Hi, #WonderChat friends. I'm Carol ELA Consultant & @Wonderopolis Wonder Lead Ambassador from #NYEDChat's Moderating desk. I'm trying 2 juggle both platforms tonight 2 be part of the chat on #poetry w my fellow ambassador, @Citizensowls. (Have been in creativity zone all day.)
A1 I teach teachers so I share with them various collaborative activities to encourage the writer to release their thoughts poetically. Proud to be one of the @PomeloBook poets in the newly released book, Great Morning! Poems for School Leaders to Read Aloud. #WonderChat
A1: When I was a Kinder teacher, we taught poetry in every literacy unit. Some poetry came from the curriculum but I always found other texts to share. #WonderChat
A1: I also loved showing my older students video of poets reading their poetry. Videos are a great way to bring some life into a potentially intimidating read. #WonderChat
A1. One of the most wonderful resources I know for teaching about poetry (and art and science) is The Private Eye! https://t.co/jx2MWURi2L There is so much wisdom and beauty here. #WonderChat#Poetry
A1 Lots of poetry happening in my K classroom all year. We study one poem in depth each week, I read poetry every day during read aloud time, and we write poetry across our curriculum. We are usually inspired by nature, but by other subjects, too! #WonderChat
A1 I try to expose Ss to a variety of poetic styles and art forms, then we often do our own work inspired by that work. Poetry also can be a great way to cover grammar topics/parts of speech in a different context #WonderChat
As a K-5 librarian, I teach poetry by reading poems to my students and allowing them to experiment with poetry (Found Poems, Blackout Poems, etc.) #WonderChat
A1: And when I taught 3rd grade, I loved using music to teach poetic devices! From hip-hop to country, there are a lot of poetic devices in contemporary music! #WonderChat
A1 I try to expose Ss to a variety of poetic styles and art forms, then we often do our own work inspired by that work. Poetry also can be a great way to cover grammar topics/parts of speech in a different context #WonderChat
A1 Immerse them in poetry. Ask them what they notice and love about the poems. Encourage them to have conversations about poems and poetry. #Wonderchat
Thank you. That was a fun challenge...poem a day each from the @Wonderopolis wonders! @Wonderopolis is chock full of cool information, so there are endless poem ideas to find! Read a wonder, write a poem! #WonderChat

@Citizensowls, @Wonderopolis, @Wonderopolis, @Wonderopolis
I LOVE when you give us a glimpse of what is happening in your classroom. There is nothing better than sharing and listening to a poem a day. #WonderChat
A1: Because I know that she is here and celebrating the works of others, I am going to celebrate @amylvpoemfarm's POEMS ARE TEACHERS. I used this book extensively last spring for my James Castle-themed multigenre writing project. WONDER-ful resource! Highly-recommend. #WonderChat
A1 We incorporated #poetry into our restorative circles practices - read a line and pass it around for a class reading + discussion. Great way to build community! #WonderChat
Hi #wonderchat! Sarah popping in. A1. We did a unit on poetry, with a figurative language project using popular music, and ended with a poetry slam complete with instruments.
Definitely! In our poetry project @PenpalSchools we introduce students to Nobel prize winning poets and poet laureates from around the world. These
poets are often not included in the standard curriculum... #WonderChat
It is important to read and offer students many poems that do not rhyme...they can use these as mentors. Check out Kristine George, Janet Wong, Nikki Grimes, James Stevenson, Jean Little, Valerie Worth....more. #WonderChat

