Veronica Godinez joining you all tonight from Rancho Cucamonga hoping for rain to pay us a visit. I feel it in the air! And my favorite appetizer is Spinach Artichoke Dip ! And/ Or Fried Pickles! #CUECHAT
Hey hey #cuechat high school teacher librarian empowering in Cali and @fpu adjunct. LOVE jalepeno peppers. Really love when @PJMcNamaraII preps them š
A1 I have a love hate relationship with data.... I love looking at it to make change, especially observational data. Hate when data is used as a gotcha against teachers. #cuechat
A1: Data Data Data and more Data are the blueprints to our instructions. As a leader on campus we facilitated aya talks with Ts and help guide them and support them as they prepare their instruction. #cuechat
A1: I find that we often misuse the data we get as a cudgel to bully Ts into really bad instructional practices. It seems to lead to a more entrenched testing culture, and not a more robust instructional toolkit for Ts. #cuechat
A1: In my role as digital learning coach, I struggle with getting data that shows growth. Much of it is anecdotal and Ts evaluating their growth. Hard for me to answer at district level. #cuechat

A1. The kids in front of us are more than data points. There are so many daily variables that affect our class, our instruction and our results. Data is important, but it canāt be everything. #CUEchat
Welcome to my world. I don't mean to be negative, but when this is the world you live in you see the worst. Better instruction should always be the goal. The topics don't change as fast as the Ss do. We need to be instructional NINJAs #cuechat
A1) Focusing on student centered instruction, relevant and timely data of both formative and summative nature are extremely important for setting learning targets and planning for overarching objectives. #cuechat
Absolutely agree...after reading your post I realized that I tend to focus on classroom data rather than high-stakes testing. Probably because it never meant much to me being at the END of the year. š #cuechat
The hard part is that I really respect most of those people. I just feel like they have been in the world of #schoolpolitics for so long they have forgotten that Ss change and we need to invest in changing with them. It is an evil trick of our educational system #cuechat
A2: Research based is another buzz word. You can find research on anything. I prefer action research done by me the teacher on the strengths of my in kids in developing strategies, not from an outsider. #cuechat
A2: As far as my training modules or lesson demos, I stick to district wide initiatives, many practices based on Hattie's work, structures and protocols that can be replicated, 4 C's, etc. #cuechat
A2: Visible Learning is the largest summary of educational research that has ever been conducted. There are some strategies that are more effective than others. #cuechat
A2: I'm just learning to evaluate the strategies I use in class against research data. Some strategies aren't as effective as I thought, according to studies. That forces me to look at other things I am doing in class that may in fact be causing the change. #cuechat
A1: jumping in late ... as an independent study virtual teacher I want as much data as I can collect as I donāt have Ss in front of me. Data informs instruction always. #CUEchat
Just got observed via collaboration with @AVID4College teacher. Great for district to see collaboration with #futurereadylibs teacher librarian #cuechat
A2:At end of the school yr after reviewing the data as a school and meeting by grade levels and lots of discussions -we came up with schoolwide agreements. Math - all gr levels will use RDE/RICE and for ELA - Language Function Walls will be implemented. #cuechat
I have been self-evaluating/reflecting on how I have incorporated district wide initiatives, like WICOR/AVID, cooperative learning structures, UDL. etc. #modelbestpractices
A2b: I take all research done by someone else, even Hattie, with a grain of salt. I glean what I can from their findings to enhance my own action research. #cuechat
A2: I really want to begin to use more exit tickets and classroom discussions of the lessons we do. I want the Ss to be a part of how they learn things. BUT I am still deprogramming the #workshit out of them. It is a journey and we just hit the trail. #cuechat
Q3: Hereās a crash course on effect size - anything over .40 is worth doing in class. Check out this chart of factors:https://t.co/KlblIqX7Vp Then add a labeled arrow, for one factor that you found interesting, to this Google Drawing:https://t.co/gOCTqD5WsY#cuechat
A2b: I believe in research, but it is too slow. I am using things that I see are being widely used by other Ts I trust and admire. This is my on the fly research. Does this count? #cuechat
A2. Data should drive instruction. Pre, during and post data tells me what to prepare for, how learning is going and what further steps are needed. Data is data. #cuechat
A2. We all know how data/research can be spun. Who funded the research should be looked at when presented by vendors. Maybe Iām a little jaded from dealing with vendors on a daily basis. #cuechat
Deprogramming #wrkshits love this! Kids are institutionalized by that method. I hear em complain about it, then you give them a chance to creatively think and they revert back because they say it's easier. #cuechat

One thing is for certain...there isn't any research that says frantic coverage of everything doubles the speed of student progress. More focus, less clutter.
#cuechat
A3. Hattie's research (2012) really changed the way I prepare my lessons. It shows me how to be efficient & effective. However, it does not include the rapid change of relevant technology. #cuechat

A1: Data is a crucial part of SPED life, my principal is very data oriented. Seeing the data visibly (data on each claim) has been helpful to see what standards we nailed home and what we can focus on more. I think it has opened up great conversations in our PLC. #cuechat
Honestly being back with kids I see just how conditioned kids are. I am working on clsmngment by engagement and not punative punishment, but kids if given the choice want to take the easy familiar path. I will keep giving them the option because it is the right thing. #cuechat

The number one effect size is Collective Teacher Efficacy-teachers are more effective when they combine their collective intelligence and ability. #cuechat

Me too! I found a great resource on a bellringer which really asks how the kids are doing, rate their day, asks if they ate lunch or breakfast etc but then has room for a warmup question. I think true reprogramming is including that self reflection/connection!

