#Satchat is a weekly Twitter conversation for current and emerging school leaders that takes place every Saturday morning at 7:30 EST. Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
A1: My curiosity determines what I learn about. I choose my reading, listening, and viewing material based on my passions and wonderings. #satchat
How would students answer this question?
One year, we talked about the statement ..."I wonder ...." during a staff meeting and then I created visual reminders for each room to help teachers begin using those words with greater frequency. #satchat
A1: As with all things our curiosity, passion, and motivation are connected... I get up on Saturday morning to tweet with other educators because I'm curious about what I will learn and how I can contribute to this wonderful world! #satchat
A1: I try to intentionally dive into topics I donโt know much about (mostly through reading books and conversations). Helps me to be more well-rounded. #satchat
Thatโs odd. Stands to reason that @ScottRRocco would know if the #satchat were occurring - since heโs one of the main coordinators. This seems to be a DIFFERENT chat. It would only be ethical for those leading it to say so, if thatโs the case, wouldnโt it?

A1. During reflection time, ideas pop into my head that I wonder about ... seeking solutions ... and I want to dash about gaining input from as many people as I can to solve a puzzling question #satchat
A1: I have so many creative/curious thoughts, that if I donโt say them or work on them, I get really frustrated or antsy. Curiosity fuels passion and creativity. #satchat
A1. We need curiosity to interrupt the status quo. Just because we have always do something a certain way, doesnโt mean itโs best for kids. #satchat
A1: In the opening of my book I use this quote by David Cooperrider "We live in the worlds our questions create." It's always true. I move from moment to moment based on what I need to answer! #satchat#makeitreal
A1 #satchat No one I have ever read abt developed a love of learning thru coercion and compulsion. Curiosity is the fuel that feeds the learning engine. See William Glasser and Choice Theory
A1 - It helps me to go further with my learning...but, sometimes I am not curious about a subject until I am introduced to it via an expert/news/reading/etc. #satchat

Follow the question. Ex: my power tailgate on minivan broke. For a day I did all it took to figure out how to fix it. Then I ordered the part and fixed it myself. Never WANTED to learn how to do that, but needed to. Same for Ss. Create a need to answer the Q #satchat
Mostly curious about how I can help lead my school / school system to be more equitable and produce results that benefit ALL students. Thanks for the question.
absolutely! i'm curious about how interactions with technology (interventions) can improve the behavior of the juveniles I work with. For example, maker space tools. #satchat
We love this quote from @john_hattie: "Expert teachers are not wedded to specific teaching strategies โ rather, they regularly focus on evaluating the effects they have on students, and adjust teaching methods accordingly." https://t.co/YDnXGGBghj#edchat#lrnchat#4IR#satchat
A1:Curiosity sometimes can lead me into some interesting rabbit holes- it takes practice to discern whatโs info is relevant in this Information Age! #satchat
A2: Questions drive learning. IT's that simple. Otherwise we're just transferring info to kids. I ask Unanswerable Qs to drive investigation. And I never ask a Q that can be answered with < 3 words in under 3 sec. #satchat
A2 - Questioning is great for formative assessment...to inform myself and the students what they know/don't know...can lead to more efficient/effective studying and class discussions/activities. #satchat
A2: We strive for DOK in all of our questions... Students must be able to explain their understanding of the world and ask big and small questions that will lead them to new understanding... #satchat
A2. Please - PLEASE try to highlight this challenging situation and have teachers come up with possible solutions that could shift the tide. Begin by working on this 1st. #satchat
Diana, I think this is such a great point! That has me thinking... maybe there is a difference between curiosities and Curiosities. Things that capture our attention in the short term versus things that drive attention in the long term? #satchat
A2 Always start with student questions! If you arenโt tapping into heir curiosity, you might as well be speaking to an empty room. Kids need to be invested in the content, actively looking for answers to their own questions #satchat
A lot of people have great ideas that, if executed the right way, would be wildly successful. What they lack, however, is the patience and/or skillsets to bring it to fruition. #startups#satchat
Hi #satchat Michele here from Cental PA A1: My curiosity leads me down paths of exploration that lead to my creativity. Itโs organized chaos up in here
A2. We're looking to implement an Innovation period. Where Ts will create classes and Ss will have choice to choose the one they want participate in. #satchat
A6: My plan is to start the process of instituting โOne Wordโ in our district, building, and classrooms. Also looking at ways to implement โThe No Complaining Ruleโ. Finally, Iโm will be looking into providing staff with The Positive Dog and The Energy Bus. @JonGordon11#satchat
A2. After spending time shifting that initial challenging situation we can begin to approach higher order questioning. You might want to save some of these. #satchat
#satchat A2 I use the Question Formulation Technique from @RightQuestion . Ss also drive questioning with Soc. Seminars of their own ?s. We learn terms: Open, Closed, Divergent, Convergent, Fat, Skinny, Probing, etc...
Not always. Sometimes when working together they need to be able to respond with procedural or helpful instant feedback. This is more for me. It eliminates Call/Response teaching and fill-in-the-blank instruction. #satchat
A2 cont: Itโs less important that they actually find the answers than the simple fact they are looking for them. They will be more invested and work hard to understand. Very unit/lesson should involve kids asking questions! #satchat
Calling it a โhackโ doesnโt make deceiving #satchat participants funny. One would expect more from educators. I didnโt know who the #HackingPBL authors were before and now Iโll make it my business to avoid them and their work. I like ethics with my education.