Thank you, Paul. @Heinemann and I will offer a copy of this book as a giveaway for someone in this chat, if that works for you, Leticia! #PoemsAreTeachers#WonderChat
A1: Letting the Ss explore all diff. types of poetry books on different topics. Show the Ss that poetry can be about things they love! We also work on the question -Are songs poetry? Read aloud- exposes Ss to fiction written in verse. Allow Ss to make connections. #wonderchat
A1 As a 8-12 social studies teacher, I like to use war poetry with my students.
Films try to capture what combat/war was like, but there is something about the words coming directly from the soldiers and the stunning, heartbreaking imagery of them that is unequaled.
#WonderChat
Poetry is a great place to look for inspiration, or healing, or reflecting, or really any kind of #restorative practices. Poetry can be the perfect entry (or closing) point. #wonderchat
Virtually is a neat way to learn together but when you meet the virtual friend for the 1st time it is an aha moment and from there the learning explodes. Right @WymansWonders? #NYEDChat#WonderChat
Thank you, Paul. @Heinemann and I will offer a copy of this book as a giveaway for someone in this chat, if that works for you, Leticia! #PoemsAreTeachers#WonderChat
Lol! Just popped onto Twitter and was about to answer this Q1, only to see that you and I have done exactly the same type of poetry activities! Love accessing poetry through music & spoken word! #wonderchat
Don't let them pick me. And do you know how happy this makes me that someone in tonight's thread will get to the see the wonder of this collection? It only means that it will touch the teacher who will in turn share new poetic inspirations and insights with students. #WonderChat
A2 Children should be curious learners who wonder continuously. 2 encourage wonder try out @Wonderopolis' Wonders of the Day. From there children can pursue wondering & pair books 4 further reading. Love @peterhreynolds' books, especially The Word Collector
#WonderChat
A2. - I love offering history, art, and science books, articles, and photographs...all inspire. We enter new worlds through words and images...and these can all invite poems. #WonderChat
A1: Blackout poetry with @Wonderopolis articles. Intertwines nonfiction and poetry. Allows for student to explore and create poetry about a topic they wonder about. We also use old novels that need a 2nd life. #wonderchat
A2 I have to mention @amylvpoemfarm Poems are Teachers, too. It's been a wonderful support and model for me. @micha_archer 's fabulous Daniel Finds a Poem helps prime the pump for being open to seeing poetry in the world around us. #WonderChat
A2. - I love offering history, art, and science books, articles, and photographs...all inspire. We enter new worlds through words and images...and these can all invite poems. #WonderChat
That poetry was a HUGE hit with my Ss last year. They wrote an original poem every week utilizing the poetic device spotlighted for that lesson. #WonderChat@PenpalSchools

A2 I have all sorts of nonfiction to support topics my students are interested in. Nature guides, Zoobooks, even old calendars. You never know when an image will spark a poem! #Wonderchat
A1: Blackout poetry with @Wonderopolis articles. Intertwines nonfiction and poetry. Allows for student to explore and create poetry about a topic they wonder about. We also use old novels that need a 2nd life. #wonderchat
This is where Bob Raczka titles really shine, Amy. Not only his look at poetry and art, but his books like LEMONADE and WET CONCRETE that invite young poets to look at "squeezed" and "concrete" poems. #WonderChat
A2: I always have books on display in the classroom--all different genres. I switch them out once a week. You never know when a book will inspire someone & lead them down a wonder trail. #wonderchat
A3 To extend inquiry on a wonder, Ss can create a list poem, a question poem, a persona poem. Ts will introduce the poetic form & model for Ss. First attempts can be a collaborative effort. As Ss become familiar with diff. formats they can create independently. #WonderChat
A1: I exposed my students to a wide variety of poetry to show them it doesn’t look or sound just one way. Famous poets, popular songs, etc. Then, I had them write their own. One of my faves was when we used paint chips to write color poems. They were so creative! #WonderChat
Last year, we had students look at big terms from their expository subjects to see if they could find something to squeeze out of the word to create a Raczka-inspired piece. For some, it created a new lens through which they could see their subject. #WonderChat