Elsbeth, I implemented a similar daily survey with my kiddos; created a Google Form to check in with social/emotional/breakfast/attitude for the day. It's been really eye opening! #cuechat
A2: I was never a traditional learner and hated school, I employ a lot of strategies that have worked for me through school and college. I really like to try things and see how the kids are, I ask how Iām doing through surveys and ask for feedback on strategies. #cuechat
Our time with students is limited and valuable. Every minute we spend with them should be spent using the practices that are most likely to be successful. We need to shift our perspective from looking at practices that work to looking at practices that work best. #cuechat

I think it counts if you see positive results. What I think research can do is accelerate the results. One way of teaching can get results that are good, but another can yield better and more equitable results. The research saves you having to reinvent that wheel. #cuechat

I totally agree with you! We need to focus on the students and be present to serve their needs and assist them in becoming the best possible students. #cuechat
When you dig into the book, Hattie will often explain things in more detail and shed light on why something scored low. Not always what is seems from the title. #cuechat
Microsoft Teams @MicrosoftTeamsand OneNote @OneNoteC ares such as powerful tools because they provide immediate feedback and collaboration. High on Hattie's Research. #cuechat
Itās been an adjustment leaving the classroom, but sharing an office with @An_Wr3n has allowed constant conversation and collaboration. It has grown my teaching capacity immensely. How can we build time for Ts to have more time together? #CUEchat
A4: I like that the research affirms much of what I have been advocating for (or against) having a positive impact. Thanks for the link for the free book...great addition. #cuechat
The deal with Visible Learning-it is a classic control vs. treatment study based on over 80,000 pieces of research data. The work really is not hattie's-he just did the meta-analysis. #cuechat
a3: My 1st year of teaching ages ago - I used ReciprocalTeaching with everything I could-it was the tool in my toolbox.Back then I was surviving year 1 T.Later discovered itās 0.74! That year my kids rocked the house -I remember having the principal ask- what did you do? #cuechat
A3) These have always bothered me. They are used as points against technology use. Yet, everyone here understands that it's the instruction that matters not the technology. All those practices at the top of the list are supported by tech, tech is not a practice. #cuechat
I really like Hatties work because it is not trying to support or disprove anything. It is just seeking to see the measurable effect of lots of things we do. This lends an aire of credibility to me. #cuechat
Q5: Data is powerful & can lead to EDU decision making. Did you know that visual data is more impactful than written & data presented in color is even more so?! Discuss ways/programs/apps that can help you tell your EDU story w/ rich, visual data. #cuechat
Totally see where you're coming from, Pam. He addresses a lot of that in his explanations in Visible Learning. It can't all be distilled down to the charts! #cuechat
A4: Yes , Iāve heard of Hattieās research and visible learning- I use it as a reference when working with Ts- I share with them the research and then have them decide if the strategies used are effective. #cuechat
A5: I am always down for a good infographic. A colleague just sent this TED talk to me yesterday. Over time, we have moved from oracy, literacy, numeracy, and now graphicacy. #CUEchathttps://t.co/L1dAISbfp2

A5 love @canva for infographics. Just made an @AdobeSpark about a week in library land. If observational data matters, we need to find a way to capture and share it. #cuechat

A5. Been a while since I played with it, but @piktochart has some cool #googlesheets integration. Keeps your data live as you change it. Plus infographics are a great medium of presenting data. #CUEchat
Well some parents do as well. I remember lots of parents asking me for more homework until I explained how hard their Ss worked for me during class and that they need to PLAY
A5: In my district we are using @PanoramaEd Social Emotional Learning based surveys. As I reflect they seem to be seeking to understand where kids are socially and emotionally. We often talk about how these are things help. I hope they give actionable results. #cuechat
A6: I am striving for pre and posts of each math standard this year. Kiddos correct, score and chart their own data. The impact has been immense! One kiddo ran all around the room sharing how much growth he made with each of his peers! #cuechat
I believe American students are the most tested on the planet, but they are under-assessed. Under the right conditions, pre-post assessment results can provide a wealth of information. More effective than high-stakes testing. #cuechat
A6: I don't think with was a strength for me. If I were still in the classroom, I would like be using some data points help kids see how they grow. Perhaps a way to gamify it. #cuechat
A6: My Ss are learning to own data. I give them prompt feedback on how to improve and opportunity to resubmit based on feedback. Sadly, most are not taking advantage because they're not used to this. #cuechat
A6: I have been using @jcorippo Fast and the Curious Protocol daily, and it is amazing that within a very short time Ss can own lots of different things through sets and reps, and we celebrate these every time we "play/learn" #cuechat
Homework can be used to continue discussions or deepen learning that Ss are on fire about, serve as reflection and growth opportunities. Like right now. I'm done with "work" but #cuechat is my homework.

We must start demonstrating to them at an earlier age. And reprogram their minds to want to know what a 2 vs a 3 is.. slowly but surely we can make this happen. #cuechat
A5) What I like about #Hattie is an emphasis on agency and helping students become aware of how certain behaviors help them learn. Assessment-capable learners is something to read up on! #cuechat
