A1) Schools are built around adults’ schedules and needs not the students’. A shift and acceptance in what’s best needs to happen.
A1 most teachers teach the way they learned when they were in school b/c it worked for them. Times have changed though!

Stick around and join me on at 7:30 PST as we discuss 'Reform vs Transform' in education.
Glad to see you this morning. Hope all is well!
- Good morning Brad and to Ll I my PLN
What do you mean by "work better"?
Good morning,
Jim from NJ
Middle School math teacher
excited to learn about Uncommon Learning.
A1 Schools work better for adults because only adult voices are honored. Change the system by listening to & collaborating w/ Ss.
A1) Adults make the decisions looking through adult filters. We forget how a child sees things and what their needs are
could u repost the questions I don't see them
Schls could work better 4 Ss by including them in decision making processes on district, bldg, & classroom levels
A1) All about the schedule to meet the needs of contracts, transitions, when electives occur, grades, comfort in what we know.
A1: Our schools were designed to meet the needs of adults a long time ago and haven't evolved as the purpose of our schools has
Stopping by this morning after seeing that and were on the playground. Brian, HS principal from Mass.
Sorry to be missing discussing his new amazing book on but someone has to work for
Good morning, christina from MD, grade 3
Hi Cass, Senior Teacher, @ an International (High) School
In effect, what we've done is create an adult system…which has effectively moved us away from authentic learning.
A1: The answer very much depends on how student-focused your school is. Are your school decisions too teacher-centred?
A1: Much is driven by contracts and unions.
The parochial / traditional philosophy must be replaced with a progressive mindset
Good morning Got my two cups of coffee ready for some
A1 - adults know how to "do school" We created the system and the game. Students need sense of ownership to truly trust it
If you love join tomorrow morning at 9am ET to talk about school time - should the day be extended? bring a friend
A1 So much of what we do is for administrative convenience, to make things neat and tidy and not messy.
A1: A focus on student learning & less on teaching will help create more dynamic learning environments for students
Morning from sunny Florida where winter has arrived ... dropping into the 60s ... Dennis MS Social Studies at a school
I love PNC Park in Pittsburgh. That's my favorite baseball stadium.
A1 School works for most adults bc most adults are not in it for the kids, adult driven vs. student driven.
A1: Adults are making the decisions…and not always thinking Ss first.
A1: For the most part school worked for us as students. We perpetuate the system. Solution: see it as a student.
A1: Schools are based on cognitive biases- "stuck" w/ traditional models.
A1- We must be willing to question the things that "have always been." Even if those things are most convenient for adults.
I don't know about meet needs of adults, but make it easier for them.
A1: Unfortunately, all about control. Adults set up & run schools, so it's rigged to keep order. Focus needs to shift to learning.
A1 Need to consider Ss perspective when designing school. Should look towards 2025, not resemble 1980.
We are close! I am in Granby/ teach in East Granby!
A1: Schools are mainly designed for the adults - based on a system that goes back to the 19th century
Schools work better for adults because the emphasis has always been on the teaching instead of the learning. Kids must have a voice
retweet the question please
How can you be working if your are tweeting ?
:)
https://t.co/T0csABBuR0
Sorry to be missing discussing his new amazing book on but someone has to work for
A1. Schools have changed little over the last half-century, despite the fact that our learners have changed drastically.
A1: Schools focus more on what works best for adults, at their comfort level rather than students.
A1)Schools are designed around adult schedules, prep times, PLC time, start of day, etc, not fully around ST developmental needs
A1 the adults are scared to let go and let the kids have a voice.
Good morning Brian! Be careful on the monkey bars...lol. https://t.co/TNXEj6UGf4
Stopping by this morning after seeing that and were on the playground. Brian, HS principal from Mass.
A1 students need more than a council to advocate. They need a union.
A1 - Majority of policies, rules, procedures cater to adult interests and what is easier for them
A1: focusing more on what was learned instead of what was taught would put more of the focus on the Ss.
good morning Shawn 7th grade reading T Quakertown PA
A1: ego. A need to be in control and be authoritative.
Whose learning is it anyway?
Give up control.
Trust your students.
Traditional classrooms no longer work.
A1: The traditional school model is designed to ensure compliance & conformity. We must change to student-focused schools.
A1: Decisions are often made by focusing on the needs of adults (learning space, instructional strategies, pacing, tech integ.)
Looking for the perfect lesson and not examining understanding.
A1: Schools tend to work better for adults because they are designed by adults from an adult perspective.
A1: We often teach the way we were taught. Not always a student centered set up.
A1: Follow-up...not sure that schools worked better for adults...I believe our 'evolving' schools work better for Ss today.
A1: Use the sweeping industrial-age model of education with caution - there’s lots of progressive change going on for students
Good morning friends! Peter Cameron grade 5/6 teacher from Thunder Bay Ontario Canada
what if we placed inquiry at the heart of learning…think of how that would shift our values.
A1: because most school have Ts who are behind the curve of today's youth. Talk to Ss, explore their world- embrace change
Yes and I think it’s even more depressing than that. Even putting S first it’s easy to get decisions wrong.
A1: Mostly teacher driven, sit & get is standard. We need to break the mold where T's are facilitators & S's have ownership.
A1: In some cases, it's the "This is the way we always..." (Broken system or not). Others-- Ss voices not considered/heard
A1: what would a school look like if students designed them?
We liked the system. That's why we came back. :)
a1 Give kids a voice in their learning
A1 ahh, because adults work there & want/need it that way We all have to work together to show a better vision of how it can change
Hi great to be here with you and my PLN.
I think there is some human nature at work 2. We all want what is easier for us. Have to shift that mentality to put others 1st
A1: works better not only for adults in the system but for society as a whole - work schedules, child care - solution???
. good morning sir. Thank again for the book.
Schools work better for adults because adults set the policy according to their convenience NOT kids
A1. Current structures reflect designing learning for all to emerge w/same knowledge. We need sts inspired to create their future!
Exactly. We want kids to be "life-long learners", but we never give them the autonomy to control learning.
A1 - If we really think about it, there is often more of a focus on control, conformity, compliance, rules than on learning
A1: Schools work better for adults because some refuse to hand over keys to learning to the people that matter, our students
Schools are run by adults and unfortunately they don't always put student need first. We have to bring Ss into decision making
A1: School work better for adults bc they have voice & power. Want change? Give Ss voice, choice and opportunity to use power.
A1: We can change it by allowing each other the flexibility to be more responsive to student needs as they arise
well it's another cycle of seasons in an ever warming planet earth ..
A1 Clearly students sitting in desks for hours at a time is not something designed for kids, or humans for that matter.
Would agree - we are changing and we need to recognize the progress made
A1: Needs to Be Done: Student Choice, Voice, Collaboration, Quick Writes, Innovation, Student Leadership, & Contribution
A1: As adults & educators. We need to see learning from our students' perspective. What motivates & interests them?
A1: Fear of losing control? Ease of use? Those who focus on students and learning need to speak more loudly!
A1: Many school schedules and facilities are same as when the adults were in school. Rethink these for digital learning.
A1: do schools work on the principle that every child matters?
A1. I don't believe that most schools cater to learners of any age. Most designed to dispense info, rather than invite learning.
A1 Ts like the comfort of tradition in schools. Leaders must guide them away into the deeper waters. https://t.co/dzG8UFsOJp
Good morning everyone! Joining in my first - looking forward to a great conversation. Kamini from Toronto here.
a1) we see goals and require students to hit them within a certain amt of time- haven't learned there's a better way!
A1 In many cases, today's schools are still aimed at building students. We can change thus by building schools around our students.
A1: Because adults are "in charge" & held responsible for everything. I don't if it can be "fixed". Complete redesign of thinking.
A1 What do you mean with »work better for adults« ? What is the empirical evidence for this assertion?
A1 adults work better with pre planning for kids it more of exploration and curiosity as it should be
A1: working closely w/ Ts new to teaching - school doesn't always work better for them as adults.
A1 Schools are being on a for profit business model and everything not getting the expected ROI is eliminated.
A1: Adults lead the way. And govt adults make decisions. Learners are mostly not involved w/all of it. 1/2
A1) Must make connections to young Ss, be animated, make it fun, be flexible, patient & bring "A" game everyday
A1: Even though Ss r the "customers" of the business of schools, Ss aren't treated that way - opinions not valued or given autonomy
A1: we need to start by addressing the social emotional piece before learning can occur
Agree with that but make sure change sticks
And learning is often messy! https://t.co/HXsiDLf9AG
Schools work better for adults because the emphasis has always been on the teaching instead of the learning. Kids must have a voice
A1- schools hire good students (A students). Schools work for them. Most students aren't A students.
A1:Ed is still approached the way adults experienced it. Ts talk, Ss listen. Create experiences that foster thinking & collabration
A1: Asking students for input on school decisions makes them feel important and that they MATTER.
. that seems to be it Fred
A1) That's right. "It worked for me." And yet... it didn't, really. So lack of reflection is a factor. https://t.co/Vw9c79Y1N2
A1: We're products of our learning culture/experience. We 'succeeded' despite a culture that may have lacked deep lrning choices.
A1: many schools favor compliance vs innovation 2 change this requires critical conversations about organizational beh
A shift of instead of looking at teaching, look for evidence of student learning.
sad thing is many Ts still teach like it's 1980
I agree. I think it worked for adults b/c we didn't know any different. Our Ss now do know there are more options
I'm reading many similar answers for Q1 yet, these "frustrations/limitations" continue to happen...Why do we allow it?
A1: to be fair to schools - we always suffer from not having the resources we need - what does society value?
A1 Because schools were designed 100 years ago preparing kids for the industrial age. School must reflect the times.
A1. School policies tend to focus on the adults control and compliance. We have to focus on S learning.
Schools are often about compliance & obedience & thus the adults end up w/ the "power" when our goal should be empowering kids!
we have to shave off things we kn ow and think like them
exactly. I’m working here in KY on how to make that instructionally the norm and curriucluarly viable.
A1: As a 1st grade T, not enough play to learn time.
Good morning, Catalina. French & Spanish teacher from FL
A1: All decisions are made by well meaning adults, but kids don't have an active voice. Even more so in ES. But, it can be changed
A1 Also many ppl in power making the decisions aren't connecting w Ss daily so easier to lose sight of their interests
A1: Because adults make assumptions based on what "worked" for them as students. Old paradigms are hard to shift.
Jen Struebing from Des Plaines IL here. First timer!
A1 despite lip service to the contrary, in many schools kids are not a priority. And working/learning in those schools is hell.
A1: Those that succeeded in prior gen. are preserving that system. Until other voices captured(Ss & community)it will recapitulate
https://t.co/FWTOyheTdq
Engagement is important! A student when they walk in the door, a learner once they have ownership.
might hit close to 70 tomorrow!
Absolutely, we must shift from compliance-based to commitment-based if we want to med the needs of all students
this goes for teachers as well as students. Schools need to be about empowering all learners, no matter age or role.
Good point! How many undifferenced PD sessions have we all been to as Ts?
A1a Inertia probably. "This is how it's always been." Adults probably do it out of habit more than anything else.. +
A1 Most schools do a great job or preparing kids for…school. This results in a huge disconnect
The irony of our control-based system is when learners control learning, everybody from Ps to admin to Ts to community are inspired
A) traditions Brick-and-mortar schools are built around the convenience of staff and parents, not SS.
I think this is based on fear. We are letting fear hold us back. https://t.co/HIvk40mY7O
A1 - If we really think about it, there is often more of a focus on control, conformity, compliance, rules than on learning
Much of what we've created in current 'accountability' moves us farther away…than closer to authentic learning.
if they no longer work, why do so many Ts & admin think they do?
Yes! We need to comfortable with becoming uncomfortable! https://t.co/U1SR25kbH6
A1- We must be willing to question the things that "have always been." Even if those things are most convenient for adults.
Means that some feel that schools are set up for adults to control every aspect of what goes on in school
Can you talk more about what you mean by quick writes? Thanks
Example of a T finding the balance between adult determined curriculum while keeping Ss in mind. https://t.co/vKXKgk1vhA
I didn’t like the system, but think for most they liked the system & found great success (why they liked it)
A1 it's like breaking the poverty cycle. Teachers teach how and what they know. It can be broken but requires work
Late to the discussion. . Lisa, MS Principal in NY.
Yep! https://t.co/2jpdaX6vkI
A1: many schools favor compliance vs innovation 2 change this requires critical conversations about organizational beh
So unfortunate! I was blessed to teach SpEd at the beginning of my career-- ALL focus was on individual S learning
best learning can come when we step out of comfort zones
A1: schools were designed to teach obedience and deference. We still have the same model hundreds of years later.
. you just described the perfect setting for the sage on the stage. Sit down, shut up, and face front
Not all schools are like that now - we have to be careful in applying that generalization today
A1: many adults don't do well w/ change. Our educational system is set up on norms of the past b/c it was good enough then.
