Welcome to tonight's live #edchatie discussion.
As usual, before we begin, please introduce yourself and remember to include the hashtag #edchatie in all your tweets for the next hour so they can be added to the transcription afterwards.
gezz fred thought I was late to the party there for a moment 😁
any way.... evening all.
Julie, post primary; may have to dip in & out tonight. busy workload. #edchatie
No - I hit buttons too quickly and sent out wrong tweet - tonight's #edchatie live discussion on “Creativity in education - how can teachers encourage it?” is a GO!
So, let's begin tonight's live #edchatie discussion on “Creativity in education - how can teachers encourage it?”
"Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing" Georgia O’Keeffe
Creativity alive and kicking in TY maths class a few weeks ago with @breakoutEDU kits. Students also came up with their own codes/ math puzzles to break open locks #edchatie
Great fun cracking the codes while revising some different maths topics. TY students @stmarkscs1977 so engaged for the whole hour 😃 they enjoyed the sweets too 😝
@breakoutEDU
How do we encourage creativity?
I think the starting point is our own exploration - often our resistance in bringing it into a group is our own feeling of not being "creative" - however we define it #edchatie
As an Art teacher, creativity should be par for the course - however, there's a lot involved in getting to the point where creativity can take over and run the show
#edchatie
The solution to teacher shortages in Ireland is to further degrade a teachers profession by having them travel between schools to oick up what they can! Never getting the chance to forge relationships or focus on their classroom practice. #edchatiehttps://t.co/rQ0NxxAaYO
Niamh, post primary English teacher. As I correct 6th year mocks it strikes me how difficult it can be to encourage critical thinking and creativity when teaching to the exam #edchatie
We're discussing “Creativity in education - how can teachers encourage it?”
Where else would we start our live #edchatie but from the top of Blooms Taxonomy (great view from up here)
If universities aren't places for innovation then I really don't know - I also don't know why the author of this piece doesn't feel the need to suggest solutions // Higher education is being turned into an extended form of secondary school https://t.co/GO9oXbpvLq via #edchatie
I had the privilege to work in a school district that valued creativity at all levels and with different level of students. It was so common place that you took it for granted. #edchatie
In maths, creativity is giving students autonomy to solve a problem in whatever method drawing from different strands of the syllabus/specification. Using a graph/ algebra/ etc. Giving them freedom to try different methods etc
#edchatie
Time for the Irish government to wake up, reduce the pupil teacher ratio, give teachers a decent salary and increase school funding to make them conducive to learning. Spend some money on education!!! #edchatie@FineGael@fiannafailparty
#edchatie It was built into aspects of PD delivered to teachers. @jaypthomas Dir of Secondary Ed in ACPS would tell incoming tchrs at New Teacher Academy don't be afraid to take risks & don't worry about failing. It was a great way to show faith in tchrs attempts to be creative
imo fostering creativity in the classrom is about trying different things till we find what works best for a group as teens can be notoriously 'I want to be creative but need to fit in too' whereas true creativity goes outside the normal boundaries of their comfort zone
#edchatie
just recently completed a project with TY's where I gave them the brief & mark allocation at the outset & then left them to it. the majority thrived & went with it. So much so I've rejigged their scheme of work (again) to incorporate another creative brief this term #edchatie
The collaboration & deep discussion between teachers #lessonstudy process encourages creativity in our teaching. I picked up so much from working so closely with other teachers -looking at different ways they teach & solve problems #edchatie@ProjectMaths_ie
Primary Teacher Mayo. Creativity spans the entire primary curriculum. Creative writing, creative problem solving in STEM, creative visual, dramatic & musical arts, creative approaches to demonstrating learning in SESE subjects. And the original creation in R.E. #edchatie
I like how critical and creative thinking are linked in the key skills framework in Ireland & embedded in specifications. I see so much creativity in teaching in the science and maths classes I observe #edchatie
This is my concern with creativity. You need the foundational levels of this to work. And are these lower levels in place in our subjects? Are all students getting the basics first before being thrown into the creative level? #edchatie
We're discussing “Creativity in education - how can teachers encourage it?”
Where else would we start our live #edchatie but from the top of Blooms Taxonomy (great view from up here)
I would see the basics as also being cross-curricular skill-sets - soft/transversal skills that all subjects can use as well as subject-specific knowledge and skills too
#edchatie#foundationsofcreativity
We incorporate creativity into all of our workshops from an "artistic" perspective, but I agree, it is as much about problem solving and thinking critically which can be applied in any learning environment #edchatie
We're halfway through tonight's #edchatie live discussion on “Creativity in education - how can teachers encourage it?

But we do notice that the idea of creativity from an artistic point of view seems to still be v associated with female and we often see boys sideline this element to get to the tech part of the activity - which is a pity. #edchatie
As @mssweeneyhomeec alludes, giving our pupils a safe but inspiring space (not necessarily a physical space, more an overall environment) can allow them thrive, in a 'gradual release of control' sort of way. Allow pupils to see there's more than 1 way to skin a cat. #edchatie
It's a great point. I've no doubt the lower two levels are pervasive. But as teachers are we building on that knowledge and understanding so as to enable pupils to analyse, examine and evaluate? And do pupils have to in order to be creative? Possibly not? #edchatie
sorry to have missed the #edchatie so far. creativity has to come from the teacher, i think. we need to make mistakes in front of the students, try things out, be excited when it goes well.
Creativity can be stifled or promoted at all levels of education #edchatie you need to be creative with/ in something and have a desire to be creative. Not helpful to say SS teacher teaches subjects.
Yes agreed Fred. Also I find second level teachers are also held more accountable for grades, inspections and standards which drives it in that direction.
it's important to help our students view everything they do as an act of self-expression - the way they structure their sentences, the way they write their π, the way they twist the compass, the story they tell with their... #edchatie
Ouch... don't think I just teach the subject! I'm often limited to what I can do because of curriculum & time pressures bt would def say I bring an element of creativity to my lessons as do the students! I'd go off my rocker if there wasn't any excitement / variety. #edchatie
Very true!
#Creativity in #education is something that needs planning and nurturing.
Wonder if helping others to find their #creative streak means you need to sacrifice your own slightly?
Does supporting #creativity mean setting #boundaries ?
#edchatie

... history essays, the path they choose to solve their problems. Give them their voice, let them find it in everything they do. Show them each of them is, by definition, a creative being and whatever they create is to be celebrated. #edchatie
Only if you think creativity is opposite or inimical to learning. In STEM creativity is central to learning and linking conceptual understanding #edchatie we struggle with assessing it
Have to say I completely agree - I would go mad if there wasn't an element of fun and creativity to help keep students motivated and interested (and myself too).

We're into the famous final five minutes of tonight's live #edchatie discussion on “Creativity in education - how can teachers encourage it?
Any last thoughts, ideas, solutions, problems?
Looking to speak to any education experts out there about how to improve the maths curriculum and to students who have improved at the subject following initiatives, groups or clubs etc for an article #edchatie#journorequest
