Eric from Bozeman MT - checking in via TweetDeck ahead of time (thanks @PEbyMrE for sharing Q ahead of time)- we have our Holiday Program tonight - be on the lookout for a teacher dance later! A1) So far, my school year has been pretty awesome! Fist pump worthy! #ESPEchat#physed
A2) I try to set boundaries at school. I do try and leave by a specific time. Make sure to relax as needed. I have been known to take a de-stress day. #espechat
A2) For some self care: Physically: I try to escape and get a little workout in whenever I can. Mentally: Spend some down time with my family; just playing with my kids and relaxing. Emotionally: Have a quality visit with my wife. As Friends states, she's my lobster! #ESPEchat
Depended on what I needed it. Long weekends are nice but sometimes you realize that if you go to work the next day you might not be able to keep your composure. That's the time to take a day off. #espechat
A2) I try to take care of myself mentally by starting new projects that keep my year exciting and fresh. Emotionally by having PLN friends that help every time I ask. #ESPEChat
A2) Lots of different ways...Having a good support group at home, a sense of humor, realizing kids are just that...kids and my Twitter friends. #ESPEchat
A2 I always get 7-8 hours of sleep and find time to relax.
I listen to a fun podcast in my way to and from work.
One thing emotionally: I let a LOT of little things that used to drive me crazy go and now I don’t feel crazy anymore?? #espechat
A2 Definitely try to!!! Setting ⏰ for myself is super important to me as I’m constantly on the go, like most. Blocking out 1hr to myself everyday to exercise helps the mental & emotional state too (currently injured, so not doing this as much as which is messing w me) #ESPEchat
A3) A. I have felt burnt out. Bad. A few years back, I felt like I was stuck in the same thing every day. Groundhog Day style. Thought about getting out of teaching. It wasn't fun for me at that time. #ESPEchat
A2 Making sure I eat rather decently, hydrate, refuel with an electrolyte blend. Need to work on getting more sleep, definitely don’t average 7-8hrs, more like 6hrs #ESPEchat
A3) B. I took a step back from the extra things I was doing and focused on teaching and my family and myself. Simplified things and improved each of those things through effort, creativity, and seeking help. I asked for new ideas in teaching and was refreshed! #ESPEchat
I don’t leave my laptop or iPad. It has my email and I wouldn’t want someone to get into it. Maybe I could access a spare laptop and do the same thing. #ESPEChat
I have actually left the same exact lesson, because I timed everything in a PowerPoint to transition on its own. Sub told me it was amazing to have detailed plans that basically ran themselves. #ESPEchat
A2: physically- I need to work out at least 3-4 times a week. Mentally- I do things that make my heart sing and fill my bucket. Emotionally- remind myself to be brave and do things scared if I need to. Remind myself it’s ok try have a good cry to release stuff. #ESPEChat
A3a yes felt burn out last year at the holiday break and reflected on my program. I reflected and have changed my program a complete 180 degrees #espechat
I've been using a spare laptop to use with my pedometers. I do give access to the password for the subs. Not had an issue with the email. I tend to ask subs to come in for me so I trust them... #espechat
That is really cool! Wish I had an indoor space with projector to be able to do it efficiently. You might want to think about sharing a copy of one of those files, I know the #physed community would love to see it! #espechat
A3) I dont know that I’ve ever been burnt out from teaching, but definitely worn out from the grind some times. (10) 35 minute classes can wear you out some days. Been tweaking this year in order to be better planned for next year! #espechat
A4) Our school mental health team does a great job of outreach to teachers for Self-Care. In December, our principal started Self Care Bingo. Teachers check off Bingo sheet with what they did each week & if you get a Bingo, sheet goes into drawing for Coffee Gift Card. #ESPEchat
A3: I felt burnt out 2 yrs ago. Nursing/pumping, not good sleeping baby and toddler, not exercising, lacking purpose, lots of anxiety not eating well and lots of tired headaches. Life was hard and I was on survivor mode. #ESPEChat
#espechat A3) yes 🤦🏾♀️& I absolutely hate it. Looking for new ways to avoid that. Doing the same activities 5days a week with the same grade level tends to slow me down at times 😢
A3 b: I remind myself that I am better at taking care of others when I take care of myself. When I lose joy and gratitude that’s my cue to start reflecting and changing it up. I refer to my “why” about being brave so my kids can be brave. Reading Brené Brown. #ESPEChat
A3) I have not experienced burnout...yet. Hoping to avoid it by just being aware how real it is. I know some Ts who have experienced it and some quit teaching because of it. #espechat
