been a while for me, too - trying to balance some life things and have had to take a bit of a break. Sure as heck wasn't going 2 miss this tho! #NOVAedchat

Q1: When young people feel that they are valued by their teachers and classmates, they feel a sense of belonging. Including their realities into teaching and learning facilitates belonging #novaedchat#hiphoded#edchat#emotionsmatter
A1: What creates a strong sense of belonging is listening. When we listen to other people's stories we begin to really understand who they are, their needs, their fears, etc. Listening brings compassion and fosters community #NoVaEdChat
A1 - Feeling an unconditional acceptance for who you are and valued for your contribution to the community. Personal connection to other members of the group.

So excited to have opportunity for this chat. Create a sense of belonging by being open to & honoring someone else's perspective even when it is different than my own. #NoVAedchat
A1: Intentionally building relationships and finding ways to connect to people with different perspectives and backgrounds creates a culture of acceptance and belonging for all stakeholders. #NoVaEdChat
A1 Since it's been so long since I've participated in #novaedchat this is the perfect Q to start out with. I feel a sense of belonging because of familiarity, friendliness, & the moderators are my family! @RashidaJGreen
A1: I believe that feeling what you have to share is respected and appreciated. Those people aren't going to dismiss whatever you say and do what they want. #NoVaEdChat
I totally agree! Building relationships has to be intentional. This includes with our colleagues, students, parents, etc. Not only intentional but genuine. People know when you're just checking a box #NOVAedchat
I am here sending love from LA and an honorary @fcpsnews member--or at least I feel like I am. #novaedchat My day job is working at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence @YaleEmotion
A1: Building relationships is key. But not just surface level relationships where your kids like you. Really getting to know them, understand them, and care deeply about their well being and future. #NoVAedchat
A1: Making your Ss feel that they are unique and valuable in your classroom. When Ss know that you genuinely care about them, they are willing to do almost anything for you. #NoVaEdChat
A1: When young people feel that they are valued by their teachers and classmates, they feel a sense of belonging. Including their realities into teaching and learning facilitates belonging #novaedchat#hiphoded#edchat#emotionsmatter
Yes, listening allows us to hear another person's story, and stories can connect us and show us how much we have in common across differences #novaedchat#EduColor
A1: What creates a strong sense of belonging is listening. When we listen to other people's stories we begin to really understand who they are, their needs, their fears, etc. Listening brings compassion and fosters community #NoVaEdChat
I agree Alecia! ...heard and respected because sometimes we can be heard, but if someone is not really listening then what we're saying might not be respected, right? #novaedchat
A1: a sense of belonging is developed not just through relationships but through feeling as though your contribution and presence is valued. Same need this as much as Ts and Ps. #novaedchat
Q2: A lack of reflection on our biases and power and privilege can get in the way of ensuring connectedness and belonging --and academic achievement among students. We can enact violence in our ignorance of our power and abuse of it #novaedchat
A1 Relationships are the cornerstone - without them serving as the foundation learning is never at its greatest and 100% success never achieved #NoVAedchat
A1: a sense of belonging is developed not just through relationships but through feeling as though your contribution and presence is valued. Ss need this as much as Ts and Ps. #novaedchat
So excited to have opportunity for this chat. Create a sense of belonging by being open to & honoring someone else's perspective even when it is different than my own. #NoVAedchat
I also agree too about really listening and respecting but also acting on the ideas expressed. Ss & Ts need to see changes made based on their input & feedback. #novaedchat
A1 Ss feel like they belong when they can make mistakes in a safe environment, share their thinking, have opportunities to tell their story and make personal connections to all aspects of their school experience! #NoVaEdChat
Perspective is everything. When you are able to step out of your own bubble, you begin to see things in a new light. You begin to question your own perspective. You GROW! #NoVAedchat
A1 Making an effort to learn about the people around you. Share stories, ideas, etc. so we see each other as human. Extend a welcome to all community members #NoVaedchat
A1: Community creates a strong sense of belonging! Students need to know they are heard, welcome, and accepted. I love attending students' games/recitals to make them feel more special! #NoVAedchat
I 100% agree! I can't respect our differences if I don't know your story. I learn your story by being a good listener ...and caring to listen #NOVAedchat