#satchat Great question. Esp. for Elem. and MS. But I agree w @DonWettrick on Passion Projs. in HS: an hour a week or 20% time isn't enough. HS Ss need a class: I ran one last year and am proposing agin for this year.
It does seem that in adulthood people are less likely to publicly discusses their curiosities. Are they no longer curious or afraid to share or something else? #satchat
A3: Why am I doing this? Is it worth doing? What do I want to learn or make from this? How can I tell the story of this? Is this just for me, my Ss, both? #satchat
A2. Or ... purchase this book for each grade level team and if THEY DECIDE to focus on that topic during the PLC work they will have a resource ready to go. #satchat
A2. Before stakeholders can ask honest and change provoking questions they need to feel that itโs ok to take a risk. Ps play a huge part in creating these risk taking conditions. #satchat
#satchat A2 I use the Question Formulation Technique from @RightQuestion . Ss also drive questioning with Soc. Seminars of their own ?s. We learn terms: Open, Closed, Divergent, Convergent, Fat, Skinny, Probing, etc...
A3: Will this matter toward the things I really care about - my personal mission? Will this bring me joy? If the answer is yes to both, I dive in. If no in either respect, I'm trying to learn to say no. #satchat
A2. As a principal for 26 years I came to understand how VERY important questioning was in a classroom setting so I collected tons of resources to share with staff about it over the years. #satchat
A3: I ask myself, is this about me or the school community? Because sometimes personal interest does not match community needs. I also ask, does this match our Mission, Vision, Values, Goals? #satchat
A3: Questions I ask during creative/innovative endeavours...What inspired me? What purpose might this serve? What is my new learning here? How can I make a positive impact on others through this endeavour? #satchat
How can I improve my pedagogy and innovation to keep Ss continually motivated to learn and achieve. Innovative classrooms are where the best learning occurs. Teachers need to step out of their comfort zone. #satchat
I think at times it is a little of both. We need to make sharing safe and stop doing things as they always have just because thatโs how theyโve been done that way. #satchat
How can I improve my pedagogy and innovation to keep Ss continually motivated to learn and achieve. Innovative classrooms are where the best learning occurs. Teachers need to step out of their comfort zone. #satchat
A3b When my as ask me โif they may do somethingโ in their work, I always reply โwhoโs the artist? This is a good ? To ask my self as well! #satchat
A3 #satchat questions I ask, esp. when writing: Is this boring to me? For whom am I writing? What if I said it this way? In my pedagogy I ask: What will I learn if I try this? Are my risks calculated? Is this space, these Ss ready to risk with me?
A3 It depends on the situation Iโm trying to improve. I find that most innovation arises from either a problem or a new opportunity. I ask a lot of โWhat ifโs #satchat
Our good friends @MurphysMusings5 and @RossCoops31 are our hosts when we are off. They often use a combo of hashtag and #satchat is one of them. Thanks guys!
Nothing unethical here... we had permission to host the chat today. We used to use the satchathack hashtag on these days, but it confused people... although, I guess this did too :-) Have a happy New Year!

