#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Hello. My name is Kenny Bosch. Co-author of the book and co-host of the #personalizedPD chat.

Hi #PersonalizedPD! I'm Kristen from Spring Grove, PA (close to @autumn_zam ). I'm an instructional tech specialist looking for ideas about making our PD meaningful and relevant for our teachers!
Hi. I'm Jason Bretzmann. Teacher and Co-author of the #personalizedPD book. I'm your host for the chat along with @kennybosch Looking forward to @autumn_zam moderating tonight's chat!
A1: We just had 1/2 day PD that was dept specific and many Ts were excited to have something specific to their content and extended time in vertical PLCs. #personalizedpd
A1: We recently hosted an edcamp with our instructional leadership team and it turned out to be very effective. They participated actively and were professional, open minded, and respectful! Lots of learning occurred! #personalizedpd
I ❤️ @breakoutEDU! I have gotten my kids hooked on the #digitalbreakout and now they ask for them and have been making some to review concepts as a class! #personalizedPD need to create some for PD yet

A2: I think leading by example (with a smile) is the best practice. That way others will see the great things you are doing and want to join in! :) #personalizedpd
A1: Always love #patioPD in the summer & #firesidepd in the winter. Authentic learning, collaborative, & exactly what everybody needs. Fun too! #personalizedPD
A2: Give teachers some voice and choice for PD but create a consistent message throughout. Have high expectations but provide high levels of support! #personalizedPD
Our admin started a version of pineapple chart. It was required during one of their PLC times to observe another teacher. I think teachers like the opportunity to see what others were doing. #personalizedpd
A2: Create a structure where teachers learn from one another. We use a Pineapple Calendar throughout the semester, and we did a mini-professional conference on a PD day, during which every teacher presented. #personalizedPD
A2. Just mentioned this in #pln365. A colleague and I are getting a pineapple board installed in the mailroom for mini-pd sessions that everyone could participate in. #personalizedPD
A2: It's important to let Ts choose learning opportunities that they are passionate about whenever possible just like we do for our Ss. I also think we have to model a growth mindset and never stop learning new things. #personalizedPD
A2: Create a culture of learning by sharing out great things others are doing and offer to free up teacher leaders to coteach in another room to share the wealth! #PersonalizedPD
Sweet! Let me know how I can help with #patioPD we have a free "toolkit" at https://t.co/qIFlXKjbAb that we use for the International PatioPD Day, but it will work for all patiopd #personalizedPD
A2 recognize that PD is about development of the profession, not individuals, embrace human centered design, and invite / create space for all to collectively build the professional space #personalizedPD
A2: It’s always about being a model of that. Keep learning yourself AND share that learning. Help foster a culture of educators sharing their learning. #BetterTogether#personalizedPD
A2: Have a support structure for new teachers so you can help them understand and thrive in the collaborative culture of your school. We have a new-teacher cohort that meets monthly. #personalizedPD
It's relaxing & powerful learning. You can have "Help me set up twitter, How do I use it for EDU, & What are the best ways to run a twitter chat" all in the same group! #personalizedPD
A2: Give teachers some voice and choice for PD but create a consistent message throughout. Have high expectations but provide high levels of support! #personalizedPD
A2: Oh, gosh! I wish I had pictures!! There are so many wonderful, student-involved bulletin boards and whole-class wall art! We start each day as a building with mantra and The Pledge. We have started the process of being a trauma-informed school. #personalizedPD
A3: @thompson_shs and I are trying to see if social media increases student engagement/achievement this past school year through our doctorate. #personalizedPD
A3: My fellow K teachers don't have Twitter but we are transitioning from half-day to full-day kindergarten next year! :) @K1PrincipalWY#personalizedpd
A3: I'm starting a TacoEDU for teachers to get together and share ideas while we eat yummy food. I couldn't do it without @jcooksbooks@mrsbuckenham and @JanieShiflett. They are my tribe and biggest supporters! #personalizedPD
A3: They don't have twitter, but my amazing teammates in fourth grade and I are working on implementing Inquiry based learning in science and math as well as PBL in language arts! #personalizedpd
Q1: (late, I know) - My favorite PDs are almost always learning space centered. How to create or reimagine a new space for not just students or teachers, but humans. #personalizedPD
A3 @SrtaLyon and I are both @Flipgrid Ambassadors and we have been leading the way in modeling the use of Flipgrid to amplify student voice. #personalizedpd
A4: Since I am leading and planning PD I usually am sure to ask reflective questions in a form for staff to set goals from their PD and ask them if they want support of a coach to continue their learning. Many request follow up meetings. #personalizedPD
A4: I try to choose 1 item to implement immediately and 1 idea to start working on for a future unit, so that I have time to shape it into a product that works for both me and my students. #personalizedPD
A4: If I am presenting, I make sure to try and follow up with the teachers to see if they are doing ok implementing or need additional guidance. If I'm learning, I write myself a post-it and stick it on my desk #personalizedPD
A4: Take what I like and feel comfortable implementing now and start from the bottom. Everything else I put on an endless to-do list of something to research over my summer "vacation." #personalizedpd
A4: I tweet about it and make connections with like-minded individuals who are using the same tool and reflect with them on the implementation. #personalizedPD
A4: Choose one unit in one subject area and go all in. We work out the kinks and then have a clear plan for implementing in cross-curricular and long term settings. #personalizedpd
It's time for the #Lurker shoutout!
We love our Lurkers at #personalizedPD
You don't have to share a novel but we would love to hear your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