And this includes our students! I had a sign in my classroom that said: Ms. Simmons LOVES you. And, in my class, love guided us. #novaedchat#emotionsmatter
A1 Sense of belonging comes from intentional efforts to both know and value someone. In the classroom, the school and the district levels. The culture is contagious. #NoVAEdChat
I think we do it to try to show that we have had similar experiences and are sympathetic/empathetic. But we end up taking over. Definitely something I do. #novaedchat

A1: an environment that celebrates differences and promotes individuality at the same time! We’re all pieces of the puzzle that fit together to form the greatness of our class! #NoVaEdChat
A1: As quoted by @BreneBrown, “...true belonging is not something we negotiate or accomplish with others; it's a daily practice that demands integrity and authenticity. It's a personal commitment that we carry in our hearts."#NoVAedchat
as educators, it is our responsibility to create a safe community where all students have a place. We can do that through activities that allow for Ss to share their stories and for Ts to share their own too w Ss and w each other. Our Ss also want to know about us. #novaedchat
A1: As quoted by @BreneBrown, “...true belonging is not something we negotiate or accomplish with others; it's a daily practice that demands integrity and authenticity. It's a personal commitment that we carry in our hearts."#NoVAedchat
Hello world!! ME TOO! haha! ...but being able to say that we are guilty is 1/2 the battle. When we notice it, we can begin to self-correct :) #NoVaEdChat#growthmindset

A2: Assumptions and stereotypes get in the way of expecting success for every student. Unconscious bias can be a stumbling block for students. We must be mindful and reflective of our decisions and continue to question our assumptions. #NoVaEdChat
A2: It is hard to have high expectations when we have preconceived notions in mind, stereotypes, fixed mindsets, etc. I always think, "Do I have an open mind? Am I exploring all possibilities? What is the unintended consequence of this action?" #NoVaEdChat
A2 - Biases, generalizations, and assumptions prevent teachers from having high expectations for their students. Not understanding what might be preventing success can keep teachers from offering appropriate academic opportunity to all students.
#NoVAedchat
And sometimes, when getting to know the immigrant families in your community, you need strong interpreters and/or bilingual parent liaisons to help you access their stories. Too often immigrant families are essentially ignored because of language barriers. #novaedchat
A2 Straight up fear - of the unknown, of "more" work, of failing. If we do not at least make the attempt, then we will always fail our Ss and ourselves #NoVaedchat
A2: A lack of reflection on our biases and power and privilege can get in the way of ensuring connectedness and belonging --and academic achievement among students. We can enact violence in our ignorance of our power and abuse of it #novaedchat
A2 For Ss I see the biggest hurdle is being unplugged from the real world because they are too plugged in their digital world. Learning how to navigate your personal physical IRL world and your digital world while going through adolescents is a challenge. #novaedchat
they for sure love to hear about how my 4yo had to go to the ER bc he stuck a berry up his nose or how he got in trouble for pulling his pants down on the playground smdh #NoVAedchat
...and questioning our own perspectives is so much easier said than done. I think that many of us genuinely want to do this and sometimes it is not executing. We have to always (every day in every way) think outside of ourselves #NoVaEdChat
Beth - Today i witnessed our librarian reading a book about someone having to leave their country to come to the US. Two 3rd Gr Ss connected to the story and ended up crying empathizing with the character and their own experiences leaving fam. In another country. #NoVaEdChat
A2: Not understanding that cognitive rigor applies to all students, not just some. We need to believe it, and live it out loud, each and every day. #NoVaEdChat
A2: Ts beliefs that "they are too low", or "they have too many issues" to be successful interfere with Ss achievement. Some Ts believe how can I get them to meet the standards when they have all these other things going on or are so low? #NoVaEdChat
A1 I'm wondering as teachers how we create space for everyone to be themselves instead of trimming kids down so they are more of a reflection of our own selves #NoVAEdChat
we def all are - I think I pay more attn to it now because I've gotten some coaching training thru great beginnings and we've talked about this a lot #NoVAedchat

A2 The implicit and sometimes unconscious biases that we may not even realize we have, which we can limit by developing the self awareness to catch these biases in our school, and actively overturn them #novaedchat
A2: Labels can definitely get it the way. When one labels a student then the student sees themself as that label which inhibits their learning. #NoVaEdChat
