The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
I'm Kathy co-moderator of tonight's #educoach. I'm joined by @lsmith0917. My success is actually coming up on Friday. Presenting about coaching at a PBIS conference!
Hi there! Robyn from TX. Success this week...seeing how some Ts are implementing and embracing practices I thought they were resistant to trying. #educoach
My name is Brandi and I am a Career Tech Educator from Alabama. Spring has definitely sprung so success stories are a little hard to recall for me at the moment but one is definitely joining tonight’s chat for my first #educoach chat. #UMEdTech
Hi #educoach! Lauren, K-5 Instructional Coach, Indiana. Excited to join @kathyperret for tonight's chat. My #eduwin is seeing my colleagues lift each other up during a busy time of year and taking on new challenges to continue to grow as educators!
Brianne from Houston! Success this week... worked with a teacher after school who is always making adjustments to her instruction to do what’s best for kids! #educoach
A1: 1)always remember everyone we work with is a person first...with lives outside of school. 2)you do NOT have to know everything...in fact, sometimes you’re willingness to learn can be your best coaching asset.#educoach
A1: Organization is key! Don’t be afraid to ask for help or take up the opportunity or resources if it’s offered. Keep an open mind, positive attitude and remember to flexible when needed. #UMEdTech#educoach
Laura from CT jumping in! K-2 mah Coach. Success this week is seeing Ts trying out small group instruction in math and being excited about it! #educoach
A1: this is my first year, but I’ve learned that it’s best to align your coaching with their goals rather than your own and the only way to help them grow is to establish a positive trusting working relationship #educoach
Lauren, Instructional Coach from Long Beach, CA. My success this week has been investing in my career at @jimknight99 Coaching Institute in Huntington Beach 🏝 😎 #educoach
A1) Not seeing the direct impact you have on student learning will be a difficult transition. Believe in the work you are doing with teachers. #educoach
A1 Think about how you "sell" coaching. How is your message reaching all types of teacher learners. And remember - your job is not to have everyone teach like you. Take risks. Coach outside your content area. And always come to the #educoach chat. :)
Keeping focus on student learning and data engages the teacher in a different way. It's no longer about their teaching, it's about the student learning! #educoach
A2: For myself, I love OneNote to keep my thoughts organized. I use my phone to film teacher’s lessons and put them together with other pictures and captions using an app called Video Shop. I also like Adobe Spark for videos and graphics. #educoach
A1: for virtual coaching I love using TorshTalent @TORSHCO ...no equipment needed. Otherwise, I’m a Google docs freak...love to share and collaborate on common tools. #educoach
A1) Prioritize the highest leverage tasks! @ToddWhitaker posted this the other day "It is essential that principals and coaches are both in classrooms on a regular basis. It is difficult to improve anyone’s performance from the office. #educoach
A3: Utilize Google Calendar and keep a hard copy calendar as well. Utilize flagging colors for emails to prioritize importance, months, days of the week, etc. #UMEdTech#educoach
A3: I still need a planner for scheduling. I create a school year planner around a theme each year... I have it spiral bound and share with my teachers at the start of the year. #educoach
A3: make coaching plans. Especially if you are at multiple campuses. It helps keep me on track with how to focus my coaching according to what each campus/district is trying to do. #educoach
A3) Blocking off time for things you want to make sure you spend your time on! Want to be in classrooms? Block that time off ahead of time each week. Now, I need to go take my own advice! #educoach
A3: I schedule everything through Google Calendar. Being able to synchronize to multiple devices and notifications help me when I’m on the go all day and need to check my schedule. #educoach
A3: It’s all about prioritizing. Making the most of your very limited time and ensuring that your schedule reflects the ultimate goal of student success. Which class periods do I have to see a particular teacher or team, and when can I squeeze in my other duties? #educoach
A1) As a first year coach, I have learned a lot on the job! To best support teachers, you must have a trusting relationship with teachers. Be intentional in building these relationships, and recognize that this will be an ongoing process! #educoach
Welcome! Thanks for joining tonight. I enjoy color coding too! I code within my Google calendar too, so I’m able to track my time allocations. #educoach
A3) I use a color-coded calendar, both electronic and print. It is important to prioritize your time to get the highest leverage out of your efforts...and when someone figures out how to do that please let me know! :) #educoach
A4) Be someone worth trusting. Mean the things you say and do the things you say you'll do. Find opportunities to connect with people on a personal level. You are most likely the person they will be most vulnerable with! #educoach
A4: I started the year with lots of positive feedback, to build trust and credibility. Then I asked lots of questions about their goals currently and the coming years in their career. Now I can tailor my feedback and coaching to where they are and where they hope to go! #educoach
A4: To build strong relationships with teachers get to know them professionally and personally. Create a quick “about me” survey they can fill out at the beginning of the year to share their birthday, favorite food, holiday, color, vacation spot, etc. #UMEdTech#educoach
