Hey everyone! Welcome to #espechat! My name is Jason and I am excited to moderate tonight! Please introduce yourself and let us all know who is joining the chat tonight! Where are you from and what do you teach?
Whenever I'm in the same conversation as @coachwalk, I'm happy. One of the best of the best. I can't believe how awesome this #physed community is! My students are the beneficiaries! #espechat
Remember we will follow the Q1-A1 format tonight and don't forget the #espechat hashtag. Also, any answers with GIFs or pics will receive bonus points!
Ross from Central MD. Teach K-5. First day of school...literally came home and took a 3 hour nap lol. Cooking now so I'll be in and out tonight #espechat
A1: I started using @MrHairPhysEd "How are you" It has been a fantastic addition that Ss are excited about. I am able to see the difference in the joy my classes bring to them on a daily basis. #espechat
A1 Plagnets-working, Take pic of assessment on sheet protectors-working, new warm-ups-working, Ss letting me know when they come back from the restroom-not working #espechat
A1. I am trying @MrHairPhysEd idea with the faces for the students to step on as they enter class this gives a quick check where they are. #physed#espechat
A1) Everything is new for me this year - this is my first year teaching PE. I am excited to implement some form of self-assessment for Ss. Not sure if it will be #plagnets or something else. #espechat
A1) I team teach and we implemented a different routine when our kids enter the gym from the locker room. Previously they did the traditional āgo to your roll call spotā, now they come in and walk and talk with each other until all have filtered in. Way Better!! #espechat
A1) Today (first day) was getting to know you activities across the board...most that I've done in the past. First "new" thing will be on 2nd lessons later this week, with an idea courtesy of our moderator this evening, @PerkettPE: https://t.co/6Tnbwjeqnd#espechat#physed
Thanks to @PerkettPE for his tip about using @ChatterPixIt! Iāve been looking for a way to bring my pets into my gym and this app/video is a great way to have my babies highlight our expectations for the year! Iām sure my Ss will be excited to see them! #physed#espechat
A1 not sure if itās working well yet since today was the first day of school, but Iām implementing the what, why, how format from @phys_educator for my learning targets and whiteboard layout this year #espechat
A1) I added the entry board so when students come in, the know exactly what the instant activity is for the day & I am able to answer/assist students upon arrival as well handle minor housekeeping things #espechat
A1 I have started class with a mindful moment! our 5th/6th grade comes straight to us from recess! so far so good! we use isochronic tones and a bunch of discovery bottles i've made
#espechat
A1 My district, @CVUSDNews is big on thinking maps so Iām giving them a go in #physed šš¼. So far Iāve used the flow maps for routines. Helps me be precise, Iād say itās been a positive. More new things to try, stay tuned #ESPEchat
I really want to create some opportunities for family fitness events at our school but Iām not quite sure where to begin! Iām thinking about starting small with an informal meet-up at our local running trail. Iād also love to someday do ābring your parents to peā. #espechat
A2: I really want to create some opportunities for family fitness events at our school but Iām not quite sure where to begin! Iām thinking about starting small with an informal meet-up at our local running trail. Iād also love to someday do ābring your parents to peā. #espechat
I want to hold a Super Saturday ninja warrior course for my kids who are differently abled- with medals and sensory tunnels and all sorts of cool stuff..need a grant for that though! #espechat
A2 would love to use Google Classroom to implement a semi-flipped classroom model with 4th/5th grade since I have very limited contact time with them, but concerned about student ability to access at home.. #espechat
A2) Family fitness night---and I thought the IDEA of the take home tubs---I think I thought about it too late in the summer to really set them up & still need to figure out the logistics since I teache 7 grades.. .#espechat
A2 Really want to try having tech based forms for teams to answer in a station rotation or towards the end of class, but super anxious about having laptops outside. They need to be bubble wrapped! Or perhaps itās time for our own #physed tablets #ESPEchat
I have the iPad on the stand w cones around it. Ss know they can't touch it. I have it set up and running before Ss get there. The first time takes lots of training. #espechat
A3) We added a door greeter in each class...SO AWESOME! However I feel that some rules and expectations need to be addressed still...it seems like there was no "Honeymoon Phase" this year. #espechat
A3: I feel like Iām doing a good job at taking time to build relationships and at creating a culture that is focused on relationships first. I totally still need guidance when it comes to working with Kinder-1st! Some days, those sweet kiddos got me like...#espechat
A3) Some expectations---some classes just get it and I can be a little more lenient ---others classes I'm like okay--back to the drawing boards! #espechat
A3 All new assessments are working. Ss letting me know they returned from the restroom is not working because they forget because they want to get back to the activity. A few Ss let me know. I might have to add the light idea I saw on here #espechat
A1) I've always "used" my projector, but now I am projecting every activity of every lesson up so kids can read and get a visual of the directions as well. Working very well- getting a lot less of the "what are we doing?" questions after 37 seconds. #ESPEchat
A3 As we begin our 2nd week of dressing our I would say the routines are working as well as conversations I have w ss before class, after class, during class and as I help them jog on a warm-up or jog/walk grid. Itās been great helping 7th graders gel into ms & #physed#ESPEchat
A3 kept a lot of the routines those are working, Practicing showing respect to peers and listening does not always work so well. Some classes have it some not so much. #espechat#PhysEd
A3b Whatās not working is our warm-up. Not that itās not working, I think it just needs improvement and by that I mean it needs some pizazz, some variation. Definitely something Iād like to work on this year #ESPEchat
A4: I tell them about me and my why and the why of my class. I also make sure that they know how important me saying the name correctly is to me. #espechat
A4 #espechat Get the students in and active right away. Give them the chance to play with as much equipment as you can. Show them they can handle the equipment and they will trust you.