A2: Misconceptions can quickly be made. You also have to watch inadvertently setting low expectations for certain students based on a previous teachers experiences with a student. #NoVAedchat
Too true. Unfortunately, as a specialist I see this far too often. I try to reach students, when the classroom teachers have given up. Everyone has the ability to succeed in some way! #novaedchat
So True! I hate when I am working with staff members and hear "Oh they are too low to do PBL's." or "That would be nice to do, but my kids are missing so many basic skills that I can't possibly do that." #NoVAedchat
Totally. We get stuck in what we things have worked in the past when we fail to reflect how times and our students have changes. One size does not fit all #novaedchat
Q2 In higher ed, 1st gen college students often have no frame of reference or family stories that would help them succeed. We need to provide supports both visible & invisible so they can see the path to success and know their are folks who want them to succeed. #NoVAedchat
A2: Lack of PD for Ts to learn best practices, new content/resources, and #blendedlearning approaches gets in the way of opportunity and high expectations for all Ss #novaedchat
A2: Sometimes the lack of communication and/or relationships with families is what gets in the way of academic opportunities (particularly w/ immigrant families). If parents don't know about various opportunities, how can they support their student? #novaedchat
You are so right! Vulnerability shows your trust in the relationship. This can be very difficult for many people and very powerful at the same time. #NoVaEdChat
This is true for students taking their first honors/AP classes in HS too. @CHS_writer organized an awesome support system for them! #NoVAedchat@witchyrichy

A2: We very easily fall into single narratives about our students, especially our students of color. We have to push ourselves to see our students' fullness even when they try us. Here is an article where I share some action steps: https://t.co/Wg35sd209m#novaedchat
YESsss!! The Lake Braddock Librarian came to our school last year Sharing that presentation. Our librarian is ALWAYS reading books with characters or experiences that will connect to the Ss. #novaedchat
And making sure that we are doing outreach in LOTS of ways. Using a app like Remind might reach some parents but not all. Phone calls, ftf mtgs, even home visits may be needed. #NoVAedchat
A2: Appropriate assessments is 1. e.g. ELs take an assessment and then remediate because they didn't do well, when in reality they didn't do well because they couldnt access the language. They R denied access 2 instruction they need cuz they took the wrong assessment. #NoVAedchat
And the relationship I had with my teacher last year, might not be the relationship I build today. Kids respond differently to different people. #NoVaEdChat
Yes! & asking Ss to start the conversation instead of the adults starting it. There are always 7 Ss in the room that know something about what we are getting ready to say. Let's let them talk to each other for starters! Collaborate to discover! #novaedchat
A1: When young people feel that they are valued by their teachers and classmates, they feel a sense of belonging. Including their realities into teaching and learning facilitates belonging #novaedchat#hiphoded#edchat#emotionsmatter
I had a chat with a teacher who complained that everyone in her class loved Class Dojo except the parent whose kid was not doing well. Teacher blamed mother as she was not engaged enough. Hmmm...#NoVaEdChat
A2: Sometimes we focus so much on standards based assessment this can get in the way of opportunities for creative learning, and limits our expectations to what can be evaluated on a test. #NoVAedchat
Yes, Annie! I love it! ...not only of students, but teachers, colleagues, parents. Do we really take care of each other? When I leave my building every day this is my question. They are my family #NoVaEdChat
I had a chat with a teacher who complained that everyone in her class loved Class Dojo except the parent whose kid was not doing well. Teacher blamed mother as she was not engaged enough. Hmmm...#NoVaEdChat
A2: All of this. We can very easily become complicit in our students' oppression by making excuses for them and "dumbing" down the curricula. We do not do anyone favors like that. #novaedchat
and how dare we say they have no background knowledge??? What we're really saying is that their background knowledge doesn't matter as much as this background knowledge. channeling @cait_fiocchi here #novaedchat
A2: definite curriculum can gets in the way sometimes. I wish i could have the kiddos explore ANY topic and just teach PoG skills. They would have the tools to learn anything in life if they had those foundational #humanware skills #NoVaEdChat
A1: Hello! 👋🏼 I think students feel a sense of belonging when they see themselves and their work in the class... when there is evidence of their growth and learning #NoVAedchat
A3 - I think intentionally and actively collaborating with other Ts whom we emulate will keep us in a growth mindset when it comes to our purpose - student learning.