It’s something I consistently think about. Students are thankful for providing them a way to be active, but what am I doing. Complaining about getting up at 5:00 to do it is not a very good excuse #espechat
A3 and it does seem like my burnout lasts very briefly. I’ll have a bad day (Monday’s!!!) and really wonder why I’m doing this lol. But just one class or another day can totally change things. #espechat
A5) It is SUPER important to recharge and reset. We stress it to our students and need to listen to ourselves. To recharge/reset, I play with my kids, go on dates with my wife, and/or get some exercise. Again, simple, but effective. #ESPEchat
A4) Wanted to have a more serious conversation with my principal today during a post-observation meeting about issues and situations but I chickened out. #espechat
A3b Something that’s worked well for me is reflection and checking in with myself. Staying organized and batching your time appropriately so that you’re not spending hours on a task or project #ESPEchat
A3: I felt burnt out from doing all the work when there was 2 of us and letting him ride my coat tail. I spent too much energy mad at him after many interventions. I actually had to leave that school or I may have been divorced. I was so unhappy every night i came home #espechat
Nate, just remember that one day this week can save you 3-4 days later. I find that when I push through it can lead to getting me sick. That makes it worst for everyone. A well timed day off can save many days later. #espechat
A2: something I'm still working on. I find myself waking up during the night thinking about lessons. I try to go on runs and blast music to help sleep better. #espechat#balance
With the holiday season approaching, take some time to take care of yourself by joining #ESPEChat this Tuesday @ PM EST. We will be talking about Teacher Self-Care and how best to avoid burn out. Come on out for the last chat before the holidays! #pepd#physed
A4 I haven’t addressed it but I’ve seen a colleague go through the process as they are retiring at the end of this year. I’ve seen the good and the ugly and can only hope that I put self-care at the forefront so that I can continue to help ss chase their 🔴 #ESPEchat
A3) Yes I do get burned out, so I try to change little things here and there but still meet same GLO's. Also, allowing Ss to lead warmup to give me a break and learn something new from them! #espechat
Q5) Resting is to make sure I get sleep. I've taken naps when I've gotten home that have gotten me through weeks! To reset, I try to get away from the city and take a walk. I've been known to come home and grab the kids to go to a park to get some movement in too! #espechat
I find that I try a lesson first with other classes before I do it with Monday kids. Makes it easier to come back to the teaching week and it’s running smooth enough that I think Monday can handle it #espechat
A5) I’ve just turned it all off before and just relaxed or put tech away where it cant be with me. Not checking e-mail or twitter for even a weekend has been amazing sometimes. Recently got rid of Facebook in order to eliminate unnecessary distractions from family time. #espechat
A5) Fortunately, as teachers we get many days away from the building, which helps refresh us. Problem is too often we are planning when we are away :/ BUT, that's why you follow people like @foes4sports, so she can provide you amazing ideas 👍 Work smarter, not harder! #espechat
A5) So important to have likes/hobbies outside of teaching. All other professions have lives too...why not teachers? Always found it funny that parents/students were surprised to see me outside of school. Fishing is my battery recharger. But I won’t leak any spots... #espechat
#espechat a5 It is very important to recharge and reset! Some of the things I do to recharge is go on twitter to get some inspiration and ideas. I also like to reset by reflecting on my practice as a teacher and what I could do to improve.
A5 It’s essential because if your cup isn’t full it’s impossible to fill the cups of others. My biggest recharge 🔋 of all is summer time when I get to travel and go to workshops such as @EPEWCP! Exercise is the biggest stress relief I can do on a day to day basis #ESPEchat
A4) Yes, and other teachers have similar issues. Just venting can help, and understanding you're not alone. We actually have a happy hour committee to schedule events and provide random treats to improve morale 👍#espechat
A5 Stoking the fire by having conversations with online #PLN, #calicrew and #ESPEchat is huge. Taking weekend adventures whether that’s hiking, going to a race, spending time with family or friends, watching a good ole movie! #ESPEchat
Completely agree @SHAPE_America Nashville was amazing in terms of quality. Was starting to hit a rough patch heading to @OAHPERD and met @ElleShumney and started helping her, and being able to chat all things PE with @BigTennPhysEd was a tremendous boost! #espechat