I think at times it is a little of both. We need to make sharing safe and stop doing things as they always have just because thatโs how theyโve been done. That just doesnโt make any sense to me. #satchat
My childrenโs district calls it a Zero Period- need to look into length and frequency- โค๏ธ this idea bc it truly enables T to become facilitator! #satchat
Creativity and innovation in education are fantastic. And they will serve our children well. We must add another layer, and allow students the opportunity to feel the joy that comes from using those skills to help others. This is truly what our education system needs. #satchat
A3. Is this best for kids? Will this excite Ss? Will this empower Ss? What are the logistics? (the best laid plans can be derailed without them. #satchat
We have also tried to be deliberate about giving our teachers the opportunity to explore their curiosities professionally. Adding value to life long learning #satchat
I feel a lot of this goes back to the notion that we need to have all the answers or be able to defend what we are doing. We need to take a deep breath and just chat, explore, and try without fear #satchat
A3a: I also like to question what we are currently doing. Why are we doing this? What is the end goal of this? Can we do this better? Do we even need to do this now? #satchat
Thank you for these questions! I am a big believer in finding the fun in everything I do! I have recently been wondering about fun and grit. Can gritty work be fun? #satchat
#satchat A2 I use the Question Formulation Technique from @RightQuestion . Ss also drive questioning with Soc. Seminars of their own ?s. We learn terms: Open, Closed, Divergent, Convergent, Fat, Skinny, Probing, etc...
Sorry you feel that way but as an original founder of #satchat we have appreciated our guest hosts. They do a great job with the convo. We miscommunicated on the hashtag being used this morning.
#satchat or #satchathack = great learning.

I think you are on to something here, for sure. Do you think time plays a factor? It takes a lot less time to just let someone tell you what to do. Grappling with ideas is more work. #satchat
A4 #satchat Risk taking is easier when groups are involved. Create a culture where failure is always in a forward direction. Say, as I used to in our museum trips: "I've never done this before, but I'm game...how about you?" When risk involves T and Ss, we're all learning.
A4. Modeling day in and day out, through your own actions. Are you doing the exact same things in your school that were done a decade before? What was it that Yoda said? #satchat
Omg! Michele! Yes! Why do we have to have all things figured out?? Why canโt we just openly say weโre going to try something out, play with an idea awhile, and see what becomes of it. I am totally comfortable saying that to students. They are not afraid! #satchat
.@charliekirk11: "What this president has done is truly historic, and if a Democrat president achieved 1/10th of what @POTUSโ has done over this last year, the [media] would say: 'It would be one of the most amazing first years of a presidency we've ever seen.'"
We spend a lot of time focused on the #creativity and #innovation needed for education in the future in @teaching4IR. It's a major theme in the book. As technology advances, we need to keep the best of humanity at the heart of education systems and schools. #satchat
Weโre always grappling with ideas though, whether or not it is sanctioned. If Ts donโt have time to grapple together, they will do it in their own, and your perfect top-down mandate will become fragmented, disjointed, and probably riddled with resentments! #satchat

A4: I try to encourage, model and support academic risk-taking. If the teacher isnโt afraid to take risks, students will be more likely to embrace challenges and take risks in their learning. #satchat
Time does play a factor but #edcamp style trainings are awesome! I also love to have โsip and shareโ sessions-Coffee and teacher brought in ideas! If you like an idea, you know now who can train you to do it in your room. And #pineapplecharts work wonders! #satchat
A4. Share stories with students of real life examples you have lived through - what if you had never challenged yourself - what would you have become? #satchat
Emily, this is where my mind goes as well. The gritty for a purpose - tied to something with meaning. Gritty doesn't apply to 100 arbitrary word problems. #satchat
Diana, I think this is such a great point! That has me thinking... maybe there is a difference between curiosities and Curiosities. Things that capture our attention in the short term versus things that drive attention in the long term? #satchat
This is a great point Chris! When a problem is present, the atmosphere in a meeting often becomes tense. How do you handle that? What leadership moves do you make to focus on exploration? #satchat
I love the sip and share idea! We started BYOM (bring your own mug) mornings for building morale but this could surely be an extension. I would love to know more #satchat
A4: We also need to create a classroom environment that is safe for risk-taking. How do we define failure? What supports do students have available? Do students have choice? #satchat
A5: Cardboard boxes. Trash that can be recycled. Paint. An internet connection. Toothpicks. Clay. Really, to help students develop #creativity, the materials are much less important than the culture and mindset. #satchat
Emily, this is where my mind goes as well. The gritty for a purpose - tied to something with meaning. Gritty doesn't apply to 100 arbitrary word problems. #satchat
Sorry all! I'm living in the world created by my kids questions now. Can we have breakfast? What are you writing? Can I have milk? Why don't I have milk yet? See you alter #satchat
I am a fan of flexible learning spaces and establishing a reflection board, where Ss can reflect on what they have learnt and what they would like to learn. This can be incorporated into all subjects. #satchat
A4: I started an open art studio time once a cycle where the only rule is leave the room the way you found it. Students have full access to explore making of any kind. #satchat
@writer24run check out these terms: "Sip and Share" and "BYOM" (bring your own mug) LOVE it! Maybe when can create a "Cart of Curious" and bring it to team meetings? #satchat