A1: Schools were designed to create workers not necessarily thinkers or learners. The focus is on compliance and conformity.
A1 - I wonder how many other industries/businesses ask a question like this? Any?
Educating kids is NOT efficient ... you sometimes have to invest a lot to get a small return, but that return makes a difference
A1: why not design schools where both the Ss and adults maximize their learning? We all learn differently, provide flexibility.
I was told maybe I should consider more traditional methods smh...
A1: Power. Control. Fiefdoms. A broken system nationally. We need to give up that control and give it to our clients--the kids.
A1 Some HS more interested in college acceptance than learning. Need colleges in this convo
A1b How to change it? Bring in someone who doesn't go to school everyday and ask them to observe for a few days then report out..+
Definitely. Schools can't remain decades behind.
A1 the people in charge of designing the learning environment, esp schedules, are removed from the classroom
Yes! Ss are insightful, thoughtful, forward thinking little people with great thinks and ideas!
Welcome to Kamini! https://t.co/bHpt3lwV9L
Good morning everyone! Joining in my first - looking forward to a great conversation. Kamini from Toronto here.
Yes. Focus on standards, standards, standards. We need balance.
A1: Ways to change the status quo? It's all going to have to begin with conversations & research.
We need to do more of this!
A1: Schools need to be driven by values as opposed to rules
A1: voice and perspective are key elements necessary for policy development. Seldom are children taught advocacy skills 2n heard
¬ only empathize with them about their beliefs but support them in realizing that their perspective is gamechanging.
The most creativity comes then, best learning sometimes come from repeated practice of worthy task.
A1: We get too caught up in but, what if, etc. Need to let go more.
Writing across the curriculum - Stop and Jot, Write on a Post-It note or , Write a paragraph, Reflection
have you seen it happen when kids are "handed the keys"? What does it look like?
Logistics are a big part. But it is also the challenge to the design of schooling. Every year is not hte same.
True! Ss need more voice and choice in their own school experiences.
A1) Need to present material in ways that appeal best to Ss minds.
A1: S-driven learning, inquiry-based, reducing T 'control', removing T from 'stage', provocations for Ss.
A1: Because we use to be the ones with the information to give to our Ss. They can get that info elsewhere now a days.
This is key, their interests are what's going to motivate & engage them in critical thinking and be curious, for self
And now we have a lot of traditions in place that are hard to break away from.
interesting idea, one size can't fit all but we see students as that 1 customer profile
A1) The system demands little from adults..easy to comply. Student learning demands a 180 shift. https://t.co/POpPwevWhP
Q1 Why do most schools work better for adults than the students and what must be done to change this?
A1 Interesting Skidmore study concluded that the most creative students were the least popular with teachers.
A1: we sometimes have adult expectations for children. We tend to forget that developmentally they are not like adults
Sorry I can’t participate more as this is a good chat. Have to start prepping for a school competition
A1c Fresh unbiased eyes & feedback methinks is just the ticket.
Totally agree. Somehow due to accountability we lose sight of the main mission of education and of the clients we have
And in some cases, that is appropriate. But it can't be "the way."
We need to prepare them 4 their world not ours
A1 conflict between one size fits all schedule and individual S needs. Find way for learning to be the constant not time.
Schools based on model of "create obedient workers" don't fit needs of modern workplace/society. Internet has changed everything.
We need strong leadership to help change that. Principals must give voice to teachers so they can give voice to students.
The issue isn't what but why. We've created a culture of me first, not just in schools but everywhere. Much bigger issue.
A1 ask our kids that a lot they've been even designing them in minecraftedu -kids talk here abt being heard, collab, fun
A1 it works for adults bc most adults have the "sit down, be quiet, & listen" mentality. They feel accomplished with this mentality
I think it's up to the individuals in each organization to ensure that's happening! Ts have to want to make that happen!
I think that question is really dependent upon the school. I don't know if anyone is completely there right now.. 1/2
True David. Accountability piece has us focused on grades, protocols instead of learning & growth
A1. In Va, students who miss the SOL pass score by a certain margin are eligible to RETAKE the test. Who does that serve?
Right. Which is tough, because it requires us to admit we don't know everything. :)
A1 Trs need to see Ss as learning-partners. We learn together but also from each another. View Ss as collaborators
We can strike a balance been guaranteed curriculum/responsive instructive. Takes rethinking the order of what we thought worked.
The good intentions of accountability requirements for teachers have changed the focus from student success to teacher success.
Right on my friend! refers to this as the cemetery effect https://t.co/dkWQzfwzsB https://t.co/AhmCuB84lR
A1. I don't believe that most schools cater to learners of any age. Most designed to dispense info, rather than invite learning.
exactly! its about allowing for their voice and their choice to matter - in all aspects - especially their learning
structure of school was designed to teach obedience. Structure hasn't changed. School does this very well.
excellent! Love this time of year!
I definitely think that some schools are closer than others 2/2
High stakes virtually guarantees that we will not. Think: Soviet.
My Superintendent wants to reform Baltimore schools 👍
A1 As educators, we must adapt to our students and teach they way they learn best. Often forgotten with so much else going on
No doubt. I’m fortunate to work at school where most (75%+) do try to put S first yet our school doesn’t work for many
I've always appreciated what happens in our best science classrooms. Inquiry, problem solving, meaningful applications.
Yes! It's not an authentic type of learning like what happens in our personal lives.
: Some HS more interested in college acceptance than learning. Need colleges in this convo ” PBGR = huge questions out there
Too many kids see school as something they need to "survive". what's up with that? Why does education have to be such a buzzkill?
A1: We need to listen to our Ss. Give them a voice. Provide choice!
A1. We know how we were taught therefore thats how it must be for today's Ss. (Not really what I believe)
Often a level of control is needed b4 freedoms can be given, bt tht indicates pwr 2control what is out of control, Ss not followers
Q2 How do you effectively engage digital learners in the content and process of learning to get results?
Well said! Ss need support in sensemaking, evaluation, communication Classrooms as think tanks not lecture halls
Yesss! https://t.co/vA8NPT4kHt
Schools based on model of "create obedient workers" don't fit needs of modern workplace/society. Internet has changed everything.
How do those things need to change to engage the modern learner?
A1: Traditional school environments favor passivity where Ts deliver information rather than tools for Ss to actively find info
there's a lot of top down thinking and that means kids are at the very bottom. Money and decision go to those at the top
A2: Give S's options to create digital demonstrations of their learning. Choice with showing mastery will give you better products.
Indeed. The best model for school is Ps, Ts, Admin, Ss, & community seeing each other as learning partners, not hierarchy.
A1: Are schools better designed for adults than for Ss? Adult interests or societal interests?
. doing this well requires a rethinking of authority, people at the top need jobs redefined so that the top is blurry
And all of those factors kill intrinsic motivation, passion, and innovation according to 's work
A1d Of course, humans (like tsunamis) tend to take the path of least resistance. How would you survive a tsunami?
Is that because adults seem to believe it 'worked' for them when they were kids?
And even though we say we want creative and innovative leaders…most hire for and want compliant leaders.
Yes the very thing supposed to improve education is actually stifling progress! https://t.co/uq8a89ltPB
Much of what we've created in current 'accountability' moves us farther away…than closer to authentic learning.
maybe we have to give up on "we" changing it. Kids can change it.
A1 maybe it's about the comfort zone adult prefer to stay in .. Students unconsciously are willing to take risk
A2 My Tech Integration page https://t.co/piRqUhQm1U First find out tech learning preferences & comfortability of students.
A2: Empower the students to utilize the resources available to digital learners to take ownership of their learning.
A2 I use to engage students in direct instruction when needed or games/webquests/simulations to explain
A2) For digital and analog learners you must build a relationship so you can discover their point of need then seek engagement
Agreed. Open eyes, change perspective, encourage healthy risks. Get off the porch! https://t.co/fajS8Dquco
We need strong leadership to help change that. Principals must give voice to teachers so they can give voice to students.
A1) To address lack of student feedback, teachers can replace some of their tests with surveys. That might measure learning, too.
We must not only hear our students but we must give them agency & act on their ideas! That shifts the focus from teacher to kids!
Yes, my husband is bringing change to his company
- agree with this - creativity is not a rule follower
Great point. It's tough to let a group of students know, when trying something new, the Ss may know more than the Ts
I was reading about a VC firm that has meetings in Minecraft. So, yup, it's a thing:) My son'd sign up!!
A1: No doubt that education is changing. In transition we're working on what that needs to look like now & in the future. Not easy.
It is a pleasure modeling digital leadership w/
There's a hack/app for that!
Yes! If learning is the goal it has to be the non-negotiable, not the schedule
A1b: Adults should 1) engage students in decision making & 2) spend a few days shadowing their students.
A1: To have more student centred schools, we need more teachers willing to step out of their comfort zones
A1: having an early years background, I think we feel pressure to cover content and forget that student are on a learning journey
"We get to see everyone's ideas" "We talk about what makes the good ones good so we all get better" S quote https://t.co/Q8KJGphwaj
A2: Start with the important questions & then find tech that transforms the experience where appropriate.
A1: What is society's top priority was the child - what would that do to school design? Then we could center on the child
Sounds like an interesting read! Do you have the link?
A1b : Invite Ss to share a few (desired) learning outcomes & integrate them into curriculum to make it more inclusive
A2 Give authentic, engaging questions with time to explore the answers
If many kids aren't good at school by grade 12, I guess school isn't even good at that. https://t.co/RDd7yzLJ2d
A1 Most schools do a great job or preparing kids for…school. This results in a huge disconnect
agreed. It is a new ballgame now.
Have you ever used instructional rounds to show T's that are good examples?
is trending on Twitter in
A2: during lesson planning you have to consider the 14 year old boy who loves video games. https://t.co/kYORIbbisi
Q2 How do you effectively engage digital learners in the content and process of learning to get results?
It's an important idea to keep in mind. A school isn't "doing the right thing" just because it did once.
accountability measures have resulted in fear, compliance & measurement driving many schools, teachers & students.
A2: Frustrating that this question is still being asked - why are many still producing students of yesterday instead of tomorrow?
Its a shift. Instead of teaching Ss "what to learn" We should focus on "how to learn"
Big time! Ss need more autonomy over their own learning!
A2- We have to put the students at the center of the process of learning. School should be done with/for them not to them.
at its core it is still adults telling children what to do. Even if the to-do list has changed.
who does the SOL serve? I'd say a retake serves the kids
If we really cared about the kids high school would not start until 10AM because thats when they truly are awake...
QUESTION 2:
https://t.co/GvHIgQe9iX
Q2 How do you effectively engage digital learners in the content and process of learning to get results?
But with a spirit of curiosity and inquiry we can do it! https://t.co/jtp0lMisBc
A1: No doubt that education is changing. In transition we're working on what that needs to look like now & in the future. Not easy.
this relates the whole factory age school model (20th cent) vs. 21st century model
great idea - now we need to build them
A2) tap into their passions, give their voice a platform, Connect, Connect, Connect!!!
A2 - it's all about the technology
A2 - We can’t forget thee “learning” piece when we begin to implement digital
An important point here. Student voice is at the heart of our work.
Agreed John. More of an Industrial Age focus instead of learning
I wonder how Ss & cooperative behaviours vary across countries and socio/economic variations
And 'modelling' this for Ss can be crippling when it comes to their learning.
A2) Give Ss the freedom to create and explore using digital tools;
Just watching some Ts for just a few minutes confirms this!
A2: you have to provide more feedback & in real time. You have to allow collaboration & you have to allow choice with technology
And yet, there is nothing content specific about it. Schools should be focused more around questions than answers.
So true.Until we realize there is more to teaching&learning than a test score we r going 2 struggle w/this https://t.co/42aKjLCzSB
The good intentions of accountability requirements for teachers have changed the focus from student success to teacher success.
Yes, I see it with my twin daughters - grade 10 😞
“: Yes, my husband is bringing change to his company ” Can you share more?
A2 Model and emphasize that tech is a tool. It's a means to communicate and collaborate.
Was just thinking about this: the way I see things in the classrm is not at all the way my learners see them. Must be cognizant.
Our classrooms should be “micro democracies”. Asking people to learn in an environment different doesn’t make sense.
A1. Schools work better for adults than students because students have to follow the rules & teachers get to make them-my daughter
Some teachers ok with that, hesitant to lose some control.
Self-efficacy should be the lesson plan goal. https://t.co/VGlqysqrTk
We must not only hear our students but we must give them agency & act on their ideas! That shifts the focus from teacher to kids!
To a point, yes, but good leadership in schools can minimize some of the frustrating external pressures
A2) Engagement happens when choice is given.
And it is the soup they have been swimming in their whole lives!
Our world requires digital literacy
Blogs

Change is hard for most people. Collaboration is key to help show new ways/techniques/strategies to reach kids. ......
