The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
Hi #educoach! I'm at the pool watching swim practice after being home for a snow day. My #eduwin was organizing a conference for elementary teachers in my district Friday.
👋🏼Excited & sad that we are concluding our #EduCoach winter book on #TheCoachingHabit 📘It's been quite a learning experience. Love the questions, resources, & videos @boxofcrayons has shared with us. Grateful to be learning from and alongside our #PLN
Hi, #educoach! Lauren, K-5 Instructional Coach, Indiana. My #eduwin was reflecting and collaborating with colleagues during two lab site experiences yesterday.

A1: I feel like this is the time of year when stresses start to surface, so I find myself asking what's on your mind frequently, followed by the AWE question. Supports others in being heard and being able to navigate through challenges together. #educoach
A1 I have used the questions a few times with virtual coaching clients. We've also debriefed the use and where their thinking went because of them. The coaches and I were amazed at the depth of reflection created by the questions. #educoach A WIN!
Q2 Asking the Learning Question -- “What was most useful for you?” can reinforce learning and development. Why would this question be valuable in the coaching process? #educoach
We had Monday off due to ice. More on the way tomorrow. I'm so tired of this winter. Spring can't come soon enough! #educoach - But the sun was out & and it is staying light longer! A good sign!
A2: It's easy to think we know what is most important when coaching, but asking teachers what is most useful lets us know if they got the same important idea we did or something else. It's formative assessment for us and ownership for them. #educoach
A2: Feedback. When we think about the importance of self-monitoring ourselves as learners, this question can inform and guide our next steps as well as spur meaningful self-reflection. #educoach
#EduCoach A1: I have worked on the sacred pause, genuinely listening, & on "Acknowledge the answers you get" before moving on to other questions. This has truly made the conversation about the needs, thoughts, & answers of the Ts I serve & their truths not mine. #TheCoachingHabit
A2: Asking the learning question provides an opportunity for them to make the learning or info THEIRS. Their reflection makes the learning "stick". #educoach
A3: It spurs them reflect to name the good or find a strength/celebration within the experience. That strength can then lead to further action and next steps. #educoach
#EduCoach A2: Going to definitely use "What was most useful for you?" in my #InstructionalCoaching conversations & even at for PDs I facilitate. Definitely a #Superfood like Kale🥗
🥒Affirms that it was useful
🥒Allows for reflection
🥒Provides feedback
🥒For You personalizes it
I like your point about finding the positive. It’s often so easy to latch onto what doesn’t or won’t work that to force an eye toward the positive can be powerful. #educoach
#EduCoach A3: It encourages & builds the habit of always having a reflective mindset. When given the space to reflect on one's learning that is when learning takes hold.
"We do not learn from experience... we learn from reflecting on experience."
-John Dewey
A4: It provides feedback on what resonated or transferred from the coaching experience which can then inform our practices with future colleagues to best support and meet individual needs. #educoach
#EduCoach Definitely! I can also see this question "What was most useful for you?" being used by Ss as part of their reflection whether it's via an Exit Ticket, Journal Writing, etc.
It helps them see that you are there for them. It’s not about you and your needs; it’s about their needs. Asking the what was useful for them shows that you recognize their importance in the process. #educoach
A5: It shows vulnerability. It shows we are open to feedback and ongoing growth as learners. When we are vulnerable, we add an element of authenticity to our coaching work, and as a result, add value to those we support. #educoach
#EduCoach A3: This question keeps the learning & reflection going as it can also be posed at the beginning of a subsequent conversation.
"What's essential is to interrupt the process of forgetting."
Q6 I loved digging deeper into this book and the opportunity to discuss with all of you. I had the book on my Kindle for a long time, but never got around to reading it. Wish I would have read it sooner! #educoach
A6: I enjoyed the conversation surrounding the questions within The Coaching Habit. We were able to take a deeper dive into what these questions truly mean for us as educators, yet also apply them to any situation within our life. True transfer and application! #educoach
#EduCoach A5: Wow can't think of two more powerful questions to serve as our Coaching Bookends than👇🏼Gets to what is foremost on the mind of the Ts & ends with a reflective ? that informs our future as Thought Partners.
📜What is on your mind?
📜What was most useful to you?
#EduCoach 💭A6: What was most useful about our winter book study on #TheCoachingHabit is my new North Star to serve Ts with "...a little less advice, a little more curiosity."
#EduCoach I also loved the fact that each chapter was short, intriguing, research informed, and accompanied with great and funny videos. Excellent selection and pacing for a book study!
A7: Navigating to get to "What's the real challenge for you?" is powerful and leads to meaningful, deep work at the true heart of what's needed. This one resonates toward impactful coaching experiences. #educoach
#EduCoach A7: I found value in all the questions and most importantly that they were all indeed just that--questions that can guide the work we do as we champion a #CoachApproach
"We live in the world our questions create."
-David Cooperrider
I’m sad I only caught 2 of this series’ chats b/c I’m sure I’d have gotten so much from the convo. Just looking over the questions, the one that stands out to me is “What do you want?” If a T cannot articulate the desired outcome, then there will always be a struggle. #educoach
A8: Some of these questions might come off too curt in email. But asking what the real challenge is might get to the heart of an issue faster. #educoach
A8: These questions can be used to support our why. If we can't align back to our why, we have no vision or purpose. Thus, no reason to unleash the email beast. #educoach
Tonight's forecast has high confidence for at least some snow accumulation in most places in the Willamette Valley. Only place with lower confidence is near Eugene, but even there snow is looking more and more likely.
A9: Continue to utilize "what was most useful for you" to elicit feedback from colleagues to support my growth as an educator as well as support them in lifting the level of collective teacher efficacy. #educoach
A9 I will definitely use these questions. We are sharing with local coaches in March & I'm sharing in a conference session next week! Spreading #TheCoachingHabit love! #educoach
