This chat is for coaches of all levels interested in professional learning and networking and sponsored by @SidelinePower the host of the first #PoweredUp Clinic! #TXHSFBCHAT
Tonight's topic is Job Hunting: Tips and Advice. You can never get enough help from your peers when you're looking for a job, so I hope this benefits all coaches! #TXHSFBCHAT
@kdawgswift AD/HFC Gold Beach Panthers, Gold Beach, Oregon #ruralhsfootball Keeper of the Football Tool Chest on Google Drive #TXHSFBCHAT Avid Outdoors man, lover of God's artistry.
For #TXHSFBCHAT we use a Q1, A1 format. If this is your first time here, welcome! If you've been since 2015, welcome! I couldn't do this without all of the coaches responding each week!
A1: I feel like the follow up to the resume submission helps spark more interest than the resume itself. When I looked for my first job, I hand delivered as many as possible to introduce myself #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: I gave my resume years ago to @CoachFore , I thought it was good. He told me it was boring as all heck LOL! Added Color Mascots & considerably more in terms of accomplishments at each stop. Example building a weight room from scratch & raised the funds to do it #TXHSFBCHAT

Heard great things about @CoachFore in that area. I did not exactly plan to be looking right now and I know the resume could be better looking. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: my certification is at the top, in “work experience” I will highlight pertinent info pertaining to the job (for example, highlight track coaching highlights for head track job, defensive assignments/highlights for DC job, etc) #TXHSFBCHAT
A1 guess that havig good references would help..they might knowsomeone you know. I have always just called a coach I wanted to work for and justtold him about myself
A1: I’ve always included a cover letter that sums everything up in a few short paragraphs. I don’t know if it works, but I’ve been offered every job I have interviewed for. That being said, I’m sure the streak will end now, whenever that will be. #txhsfbchat
A2 I always found out everything I possibly could about a job. Find their hudl and watch highlights. Looks at the last several years of results. Find their all district team and see what’s coming back. Be aware as an outsider could be about a place #TXHSFBCHAT
A2)I think you need more documents and plans for the program overview when applying and interviewing for a HC job. I think the asst job you can have some scheme but not much else. #txhsfbchat
A2: I research as much as possible about the program. I will look up every sport and study up on them, I’ll call coaches I know who have coaches against them, or have worked there before. Pays off in the interview when you know details (including kids’ names) #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: For an assistant, I think some reflection on yourself for some standard questions about strengths and weaknesses. It's also good to brush up on position knowledge and how you work with kids #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 I created a philosophy of the program document and have been revising it. Will Tailor it to the school with their Helmet or logo on the cover page. I try to have one for each member of the committee #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) References are Huge! I also think if they have you under their radar that shows they have been watching you for a while and the interest is already there then.
#txhsfbchat
A2: I’ve never interviewed or a head job, yet. But for assistant jobs, make sure you know as much about the hc as possible. Try to know about the culture of the community and most important, stay true to yourself. I’d probably take the same approach for a hc gig too. #txhsfbchat
A2: I think for HFC position or assistant position you try to find out if it is truly open or are they just doing what they have to legally before they hire the guy they already have. Also do your diligence in finding out as much as you can about community & program #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Success: What your school and position group accomplished. Being part of a successful program is more important. If you were not a school with a winning record, it is easy for people to gloss over you and difficult to convey the great job you did. #txhsfbchat
A2: I have no clue about prepping for HC jobs. I've heard many prepare packets and presentations. I think its important to present an organized plan backed by a philosophy that you believe in #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: for assistant have a great manual that is YOUR work. Be able to speak to it in everything that you do. Make sure it is authentic. As a HC have a year round plan for development on and off the field. #TXHSFBCHAT
True story LOL 21 years ago Gold Beach called Ernie Zampese in Dallas @dallascowboys to ask about me and see if he really knew me! #TXHSFBCHAT I coached his youngest at @SMCHS_Football years before the O'Leary Scandal
In reply to
@Coach_Stone_MT, @coachfisher_rp, @dallascowboys, @SMCHS_Football
If you have the film on a platform like Hudl then you could craft a presentation to demonstrate your work. That could really help in an assistant role especially if you have practice and game film. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3 I have a close group of friends that work in all levels of football in Texas I talk with regularly about jobs I may or may not be interested in. There’s not many peoples opinion I trust outside of them #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: for assistant have a great manual that is YOUR work. Be able to speak to it in everything that you do. Make sure it is authentic. As a HC have a year round plan for development on and off the field. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Anyone that can help give you solid advice or is a solid reference. I have 6 coaches that I have worked with/for that I value their insight and experience knowledge more than anything. I always reach out to those guys. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: A few as possible with the best reputations and are well connected! A little discretion is best rather then broad and load announcements #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: depends on how many I know that have coached at (or against) the program I’m interested in. I’m looking to hear as much as possible, positive and negative. #TXHSFBCHAT