A2 Ss need support in learning multiple tools for building understanding, creating, &communicating EMPOWER Ss then give them CHOICE
Just this week I talked about how many times I had my notes w/drawings torn up in my school experience
A1 we have a challenge to shift America's schls 2 now a gen of tchers entering prof who grew up in NCLB
We were talking about this last week and It's an "everywhere" issue... https://t.co/utd2cjtG6i
The issue isn't what but why. We've created a culture of me first, not just in schools but everywhere. Much bigger issue.
A2: Make sure students know there is not ONE right way. Look at individual strengths and needs. Value student input.
A2 As an admin, model expectations by leading Ts in PD that infuses technology authentically.
A2 Giving them a choice in how to do the work
The tech must be a tool to get the information or develop synthesis in the learning. We need to use the tools to get better learning
A2 That is what i really have a problem with: We do not have WiFi at schools at Frankfurt. The authorities do not _want_ it.
A2a Step 1. Gather a diverse group of people & define "effective engagement", "content", "process", and "results". looks like what?
. IMO it's trash policy & regulations w/ those at the top thinking they are more important than they are
So getting kids to write more by writing in smaller "chunks"? High frequency low amplitude?
A1: No need to change if memorization & retention of knowledge remain the primary school goals. Example: Finals Week. UGH!
All the research confirms this! https://t.co/KRJZbXOOlN
If we really cared about the kids high school would not start until 10AM because thats when they truly are awake...
A2 Know your Ss as individuals and be their champion. Find out what drives them. Ss should know you are their biggest supporter
Surprised? : A1 Interesting Skidmore study concluded most creative students were the least popular with teachers.
”
Yes. Schools have to think forward rather than lead back.
A2: Show them, by using their tools and media, that we are with them on this journey. Let's tweet, Instagram, etc.
A2 Putting Ss first means listening to them, honoring their interests & even asking for their help. They have amazing talents.
true. Ever read about Spiral Dynamics?
A2: Sometimes it is get out of the way within structured culture of the class. Ss then need a goal and promote their passion.
Joining in from Houston, Good Morning!
I saw it when I was teaching APUSH in the morning ... kids barely able to function let alone think.
To me the single greatest engagement tool is the simple but elegant Question Formulation Technique strategy.
A2 Building a culture of learning alongside each other, engaging parents, day 1 using synchronous tools to begin the conversation.
Yes exactly - thats v well said Give Ss a platform to share interests/desires from the v beginning
Mic drops via this morning https://t.co/ZXbkb2SB70
A1. Schools work better for adults than students because students have to follow the rules & teachers get to make them-my daughter
A2 - Student success with relies on a strong foundation in instructional design
And the process to approach questions to discover their own answers?
And when it's not present as in so many? I vote for nationally mandated yoga, lol.
Welcome! Always good to add new voices.
Follow kids' leads. If there is a tech they like, find a way to make it work in your class. For example, my students make movies
last tweet continued: ...and be proactive. Assess the situation. Put myself in their shoes. Discuss w/them.
A2: Instead of worrying about pacing & covering curriculum we should focus on constructing goals w/students & increasing dialogue.
A2: Must be a reason for learning. Emotional connection needed. Use digital tools to empower Ss to create real change in the world.
Yes! We have moved from wonder, passion, innovation 2 where everything 4 the mandated assessments.
A1: I'm not sure that schools work better for adults with the amount of focus on testing accountability especially in urban edu
A2: Analyze the amount of time students are being compliant vs the amount of time students are contributing https://t.co/szX4WBKm5w
A2: We engage digital learners as we engage all learners, meet them where they are and provide challenge and support as needed
Agree. We need to use different methods at an early age to allow our Ss to see the new norm of Ss growth as a focus
bad word choice? I guess i see so many kids who have no "say" in what/how they learn...
A2 - Connect it to their lives. They need to know it's for their growth.
A1: models such as inquiry and problem solving based learning engage students in an authentic way, based on their interests
A2 Personalized content makes the curriculum more engaging/interesting for students
Not necessarily, especially if we all take our cues from the situations we find ourselves in. Students are capable.
A2. One start is to make the learning environment as close to relevant as possible.
A2b Step 2. Do not change (resist resist resist) anything until all agree what you're trying to do & what it all looks like now..
A2: By using tech, you have the ability to create perspective for education, allows for Ss to think, adapt, create, & work together
A2 model proper utilization of .. integrate effectively and seamlessly to support pedagogy
Creative Ss think outside the box and question. That doesn't always sit well with some Ts. So sad.
A1) In high school Ts allow pacing guides and grades to drive instruction. Ss knowledge should drive instruction
I've learned half the tech I've experimented w after talking to kids & then I bring things to them too. Voxer is big now at school
A2: Engagement happens within the Zone of Proximal Development, whether digital or not, stretch with assist. to dev. indep. mastery
A2 ensure they have support to take them from where they are to the next visible step, does this well
A2) Make the results relevant.
Students are chasing learning, they are chasing the journey
What is needed to create that sort of environment?
A2 Teach S to use twitter 4 & Google Scholar 4 research. In-person old fashioned games (Bingo, Jeopardy) 4 direct instruction
I think we can expose digital learners to lots of tools so they will be able to choose the one that best fits the task.
A2: Find out what Ss are interested in and they will be engaged. Take time to get to know what makes them tick!!
more interdisciplinary schedules less siloed subjects.
One of the greatest disservices of education is that we have neither created or developed Ed leaders to be creative, innovative.
all still suggest we have it and can deem children have what we have.
so true. Can you give an example of what this looks like in practice?
A2: Use digital tools to give students more choice and voice in their learning. Can help provide relevance.
We talked about that in RI but the idea seemed to fade. I'd love to see what this would look like.
A2: The same way we do with analog content. Ss must have a need/purpose for learning. Otherwise it is a waste of time.
And make appropriate adjustments to lessons and approach!
A2. Another way? Actually give learners choice in what is studied, how it is explored, and what is assessed.
A2: what do you mean by results? What are the true results of an education?
He publishes yearbooks- he listens to me,his teen daughters. Creates books with greenscreen/ interactive/ AR
A2: We really need to define effectively engage when it comes to digital learning & content. Anyone have a good definition?
... and yet, we want to be research based educators/schools, but we don't like this one because it changes everything.
A1: The adult side of education tends to be based on compliance too, which is why many educators lose their passion for the work.
Agreed. Tech integration definitely needs to be modeled from the top down.
give Ss authentic questions that drive inquiry. Then have choices for Ss to choose when researching and finding answers.
Adults design the curriculum. Give Ss a voice - ask them what needs to change in their schools https://t.co/UFxoLwzdgI
Q1 Why do most schools work better for adults than the students and what must be done to change this?
A2) basic, not to forbid them from having a device in the room; open responses up to what they find, sometimes immediately
A2c Step 3. Ask learners what the terms mean, too. They're going to be doing the bulk of the work so they should have a say, too
A2: Begin by listening to our Ss...what they already know, are familiar with, what they might be able to share with us.
A2 Restructure the "delivery" systemt. Content should be student driven, pbl genius Hr, Ss driving Ts guiding
Right. When learners answer their own questions it builds a love for the learning process.
A2 Give teachers freedom to take chances and make mistakes. Encourage innovation and risk taking.
A2 Calling students digital learners is a form of fixed mindset. It's a falacy. They are individuals, get to know them as such
yep - build - what we do w every dime we get and action we take
Exactly! Help them see learning as a process and tech as tools int he process
Love the emphasis on feedback here/ critical to growth/ effective use of digital tools streamline the process
I think there's room for both. Not every second of T/S interaction has been driven by accountability. https://t.co/BZ1VJweL59
Yes the very thing supposed to improve education is actually stifling progress! https://t.co/uq8a89ltPB
Much of what we've created in current 'accountability' moves us farther away…than closer to authentic learning.
A2: teach students executive skill development 2 enable them the opportunity 2 take proxy of their own learning and explorations
Yes!Collegiality Continuum to assess &set goals for T's. Eye opening for T's who thought they were "true sharers".
A2: Students need to be inspired, challenged and engaged in meaningful ways. The device is not so important
A2: by allowing Ss to take control of their path. Allow autonomy, topic and method, for students to be engaged.
A2. Tech is simply a tool that allows us to engage, provide Ss with an authentic world and choice in their learning.
There are lots of "research based" improvements that we don't implement because they are not convenient for adults.
A2: use technology with a purpose, Ss get engaged
A2: by finding new means to parts of my instruction process. Introducing kahoot more for warm/ups or reviews has been huge.
A2. Student agency and ownership. Regardless of content/context. Starts with leadership
Ask students what they did in school. Response: nothing. School is done to them. We have to get out of their way!
A2: Engagement can happen when students feel valued & when it is ok to try new things without fear of failure.
A2 Let your own digital learning be visible. Be publicly active in social media.
Traditional literacy and digital literacy can compliment each other
Dev real world skills
Dev tech literate Ss
A2 - Authenticity, joy, creativity and design. Without them any digital transformation will not succeed
A3 in order for students to listen, we need to teach them in the world they live in and that world has tech!
A2 - I try to amaze students with what they can do with tech. They can create and share it like never before.
A2 Embrace digital options and involve the students to engage. Google CR, kahoot, digital exit tickets
That might be their peers, teacher, older Ss, younger Ss, parents, community etc 2/2
I like your thinking - go find the balance!
No doubt. I think that is what we continue to see today. Modeling of Industrial Age education methods
A2: yes, let more Ss lead/participate in Edcamps
ultra capable. More than we know. But most schools still are run by do what we allow kids to do principles.
Does research consider sports & activities? Fields without lights? Not the whole pic for me.
https://t.co/gwbg2vniPy
All the research confirms this! https://t.co/KRJZbXOOlN
If we really cared about the kids high school would not start until 10AM because thats when they truly are awake...
No we still have classrooms doing great work, but it's in the back of everyone's mind.
A2) Appropriate planning, student choice, and time for collaboration. Ts must think outside the box and provide options for all ss
A4d Step 4. Where's the gap between adults & learners? Start there. Measure everything. Go small before large.
Content of product maybe, but not content of knowledge. They need to learn some basic knowledge. It is trajectory.
"No. I'm not connecting your games to my Facebook so you can get rewards & 'tag friends.'" Digital Smackdown for the Very Young
Our leaders create the environment…but how well have we prepared our leaders to do the 'heavy' lifting this work requires?
Healthy risks are good! Has to start at the top. Get off the porch and take a chance!
Instructional design is important. I think classrooms can turn into activities and apps without inst. design.
A2: We must be mindful about providing Ts with appropriate support. Most want to make these changes, don't know how.
Good morning learning leaders! Greg- 2nd grade, MD. Checking in a bit late, but ready to learn.
a2-don't force it and put it in them. Ask them to use tech to show that they've understood the lesson
A2 Effectively engage students through meaningful and relevant technology integration that highlights a best practice
A2: Schools need to help Ss discover the value of tech tools as vehicles for growth and learning.
A2: Provide exposure to as many experiences and tools as you can, let them explore, and give them options! We learn by tinkering
A2 leave the learning environment as open as possible for a child to use the tools most accessible to them and add as you go
A2: I also try to differentiate the pathways that they use to get to the knowledge. They can explore diff songs.
A2) To engage Ss we need to expand our ideas of traditional school and think outside the box. Throw out the box and innovate!
I think that's why schools are slow to change. But physiologically, teens are not their best at 8am.
A2: well "You can't just sprinkle 21st century skills on the 20th century doughnut.”C.Dede change mindset + tech
A1: Start with the definition of learning. How do we learn? WHY is there RESISTANCE?
A2:By sharing the power of the information they are about to learn - explain authenticity & relevance from the start
A2) If your school handbook punishes Ss for bringing devices or the wifi is locked up, that is district wide discouragement!
A2: Connect them with native French speakers around the world. Engagement is through the roof when we have that opportunity.
absolutely. Starts with leadership & modeling. Taking risks ourselves tells others it's ok to try-and maybe fail
We have a long way to go…the problem is we're just beginning to walk as society sprints.
A2: we effectively engage learners by having an innovator's mindset see
A2e That's how we did it at place like Intel. Agree where we are, want to be, find gaps, measure everything then ideate/test.
And we learn so much from each other. I love to hear students think out loud!
Digital tools allow us to connect anywhere in the world to bring learning experiences to our Ss. Why are we reading outdated texts?
Can't be "Give" needs to be expectation. As admin we don't give anything,we model and expect things. They then deliver
can be a great resource to engage when paired with quality planning, instruction, and reflection.
we have to get past the “knowing” before “doing” paradox in edu. Just let people try and then learn.
A2: by providing examples of how they could use tech to complete math work. Make videos, start a blog, etc...
A2 Invitations to engage from experts in areas of study provide pathways to experience value of conversations outside of school.