A4) exit tickets that give each student a chance to tell me: 1) their fav pe activity theyāve ever done 2) name an {appropriate} song theyād like to hear during PE 3) anything they think I should know that could affect their success and enjoyment in PE #espechat
A4 I share my favorite things. If Ss like what I like they raise the roof & I allow them to ask me three questions. Oh this yr I had some funny questions. We also do activities that help Ss to get to know each other #espechat
A4 I share about myself including my "issues" i wear glasses when I read, I had a bad concussion so I mix up my colors, and my kids have 2 homes..then I invite the kiddos to share what they want me to know about them on post it notes- and remind them it's avail all year #espechat
A4) My Ss really enjoyed this today on our first day back. This activity set the tone of enjoyment in PE while lowering inhibitions and nervousness of our new Ss. https://t.co/NhWquH1sxe#espechat#physed
DAY 7:āBACK TO SCHOOL BLITZ!" Today's resource is a FREEBIE. My "Silly Willy Icebreaker Cards" are designed to lower students inhibitions by allowing for silliness, creativity,& fun! 32 different cards in all. SO to @AdventureEdGuy 4 the inspiration https://t.co/ceG5gYqUgD#physed
A4: Give Ss opportunity to voice what their expectations are for me as their #physed teacher and to voice expectations for how we should treat each other during class/what they want out of PE. #espechat
A4 First day of school is all housekeeping (more like first 2 weeks) so Iāll fast fwd to the first day of #physed šš¼. I went the empathy and growth mindset route this year, furthermore, a little class comp in who would have šÆ % turn in rate on their Handbook #ESPEchat
A4 Hi everyone, from University of West Florida! I share videos about physical education that capture the attention of students and inspire curiosity @ uwfphysed #espechat
Iām having my students fill in a bubble map with their ideas/knowledge on that exact topic during the first week. Below is the before photo...after to come next week hopefully. #espechat
Also Iād like to thank and give credit to @teacher2teacher for sending this beauty of example via email to all these subscribers. Apologies as I donāt have this particular teacherās handle to give them credit #ESPEchat
A3) Working: my student relationships. I love these students and thoroughly enjoy the kids I see each day. Needs work: I need to be more efficient with lessons in terms of less time spent on instruction and more time spent with kids active. #ESPEchat
A5 distric has a pacing guide so we all teach the same thing at the same time..BUT I don't bring out the equipment until we have finished "PE 101" which includes hopes and dreams, expectations, our book to focus our year on and our inspirational video and safe moving #espechat
A5) Gymnastics. Weather is one reason (mainly an indoor/winter activity for us) in addition to the fact that I think expectations of safety need to be known and understood for a while before introducing a higher risk unit such as this #espechat
A1: Using a projector to display countdown clocks, score keepers, videos to demonstrate movements. Other than technological issues that randomly arise, the kids seem to like it. #espechat
A5 We had to wait until this week to have the Ss do our attendance taking procedures. We had to get our rosters in Powerschool. Then we had to get the Ss #s and this week they are finally doing the procedure. This was a 3 week process #espechat
A5: I guess I don't purposely wait to teach anything specific, but I do like teaching more team oriented activities later so I can get my students to have a solid foundation of sportsmanship/teamwork down #espechat
A5) weather and which gym we are in drive when we teach what! 3 grade levels split time between two gyms and a fallout shelter (and outside). #espechat
A5 I wait til Dec to introduce dribbling w/ finger pads-so many themes I can relate to (many S's start their Rec b-ball then). + of course, I revisit dribbling throwing catching dodging chasing fleeing & invasion tactics in Mar 4 "MARCH MADNESS" @ PerkettPE @uwfphysed#ESPEchat
A4) I don't do any 'rules and procedure' stuff the first day. Save it all for Day 2- I bring highly active and engaging stuff to Day 1 so S's walk out a little sweaty and remembering how much fun they have in PE! #ESPEchat