A3. Students can study poems to see how authors: choose a point of view, structure as list or story or back and forth or other, use poetic devices... The important part is that the poem not sound like a term paper. There must still be some wonder in a wonder poem. #WonderChat
A3 In Kindergarten we write lots of list poems. When we wonder about the animals related to our campus vernal pool, we list behavior, attributes, all kinds of great facts we've learned from research. This makes poetry very accessible to my Kinder poets. #WonderChat
A3: For me, it feels like the list/category poem could rhythmically showcase findings, evidences, sources, generative questions. Again. . .@amylvpoemfarm creates wonderful list poems in her work, READ! READ! READ! #wonderchat
A3 The options are endless! "Things to do if you're a..." is one option. List poems, acrostics, poems of address are just a few that come to mind. #WonderChat
A2. Specific books, I don’t remember (haven’t done it since 2015)...I think mostly stuff in the anthology and I had them find and bring in poems and songs. They also did a lot of writing. #wonderchat
A3 I just love this question. I’m not sure I have a terrific answer. I’ve honestly not given this concept nearly enough thought but now I need it in my life. I’m thinking found poetry would be a possibility. #WonderChat
A3: Parody poems work well for showcasing a wonder as well. And the young poet need not write the whole song. Why not inviting pairings to get some musical/poetic collaborations going? Little Lennon and McCartneys. Simons and Garfunkles. #WonderChat
Q2: I LOVE to start with "Love That Dog" and "Hate That Cat". It is the perfect Segway for what is to come in our class for our #YearofPoetry#WonderChat
A3: incorporate a variety of poetry styles into art journaling which is a great way to build vocabulary writing drawing collage creativity self expression skills all in one #artsmart#wonderchat
A3: I like showing my Ss different poem types and allowing them to run with it. Their ideas about answering the wonders are always amazing! #studentvoice#wonderchat
A2 I utilize comics and graphic novels in my social studies classes along with the #warpoetry that we read.
The #harlemhellfighters graphic novel by @maxbrooksauthor is an excellent historic graphic novel to show Ss how terrifying The Great War was with the poems.
#WonderChat
Unfortunately, I don’t. :( I am currently teaching math and science. But, I used these chips. They wrote the color at the top, and the verses in the different sections.
A4 Inspire Ss who don't like #poetry by asking them 2 explore their passion. Find a @Wonderopolis WOD or bk (see below) 2 investigate the wonder. Ask them 2 write freely. I've tried this approach w/ SHS/MS disengaged Ss w positive results. #WonderChat@kwamealexander
Hi #wonderchat it’s me Liv 😍🤗 I’m just getting home from ballet but I have a few things I can share about poetry. I don’t think they fit with the questions though 🤔💗 #LivBits
That is dope! Yes, I love it as well. I have to give a huge shoutout to my friend @MusicalNanci who always supported us and let us use instruments #wonderchat

Yes. And ABOVE THE DREAMLESS DEAD is a graphic novel featuring the Trench Poets of WWI: https://t.co/f2X2f3HdJ6 Brings poetry, graphica, history, and social studies together in one. #WonderChat
A4 It is important to find poetry that relates to student interests and to give them choices in what topics to write poetry about instead of limiting their creativity with strict requirements. #WonderChat
A4 By sharing lots of different types of poems -- funny and not, rhyming and not, all subject matter. There's something for everyone! Writing class poetry helps, too. Then there's a sense of ownership when you have participated in its creation. #WonderChat
A4: Expose Ss to poetry that is about things they are interested in. I always bust out sports and funny poetry to spark interest. @Wonderopolis and blackout poetry gets them excited to explore poetry! #WonderChat
What kind of collector fan would I be if I didn't mention that Lee Bennett Hopkins has the World's Record for number of poetry anthologies for children? If your students are wondering about ______, LBH probably has a collection for that. #wonderchat
A2: I found that books I used as read alouds, both fiction and nonfiction, and having them available to the students would spark their creativity! #WonderChat
A4. I think that with time and patience, we will have no students who "don't like poetry." We just need to keep offering and giving. Giving poems to students on birthdays, holidays, just because this made me think of you... #WonderChat

Yes! @amylvpoemfarm -- don't you have a poem about an animal that met an untimely death under the wheels of a car? Live happens! And when it does, write a poem about it! #WonderChat
In reply to
@flynn_catherine, @FletcherRalph, @amylvpoemfarm
A4 exposure to a variety of different poetry types, letting students see the poetry in their world, the poetry in the mundane, in the extraordinary. #WonderChat
Maybe one of the best ways for kids to feel poetic is to sing 🎶💗 This week 500 kids sang one of my favorite songs to me. It made me shiver w/ love, words & feelings. Maybe that’s what poets feel too 🤔💗 Words live in everyone but poets are better at feeling them. #wonderchat
A4: We'd be hard-pressed to find a student who didn't get into the rhythms and wordplay of rap and hip-hop. Try Nikki Giovanni's HIP HOP SPEAKS TO CHILDREN for all ages. #wonderchat