And we can even expand upon how does it look. Also contemplate how does it sound, taste and feel? That changes things.
and work with Ss and Ts any where in the world. Collaboration at its finest.
A1: True, but we can't ignore that we are preparing students for a college system which lives by finals. https://t.co/zExt8l1fGs
A1: No need to change if memorization & retention of knowledge remain the primary school goals. Example: Finals Week. UGH!
A2: We must walk the walk--embrace the messiness, excitement, joy, & surprise when Ss drive much of the learning.
A2: I see a lot of answers =tech w/ engagement. Can't we engage Ss w/out tech? Tech is just one of the tools we can use.
Yes. Writing encourages metacognition. Students will become better thinkers and writers with practice.
That's what I think too. Why is that?
I Like that you included joy - needs to be cultivated in the Ts and then the Ss
what about the creative Ts who think outside the box? that doesn't always sit well with some Ts either
A2) Behooves us 2 work backwards. Conceive real world skill set. Adapt content 2 thr present/future lives. https://t.co/tD28KPxyYJ
Q2 How do you effectively engage digital learners in the content and process of learning to get results?
Yes and teachers have to model how to take risks.
A2 Use current trends in tech, music, gaming and learning to incorportate into lessons.Ss will remember the exp & retain the info
Learning and idea flow are going to be paramount for us to create leaders to push forward.
A2: allow students to discover, explore using inquiry based learning.
A2) No rules against the use of tech in learning. None. School is the perfect opportunity to practice digital citizenship.
All too often many are just happy that kids are engaged w/ tech, but engagement doesn’t atomically mean they are learning
. Ts have difficulty with reading the data and how to take what they know for academic and social gains- suggestions?
A3 devices are learning tools. Part of everyday life and the pursuit of understanding. not a problem, but an opportunity!
In a sense is a form of a quick write. It assists with our reflection on teaching and learning.
I completely agree. Technology is not replacing good teaching and planning. It enhances it!
A2: Part of answer to this Q is within the PD we provide our teachers. We want digital learners. We need to train digital educators
A2f Caveat: avoid depending on technology. Methinks it's tangential. People got us into this mess, people will get us out of it.
yes & a positive one is so needed as well - role model
A2: be a digitally friendly school: BYOD, Learning Commons and a T who partners with other Ts to support this
I dunno if I agree with that. Tech is moving fast and it makes chaos, not innovation
I see so many tweets about how we can give or allow voice. They have voice! Honest answer: "stop suppressing"
Value perspective, model &make thinking visible, tap in2 funds of knowledge, value https://t.co/GSLlovkMhi
A2: Make sure students know there is not ONE right way. Look at individual strengths and needs. Value student input.
Depends. Sometimes u have to know before u do. Can't write classroom constitution without know what that is.
“what we allow kids to do principles” are essentially rules
Expectations are important, but expectations become pressures and that stifles creativity.
Or blocks the network so all students have VPNs and teacher's can't get educational videos, lol...
I think a lot of this has to happen at the grad classes that Ts take to be admins.
Q3 Why implement mobile devices in schools? How do you ensure success?
.Check out for great worldwide conversation about school improvement and technology.
A2 - when classes in our schools engage w/classes from other countries learning explodes - tech is the driver
A3 My Mobile Learning pg https://t.co/HTCHkklBz4 Most have devices We need to show them how to use them educationally & responsibly
Have you done this? Would love ideas on how to make this happen!
If it has no purpose, it has no place in the classroom, i.e., worksheets
I couldn't agree more! "Coverage" should be an outlawed word. Put down the manuals and connect with kids. https://t.co/aDZjY9Q0JG
A2: Instead of worrying about pacing & covering curriculum we should focus on constructing goals w/students & increasing dialogue.
A2. However, we must also understand that Ss don't know what they don't know-->expose them to a variety of meaningful experiences
A3) mobile devices allow for independence and puts the knowledge in the students’ hands. Ensure success by the PD & pedagogy of Ts.
Yes. Collaboration is a 21st century skill we all need. Smartest person in the room is the room!
We have learning organizations that aren't learning. And we get leaders that aren't leading…
A2: Offer them open-ended, authentic problem solving opportunities where they can leverage technology.
A2: Ss need to have an invested interest in the learning. They need to see the relevance & know their voice matters in the results
what outdated texts? From a literature point of view, historical & canonical texts are key to understanding humanity.
No, unfortunately, I'm not. Some Ts tell me of trouble they have w/ Ss & they thrive in music. I get it.
Tips for developing authentic learning: Why shouldn’t students choose how and what they learn? https://t.co/L1VLyO0I1H
As a leader I am getting push back from some staff that I listen to students over staff. Change is hard. https://t.co/8J2U2JH0xi
We must not only hear our students but we must give them agency & act on their ideas! That shifts the focus from teacher to kids!
A2: we need to engage them by stepping out of our comfort zones and into their digital world.
I think it's impt to encourage tchrs to not think of document production as ICT, it's so much more
Good morning SatChat. Mark from Southern NJ, a little late, but glad to be here
- values must be embedded in everyday learning where Ss can construct their own meaning
maybe we need to be honest and instead of saying "we are research based" to "we do what is convenient and cheap"
The person in front blazing the path with a machete always has it harder than those who follow.
Very true! You Tube is sacred!! https://t.co/iK3FQGjffo
Or blocks the network so all students have VPNs and teacher's can't get educational videos, lol...
I assign seats because it stops the behaviors I don't want in my classroom. I should be discovering why those behaviors bother me.
A3: First, strong class community, then create "SOP's" together for mobile device usage, then dig.citizenship. Finally, use
We "make room" for risks and innovation in the classroom and invite teachers to try new things. No pressure.
You don't have to wait for in-service to offer PD!
Model. Model. Model.
https://t.co/aORVt78xlW
A2: Part of answer to this Q is within the PD we provide our teachers. We want digital learners. We need to train digital educators
Who is driving digital transformation (cloud, mobile, social, analytics & apps tech) at your school?
A2: Joining in late! Shari Heyman, 5th grade teacher. Preparing in advance for Ss to utilize digital learning to it's fullest.
A2: engagement - create a generation of 'problem-finders' rather than problem solvers
i agree. they have a voice - we need to make sure it's heard & many more need to start listening!
A2 By well designed instruction. Instruction that uses every tool inc tech in a way that enhances S learning
I'm getting away from the idea of leaders and towards space to lead
And chaos is where opportunity lies…opportunity for transformation.
I realized this again this week from Ts during instructional rounds.
Yep. So long as the powers-that-be gather input from everyone involved on look/feel of the experience
Which then goes back to your tweet about how those non-leaders are still getting hired.
A2 - 1 step in using tech for learning is make sure we are using tech effectively for learning. Model it.
Jumping in late! Morning everyone. Angeline from Ohio
exactly! In my experience most schools feel that rules drive learning rather than the other way around.
i bet they could. then name it after the fact. Madison was kinda making the US constitution up as he went along
I actually crave change & enjoy the "new", but many colleagues prefer the control that comfort provides
yes. Problems arise when culture is set to do things the way they have always been done.
Yes! That's where clarion coaching and developing a culture of collaboration is huge
So true https://t.co/aCH0cUXuOb
All too often many are just happy that kids are engaged w/ tech, but engagement doesn’t atomically mean they are learning
I think those Ts are perceived as threatening to other Ts that aren't willing to change. What if I fail?
i agree my friend...i agree.
A2. Experiences should move along a continuum of S-directed & T-directed in order to offer a comprehensive learning exp.
A2: Student engagement by giving them ownership of their learning. Being open to their interests, and believing in growth mindset
A3 mobility leads to agency leads to inquiry leads to learning
the retake offers the learning that should happen with testing. So I see it as a good thing.
Yes, no different from teaching and guiding kids in the use of a compass or a Busen burner.
Role of technology is to support and/or enhance learning. Building initiatives and practices around tech will spell disaster
Ss have rich conversations and debunk their own misconceptions collaboratively if we let them!
A3. They may forget their HW, but they never forget their phone!!!
Yes! and passion projects can result in powerful student centered learning. https://t.co/SvV7nLhDm9
A2. Another way? Actually give learners choice in what is studied, how it is explored, and what is assessed.
Longer amounts of time to explore ideas? Teachers from diff silos collaborating?
Very true. And we all achieve more when we achieve together.
I see tech as having most potential for storytelling, curating, creating & connecting.
Engage Ss in learning by leveraging digital tools & peers+experts to break down the 4 walls https://t.co/W4PrtrMKWH
A2 Invitations to engage from experts in areas of study provide pathways to experience value of conversations outside of school.
Thanks. Great reminder that takes time but has significant value. https://t.co/0DOPuFh1rG
A2 Invitations to engage from experts in areas of study provide pathways to experience value of conversations outside of school.
Hey you might enjoy my latest piece How to Bring Global Collaboration into the 21st Century - https://t.co/xrDj6ZJpLS
A3: Students are already proficient in the use of technology. Why would we ask them to take a step back??
Hey you might enjoy my latest piece How to Bring Global Collaboration into the 21st Century - https://t.co/pJr52pX5Qo
I went to an Edcamp in MA where Ss were part of the sessions we could attend. Powerful!
A3: Learning occurs everywhere. The computer lab is not sustainable. Kids have the largest databases in their pocket. Harness it!
Organizations move towards status quo…compliance is always chosen over creativity. Safer.
A2 I have recently incorporated and from developers like to engage and asses my Ss in all subj
A2 we have to remember Ss need to learn how to use digital tools for more than social media. They need
PD also.
A2: Engagement without challenge does not equal learning
A2: Student centered needs to be more than a buzzword - so hard for many Ts to relinquish control to make it happen.
A3- Mobile devices allow us to meet the needs of students in ways that aren't possible without them.
A3: Mobile device use is outpacing traditional tech use. Shifting our instruction and resource to take advantage of this is key.
what is the problem with that? https://t.co/W85knGi241
Role of technology is to support and/or enhance learning. Building initiatives and practices around tech will spell disaster
Unacceptable. Our ethos should be about growth, not control. https://t.co/6AuiPoXbfz
A1 Interesting Skidmore study concluded that the most creative students were the least popular with teachers.
Textbooks full of half-truths, written to sell rahter than inform, outdated when they are printed are norm in most schools
A3) Why fight the battle of not implementing mobile devices? Ss will engage more with their own devices.
1 example would be to teach ss to use advanced features of google search to incr their access to resources.
A3: Rigor and Relevance - Mobile devices are the world we live in. Students are comfortable learning with mobile devices.
A3: mobile devices are what people use to get information, even on standard websites. Success from trusted use in safe environ 1st
Not when I do it. It depends on who you are? Conv. about lessons are continuous to push each other.
A1 A small group of adults is usually responsible for the decision making. Other stakeholders may not feel they have a voice.
Definitely…need a balance of mindset, innovation, and tech tools PD. https://t.co/n0TYRO98mv
A2: Part of answer to this Q is within the PD we provide our teachers. We want digital learners. We need to train digital educators
Utlimately, we want the technology to be invisible with learning magnified. https://t.co/uTDsu6Wvbg
Role of technology is to support and/or enhance learning. Building initiatives and practices around tech will spell disaster
Maybe, but in recent conversations I had, I sure have been shocked at how traditional some want to keep it in edu.
said it best 1:1 is about people. It's about relationships. Łearning is a personal experience. https://t.co/JsiqLWBrRY
I always feel we must be careful with the words we use. Once we give or allow, we say that we control it.
A2: Most of my Ss still need to be shown how tech can be used for learning. To most of them, it is simply for games or music.
Very true. https://t.co/TUTBE5EIYf
A2. However, we must also understand that Ss don't know what they don't know-->expose them to a variety of meaningful experiences
Often surprised at names that come up as challenging Ss b/c they do well in band.
Our teachers/students are using Kahoot and there is 100% engagement. is one of them!
totally true - we need to have an innovator's mindset first - technology is a distant second
Good Morning. joining late.
Ownership of learning is a great incentive for kids to learn. That is not possible in a system demanding control of everything.
A3) Enriches classroom education, provides access to a wealth of knowledge, more personalized help to Ss
But they see those amazing things along the path first!
I feel like most are beyond this now. really makes that concept go away
Or a culture that does not trust or ask students what they need.
And we shouldn't have to call it or passion projects. Schools that have it "right" do this all the time.
A2: I love tech. My kids use it daily. But their best day was when I let them build things in the woods. We need balance, folks.
A3: allow Ss to learn the way they want to learn. More Ss are comfortable w/ device in hand than book. Maybe sad, but true
A3: Build the relationship of trust w/ Ss & then give them the tools - all tools - they need to be successful. No worries.
A3)Mobile Device are positive incentivefor our Ss and provide a variety of instructional strategies, communication, and engagement
a3- include bc the more your classroom resembles real life, the more relevant your instruction and the better you prepare them
A2 forget content as driver:create contexts w learners 4 learning & infuse content
A2 We need to understand how Ss operate in the digital space and how we want Ss to operate in the digital space.
good point Tony - student voice is critical
I see. I would love to try one during the school day, at the end of the year
I guess I've never been a textbook user. :)
I admire what you are doing. Yes, change is hard. Listening to the S voice is a first step in making the shift.