If you check out my media and provide some real feedback (good or bad) Autumn will send you $100. She just messaged me and said that. How generous is our mod? Wow! #PersonalizedPD
A4. District implemented- usually on their timetable. My #personalizedpd is more fluid. Depending on comfort with what I want to do, I’ll try it right away and reflect on changes. Bigger ideas I’ll beta test with a few Ss (like switching to #standardsbasedgrading).
We always start with some open ended questions like this picture, or something that allows for teachers to continue to ask questions as they begin planning. #personalizedpd
A4 I usually start getting ideas during the pd session and then I implement them when I return to school. I usually start sharing with colleagues right away. #personalizedpd
A4: I want to have a buying mentality, not shopping. I don’t want to roam aimlessly at the base of the mountain. I need to set my sights on the summit (positive effects on learner outcomes)! #personalizedPD
Yes, and the power of #patioPD is that it allows that diverse group to be where they are with it AND get what they need. The autonomy, mastery, and purpose of #personalizedPD
A4: The other ITSs and I try to follow up with teachers a week or two after PD to check in and see if there is anything the teachers need...usually a get a "No, I"m good..." We would like to make that more meaningful. #personalizedpd
A5: we have 4 pillars of PD and tried having ppl pick and track their pd through these 4 pillars of interest, it didn't work as well as i had hoped. I am looking for ideas on this one! #personalizedpd
A5: I keep notes on my laptop both of what is being presented and how I could use it. My reflection is lacking unless it is something I immediately implement. #personalizedPD
RT LearningAccel: A4: PersonalizeDISD offers its Personalized Learning Coaching and Development Tool with strategies for goal setting https://t.co/KWfousucpz#PersonalizedPD
A5: I keep a notebook for each school year. I have a mailing label on the front where I inventory the PD in each one, so I can go back to it when I need to. #personalizedPD
Q5: Never even thought about keeping track of my PD sessions. I guess I should create a system! For a conference I wrote my notes in a @googledocs, when I attend webinars I usually get a certificate or a completion e-mail that I save in a folder. #personalizedpd
A5 I try to keep my website updated with sessions I have attended. To reflect I enjoy blogging. I also enjoy coffee and chatting with teacher friends. It is different for every session! #personalizedpd
A5: I usually keep a stack of @Postit , a google sheet, and general notes that I use to reflect and make sure I implement within a certain timeframe. #personalizedPD
I think there are multiple 1st steps in this work. 1.Ask Ts what they need 2.Intro options & let Ts explore & apply to their area 3.Plan for future needs & continued improvement 4.Create opportunities to collaborate where needs are common 5.Learn who will share++ #personalizedPD
A5 I keep track of my trainings on the @MicrosoftEDU MEC page. It actually allows you to print a transcript of all the courses taken. I reflect by sharing with colleagues. #personalizedpd
A5: When I am at a PD session or on my own #personalizedPD I go #oldschool & use paper & pen for tech to look into.
I have a simple Google Doc where I keep track of useful tech tools.
#personalizedPD
A5: I kind of rely on twitter to refresh my PD memory. People retweet previous learning which jogs my memory about an idea to revisit something ❤️ #PersonalizedPD
A5. Can’t lie I don’t always keep track. Partly due to the value I place on the pd. Sit and get usually gets lost somewhere. When I read my own choices or chats, I take notes, make adjustments to things and keep all versions just in case. #personalizedpd
A6: I like that many times throughout the semester that we are able to be in charge of our learning and choose topics that we want to investigate. #personalizedPD
Want to personally invite each of you wonderful #personalizedPD chatters to submit a story for the #storiesinEDU book contest. Your favorite EDU story to be published & shared with the world. Submit here by April 29! https://t.co/qcPmZOOhnt
I wish I could make PD into a time that
A. teachers look forward to
B. teachers enjoy
C. teacher get something positive out of (not just curriculum) #personalizedpd
Q6: PD in my school is forced. We are told where to go and what to do. At a previous job I liked their take on #personalizedpd where we were given time to create our own PD plan and work on that on an inservice day.
Calling all professors, teachers and educators! Are you ready for a new level of engagement from your students? Set creative assignments, share resources and organise research for free! Visit https://t.co/LwlRPeKqUR to find out more
Q6: more flexibility with the logistics. ProDev shouldn't always be in the media center at this time on this date. What about walking meetings? Being outdoors or at a bar / restaurant after hours? Comped... that's when you get real, brutal honesty from peeps. #PersonalizedPD
Agree, Kristen. The key is #personalizedPD and CHOICE. Teachers look forward to PD when it is actual PD and NOT a meeting. It does matter what we call our time together.

The stories are starting to come in for the BOOK CONTEST & they are fantastic. Some chuckles. Some tears. A 100% commitment to the fact that teachers are doing great work inside our classrooms! https://t.co/UcV0UXckaW#personalizedPD
A7:PD is anywhere anytime. I receive inspiration while traveling, doodling, hiking, reading, talking, experiencing life so I have more ways to connect with all types! #PersonalizedPD
A7: I would like to have conversations like this with my teachers! I think I'm going to steal @autumn_zam's #patioPD idea this summer!! #personalizedpd
A6: I’m lucky to work at @OWNovacekOWLS because our PD is very progressive and reflective our building needs. @MaBlackOW is planning an EdCamp for us on Monday! It’s all about freedom and choice! #personalizedPD
Don't over think it. It's your favorite story about your classes that you like to tell. We'll just amplify it and share it with the world! You got this. #personalizedPD
You should start up a #patioPD group this summer and help yourself and other educators get exactly what they want. Connect w/@jbretzmann & me for more info.

Sounds awesome! You have some great leaders there in @OWNovacekOWLS and @MaBlackOW
If we could connect somehow during your PD day, that would be fun.