A4: be consistent and honest. They may not always like what you say, but they can trust it. Some of my strongest relationships were with Ts that were initially skeptical. #educoach
A4: It’s about being a collaborative partner in learning. Be human; show vulnerability. Make mistakes, take risks, celebrate success...but do it...together. :) #educoach
A5 My best tip on Principal/Coach agreements is make sure you form them. Meet regularly. This has some good ideas to start the convo. https://t.co/LsGkATmdQO#educoach
A4) "Effective instructional coahces see teachers as professionals, which means they see teachers as the ultimate decision makers about what and how they learn." @jimknight99#educoach
A5: I make sure to send summaries of my visits to principals bc I don’t always get to see them when I’m on campus. I want them to know what resources I’ve given Ts or what we’ve done. This helps keep us on the same page. #educoach
A5: my worst coaching failure had to do with a principal offering to communicate something to a team of teachers for me while I was working at another school. The lesson? The messenger matters. #educoach
A5: Get to know the principals like you do the teachers. Find out how each on organizes their school and do your best to accommodate their wants/needs when possible. #UMEdTech#educoach
A6-Carve out a regular time to meet to discuss building goals, coaching progress and other needed areas. Make sure to be aware of each other’s roles! Principals need to make sure they are the coach’s cheerleader to let staff know Coaching is a building focus. #educoach
A4) Be personable and take the time to get to know your teachers. This has to be intentional - you can't find the time, you have to make the time. #educoach
A4: I think the best way is to partner with them on a none coaching activity first. I think this helps them see me as an colleague and introduces them to my curiosity about all things education #educoach
A5 Get to know the principal's vision and priorities for the school, and get to know them personally as much as possible. Just like the teachers! #educoach
A4) "Effective instructional coaches see teachers as professionals, which means they see teachers as the ultimate decision makers about what and how they learn." @jimknight99#educoach
A5: we regularly revisit roles now. What do I do? How do they grease the wheels glfor teachers to improve access without pushing coaching on anyone against their will. Communication is all first hand (now!). No cutting corners on that ... #educoach
A6 Jump in and try coaching cycles. The more you wait, the harder it gets. Find a willing teacher to practice with. Let the know you are a learner and taking a risk. #educoach
A5 It also doesn't hurt to have a coach of your own to work through coaching cycles and reflect on your progress. I believe coaches deserve a coach as well to get to their personal best! I love helping coaches SHINE https://t.co/rxOgqhdmIQ#educoach
A5. I am lucky that my current admin was a coach. She gets it...she knows the boundaries and we just talk coaching. In the past I have just asked principal is there is an area they want me to focus on and tell them I would do that. Then made my role clear.#educoach
I did that this year and it made a huge difference! Also when you map out your year you can consider which times of year are better for cycles and which are not. #educoach
A7 - Exercise and finding balance! I just started using https://t.co/iiXjbVBfEE for my exercise. At home workouts - totally free. And I work hard to unplug over the weekend! #educoach
A6: This is my first year implementing cycles ... I agree you just need to jump in. I keep looking at my well worn Impact Cycle book by @jimknight99#educoach
A7: Take care of your self - eat well, rest well, dive into personal development (if you're looking for something I recommend anything from @BreneBrown ), and LAUGH #educoach
A7: Find your support system through coworkers or others in the role in a different system. Discuss what’s working and what’s not. Stay as positive as you can. “Unplug” when not at work and set aside time in your day for “you” time. #UMEdTech#educoach
A6) Balance is important...make sure to take time from your day to breathe and decompress, and make sure that you take time for yourself! Protect your time at home...doesn't have to be all work all the time! #educoach
A7) Give yourself some grace. It isn't all important and it doesn't all have to be done. Identify the events at work that energize you and find ways to create more of those opportunities for yourself. #educoach
A7: This is more how I try to help them with stress. I bring them chocolate, I share calmness my playlists and on the day of our coaching sessions I offer to help them with any task so they can focus on our conversation during that time #educoach
A6) I am so excited to engage in coaching cycles...@jimknight99 's The Impact Cycle has been a great resource! My coaching PLC is engaged in an inquiry project around this work! #educoach
Signing off for tonight. This was a great first experience! I'd love to create more connections with other coaches! Will be back next week :) #educoach
Working with deep thinkers gives me a place to grow every single day. So appreciative of the learning opportunities I have with my PLC members. #educoach
A6) I am so excited to engage in coaching cycles...@jimknight99 's The Impact Cycle has been a great resource! My coaching PLC is engaged in an inquiry project around this work! #educoach
A9 I actually get some of my best coaching advice from various Self-Help books. I love to analyze their coaching techniques. Love @JenSincero You are a Badass https://t.co/OBrRcrBLkt#educoach