A3 Are they really? Have you ever seen a student using a word processor appropriate without instruction?
such a great point. I can say the same about our kindergarten students. important to keep in mind.
exactly. Many school schedules don't facilitate this.
Also a system that fails our kids and poorly prepares them for the life skills necessary to be successful.
: Teach them responsible use of technology and that learning is a continuous process. It NEVER stops.
A3: Top engagement in French involves flat classroom experiences. We need the tech to make it happen.
sometimes we get so bogged down on "content" we lose focus on what is important ... the kids.
A2 - Tech opens doors of opportunity. I want it in the students' hands. Success happens when they see that.
Q3:We started BYOD and have built capacity through PD at faculty meetings by having 21st Cent. Team members model apps!
You are right
It could be right now... on Twitter... with our PLN :)
https://t.co/3HcLrNhuHc
You don't have to wait for in-service to offer PD!
Model. Model. Model.
https://t.co/aORVt78xlW
A2: Part of answer to this Q is within the PD we provide our teachers. We want digital learners. We need to train digital educators
Agree! The tech tools provide choice and a variety of ways to create and demonstrate learning. https://t.co/aw0xnamYZ0
The tech must be a tool to get the information or develop synthesis in the learning. We need to use the tools to get better learning
The only thing that stifles creativity is the word "no"
A3: Mobile devices can facilitate learning that’s why we should explore their use in schools
A:3 process/based implementation must be purposeful and mindful of the objective. First determine the tech objective and the why.
Great point and the collaborative element of allows us to create friction w/ our ideas and others.
A3 - Real-time feedback, hands-on learning, gasification, more accessible/personal, learning can take place anytime/anywhere
Again I defer to https://t.co/EPIsr3uIE1
A2: Part of answer to this Q is within the PD we provide our teachers. We want digital learners. We need to train digital educators
A2: avoid sit/get, infuse pbl into content&offer application assg, closer we are to Ss centered the more engaged Ss will be
A3: Last week, I saw a 7th grade student recording his group's science project on his phone. He was so excited to post it online!
A3. Tools that learners use should have a place in learning. To me, it's that simple.
What if we built units of study tht “guaranteed” some student experiences but were “responsive” to student inquiry? That’s my goal.
A3: Why DON'T schools allow this?? Instant resources are kept in lockers- leaders need to stop the excuses!!
Q3Mobile devices are apart of life. 4 Ss 2 b future ready we need 2 give them tools that one would have in real world.
perhaps that's because we won't admit we don't have control to begin with.
A3: Mobile devices are extension of most Ss at this point. Need to model and teach the potential for the tech they carry daily.
A3: It's like asking the eye doctor to use a scalpel instead of a laser!
A2: recognize that digital learning can happen 24/7 and that we don't need it to happen 9-3:30
Me either. Had a great lesson last week where we used them as supports to build bridges, though. ;)
A3. Mobile devices allow all schools to utilize the resources Ss have. -authentic learning experiences, Wifi, support of Ts
A3: mobile devices have the ability to help engage. Expectations and trust are key to success
Good morning - Phiona from Ontario jumping in late
Textbook "truths" can be a matter of perspective. Especially Social Studies. I see what you're saying.
A3 solid infrastructure, professional development, open communication and support for Ts, Ps, and Ss. Long-term pln for $/ outcomes
This.👇🏽 For all adult complaints about compliance, we seem to rather do the same to our kids. https://t.co/4JK6Q63T0n
A1) The system demands little from adults..easy to comply. Student learning demands a 180 shift. https://t.co/POpPwevWhP
Q1 Why do most schools work better for adults than the students and what must be done to change this?
That's a big part of it right there-they should be kept as separate as possible in edu.
A3 the same way you implement any other protocol. Build a culture for it and set guidelines for success. Teach digital citizenship
1/YouTube isn't only sacred--60% of all content consumed by 2020: video. I hate when education's 20 years behind
and my 4th grade students would still have recess!
A3) We must TRUST our kids with the devices!!! And teach our teachers how to effectively monitor through high student engagement
Yes. Iea of innovation 4an admin is scary because of the politics in education.
So have all of the senses involved and get actionable feedback on the experience?
A3: Makes for exciting globalised learning in a borderless classroom.Provide clear guidelines. Trs faciliatate rather than dominate
“: A2: Start by asking 2 simple questions. https://t.co/Bq2c1GDHWS ” This is great! Maybe state - if answered by students
problem with SAMR is that it is very vague and tech centric
I agree. All Ts want to be highly effective and sometimes this is the one thing holding them back.
A2g One thing to reflect on.. what problem did the way it is now try to solve? Was it? Change is a process. Honor progenitors.
You don't "make room" That is "giving" again! You expect they do that, because that is learning.
No doubt. And they allow other people to get to amazing places they otherwise couldn't reach.
yep. We need 2sshow&support tchrs in how to enhance learning through tech. We don't need 2b tech experts to utilise it
. a bit of assumption here... All kids participate in digital world and we (adults?) do not?? https://t.co/4ghvIHOEre
A2: we need to engage them by stepping out of our comfort zones and into their digital world.
A3. Ensuring success starts with modeling use that all agree makes sense in schools. If it is considered poor practice for (1/2)
not only do we have to have an innovators mindset we have to foster that in our kids, set them free.
job-embedded is the best kind of Professional Learning in my book.
A3: Have a well-articulated vision, help all stakeholders see the value of the tech, and scaffold the learning for Ts and Ss
I have not, but it seems easy enough to ask Ss to deliver information - they are the experts after all.
Agreed, must use backwards design to build assessments and plan activities around learning goals and skills.
Maybe we shouldn't implement devices as a policy, but rather have the Ss to create a policy to take ownership?
A3 Digital citizenship is needed to be taught - both for Students & some educators for lack of training & understanding by many
A3: Most Ss have a mobile device. In some cases, in trouble for using it. Why not put them to good use?
A3: Also, it allows us to spend almost all of our time doing/creating/connecting. Rather than taking snooze-worthy notes.
A3: Stay focused on the learning not the device - the integration of the device should occur naturally rather than be forced
a2 consider tech learning tools as augmenting learning not automating it "what tool do I need to accomplish what I need/want 2 do"
Technology need to enhance learning. It can't be the main thing. The main thing is still learning.
A3: success with mobile devices? Start with infrastructure and bandwidth
Question 3
https://t.co/UzCPCHTp4L
A3 - Real-time feedback, hands-on learning, gasification, more accessible/personal, learning can take place anytime/anywhere
A3 -I'll repeat, start with SAMR and move to TRUDACOT to use tech well with learners.
Adult learners use their handheld tech for learning & communicating on the go, & harnessing the back channel. Ss benefit, too.
Yessss! Then all of those rooms could be used as little studios for students to pursue passion projects.
A2. It is all about the learning! Tech, PBL, etc. are all formats to connect/enhance learning.
and have consistent consequences for inappropriate use. Digital citizenship!
learners to talk F2F while staring at a screen, then Ts must follow this guideline too. :) (2/2)
A3 we need to not think of BYOD or 1:1, but 1: world, or 1: anytime learning is constant not time.
And sometimes they do well in art or need a theater or dance class, too.
Not necessarily sad-- all depends on use! This is true for many adults I know, too!
Sounds like control and compliance to me?
A3 Don't "implement " mobile devices but don't get in the way when their use is appropriate either
I find it challenging not to have my jaw drop to the floor when I am talking to someone who truly believes that. ;)
A3 Empowering Ss w/ tech= scaffolded process just like any other skill. Coach Ss towards independence/ give FB on evidence of learn
Have to lead/model that way as well. Learning is the focus. Teachers, admins, central office.
Signing off - I have to sign up for my superintendent test - have a great week prolific PLN
A3.1: Find ways to integrate and encourage responsible usage. Back channel discussion, creation of content, research, games, etc.
A3) Not allowing Ss to use their own devices is archaic!
“: problem with SAMR is that it is very vague and tech centric ” I wouldn't call it a problem - it's a starting pt
Agree. Just being on a computer does not transform learning. https://t.co/IDhIOrTv0e
A2 - Student success with relies on a strong foundation in instructional design
A3: Mobile devices let learning & reflection happen anywhere. We must provide appropriate opportunities to learn how to use them.
A3 industry is bringing more of mobility to daily life.. Edu can stay idle and need to have its share w effective plan & awareness
2/ It's bad. I go to YouTube, Twitter, Periscope/Instagram first--& I'm an professional. My kids are there
Tech is a great tool, but a poor master when it comes to learning and instruction
. When first person knowledge is a Skype call away, textbooks are obsolete.
a3-ensure successful by never letting it be about the device. It's just a tool to be purposefully used in service of learning
The arts engage diverse learners.
A3: this brings in the whole question of successful digital integration - we know how to buy the machines but what next?
Model appropriate use. So important.
School culture for adults must encourage discussion, sharing, and interdisciplinary opportunities to collaborate.
Have 2b willing to take the risk in order to be innovative. Usually frowned on.
tell Ss abt my experience growing up dyslexic, let's them know I not perfect and, that it's OK to difrent
This. should not a be method (or a "treat", or another subject), but a . https://t.co/mJFzOXHaWR
And we shouldn't have to call it or passion projects. Schools that have it "right" do this all the time.
That's the beauty of teaching K. Intro early, that's their norm.
A3 industry is bringing more of mobility to daily life.. Edu cant stay idle and need to have its share w effective plan & awareness
Think so. In my environment (health services) getting patient's narrative is a great place to start. Schools too?
Success depends on the Ts knowledge of the end goal and the planning phase. We know where we going, how do we get there?
"I bet they could" is not good for "our kids"I bet I will flip heads, but if not consequences are bad.
A3 Today's Ss grow up with digital devices almost from birth. You can not undo that history so we must use it to our advantage.
A3: Implement to expand learning opportunities. Ensure success through quality teaching of proper use and modeling.
we should be careful with that word rigor. Look up the definition. Rigor = pain.
A3: Why it is the Future-both teachers and techADmin on the same page, not what is good for one group
exactly! A culture of fear that expects Ss to misuse devices will produce Ss who do exactly that
In a BYOD school lunch pr, do you think students will bury themselves in their phones instead of talking w peers?
A1 AA2 Also grab and share w community - create your own vids to share what realities of vision could be
Which then means you don't get hired.
A3: Teachers should discuss with students the principles for mobile device use - student rather than teacher-led
isn't that a safe assumption? Why then are most Ss referred to as "digital natives"? Not say adults are not.
Hello ! Ash from Texas! I agree! Ss learn that learning can take place anywhere. https://t.co/jjBMqaeBCo
A3: Learning occurs everywhere. The computer lab is not sustainable. Kids have the largest databases in their pocket. Harness it!
How would you see schedules changing to connect more actively with these ideas?
we need managers but they need a check against authority. Currently imbalanced
I like that…starting point…or conversation starter
Modeling multiple apps was learned by seeing conference. Our 21st Century team is now leading, not me!
A3 Make sure the instructions driving the use of the tech not the other way around.
Agreed. If we want Ts to innovate-we need admin to innovate + Supers to innovate
A3:Using Mobile devices shows Ss they have resources to learn anywhere.Ts need support in learning how to use them.as a tool for ed
sometimes tech is used as the 21st century "pacifier" ... don't feel like teaching let's do this "Ed Game"
A3 the most imp thing is the culture...if Ts approach with fear & control, we see only problems. Open minds and guidance = success.
And frequent feedback too. How do they feel before during and after the experience?
A3: Ts must model how to be a responsible digital citizen.
a3-why use mobile? Bc you are a teacher-a facilitator of learning, not an inhibitor of it.
Some schools aim for "proficiency." We need to develop more "Innovators." The world needs critical thinkers https://t.co/wMc3O4Mimr
https://t.co/TtjnHsCP66
I hear ya. I find it compelling to consider the demographic patterns of those asking or working to keep it "traditional."
Will check it out! We've been spending some time with Advent Calendar in my classroom!
I'm told 1:100 by person who sees such things. "People don't think like you"lol
I teach middle schoolers. many of them do not know how it can be used for learning. Cool to work through it together.
It's not entirely the case that those who spend all their time in a classroom should drive decision-making. https://t.co/I8VGJl7qZO
A1b How to change it? Bring in someone who doesn't go to school everyday and ask them to observe for a few days then report out..+
They didn’t in our school and we implemented BYOD back in 2010
A2: Focus on student product & demonstration of knowledge. Technology should support thise goals, not drive them.
good point with outcomes. What sort of ways can we track that kind of data?