#NoVAedchat
A3: We can hold ourselves accountable by being transparent about our thinking and questioning the assumptions of others in the best interest of the students. #NoVAEdChat
A3: We have to be willing to think outside the box and not feel attached to our current ways of thinking. My mantra for this year is "Make Magic Happen" This takes being vulnerable. Are we really willing to be vulnerable and do what is best for kids v. ourselves? #NoVaEdChat
Oh, we also have single narratives about parents which create unnecessary distance with them. We have to have high expectations for everyone, and we need to assume all families want the best for their children #novaedchat
What did I do today that led to your success? What can I point to that guaranteed your access to learning? Did I work to open the mind of someone who is still working toward having a growth mindset? #NoVAedchat
A3 I think it's about recognizing where students are and where they are coming from at all times. Their stress might not be as stressful to you/us (as Ts) but to emphasize & connect can show them a lot of comfort. #NoVaEdChat
A3: Don't be afraid to reteach!!! If something didn't click for somebody the first time, reflect and decide--what needs to happen next for everything to click? #novaedchat
Yeah when I started they first looked at me like I was crazy, but it works most of the time because they will normally say "yes, but " then whatever they say I respond Yet again and then that opens it up to ok would you like to try it gives me an in to work with them. #NoVaEdChat
A3 Reflect, reflect, reflect. I am fortunate (?) to have an hour drive home from my grad class. I review the class, my individual contacts with Ss, overall engagement & sometimes will share that reflection w/Ss. #NoVaEdChat
A3 focusing on both summative and formative assessments, and keeping records not only on acaemic progress, but every type of growth you see in a student. Social and emotional growth is just as important as academic #novaedchat
So agree which is why I use this before every presentation I give because folks like to stay where they are comfortable but no one grows there.. #novaedchat
A2: A lack of reflection on our biases and power and privilege can get in the way of ensuring connectedness and belonging --and academic achievement among students. We can enact violence in our ignorance of our power and abuse of it #novaedchat
A2: no matter how much I try to avoid it, my own biases get in the way of expecting amazing work from certain students. It keeps me from holding them to high standards. Trying to work through that in myself #novaedchat
I agree. It has to be our actions, along with our words. They can, if we meet them where they are and bring them forward. They have the right to the same education as every other student in the room. #NoVaEdChat
So agree which is why I use this before every presentation I give because folks like to stay where they are comfortable but no one grows there.. #novaedchat
Oh, we also have single narratives about parents which create unnecessary distance with them. We have to have high expectations for everyone, and we need to assume all families want the best for their children #novaedchat
A3: Being willing to think outside the box and do things differently because doing it the way you have always done it isn’t the most effective anymore. Being open to learn from peers and try what they are doing in your own classroom. #NoVaEdChat
Oh, we also have single narratives about parents which create unnecessary distance with them. We have to have high expectations for everyone, and we need to assume all families want the best for their children #novaedchat
Oh, we also have single narratives about parents which create unnecessary distance with them. We have to have high expectations for everyone, and we need to assume all families want the best for their children #novaedchat
A3: We can have meaningful convos with individual Ss about their aspirations and goals. When my goals and your goals become our goals, we see any shortcoming as a challenge we take on together. This also replaces negative self-talk with positive talk together. #novaedchat
