The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Tues. reply: #BFC530 Creating the culture allows metacognitive reflectivity on the culture. If assessment includes formative assessment then interventions in the developmental stage can improve outcomes. #FRN365
#bfc530 For early career educators advice: develop short and long term PD plan, begin to gather a PLN, look for appropriate mentors who are open to helping you on your journey.
Advice to student teacher: it is all about relationships. After that, own it. Be your best self and remember to be kind to yourself. Despite all the paperwork, it is the best way of life. #bfc530
Be patient with yourself and your students, serve from the heart, model what you preach, allow students opportunities to lead the learning...then watch and listen to learning unfold before you! #bfc530
That every day will bring both challenge and opportunity, be present in each moment so as to not miss them when they present themselves ❤️ and listen more than you speak 😊 #bfc530
Dear Student Teacher, You may have had excellent college education courses, but what you learn there will be trivial compared to what you will learn from actual teaching in front of real students #bfc530
Shamelessly sharing... my second book just became available for pre-order yesterday (just the eBook for now, paperback in August) Message me if you're interested in reading early and reviewing. #bfc530
The Cross Country eBook is now available for pre-order. The paperback will be available for purchase on August 15... which just happens to be the 49th anniversary of Woodstock. https://t.co/HYhLf0ZJxf#YAlit#preorder#Kindle

Find, join, build your teachertribe! It is so important to surround yourself with people who will inspire, encourage, motivate & challenge you to become the best educator you can be! #BFC530. I wrote a blog about it recently- let me know what you think.

Everyday is a new day, build relationships with your classes- this will go much further than any management plan ever could, reflect and admit your mistakes- then make changes and move on, and lastly short & sweet when replying to parent emails :) #bfc530
#bfc530 I would tell young #teachers to stay away from negative people. Do not let anyone take away your enjoyment of working with #students every day.
Get to know your students. It will make it much easier to figure out how how get and hold their interest, how to motivate them, how to connect with them, how to make them feel welcome in your classroom. #bfc530
Don’t talk too much....instead, have the students do stuff. Also, sometimes learning is loud. Both pieces of sound advice given to me at different points in my career. #bfc530
Isnt that part of the reason we all meet up here? I never stop learning and improving. eduTwitter is a part of that. I think teaching would become boring for us if we didnt look for ways to improve #bfc530
Remember...
You are leading students, not their boss
You have the most serious job, so don't take yourself too seriously
You are not just the teacher, but also a student
Students, just like adults will not learn without relationships

Work hard, love your Ss like they were your own, forgive, surround yourself w/people who empower you, keep learning ...& most importantly, be grateful for this opportunity #bfc530

I would tell them that teaching is about building relationships with students and staff to help people find what they are passionate about so they can take action. This means meeting people where they are and knowing that the smallest changes can be the biggest wins. #bfc530
So true! And a wonderful thing about teaching is that you get to keep learning for the rest of your life. You'll never actually get there, so enjoy the process. #bfc530

Class trip to the Cape May Zoo tomorrow! Outdoor Field Day on Friday, then 3 half days. Today is our last "Whatcha Reading Wednesday", and then I hope most of my books come back with covers on them. Ahhh, the end of the school year... Priceless. #bfc530

I'd also add: lead with the belief that your students CAN. High expectations for ALL Ss is one of the most important platforms a teacher can have. #bfc530
Yes, so much great advice, and all of it is important. I wish someone had told me this when I started. The advice they gave me was "keep them quiet and cover the textbook." My first year was deadly. #bfc530
Me too. When I do walkthroughs I love that sound of enthusiasm and engagement. Although, the quiet hum of Ss reading independently is a good sound too! #bfc530
I think of amazing Ts who left the profession after a yr due to a particularly rough class or uncollegial staff & I want to beg them to stay as the scope of a career goes thru many highs & lows. We can make it what we want it to be, but I didn't know that as a new T. #bfc530
I actually quit. Took a year off, discovered In the MIddle by @NancieAtwell and decided to go back armed with new teaching ideas. If I hadn't found that book, I'd never have gone back! So grateful. #bfc530

It reminds me of parenting...so much advice out there about what is "right" or how it should look or sound. There are myriad ways to teach well, & hopefully the idea of what learning looks, sounds, and feels like is expanding. #bfc530
No way. That is amazing. You must have known in your heart that what you were experiencing was not the way for you, but also not the ONLY way out there. The power of books, but also your determination! Love it. #bfc530

And what a joy for Ss to have so many unique experiences. Great Ts come in all different packages in terms of behavior management, style, and pedagogy, but the core sameness is that they're in it for the kids. Ss can spot a phony a mile away, so they know authenticity. #bfc530
In grades 5 - 7 I was in an innovative "open area classroom" with 60 Ss - we were put in charge of our learning & had so much freedom of choice. Those are the only yrs in school that I remember actually learning. I wanted to reproduce that feeling for my Ss #bfc530

Wow. What an experience, and think how that shaped you and your approach to teaching. I always ask Ts when was a time in their life that they learned the most, and often when they share it was NOT in a school setting. We need to create more of what you describe IN school. #bfc530
There is at least 1 whole chapter in my book about this, because it’s so big and so important. 1. Collect good people B. Be a person 1st, $ be curious, humble, reflective, caring, and teachable. #bfc530
1. Those who are doing the talking are doing the learning. 2. Limit your lectures to 7 minutes or less. 3. Not all advice is good advice. 4. Read Mathematical Mindsets 5. Create a Twitter PLN. #bfc530
Good morning everyone! One week to moving up day! Where it is sad to come to an end with my ss, I love the feeling of pride emanating from our 8th graders on that day and the stars in the eyes of the little ones who look up to them. #bfc530
Folks voted for weekly through July & August. Now we just need enough questions in the bank to last us daily through June and weekly through summer. Maybe back to daily for the last week of August? #bfc530

Also not too sure why an old question popped up for everyone this morning 🤔 #bfc530
The new one was scheduled for 5:29am but seems like folks never saw it.

Intentionally select instructional approaches & strats that will best respond to your learners’ needs. To do this, know your learners, in multiple ways & on an ongoing basis. This also requires knowing the WHY the pedagogy behind the strategies #bfc530
Not only is setting/having low expectations for our learners unfair, it is sometimes a subtle form of discrimination. Years ago I made a major shift in the expectations I set for our learning when I realized that bias & assumptions had informed my lesson planning. #bfc530

The old question had more responses today than the first time around (lol). Maybe some old reflective topics should be part of the summer que. #bfc530@wheeler_laura

Set the expectations high and give the students tools that they specifically need to meet the high expectations. We are not identical cookies, so we do not all require identical tools. #bfc530