I understand. Are you in a rural school district? The wifi lock down seems to be worse in rural ed. https://t.co/XiiXyaBD3d
1/YouTube isn't only sacred--60% of all content consumed by 2020: video. I hate when education's 20 years behind
A3) Bring in the familiar! Start by clear communication & expectat's w/faculty. They will communicate w/Ss https://t.co/IKGv1lycLo
Q3 Why implement mobile devices in schools? How do you ensure success?
Feedback is essential for quality lessons. Let's you know where to drive the ship. Why guess where students are at?
A3 We need to teach students the basics of digital devices and social media before teaching them to fly
Mike, you'd really enjoy the Leadership Modules for our County Leaders.
it also then opens the door to concepts like TPACK, etc. We need ideas to move educators away from just "engagement"
My 1st graders love it too but when given the choice. It's blocks and legos.
Still a mindset of the factory model of learning.
A3-Why do adults use mobile devices? Anywhere, anytime learning…why would it be different for Ss? (+ try taking a pic w/ a desktop)
Have you led tangible change w/o leaving classroom? Share your story w me for a book on T leadership. DM me
BYOD. Nope. They already were bringing them. "BYOD" implies we were ahead of the children on this.
Those are your teachable moments to help students fine tune skills. Don't major in the minors. Easy fix!
A3: Oh Ss bring mobile devices but most schools won't let them turn it on. Gotta attack that
A4 personalization = ownership which leads to harmony in the building. With less distractions, students can learn easier
Model and use the social media they're using. The Noisy Room Down the Hall: Don't Talk to an Empty Room https://t.co/7gHhnOodz7
agreed. Dig citizenship shld sit beside schl culture, it's all abt being a good person, just different arenas,
A4) From furniture to bell times, we must consider what is best for our Ss allowing comfort and focus while we facilitate learning
Education is not solely about preparing young people for industry but helping them to become a well balanced individual in society
Proficiency isn’t the ceiling but the floor. but you are correct, we have some how flipped the house upside down.
What does leadership/support/pd look like when Ts teach without textbooks for the first time?
A3: Mobile devices are necessary because we should never rob Ss of amazing learning tools if we want them to be empowered to learn.
A3 Mobile devices are a great tool for inquiry-based learning, creating, authentic kinds of things.
A3) Why do we limit student access to relevant learning?
Q4 How does classroom and school design impact student learning? What factors should be considered?
One-way learning is not learning. https://t.co/EEN0kzEk80
A1: why not design schools where both the Ss and adults maximize their learning? We all learn differently, provide flexibility.
Ahh, that books need to be higher on my read list.
A3a I'm a fan of mobile. Only I think it's less about the tech and [much] more about the experience. Why do you use tech in life?
Also adding goal setting so S's know where they want/need to go.
Sometimes, not always. We have to realize communication ALWAYS changes. "They're always on phone" for us
A3: Mobile devices can be used so effectively for student self-assessment in PE, Art and Design
A3: If Google is more valuable to the student than the teacher, we have a problem. It's about engagement & critical thinking.
A3: mobile devices lead to mobile learning! Access 2 what you need to know + learning about digital citizenship & responsibility
I've come to lean more, more towards a dual-operating system as a move towards transformation
Most people do not know how to use devices for LEARNING. We must change that with ongoing expectations and experiences to learn.
We really need Ts to take risks so all if what you have described can happen. Right on!
A3: Model proper use and reinforce digital citizenship on a daily basis with Ss in 5th grade = success with personalized learning.
so true .. Every hour shd bring forward genius & passion of learning community & each lrnr including tchrs
A3: It's like teaching a superhero to use his/her powers for good. We must do the same with tech.
A3) Think about how much we, the adults, love our devices and what we accomplish with them.
A3: engage them by bringing part of their world into the classroom. big engagement there.
A2 you need to mimic a gaming framework in your projects. Collaborative challenges that S need succeed at before next challenge
why are you driving the ship?
A3: ensure success? Try your best but we all can't control the when/why usage, Ss and adults use them when shouldn't
A3 Our district is BYOD.It allows for additional devices in classrooms for student learning & engagement.
Yes! AND... Powerful PD for Ts, a device in S hands, and solid pedagogy. https://t.co/j4L82HuLeo
A2 - Authenticity, joy, creativity and design. Without them any digital transformation will not succeed
You can define it however you wish. The fact is that our students need to be challenged - even struggling learners.
For many Ss digital tech seems intuitive - many however, are only consumers of tech and need support
Always excited to see as top trending topic on Twitter. Using US Trends as my filter! Thanks PLN
The bots continue to learn. Be sure to report and block. Beware quoted tweets w/ added goo.gl links!
Good morning Scott from Texas along with Rocky and Bullwinkle plus a restless mind. Gr8 way to start weekend.
A3 Mobile labtop lab 4 composing, research, &other things. Cell phones not allowed. Ss do need to listen to each other sometimes!
Devices exponentially increase the paths of learning, exploring & connecting. For success nurture a thirst 4 learning & xploring
Why am I NOT a digital native? Grew up on Atari ... 1st computer Tandy Color CPU 3 ... not afraid of tech.
Thanks for the great topic, fellas! Have to go be to gymnastics practice! :)
because tech is ever changing. Initiatives should be about outcome/goal in learning.
A4: We need to give them access to tools & get out of their way. It is their time to shine.
A4 Many schools are still designed in a way that fits the factory model of learning & have tried adapting technology to fit.
"" shows up as trending topic in United States at rank 1.
A4 Why use mobile devices and then tie learners into unmoveable desks? Need Campfire, Cave and Wateringhole!
How did you encourage the collaborative elements of BYOD?
Amen. I got rid of mine years ago (saving $), only to cry bc my well-planned lessons get blocked (tears).
I agree. It needs to start early. Very young because Ss are using tech toys that engage w/ others online.
Ours too. A T used the survey for a review and scores improved considerably. Learning took place.
A3b How does tech enhance our [adult] lives? Why would it be different for children? Access gates success. Does everyone have tech?
We are finding parents don't really understand how our mobile devices support learning.
Mobile devices offer opportunities for real time feedback + allow for increased collaboration & any time access to information.
I really like that one. Is it sad I knew exactly what you were talking about?
Help teachers scaffold powerful technology integration w this matrix (includes video examples)! https://t.co/bMOqvUDm7p
A4: from an elementary perspective, look at the whole environment including the yard - how is creative play influencing learning?
Building those trusting and respectful relationships...key! Thanks for the reminder!
You saw just a taste in NJ when I was there…
good question! I think if the culture is one where Ss see the value in face 2 face social interaction, then not too much
We also have to make sure that inquiry doesn't become another buzzword. Even Dweck is frustrated by "mindset" use.
Ts can choose to learn about any one app for January Faculty meeting: Plickers, Kahoot, Nearpod, Verso, QR Codes, Flipped,
Right- our Ss live in a world of technology. Good or bad, it's the reality we live in. We can't fight this.
A4 - The structure of many classrooms and schools are not very stimulating for kids…or adults. How can we change this?
Question 4
https://t.co/TAnm9q5WRX
Q4 How does classroom and school design impact student learning? What factors should be considered?
It's not easy balancing Ss needs and my needs. I have to enjoy being in classroom as well.
Been exploring in the classroom, it has been a game-changer! Why did I wait? Check out video here: https://t.co/NlBHXJQ2cX
True. But we also need to put them down sometimes & listen to other people.
if they have always followed a text, do they know what they don't know?
A4. 1. Time. HS's start too early for our Ss. 2. Are classrooms designed for compliance or learning?
A4: Students maximize their learning when they feel safe, comfortable, engaged, and explore exciting things
Yes, we need to show a true narrative of all of the wonderful things happening in our schools.
A4: Room/School design can + or - impact learning (i.e. rows of desks v desk groups). One factor to consider: network availability.
A3 Great for S to use personal tech to create. They should understand tools/ devices will change but creating is most important
A4: If it's the wrong design, students will shut down on you. Be mindful of what works and what doesn't.
When we think of “design” consider not only buildings, but also the org structure. For example . . .
https://t.co/9td2zVw02X
Yes! They need to hear our stories. We need to take risks in our classrooms & discuss each step.
A4. A bad classroom design can mean constantly battling factors we don't need to be
A4: Love seeing more schools adopting flexible learning spaces to give more student choice/voice in how they learn.
VCs ahead ed behind. Copy!
A3. Important to help level the playing field for Ss. Different groups use digital devices for diff purposes outside of school.
Great real-life experience to share. We all need to expose ourselves as educators. Ss open up more
Good for you!! It has been the most rewarding job I've ever had :-)
so important to teach them about their digital footprint at an early age! Exposure to mobile devices does just that!
A4) Districts/Admin & Ts have an incredible opp to prove "We've seen the future & we're taking you w/us!" https://t.co/jtU2OxIIex
Q4 How does classroom and school design impact student learning? What factors should be considered?
A3: Ss need to know how to harness the power of being connected. On our Title I sch. providing them helps level playing field.
A4: Grade levels, schedules, etc…all impact learning…it puts a governor on Ss. How can we change that educational fixedness?
A4: We need to be more flexible... Flexible times, spaces, resources, mind sets
how it works in practice would dep on district. Some have done things like block scheduling and longer day/yr.
No. I pull kids at lunch ... vast majority opt for a ball over tech, talking F2F with friends over phones
A3: Qs why wouldn't you implement? BYOD compensates for lack of funds to prov Ss w/ digital integration&enables Ss ownership
Students use tech to talk to their friends. Let's show them how to talk and engage with the world https://t.co/trlhauVlvD
I agree. It needs to start early. Very young because Ss are using tech toys that engage w/ others online.
Many org structures keep tech in the business office when it must be in the instructional leadership area
https://t.co/9td2zVw02X
agreed. Tech as an add on to inquiry based learning, not as the only way to access learning opportunities.
A challenge is when we bump out these "special" processes, we stop thinking of them as always necessary.
Agree! It is door opening for Ss to use the multimodal aspect tech brings to demonstrate mastery of a concept!
A4: Re: Class/school design: Students should have more freedom to move around the classroom
A4: students need to be comfortable. This year I let my Ss sit where they like. They have desks but some prefer laying on rug!
excellent point! What r some examples of such modeled innovation?
I agree, but isn't that phrase only used to describe the younger generation? 1/2
I love the work taking place across ’s district in the area of learning space redesign
. me too Jim - Gonna borrow that Jena
Good point! I'm one of them!
Probably not. That's where leadership is important. Change must be inspired, not demanded.
A4: By letting the Ss design the space. We called it customer input in my previous career.
Or the calculator thing that hangs on the wall!! https://t.co/Nkjl87dSzD
I so agree- even the one where student puts it in the box as they enter a room. It's like the child enters a jail cell!
A3 Other organizations consider target audience in their design of business & goals. Why can't education?? Student voice & choice
A3c Keep it real. Context matters.
always hear this about not interacting with others, why being on a device different than reading a book?
Yes, yes, yes!!! Need 2move beyond our comfort zone, get engaged in the process. We all learn.
frustrating. That's what seems to happen with all new ideas in ed, isn't it?
True, but that's not the case. I'm still relevant to help sculpt the vision & teach great research/application.
A3: communication w Parents and be ready for culture change bumps. Gets smoother over time
A4 We just discussed this at “Extended learning spaces - the school building of the future”. https://t.co/SbHajHsF4y
A4.Structures in the classroom show whether it is collaborative or not.
Needs to be infused into PD like a whiteboard and marker so it will be a part of the pedagogy.
A4: I think it comes back to simple conv. about learning and reflection about interests for both Ts and Ss. Then apply to LP.
Many Ts still do not see it also - much learning needs to be done by all stakeholders https://t.co/1vAmh8c21v
We are finding parents don't really understand how our mobile devices support learning.
Kids can smell a fake from miles away. Let them know we are humans. It's all about relationships.
I find SAMR a helpful brainstorming tool w/Ts- visualizing a lesson 4 different ways seems to expand thinking
A4: Classroom design should allow for collaboration
But, if you don't hired because of that... 1/2
We absolutely grew up with all of that stuff. I do not know why the phrase focuses on them. 2/2
To create move effective student led lessons based on their level of understanding or confusion
Agreed, too many misunderstanding of distributed leadership exist though
Amen! But model of works well for tchrs exploring inquiry for 1st time.
A4: S learning should impact the school design(time & space) until that gets flipped, it will still be adult led
couldn't have said it better myself. Teaching students to understand tech as a tool, not only an activity
You really don't want to be in that environment, anyway.
Why bother fighting a losing battle rather join the other side & make the change from within.
Mobile devices = flexible learning environments. Flexible learning env = creativity/design = authenticity = joy
True and that is where lesson planning and instruction comes in to play! https://t.co/Ds49BG3SLO
True. But we also need to put them down sometimes & listen to other people.
A4.b) Background, resources, language..make a way make a way! There's a way for a willing participator https://t.co/jtU2OxIIex
Q4 How does classroom and school design impact student learning? What factors should be considered?