A5 Putting my rosters into applications such as Plickers due to our constant schedule changes the first 3 weeks of school. Additionally, units such as track & field that involve discus/shot put throwing as we need safety down to a ātā along with foreshadowing w some ss #ESPEchat
A5 I wait to use planets until a month into school. I have to teach playground rules, routines and start addressing fitness and hydration right away. #espechat
A6 we take "field trips" around the gym to the expectations that are posted on the wall- after talking about what it looks like and feels like we practice ie. Safe moving: so we play red light green light or something similar., personal space: human fidgit spinners #espechat
A6: I have them play Poison Pond where each class expectation in around the perimeter. Ss use spots to get their team across the pond to each cone. Helps w team building and expectations. #espechat
Q6) This year I wanted to have my major rules/expectations discussed or brought out by my dog Ford using @ChatterPixIt ... I didn't get around to it...so maybe next year! #espechat
Q6 I do a tour of the gym so kids know where they can go. I used to start with warmup games and used an artificial tree as an example student who would misbehave purposefully so we could talk about consequences. #espechat
A5b I donāt get to the planets cuz I feel like I have so much to cover there is so such a limit on time. I want them to get it when I do intro it. #espechat#PhysEd
Q3 #ESPEchat#espechat I introduced the Conflict Corner this year and it's working great. Kids are really open to it and has really helped control tattling behaviors.
A6 #espechat I use a cooperative activity to talk about time. The students start with x number of hoops representing time. Kids are activities. I take away hoops and we try to still fit the activities in. They realize we need the time for the activities
A5 Tumbling is an activity that waits until after students have a good safety foundation. Trust in each other, and better understanding of body management. #espechat
A6 Itās normally a lecture, this year I added questions where ss had the opportunity to earn plastic cover sheets for their PE Handbook. Havenāt done this yet but Iād like to do an expectation review using an adventure run #ESPEchat
2 purposes: I want the website to be something to share the P.E. activities with parents so they know what we're doing and with other P.E. teachers to help grow professional networks. #ESPEchat
A7: So our school uses the Responsive Classroom system. Last year I started using Focus Frames, basically spots around the gym Ss go for a quick breather. 1st visit-they choose when to re-visit class. 2nd visit-I get to choose. #espechat Needs tweaking due to frequent flyers tho
A7: no whole class system-we use take a breaks and PE think sheets (kids record name & date on a "ticket" & what the mistake was and what they will do differently the next time- after the ticket is completed they can return to class gives me instant data for standard 4 #espechat
A6) ours are pretty sit and get. But they also donāt take very long because theyāre 8th graders and they kind of get it by now. We mainly just need to cover locker room policies and a few procedures and expectations. We send a handout with them as well. #espechat
A7 I remove, quietly chat and have student reflect. Sometimes I have a student take a walk to a safe spot then return when ready and try again. #espechat

A7 Warning ā ļø, time-out with an individual task (ie walk perimeter until Iām available or their ready to talk), complete removal (depending on the situation admin interference), itās parent/guardian contact #ESPEchat
A7 really trying to put a focus on praising positives in front of the class this year (and beyond). Also looking at utilizing @phys_educator āwarning systemā steps in my classes as well. #espechat
A8: We also cover recess areas. Our fields are split into kicking/running/throwing to keep kids safe during recess. First week we play those games in those areas while working on teamwork as well. #espechat
A8) I think we are. We have school-wide rules that encompass classrooms, hallways, etc. Trying to keep all the Ss on the same page in terms of target behaviors #espechat
A8 Yes, we are responsible for covering an area of the school the first week (ie blacktop) in addition to our own. We are also responsible for covering a particular area once a week when we teach a Second Step lesson (character program) #ESPEchat
