Hello, friends! Brooke Lovely, currently kindergarten— but soon to be 2nd grade at @WilsonElem! My students are still trying to wrap their heads around how I’m skipping 1st. #octmchat
A1 I have a set of maps in my classroom that are South up and Pacific centered. It gets the students thinkng about different ways to see the world. #octmchat
A1: Drawing pictures - I love the research from @joboaler and others about the importance of visualization. Connecting visuals with equations - building a "movie" in their mind as they solve problems. #octmchat
A1 1: math is all around you! Starting the year with that idea and asking Ss to “find the math” in life! And then share what you see! 2:rich tasks and sharing diff ways of solving #OCTMchat
A1 We make math out of what we have. We count everything around us. We make math out of “When’s recess?” We measure and compare everything, just because we are curious! #octmchat
Where do you find the math in your life? In brainstorming ideas for summer, a couple of teachers mentioned having kids search for different numbers within license plates. Prime numbers, odd numbers, multiples of 7, etc. Fun way to pass a road trip! #octmchat

A1: we also use a lot of arts integration in our school. I have loved watching students represent math artistically and analyze art mathematically. #octmchat
A2: lots of fluency games using a deck of cards or dice. I heard of one teacher who sends home a deck and a pair of dice with each student, along with instructions for various games #octmchat
A2 One game I’m loving on is dominos, but accruing points based on how many pips are on the domino you played. Sometimes we decide on a certain number of rounds, sometimes we play til the end. #octmchat
A2- I always gave my Ss a deck of cards with a couple directions to fun math games as their end of year gift, Such as the game pyramid! I love Close to 100 by @mburnsmath too #octmchat
A2: Salute is a classic! Can play to find the sum, difference or product. I've never played with finding the quotient - but it might be interesting to try! https://t.co/qpp52dlIwr#octmchat
#OCTMchat exactly! Let’s start with the games in he classroom and have them teach their families at home. Providing families with resources is a great start or simply teaching them how to do quick number talks.
A2 Cards, Yahtzee, depending on age of kid - Trouble, Connect Four, Hi Ho Cherry Oh, anything where they need to count. I'm also a huge supporter of building blocks, legos, and puzzles #octmchat
A3: I would love to see a vlog about where they saw math or how they used math - along with a reflection of what they felt they learned. Could use @Flipgrid to share ideas with classmates throughout the summer. #octmchat
A4: Can we use the community @Flipgrid as our Commit to Action? I'm also working on a list of books, games & such to share with @BRN_Elementary parents over the summer. #octmchat#brnbears
A4 maybe sending an email blast with different games or problems every couple weeks Ss could try with a link to padlet. #ADElovesmath#octmchat@AltonDarby
A4: I think I am going to advertise an incentive for students who use their online math programs in the summer, redeemable at the beginning of the year. #octmchat
A2 I recently stumbled across multiplication squares- it’s a cross between the square game at Cracker Barrel and multiplication facts. My Ss love the strategy involved and have gotten quicker with their fluency. They beg to play!#octmchat
The #OCTMchat is almost over, but we would love it if you and your students shared your math experiences using @Flipgrid! It would be great to see videos from teachers and students all around Ohio! The flipgrid code is 8d6d96 or simply follow the link: https://t.co/4RtfzLYfpn
Sadly, our time is up for tonight's #OCTMchat, but feel free to keep the conversation going! Thank you for joining the discussion and don't forget to use the @Flipgrid to share math experiences!
