go can seem a bit messy. #keepingitreal#XPLAP
I have run into this a couple times this year. It is where my temptation element (that I took from Big Brother) comes in handy. It has the ability to truly shake up the game! #XPLAP
That is always the challenge for me. This time I gave kids up to 10 points (if their project was epic-- only one got that much, but many tried) they could add on to any score. I had much more participation and now more kids are asking for side quests. #XPLAP
I ask them their feedback. So what do you want to earn next? We are trying to earn resources for our kingdom to thrive... their next resource was furniture.. umm... ok? Why not!! Furniture it is! #4thgrade#xplap
A6 We introduce some new things every once in a while. Nearing the last two months of a year long game. We have learned so much. Definitely, tooling over the summer. #xplap
they asked if they could have a notecard for the next test. I told them they'd had the ability to earn a notecard since the beginning of the year, but so far they'd all passed on it (not my favorite incentive, but last year everyone wanted them!) sidequests=gold=notecards #xplap
I need to keep my narrative going. It started off strong, then I kind of lost it on the way. I am already planning for next year. My theme is going to be much more open to plot twists. #XPLAP
✨A6: KEEP IT FUN! Try to take things they enjoy and find a way to use them in the classroom! My Ss LOVE dodgeball, so academic dodgeball was born! They get hit with a colored ball & then answer Q's or complete tasks that match that color in order to re-enter the game! #XPLAP✨
A6: I think it is the change they can make in the game! I have students doing side quests and emailing me to use their powers over spring break! #xplap
A6: Don't reveal all the twists and turns too early! Continue asking for Ss input to change up the game or add challenge. Involve "guests" to keep it fresh. Lots of mini-celebrations of achievements along the way. #XPLAP
If you all are interested, here’s another opportunity to connect during the week! #legendarychat#xplap Would love for you to come and inspire some newbs with your knowledge!
I just keep telling them that we can’t truly win without you. I might even bring them in through character names and/or traits!! If I had animations... My student live anime this year, so many characters could resemble them in an anime style! #xplap
A7 - Personalized lures. It takes some time and knowing the student. But once you get what they like, you can leave some recognizable Easter Eggs or lures. Most of the times they end up biting. #xplap
A7: Involve your disruptors by using their desire to inflict chaos into the game...instead of earning points themselves, which they may not be interested in, have them take others away. #XPLAP