A4: School design & leadership impact the T's, which then impacts S's. Expectations & culture/climate should be considered first.
a4 fix schedules, rostering, credit hours, restructure authority, and idea of one adult per classroom
A4: Too often schools/classrooms buy items without a plan because everyone else is doing it!
we have to look at what we use the tech for - look for innovative programs - Mathletics etc
A4 - problem is...every kid needs something different. Some need to sit in front, some on side. Some shouldn't sit at all!
Right! Big issue for me last year in MA. I wanted to have a parent tech night.
I think we did a better job having the conversations with teachers. We need to focus on parents now.
A3: we have and see its power in our upper grades (5+) currently
A4: They both have to be student-centered and built around student need.
A4: Involve Ss in the process of classroom design. Ask them what they need to be successful and engaged!
Many people are still unsure of how to use digital devices for łearning.
Sometimes. I think it is part of our "Fix Education" slant. We're always looking for magic.
Trending Topics Now # # # # #
not me defining it. It's Websters. I just find it interesting that we chose THAT word.
Yes, create a digital culture & structure that provides security. It should stimulate and not suffocate
A4: create opportunities for Ss for them to learn their way. Traditional classrooms have Ss learn like adults have since 60's
A3. While most Ss may HAVE digital devices, their use of them is not always equitable in a learning context.
Exactly…’Who Own’s The Learning?’ https://t.co/YQZTk2t1z2
A3 Other organizations consider target audience in their design of business & goals. Why can't education?? Student voice & choice
A4) Classroom design can enhance learning, improve concentration, & encourage better behavior
great point! We certianly do not treat Ts like customers even though that is exactly what they are!
A3: Leverage what already exists in schools via BYOD and supplement as needed..to support deeper learning..they're only the tools.
Foster a climate in which we celebrate minds open to learning & willing to grow. Then bring these people together.
Yes, I think that's what we're going to do. And have our students lead it.
Ask Ss for their suggestions and then implement some of the changes - show them their voice matters https://t.co/pXZTW0YRVH
A4 - The structure of many classrooms and schools are not very stimulating for kids…or adults. How can we change this?
A4 Its a big deal. It sets the tone/climate of the learning environment. They need room to move around for collaboration/engagement.
love saying to a kid "take a pic of that & show your parent" or "post that!" - hard to do w/out mobile device handy
Agree. And think it is a great model. Philosophically I just wonder. . .
And we must know their needs to design learning that truly meets their needs.
will be back in January 2016. Start the new year, resolved to share your story. sign up here; https://t.co/mHZfRnGuHZ
Check out + -amazing things
A4: spaces need to reflect and be conducive to the type of work we are asking as to do. It's tough to collaborate in a study carrel
A4: classroom design dictated by where computer drops are, who really controls room design?
Unfortunately, in the high-stakes high-consequence landscape, people reel it in instead of taking risk.
yes! Ss deserve to be a part of the learning environment discussion!
A4) Traditional seating & seating charts do not work when we want collaboration, creation spaces, thinking areas; innovation
. the entire design of the school should be around maximized learning
A4: Lots of wasted space in school design. Would love to see school architects rethink what modern schools should look like.
.A4 design needs to provide opportunities for Ss and Ts to collaborate - physical as well as beyond brick and mortar
Starts with positive relationships! Opens doors to positive outcomes for all.
A4) Research has proven that classroom/school design has ramifications for S learning. They can't learn in a trash can.
A powerful pedagogy program to teach Ts to teach in a way they were never taught to teach.
A4 If it's "our" classroom, shouldn't students have some say in how it's designed for learning?
you have a point - it's hard to have focused conversations with Ps - when we do not nec. understand or agree either
A3: if we want to introduce effective programming we need to train teachers on these programs -not good enough just to offer them
A4: get rid of the classrooms and buildings for one.
How do you implement flexible seating in the elementary classroom mid year?
A4: with all of the information available, we need to shift to collaboration and problem solving. Less about just knowing things.
A4: Having spaces for students to collaborate, & xplore is important. Small classrooms full of single desks hinder learning
A4: Design of a scl impacts learning. Need choice. Ppl love to hang in coffee shops.Variety of seating to suit range of customers.
I work w/dults. Mobile devices have been around for ages. We know how to.. Same w/kids. They see us. I bet they know how.
A4. Design matters a lot. As does thinking like a designer. Love when involve Ss, Ts, and Ps in physical plant mod.
Me too! We need to teach Ss how to be resourceful! My Ts obviously taught me!
Q3: success comes fr supp Ts & admin truly embracing failing fwd to encourage risks & providing differentiated PD to meet Ts needs
i know quite a few...we often preach to the choir here
What are some effective strategies you have experienced?
Great idea!!! Our whole county just went 1:1 starting with elementary. By next year, all students will have devices.
Ts need to create & MODEL cultures of innovation in classrooms! Our global initiative! https://t.co/WYYyaNudck Pls share
True. I ask a lot, "Have you tried taking a pic of it w/ your phone?" Immediate recall 24/7
A4: Seems simplistic but, I don't know, we could ask them?
Role of technology is to support and/or enhance learning. Building initiatives and practices around tech will spell disaster
Tech is not a solution. It is only a tool that needs to be implemented correctly to be useful. TRAINING is vital.
A4: I'm an adult learner and struggle with typical chairs and tables for extended periods. Great to see more seating options.
A3) Shouldn't even be a question in 2015.
A4) Students using devices, one another... whatever they need, w. T as guide on the side.
Indeed! Why am I there? The Ss. Everything I do should be laser-like focused on meeting their needs. .
No purpose 🔜 discard. https://t.co/xu63PLxZIv
A4: Too often schools/classrooms buy items without a plan because everyone else is doing it!
Absolutely. But please know that I am using it with integrity. :)
A4: Our current classrooms and school designs are not set up for digital learning & digital teaching.
A4 The learning space has to be designed with collaboration in mind. A safe and warm place for Ss to express themselves.
A3 - I'm proud to say I'm completely opposed to Feels liberating to say that
When we've engaged it's usually been with ones who are completely against it. Hard to move forward in conversation.
Great ideas, comments & thoughts in
thnx - abt creating multiple learning pathways - uncommon learning - how do kids create their own paths 2
A3: Mobile devices allows Ss to seek info/support as needed. Success means making all of us accountable for learning outcomes.
Have input from stakeholders - Ss, Ts, Ps. They know what they need to make it work.
Of course school design has impact. But most schools can't afford to change physical form. Changes must be made else where.
Agreed! Upon retuning from a long field trip last week, S said, "Ahhh, classroom sweet classroom. I missed you."
If we teach kids anything about mobile technology it should be safety. Ancient mariner maps: Here there be dragons. Ditto
That is a great idea. Great way to include parents in the learning process. https://t.co/avCCUZDB1C
love saying to a kid "take a pic of that & show your parent" or "post that!" - hard to do w/out mobile device handy
much in the way schls & classrms are designed impedes lrng, just isn't natural !
I haven't heard of that but appreciate the opportunity to learn more about it. Thanks for sharing.
Good point! I wonder what such huge conceptual shifts would look like?
Classroom design is something I have always struggled with. Any suggestions or recommendations?
school is the only place where, when people aren't showing up, the people get blamed.
BYOD is not great solution to equity…it’s a great solution for personalization.
A4: A better understanding of distributed leadership will help with school organisational design https://t.co/v0voeCyoUM
A4: People design businesses and homes with a vibe, image & goal in mind. Less thought is put into school & classroom design.
I agree 100 percent and feel the same way. Just saying it's time to rethink the entire system.
With or 1:1, should use of devices be restricted during non-academic time - cafe/hallways
Agreed. Quality T planning, instruction, reflection still essential.
A great question. To begin we must give up some control and let kids forge their own https://t.co/XTNUjPLw6n
thnx - abt creating multiple learning pathways - uncommon learning - how do kids create their own paths 2
:) I'm sure you are. And it isn't my vision of inquiry or integrity that matters. It just has to work for students.
Yes & the WiFI has gotta work ; )
Yes. Students would learn better if they had more sleep. Have to finish early enough for sports practices, though..
Feedback, input & community. So important!
A4: one revolutionary idea - stop testing so much and focus on student learning
Why are you opposed to ? Just curious.
Q5 What is the significance of personalized learning? How can it be implemented for impact?
What's the point of taking the ACTs 😑...
.
Visit my school sometime (NH) & see how has transformed everything we do. AMAZING.
A4: Physical space is only one part of it... We can have the most creative layout/design but instruc practice must be S centered
We are at a critical point in education where we need to model how to use tech for GOOD! Example- https://t.co/WYYyaNudck
A4: How does you room look at the beginning of the year? https://t.co/xnd8D5YpHh
A4: By letting the Ss design the space. We called it customer input in my previous career.
Absolutely. It would make a difference. Lighting, seating, standing. Not all rms. should look alike. Different needs.
is great way to start moving away frm texts. Also easy global cnxs like
A4 I mostly want flexibility in seating. Often I want circles; sometimes I want individual work spaces or areas to collaborate.
A4a I see lots of classrooms during the I participate in. Not being a teacher I marvel at then (my experience) & now..
A3 The classroom layout is the third teacher accessibility to resources space to collaborate ideas student flow all drive learning
Boom! Yep! Must transform to be transformational. Well said. https://t.co/97oM2bDwos
A1: Schools were designed to create workers not necessarily thinkers or learners. The focus is on compliance and conformity.
Classrooms of all ages need 2b inviting, engaging, open ended and hands on to fuel Ss empowerment 4 optimal learning to take place
Good morning! personally my heart always beyond comfort zone but mind stops me.
we say can change learning & not space lbut makes it harder 2 shift - change space & it makes changing learning easier
A4 S's need to be engaged. T's must think outside the box (within means, however) to create meaningful learning.
has anyone found innovative seating options that are resonably priced?
you just do it! Ask your students where or how they feel comfortable! https://t.co/BnTG3Xc8yW
How do you implement flexible seating in the elementary classroom mid year?
Observe winning customer srvce & engagement successful companies like & bring those elements in! https://t.co/rGKI2Ngvpc
A4 - The structure of many classrooms and schools are not very stimulating for kids…or adults. How can we change this?
. a4 design goes way beyond bricks - processes, procedures, org charts are all part of design of space
A4b Sure, look and feel matters. But the larger question is: Is everything the learner needs to learn in the room?
Physical barriers to flexibility must be overcome by expectations and trust.
is a great tool to share those moments with Parents, answers the "what you do today?" Question https://t.co/y533zyAfG1
love saying to a kid "take a pic of that & show your parent" or "post that!" - hard to do w/out mobile device handy
A5: personalized learning is so important - every learner is different - why do we teach them the same way?
.A4 design has to allow for cross grade interaction. Create culture that encourages sharing. Bring Ss voice into planning
Always include them. it's our home for 10 months! https://t.co/Q9ip46btds
A4 If it's "our" classroom, shouldn't students have some say in how it's designed for learning?
A4: A great question to ask with staff and students in a work session with the goal to create a new learning space
“: Why are you opposed to ? Just curious. ” Equity is my biggest reason. I don't remember the text book movement
yep! was saying abt using the uniqueness of ur local environment,
Using has really helped Ps seeing that.
Schools are often still about S's getting things done instead of learning/thinking
what's a seating chart ;-)
A4) Sadly, classroom/school design is facilitated by architects, code, permits, laws, and rules. It's universal and standard.
That's such a great concept. Play on Ss personality & have them emotionally invest in the learning.
maybe you can rearrange desk formations and slowly teach your Ss what flexible seating looks like/is.
Sure, many worry about the isolation created by tech. How did you create an envir to encourage collab?
agreed, but only having 140 characters means at times we need to generalize. not looking to insult anyone.
The design of the space has a significant impact on the type of learning that happens. We need to be intentional.
seems useful for S's to use their own devices to learn & problem solve. I'm curious about your thought as well.
A5: Personalized learning meets Ss where they are. Must be closely tied to differentiation, assessment, & instruction for impact.
Interested in working with fellow Ts to create units of study centered on student inquiry? Let us know: https://t.co/TuizCV5uvn
Believe me, I get the caution. We educators love to fetishize everything, don't we?
Of course as an English prof, I'll defend literature thru time....but do need education to be current too.
Would love to. We learn best when we are willing to expand our boundaries.
A2: Tech integration is important but only if Ts have support in implementation and time to share practices-all levels of practice
Include the "safety" piece in teaching them everything we have to offer. Give them roots so they can fly with their wings.
A5 each S learns differently. By personalizing their learning, we can understand the individual S needs to optimize their ed
A5 Student proficiency matters more than class averages. Meet Ss needs. Interventions and intensive classes that matter.
A4: Giving T's voice in their environment so they can embrace their vision is so important!
