Q1. How much reading do you do on your own? What helps you get started on a new book? What helps you keep reading when other distractions appear? What do the reflections on your own reading tell you about what we ought to do for students? #BookCampPD
A1: definitely joining chats and book clubs like #Ellchat_BkClub are encouraging my reading life.
Of course, relevance is what’s keeping me into the books I’m reading!!
#bookcamppd
A1: I am reading about one book/week and three books/week during breaks and summer. I read fiction, nonfiction, sf, fantasy, horror, YA, graphic novels, etc. I have many books at home and look for book recs on social media, in books and from people. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A1: the heaviest amount of reading that I do is summer break. I find the year so busy. The discovery of audiobooks has been great because I can listen while at the gym. We have to make time and with all kids have outside school I know they need time in it to read #bookcamppd
Q1. How much reading do you do on your own? What helps you get started on a new book? What helps you keep reading when other distractions appear? What do the reflections on your own reading tell you about what we ought to do for students? #BookCampPD
A1: This is my resolution for this year - to read 6 books in the next 6 months. I am making it a higher priority in my life now. This weekend, in addition to all the other things, I was actually able to finish book #1, Lightning Thief. #bookcamppd
Q1. How much reading do you do on your own? What helps you get started on a new book? What helps you keep reading when other distractions appear? What do the reflections on your own reading tell you about what we ought to do for students? #BookCampPD
A1: I do a lot of reading in my own! I love reading books in a series or for learning. I like to drink something warm or turn off the TV to read. I also like to lay down to read and I know lots of my students like to lay on the carpet or sit in a comfy chair to read! #BookCampPD
A1: I'm always reading. I read maybe 10 books at a time. I'm reading only ONE professional teacher book in 2019 though. "These 6 Things" by @davestuartjr. For me depth > breadth (at least in my own mind!) I start a lot of books and abandon them. #bookcampPD
A1: I do tons of reading on my own. For professional reasons, personal growth and pure pleasure. I usually choose from some sort of recommendation. I am intentional with my time reading . My reflections make me aware that my Ss need choice . #BookCampPD
A1: I choose books by mood. Sometimes I look for a challenging read or I may want something easy; sometimes I want to learn related to interest or career; sometimes I want a distraction. Reading at the same time of day and place helps, creating a pattern. #BookCampPD#literacy
A1: I am in a self-created book club with some close friends - we take turns picking a book (each month) ... I mostly read at night and on the weekends bc I am so busy during week days
We check in with one another almost daily thru messenger #BookCampPD
Q2. If we visited your school, went on a tour with you and others, what would the visible signs and artifacts say about what is most valued? #BookCampPD
A1a: I read daily but it isn’t always a book. I choose books based on my mood I’ve noticed, may be my curious brain wants to learn or I want to escape into fiction. To keep me focused comes from the book, if it doesn’t grab my attention other things will... #BookCampPD
Q1. How much reading do you do on your own? What helps you get started on a new book? What helps you keep reading when other distractions appear? What do the reflections on your own reading tell you about what we ought to do for students? #BookCampPD
A1. Read on avg. 30 min daily. Suggestions from others in #pln. Keep distractions in check by focusing the book. What works for me can work for Ss but requires modeling and differentiation #BookCampPD
A1: I try to have a book at all time in my purse/bedside table. I find that I get my book recommendations from friend on Twitter like @emilyfranESL I find that I choose to read more NF and this reminds me that my Ss might have their own preferences too & embrace that. #bookcampPD
Q1. How much reading do you do on your own? What helps you get started on a new book? What helps you keep reading when other distractions appear? What do the reflections on your own reading tell you about what we ought to do for students? #BookCampPD
A1 I try to read most of the books that go into the secondary classroom libraries, so I read constantly. Mostly YA which I love, interspersed with professional books & adult books for my book club.