I reach out to people within my circle to bounce ideas off of them. Often times, these are family members or one or two close friends/coaches. I want to know it's people who I can trust.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A3 I let my HC know if I am planning to apply elsewhere. I seek the council of people I respect, my last 2 HC’s, our DC, and our Boy’s Varsity BB coach(who is a former student, also a teacher with me in our middle school and I have been his JV coach) #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: I prep for an Assistant position by having my list of skills and drills and how I will teach them. A drill video is nice. Do your HW - know the scheme they run & ask good Q's to show that you know a little bit & that you are willing to learn more. #txhsfbchat
A2 be flexible as an assistant. Last time I left my school for another program, I was going to be an assistant OL/DL coach. By August I was WR/DB and Co-STC #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: I think it's really just about trying to improve each day and learn something new from the people around you. Twitter has been amazing in terms of learning from great coaches of all levels.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A1: My desire to connect with kids, to teach life lessons through athletics, and to impart selflessness as a movement throughout the community. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) As a HFC prepping is a lot easier when you can bring in your entire staff and have a business plan to turn the program around with the student-athlete and turning the culture around and making sure the administration is on board 100% #txhsfbchat
A4: LOL polish my off field skills - fishing for Salmon & Steelhead & keeping the Mrs. @JKatGB63 happy! At 60 this might be it as a HFC, although in my sunset years being a assistant at small college or HS sounds heavenly! #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: It’s imperatives I research everything you possibly can about the prospective school. Head to the interview with more than enough information and reasons you want to join their program as an Asst or HC. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: In Texas it helps to have useful teaching certificates: core subjects and composites...I think it's important to show loyalty and commitment as part of your personal presentation. Take on responsibilities and perform them to your best ability #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: I do not believe there is a number. I think it’s important to get in touch as many contacts and angles as possible. Never too many people to contact. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4) Its about the fit, so I keep working on being as good and prepared of a coach as I can. Patience, not willing to take a HC job to have a HC job. #txhsfbchat
A4 Make sure you do everything you can to do the very best right where you are. Don't coach for the next job, coach for your current job. Give the kids you have everything you've got everyday. At the same time make sure you are working on a personal growth goal #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: I am just trying to be the best I can be for the Steele Knights first and foremost. I also want to be sure I position myself to meet influential people that will think of me when the mention of a job comes into play. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4 I know I am weak on the budgeting and business side of the HC role. The HC handled it all but I never pushed for more responsibilities there either. #TXHSFBCHAT
The other deal is get involved in your association. The best way to network is to spend time attending @THSCAcoaches events. Go to your regional meeting. Go to coaching school. Reach out to your regional directors and stay informed. #txhsfbchat
I think having HC experience with Track and helping build a wrestling program. And handling a co-op between rivals, in both sports, having half the team at another school and school district. #unique#txhsfbchat
@coachvint@coach_harvey18 are correct. Working as hard and well as you can where you are is number 1 but keep the resume updated. You never know when opportunity or necessity will strike #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: #txhsfbchat and twitter! We live in the greatest time ever to be a football coach and to be able to improve your knowledge, abilities, and skills, and to make new contacts. There are so many resources out there now. To be a better coach, work college camps and learn technique
A4: Always bugging @coachgeathers, @RmaCoachP, & @Matttur about the Xs & Os, while working on being comfortable and confident with my own voice & opinions. Working at Riverside Military made that part of the job easy, especially when you enjoy everyone you work with. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: My advice goes to the guys looking to get into Texas. Join @THSCAcoaches and make sure you know the steps to getting a Texas certificate. Find your starting point, whether its as an assistant or whatever town, find it and rock it #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: If you are truly prepared and ready with the knowledge, skills and network, be patient!!!!! God has a plan for you and it will happen when it is suppose to happen and it's the right fit! Not getting a job does not mean your not a highly qualified Coach you are! #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Be where your feet are! At the same time, market yourself, go after your dreams (if that’s the case), and stay moving. Don’t be stagnant. #TXHSFBCHAT
Had a goal to be an HC when I turned 40. I am eight weeks from 41, it was an arbitrary deadline. Still a little disappointed it hasn't happened but not discouraged. #txhsfbchat