A5 - Personalization is a shift, moving from ‘WHAT’ to the ‘WHO’ to emphasize ownership of learning
A4c Very important factor: How do the parents feel about it? If it's too different from their experience there'll be friction.
I don't like these new spammers responding to answers with links.
A5 With personalised learning individuals should have the choice to tailor their learning to their needs. A learning partnership.
Lets hear from the students themselves. All the talk of "gonna do" is pointless until they DO. https://t.co/aQlHysfhOj
please explain within means?
We use peer reviews via cloud, and other formative assessment tools
A4: Would u rather learn at a Google headquarters or a traditional boring school?
yes. I use my classroom page to share the awesomeness in our room!
A5: personalized learning - why do we organize our learners by age? How is that useful if we are teaching individuals?
Just had a great convo w a bot, lol. But do we ever feel like bots in teaching? So, good lesson & reminder:)
Great idea! https://t.co/kilbDVo7mF
love saying to a kid "take a pic of that & show your parent" or "post that!" - hard to do w/out mobile device handy
Tech should enhance learning
Not a knock on literature at all. Totally knocking on textbooks. Darn 140 character limit!
I don't know this app - I bookmarked it to look at later
We must start by recognizing that there is a difference between personalized & individualized learning; only 1 is student driven!
A5: personalized learning is how our Ss learn when they are not in school. Needs to be focus of our Ts PD & share w/ parents
A4d Perception matters. Get everyone on the same page about learning space design, w/e it means for you.
I love sports-but are they more important than learning? We can rethink this.
Yes it makes it difficult for Trs to facilitate usage or to stimulate Ss interest
Awesome chat, but I need to get ready for this trip to .
For most parts tech is at best a support for prsnlztn, it comes frm deep teacher commitment & small class size to manage
. agree that S need f2f time, byod & using tech isnt exclusive, tech supports lrng & offers options for Ss,balance is key
Classroom design and setup should be considered prior to each instructional activity to support the learning goal of that lesson
That is really a local decision aligned to each specific BYOD/1:1 initiative. No real right or wrong answer IMO
Exactly! Threw mine out this year. Best thing I've ever done.
A5. Learning makes the most difference when we can personally relate to it. That's where learner driven experiences come in.
$ is always the tricky part. Have seen many Ts search resale shops, take donations, find grants for newer options.
you know what they say: follow your ❤️
we can make space changes DIY 4 far less or simply use what u have diff -space changes often reflect fixed or open network
I just tweeted a blog post you can read; involve your ss and colleagues - what do they want/need from a space?
A5) Personalized PD speaks to the issues close to my heart. Follow through, revisit, monitor, adapt. https://t.co/H2CHzFzsZo
Q5 What is the significance of personalized learning? How can it be implemented for impact?
Choice leads to voice. A5
- 's & 's work on learning spaces is key for school designers.
Prof Susan in IL joining for second half. Great discussion. Greetings to all!
A5: Creates a environment to reach all learners in their own way. Promote dialogue between T/S on what works.
if we focus on the WHO we need to focus on being innovative - how do we address the needs of the individual?
heard of a tchr sticking writing samples under the ss tables, so when they were laying on the floor they cld read them
Yep. But it's cultural, at least her in the US, regardless of profession.
A5) Learning transfers when we connect with the content.
A5 To personalize learning, we must do away with skills based learning and allow Ss to more choice and problem solving activities.
Thank you. I thought I was the only one.
A4 Don't only want individual learning. I do seminars, restorative justice circles, personal "check-in" Mixture high-tech& no-tech
A5 We learn best those things that matter to us on a personal level. That's when learning is meaningful. Everything else we forget.
A5: Personalized learning has to start with clear defined targets, options with time, space & paths to reach targets
A5: Personalized learning meets Ss where they are. Gives them chance to understand their own interests & control of their learning.
I'm guessing that sort of environment would be less dependent upon Ss as numbers, & more open to formative feedback?
It is a great way to get Ps involved in Ss learning. I think you will really like it. https://t.co/cb3Ll7RuD6
I don't know this app - I bookmarked it to look at later
I must say, there are some great side conversations going on. The questions guide, but it is your conversations that truly matter
A5: Creating a culture that understands and embraces DI is so impt so we make sure this doesn't happen.
first step to a safe classroom climate!
I think not. Think of how WE behave between meetings. Then teach professional behavior (on time, polite)
I myself am frightened re: the appropriation of , , , etc.
A5 - "But what about Honor Roll" - a real question being asked as we transitions to PLPs & Proficiencies
A5: Personalized learning has the potential to shake up the edu-status quo.
we have a few in our library and some kids will utilize them but sitting seems to be preferred
I like that word.."moving"
PD should always be moving https://t.co/XmAIjdLslv
A5 - Personalization is a shift, moving from ‘WHAT’ to the ‘WHO’ to emphasize ownership of learning
Everything begins with knowing each student as a unique individual.
And it can be done. With lots of work. And supportive PDL :)
A5: just giving Ss a choice is a start for personalized learning, see where it takes them
A4: Use what you've got to start! I de-centralized my classroom this year--Ss loved it. There was no front; space was used flexibly
a4 in beginning of year my Ss used to ask "you moved the desks again?" now they move them
funny isn't it, cos learning is the thing that needs to get done in schools :)
No, although I let Ss stand at their desks instead of sitting if they prefer. Is that similar?
what if they don't own a device?
a5. Personalized learning brings choice, choice brings buy-in, and buy-in brings engagement. If Ss are engaged, there's learning
. Phew, it's hard keeping up!
A5 Relevance is not convincing/telling students why it's important to them. Help them discover why it's important.
Not to convince u, but when they go into the working world will there be equity in the workplace?
I have been thinking about this too. Kids all develop differently, progression through school should be more fluid.
Good morn-Carol from Long Island on my way to fundraiser-raising funds 4children's education & sustainable living4Moms in Uganda
A5 accountability at the end makes a certain amt of common assessment needed. Personal experience to get there is the challenge.
A5: the only way to truly grow each child is through personalized learning
A5: Personalized learning is everything. Good Ts either connect content to what Ss love, or find ways to inspire Ss to love content
A4: Daily schedule should be learning. "Learning, recess, learning, lunch learning." Lang, Math, Science & History all intertwined
Question 5
https://t.co/HunlbokeJC
Q5 What is the significance of personalized learning? How can it be implemented for impact?
I see the spammers are hacking into once again. Or do we just have some really fit teachers out there? 🙊
I'm sure I will - when each stakeholder is invested and engaged in S learning - Ss achieve more
A5) Ss are truly at the center, learning is tailored to individual strengths, needs, & personal interests
Meets them where they are. Love it.
Personalized learning considers the fact that if we want professional development to occur, it must resonate on a personal level!
A5 Personalization can provide a refined focus by building on diverse student strengths/needs and fostering independence
Those traditional things that don't really matter in terms of student learning are the toughest to overcome as we shift!
Being clear about goals and purpose is where we need to begin.
Personalize the learning experience
identify need
interest
areas of improvement
A5: Personalization=standards-based grading+multi-age classrooms+proj based learning+T as facilitator
Change is possible when it's gradual & relatable. It demands that we show why it's relevant/necessary.
I enjoy sharing Dweck's piece in EdWeek about need to prevent watering down practice.
My Ss say I'm going to that! Ps love to see and comment on work.
Q5 Ss learn best in various ways. Ts have to make sure they personlize within lessons for Ss so they have opp to be successful.
one of the most damaging ideas that is hoist upon our children.
School devices can be used. I don't think BYOD can be the only option, just a choice.
A5 Personalization is no different than domain-specific acceleration. If a kid likes bugs, give him books about bugs.
You will love it. We use it to share learning with Ps. Integrates well with most apps.
Sage on stage move over 4 facilitators of learning.
You don't think employers provide workers with the tools needed to do their jobs?
Thanks! Burgess Consulting.
we talk caves, campfires & watering holes of learning in rooms, halls, libraries, fitness areas, virtual
A5: start with introducing choice when available. I have noticed more Ss trying it over time. Initially, some will not.
equity is also one of my concerns but I do believe in byod because prepare Ss for the world we live and work in.
A5: Personalization often T-driven and data-driven. Provide opps for Ss to take control of the own learning. True personalization.
I always wondered what would happen if we closed the school for the day & "had school" off site somewhere. https://t.co/o4rq9FiDKY
A4: Would u rather learn at a Google headquarters or a traditional boring school?
YES. I am convinced that is the key to our success. Support for healthy risk-taking, lrng.
A5: No other time in Ed have we had the potential to personalize student learning for every student as we have w/ digital learning.
Agree no good having a ‘Learner Voice’ set up if we as Ts don’t act on what they say
A5 PL is so important- student learns diff & we can customize so much easier now w/ digital classrooms ⬆️ success for each student
A4: Make sure we engage Ss in solving real problems and real world application of their learning!
Absolutely not. Devices are NOT just learning tools. They help Ss decompress and unwind and fight burnout. https://t.co/IxyvGHyiqo
With or 1:1, should use of devices be restricted during non-academic time - cafe/hallways
Reaching out to Ss through choice also promotes positive relationships. They know you care.
A5 I see such a diff when instruction responds to Ss interest, big ideas can be taught using a variety of texts/exper, flexibility!

A5: Ownership. K12 learners need guidance, and edus need time to make it happen. It's not a free-for-all, not exactly.
Good morning. Always appreciate how you push your learning to improve the learning of others. Hope all is well.
That's just good learning:)
A5 a digital badge is a form of acknowledgment of achievement. Without, the learner doesn't know how far they've come/have to go
A5: PL is more of a way of life, to me. We need to help others (of all ages) keep learning.
A5a Learners come to school w/different know-how & comfort levels. Think bell curve for 1 size fits all. Ok the rest miss out?
I think our society suffers from a need to always be the "first" to have the "best."
the mark of engaged Ss who want to collaborate daily-21st C style learning
so true - communication is going to be key
oh nice. I will have to check that out! been looking for a tool like that!
. see leaders that think they supp growth but don't encourage risks bc involves failure, how can Ts grow if they don't lrn
A5: VT allows for Personalizing via Proficiency Based Grad, but lots of challenges, like grading. Lots of potential here!
We need to be sure to clarify what is meant by personalized. Sometimes it means mindless curriculum delivery systems.
Well put! Ss deserve Ts who help Ss see the value of learning
good ? Fred / how do we create opportunities 4 personal paths not just "personalize" -
and with trending comes SPAM
Got it- we may have diff interpretations. In my head it's allowing students to use what they have + what we provide
.A5 choice, authentic tasks lead to personalized learning. Project based learning can facilitate this. PD in PBL, action research
maybe you could have assigned seating for half the day, and slowly increase free flow time gradually
A4) Learning spaces matter! Flexible seating, comfy spaces. It's amazing what a few cans of paint will do.
A5 Personalized shouldn't always mean individual. Ss need sense of collective wisdom; group cohesion; stimulating conversation
The reason I LOVE my class. We stopped talk, & got to work. My Ss will inspire you. Pls watch: https://t.co/c5FfUYrrCs
A5: Personalized Learning gives S's the freedom to move at their own pace & relieve stress from the one's who need more support.
Thanks and for a great this morning. Peace!
Yes! Ts need to be empowered to create this environment with tools and training.
Do Ts really wake up & say, "I am going to ban Ss devices, lecture straight from the textbook, ignore rapport, and give zero choice?
A4: Learning Space should encourage students to create, collaborate, contribute, design, reflect, & more! https://t.co/xag6GB2mo2
Agreed. Would love to explore that concept w/ students...!
A5 - Apply “Wise Action” ie step back so as to be able to step forward with greater clarity/accuracy concerning purpose/focus in PD
shifts in thinking are likely to engage learners within passion-filled spaces of learning A5
A5: some times you just have to see where things go when the Ss controls the learning process. May be a scary venture for some.

Q6 In what ways can we make learning more relevant for students both with and without technology?
when students get jobs they also get paid. We are charged, at least in VT, w/providing resources for our kids
Yes, I like to say we are striving to make learning personal, or personally meaningful.
Yes. Would be interesting to see if other countries see as much of this.
People have time generally to build a lesson, materials and share within one hour timeframe.

A6: Ask them! Get them involved in the process. Ask what they want to learn about and help guide them in setting course.
good point- too often from art to projects - kids are replicating not creating and inventing as individuals
What's the deal with ? Do you question me? Am I Kayako? Am I an actual community? Just what am I?
A5: as educators we beg for choice in our PD, yet we tend to avoid providing choice for our Ss.

You still provide guidance, but it becomes more focused, yet more open ended, because Ss pick portions to Ecole deeper.
I see Ss learning in their own time, bridging on what we have learned in the classroom, in a flipped way.
We need more opps to observe/discuss/create/reflect on student centered classrooms. They need to be the end all be all.
A5: Personalized Learning ensures Ss & Ts get resources, support, knowledge & understanding what, when, &how they need to grow!