#BookCampPD
Wow. Interesting. I often read a bunch at a time, but choosing one professional book for the whole year is an intriguing commitment; I love the idea of depth being more important than breadth; interesting to connect to student reading. #bookcamppd
A1: My husband and I turn off all tech at 6:30 pm and read. Every week, my students and I set WOOP goals and mine is usually to read every night. The students hold me accountable by asking what I read and for how long the previous night😃 #BookCampPD
A1b: if I apply this to my Ss I have to help them find what they are in the mood for, what interests them, and remind them that what they enjoyed this week may change in a month and that’s ok #BookCampPD
Q1. How much reading do you do on your own? What helps you get started on a new book? What helps you keep reading when other distractions appear? What do the reflections on your own reading tell you about what we ought to do for students? #BookCampPD
A2: I hope that visitors would see that our Ss and learning are valued. I hope they would see in the media center that inclusion, acceptance, and student voice are valued. #bookcamppd
A1: Students need lots of book options, a variety of levels and genres, need book recs, need to be immersed in books, and consistency with reading time. Talking with peers about books incites interest. Readers develop allegiances to authors and genres over time. #BookCampPD
Q2. If we visited your school, went on a tour with you and others, what would the visible signs and artifacts say about what is most valued? #BookCampPD
A1: As I reflect I need to be more mindful of giving my 3rd graders some silent reading time - I always looked forward to this time when I was in school
Especially since I have class full of readers this year - I need to support that #BookCampPD
Q1: I always have a bk w/me. I get in rdg time if I'm waiting for appt, or have time. Keep book w/me so it's always handy. I'm motivated by my #PLN, book studies, learning about new book recommendations. I also "reward" myself for completing bks by buying a new one! #bookcamppd
A2: At my classroom you would see the string of books that we have read a loud. Our school posted #BogerReads signs outside of all the classrooms to show our Ss that the teachers read too. #bookcampPD
A.1 I try to read at night, but usually I fall asleep:). I love to read series books and professional books. It's just according to my mood. #bookcamppd
I read in short bursts. Today, I was trapped in the house bc of the snow, so I finished my book, but I usually time my reading. My focus is really jumpy so I set a timer to keep me focused. I do the same in my classes. My kids read everyday for the first 5 mins. #bookcamppd
Q1. How much reading do you do on your own? What helps you get started on a new book? What helps you keep reading when other distractions appear? What do the reflections on your own reading tell you about what we ought to do for students? #BookCampPD
A2: There are posters throughout our school, created by our art dept, each with a teacher from a variety of departments, in a related setting and situation to a book, with a short passage from the text, which acted as book recs and showed the school valuing reading. #BookCampPD
A1a: I'm also trying to get in more reading time this year. Starting with audiobooks is helping w/this as well (although I still prefer to read along w/the audio). #bookcamppd
A1 Jumping in late. Elyse in Texas, Social Emotional T. I can’t get enough of PD books and picture books. I share on chats and with my students. #BookCampPD
It was always hard for me to get into professional books, but now that I'm reading them, I can't put them down! I do miss those books that didn't require any thinking while reading, lol. #Bookcamppd
A1: My husband and I turn off all tech at 6:30 pm and read. Every week, my students and I set WOOP goals and mine is usually to read every night. The students hold me accountable by asking what I read and for how long the previous night😃 #BookCampPD
A1. Usually read 2-3 at a time - a YA lit, a prof book, and a NF. Whatever serves my mood that night. Usually read in bed, but also have a reading nook where I keep noise-canceling headphones or plug into Pandora for some sounds of the ocean.
#BookCampPD
A2: what’s most valued is creating a space for Ss to explore their interests and themselves. Most classrooms have a book nook, maker space, and calm corner #BookCampPD
Q2. If we visited your school, went on a tour with you and others, what would the visible signs and artifacts say about what is most valued? #BookCampPD
Q3. Do conversations in your classroom already reflect three aspects (BHH) of the reading experience? If not, which aspect needs attention? If yes, which aspect needs greater attention? #BookCampPD
- What do I wonder?
- What did I notice?
-What did I take to heart?
#BookCampPD
A2 You will see Ts and Ss immersed in the literacy process through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Book talks and clubs of varying genres, coaching after school sessions, writing center, new YA lit in library, Ts collaborating, to name a few. #BookCampPD
A2: In grade 9 English classes there are wish lists generated by students and teacher reading lists (past/now/next). Student analysis of work related to skills, analyzing texts, and anchor charts of key terms and vocab can also be found. And 100s of books by genre! #BookCampPD
A2: Our school is clean and looks new. There are feathers of character traits, student art, graduating class photos, clubs, sports teams, display cases, and awards on the walls. It shows that students are valued, honors achievement, and reflects values to strive for. #BookCampPD
A2: Our students are allowed to talk while walking in the hallways and most of the items hanging in the halls are student generated. There is a lot of voice and choice in assignments. We are always asking, can a student do this instead of us? #BookCampPD
A2: Visible signs would be Ss encouraged to work at their personal best, words that speak kindness. one would see motivational words of kindness, gratitude, and that all are welcome. Lots of books! #BookCampPD
I'm "reading" my first audiobook right now! I'm loving listening to @burgessdave read #tlap! I think it's super powerful when the author reads the book! #bookcamppd
In reply to

A new addition this year to have 100s of books in the grade nine classrooms, led by the current head of the department, with a lot of support by the school's principal to make the whole initiative possible. #bookcamppd
A3: I think the first two are hit on because they are concrete ideas and easy to discuss...but due to time constraints the last question is lost, sadly as to me it’s the most important...heART impact is so valuable #BookCampPD
Q3. Do conversations in your classroom already reflect three aspects (BHH) of the reading experience? If not, which aspect needs attention? If yes, which aspect needs greater attention? #BookCampPD
- What do I wonder?
- What did I notice?
-What did I take to heart?
#BookCampPD
A3: I love these questions! They go further than "did you like it" - I totally need attention to all three! Love the question about taking it to heart! Powerful. #bookcamppd
A3: #BookcampPD When we read aloud with accountable talk we do try to reflect on all aspects of BHH. The one that I need to be more mindful of is "What did I take to Heart!"