Sometimes, Dear One can sense when we are talking about him and maybe he will pop in here for a moment. He's always good for a back story on a poem/poet from the canon/catalog. #WonderChat
A4: Popular music lyrics can easily be analyzed for figurative language/structure and dig for deeper meaning. Ss start to see poetry in the music they listen to. I love using Firework by Katy Perry. #WonderChat
I’m a dancer and this year I’m learning ballet variations for an important international competition. I’d say I’ve learned how much your body can tell a story and I feel like that’s poetry. #wonderchat#LivBits
My amazing wife, @RachelBKnoll , is doing a “Book Tasting” with her 5th graders. I’m so inspired by her that I’m going to try one with my 10th graders. #WonderChat
A4: I use song and rap (clean) lyrics, have them share their fav lyrics, & use "Love That Dog". Also, whenever my Ss learn a new poem type, they ALWAYS work w/a partner. It NEVER fails & they are writing away. #WonderChat
A4 A poetry book pass (or book tasting) has that "something for everyone" feel to it. Add in the opportunity to share a favorite newly-discovered poem with the class and elementary students are hooked! https://t.co/D4JsaZ2mma#wonderchat
A5 I've shared Ss poems on my blog and Twitter. Padlet is another option, or have a Poetry Cafe and invite families, friends, & other students. #Wonderchat
A5 I'm a huge @canva fan. It's so easy to make things look amazing! I also use @padlet and @AdobeSpark to share out collections of poetry with families. #WonderChat

A3: I loved exposing them to different types of poetry and then gave them choices of which types to use. It’s amazing to see the connections they make! #WonderChat
I think opportunities to think about the world and to really see and feel the world are there if we can be present. Whenever I take off on a plane I take a picture. Sometimes poetry dances in the sky. #wonderchat#thatsallIvegot 😂 #poetrymakesmehappyexhausted
Goodbye, all! I must run! I will send the book to the winner and in the meantime invite all to my home online - https://t.co/AHn0rYaQ4x I love publishing student work there too. Peace. Thank you, @Wonderopolis! #WonderChat

My favorite line is for we are glorious. I think I could write about how that makes my heart feel especially right now when my grandfather is very sick. I think about the word glorious in a different way now. #wonderchat 💗🌟

A5: Just a few of the platforms we use to expand Ss audience, enhance their #GlobalEd connections & skills, and get purpose feedback #WonderChat#beyondthe4walls
A low-tech mind leads to a line in time. We don't RAM to find a rhyme, just a little room. And soon. We've found a little bit of an idea hoping someone will bite. No need for USB, so long as there's you&me. #WonderChat
I think kids need poetry partners. I have one. It’s @hblang 💗 She reads my lame poems and finds ways to encourage more words in me. #wonderchat#thankyouheather 💗
A4: Usually my most hesitant poets would get on board when I showed them that the lyrics to songs they loved are actually poetry! I think showing them that they can relate to it helps so much! #WonderChat
A4: My student are loving the Kwame Alexander sports in verse verse novels Rebound, Crossover, etc. Great for reluctant/athletic but all kids love! #WonderChat
A6 Here is the "handout" I created for the poetry roundtable @matthew_arend and I ran at @ncfl last week. It's 3 types of poetry based on the "What is a Vernal Pool" wonder on @Wonderopolis . #wonderchat
If you ask them really nice, they do have a CD with just the beats on it. I have a copy in #Room407 and I will lay down some flow to them every now and then. It's the beats from the Flocabulary book (original hiphop vocab). #WonderChat
I have NEVER typed so quickly in my life. I'm STILL trying to get through all the comments. THANKS for having me and THANKS everyone for sharing!!!! #WonderChat#needanap