A5 it is how you present and lead into a lesson...give them a small intro the day before. Let them ponder what is to come. Students will be dying to find out what is waiting for them the next day. #satchat
A5. When I see a staff member doing something that is innovative or creative I will get them to share at a staff meeting or I take a pic and talk about it in a Monday morning memo. Itโs important to share the great work that is happening in our school. #satchat
@RossCoops31 I believe that promoting voice and choice with our students begins with providing voice and choice for Prof. Learning opportunities for our teachers. That needs to be an organizational culture change supported by district admins. #satchat
Feature your libraryโs brand new books or a specific genre collection with this Animated Book Covers display. The display is made on Google Slides. It is a slideshow with preset animations on each book cover. #satchat#librarylife#tlchathttps://t.co/PAXsIol8xe
A4: We believe one of the most important tools for teaching #creativity is passion. Build passion. Share passion. Develop passion. Then allow students to turn it loose on problems they would like to solve. #satchat#teaching4IR
A5b. #satchat To be sure, Cr8ve thinking is all about connections. Classrooms rich in varied content, like Verrochio's studio was for Leonardo, would be masterful learning environments. I strive for such Renaissance atmospheres
A5 we just did the #playfoamchallebge in kindergarten. We were given free playfoam! All as from kindergarten to 5th grade have had the same reaction to it. #satchat
A1: My personal curiosity affects my life because I find as an Instructional Technology Coach I'm always asking. "How can this benefit Ts &/or Ss?" #satchat
A4: Our students will take risks, assume challenges & be most creative when they feel safe and secure in who and what surrounds them. We create open/clear minds in our kids by making our classrooms/offices and ourselves these sources of security for our kids. #satchat#LoveWorks
#satchat Recently did a design project with grade 10. At debrief, student said having to make something out of what was available in the prototype portion made her more creative.
Problems are often best solved when we work together...the best possible solutions are in the room...great strength in the team, especially when we believe in ourselves and each other! #satchat
A5. Accumulated learning is like an incomplete jigsaw, with untidy gaps and potentials. When classroom resources -- incl. good Qs, stories -- suggest any potential for personal housekeeping and tidier learning, we become โcuriousโ and inspired to discern connections. #satchat
Yay! Love it! Makes me excited too! PTSO is great for supplying coffee cart items and possibly some amazon gift cards in case a few items are needed to get a new idea up and running. #satchat
What do students think is important for them to learn about? How much of whatโs important to them t do they learn in school? If itโs not in the curriculum, how can we help them access that knowledge? #satchat
A4 Best words I heard from an Admin was "I got your back-try it" This enabled me to feel comfortable to take risks, embrace failure, and iterate the process #satchat
A5c #satchat Anything related to design thinking. this is Applied Creativity -- creativity used to find and solve problems and always
'with" the users, not merely "for" them. Can't praise @extraordinaires enough in making this easy for many others to grasp!
A6 - Going to work on more formative assessment (retrieval practice, spaced practice, etc.) in the classroom...provides for students assessing their level of understanding. #satchat
#OneThingIAlwaysSay Is Paul Ryanโs a smug, soulless, spineless, ALLEGED Christian, Eddie Munster looking, TOTAL tool whoโs incapable, unwilling & unable to do the right thing EVER EVER EVER....

A2: Questioning plays a huge part in my school because I find as an Instructional Technology Coach I have found a lot of the same techniques I used as a classroom T transfer over to my questioning as a #STAFFORDITRT. #satchat
A6. Excited to create my #oneword2018 before tomorrow evening. Please check out the hashtag if you haven't already. Need some food for thought? https://t.co/W1SjMUNzK2#satchat
A2a: I have found the questioning helps most. Though I'm finding some Ts just want the answer or for me to do it, so just like knowing my Ss I need to know the Ts I work with. #satchat