The novels we read are high interest, comprehensible novels written to increase their proficiency in the language. I use this as a tool to stimulate conversation. #bookcamppd
A3: Loved this part of #DisruptingThinking - BHH. We discuss a lot about what we notice and what we wonder. We need to spend more time discussing What I take to heart. #BookCampPD
A2b: Also lots of S work, art, photos on display, flexible learning spaces, engaged Ss, hearing S voices, lots of books, big reading emphasis, books in waiting places in hallway so Ss can read while waiting in line, etc. #bookcamppd
Q4. Instructional practices relate to your teaching whereas procedural practices relate to routines and rituals - such as use of textbooks. What best practices do you follow in your subject area? (See graphic). #BookCampPD
A3: Conversations, reading, and student writing do connect to book, head, and heart, but I wonder whether we focus on Disruptive Thinking’s interpretation of “book:” identifying what the book says (distinct from reader response). This helps to evaluate texts. #BookCampPD
A3: I LOVE the BHH approach!! It’s what I do when reading so why not helping my students see reading this way!!
Reading SHOULD changes us!!!
#bookcamppd
A3: Difference between “head” and “heart” by Beers & Probst intrigue me. Head includes connections to text, world, and self (in our English curriculum expectations). It seems book and head are in dialogue; the reader’s view may shift as a result of this dialogue. #BookCampPD
A4: I give choice and encourage an increase in volume. Ss are allowed to check out any book in the media center and they set goals for themselves each quarter with no consequences or T-driven rewards for reaching goals. Circulation is up 400% from last year. #bookcamppd
A4 We don't use textbooks at all. We read novels, short stories & have lots of class discussions. Spiderweb discussions have put Ss in the lead & I've found that they tend to go deeper than teacher-led discussions.
#bookcamppd
A3: Heart focuses on personal, emotional responses to text. These could be the focus of a discussion about the text. These relate to empathy and lead to enjoying reading. These could lead to students having intrinsic motivation which will drive and sustain reading. #BookCampPD
A3: BHH is alive and well after reading Disrupting Thinking. We hold Book Talks every day after our 15 minutes of read to self and students must share the title of the book and either a book, head, or heart reflection. #BookCampPD
A4: I give choice and encourage an increase in volume. Ss are allowed to check out any book in the media center and they set goals for themselves each quarter with no consequences or T-driven rewards for reaching goals. Circulation is up 400% from last year. #bookcamppd
Absolutely. I get distracted and need to reread, especially if it is an important part of a book. Sometimes I make the decision not to go back and reread after I recognize that I may have been daydreaming or thinking of something else. #bookcamppd

I got rid of the basal readers in two schools but the next principal called the central office and put them back in place. SUch a deal! :-( #BookCampPD
A4: in the art room I do a lot of model thinking, encourage classroom dialogue. I do have a book nook w/assortment of art books but also fictional picture books so the kiddos have choice when they are finished with an art project or we use them as a resource for ideas #BookCampPD
Q4. Instructional practices relate to your teaching whereas procedural practices relate to routines and rituals - such as use of textbooks. What best practices do you follow in your subject area? (See graphic). #BookCampPD
This breaks my heart. I think our most important goal is to create a love of reading. But no one ever cosied up in bed with a big fat text book!
#BookCampPD
Amazing to have a book nook in the art room! So important for students to see that reading is valued everywhere and by everyone in the school. #BookCampPD

A4: we read aloud so much and it is one of our favorite parts of the day! I love using our library to help with volume and choice because books are expensive! Also big thanks to @DonorsChoose and @FirstBook ! #bookcamppd
A3: Routines/rituals establish the value of books and reading, and help to eliminate fake reading. Book talks, reading, conferences, writing, discussion, and sharing immerse Ss in text where a vocab for discourse and analysis naturally grows and deepens over time. #BookCampPD
A4. Our practices have ebbed-and-flowed based on materials we've been handed and the direction that's been set & practices admins have wanted to see. We've regrettably left practices I did 10 years ago - inde choice, 1:1 confs, mini-lessons on reading strats. #BookCampPD
A3 Exploring wht Ss take to heart is a great place to start bc making connections creates safe thinking space for them to start questioning what they think they know and then Ts can scaffold their questioning to guide Ss into noticing new things- higher level thinking #BookCampPD
A4: Lots discussion, love hearing Ss voice/their take on my SEL lessons. Listen to what they like/want & incorporate into future lessons. My Ss LOVE to make things so I can infuse lots of SEL skills through reading, doing, making, sharing, listening, turn taking... #BookCamppd
A4: I promote student choice, read aloud , teach strategies and model thinking. I need to increase volume and encourage more classroom talk. #BookCampPD

Thank you!
A4: Co-construct an arsenal of reading strategies and analytical tools (including writing moves), increasing complexity and specificity over time. Use thinkalouds and teacher modelling of everything expected of Ss. Students absorb and respond to what surrounds them. #BookCampPD
A4: In English (and all learning) process is as important as the product. Provide actionable feedback BEFORE the due date. All work remains in play. Allow multiple opportunities. Give, specific, targeted instruction. Embrace the messiness of learning. #bookcamppd