A 3: We have to seek new ideas and learn from others. We have so many talented teachers willing to share, you have to be open and willing to reflect on your own teaching and want to grow. #novaedchat
a3: One simple way to hold ourselves accountable is to ask: would I want this for the children in my family? If we do not have the same standards for our own family, why would we want less for other people's children? #novaedchat
Q3 I really care my Ss, not just as students but as people. I want them to love school and love learning. In K, they are just at the beginning of their education journey. Want to start them off strong #NoVAEdChat
Oh, we also have single narratives about parents which create unnecessary distance with them. We have to have high expectations for everyone, and we need to assume all families want the best for their children #novaedchat
A3: be purposeful in teaching the Ss #growthmindset skills. Taught this during our #hourofcode intro and at the end of two weeks asked students “what do you do when you get Stuck” . Several classes of students were asking me to spell the word #Persistence#NoVaEdChat
Absolutely. I think being accountable to the whole grade and not just your class is part of that. There's not a "low" class and a "high class." We're all members of the 5th g community #novaedchat
A3: I think this comes from relationship building. If you truly know the Ss or Ts then it allows you to always keep that growth mindset because you know where they are coming from. I always ask myself, "How would the younger me think of this lesson?" #NoVaEdChat
I think this is important to model/share with our students. self reflection and how we change because of it is important. Opportunities for Ss to practice that too #NoVAedchat@mexusmx
A3: Building relationships with other Ts and asking for feedback on evidence of our own mindset - we all have blindspots. Is that spinach in your teeth? #culturalproficiency#Novaedchat
A3: Knowing that with each new set of students, you’re going to have to adjust your classroom and tasks. When Ss change, we have to change. #novaedchat
A3: I think it comes from expecting exemplary work from each and every student, assessing often, and reteaching. Every student has the capacity to learn but T’s need to be willing to fail again and again in order to find out how to best meet kids’ needs. #NoVaEdChat
Being young and not having children, I often find myself asking my mom, or other parents in my life, for advice about my students. It's so helpful to have the viewpoint of a parent who's been there! #novaedchat
You have to make the conscious decision to be the person who sees the “wishes” not the “weeds” that’s our motto in class— it’s all about perspective people! See the wishes in life! #novaedchat
a3: I love how this is hold OURSELVES accountable. We put the growth mindset on Ss too much. We can't assume that our Ss didnt want to do well and don't want to improve. THEY DO! #NoVAedchat (1/2)
a3 cont: I think we need to turn it around on us and think about what we can do to make learning opportunities better to provide better access and increase engagement. #NoVAedchat (2/2)
I think that self reflection, asking for feedback & how we change because of it is important to model/share with our students. Opportunities for Ss to practice that too #NoVAedchat
What did I do today that led to your success? What can I point to that guaranteed your access to learning? Did I work to open the mind of someone who is still working toward having a growth mindset? #NoVAedchat
A3: I guess what I’m saying is.... growth mindset for our students starts with an adult in the room who has a growth mindset. If T’s are afraid of failing, there are guaranteed to be S’s in the room who will never unlock their full potential. #NoVaEdChat
A3: I think reflection is such a powerful tool. We should celebrate small and big gains for Ss. Take time to look at Ss work. "Critical Friends" is a wonderful protocol! We must encourage one another. #NoVaEdChat
Q3 Erasing, "they just don't get it" from our conversations and reframing that with: how might I refine my instruction, what else can I do? it's on us to TEACH!#NoVAEdChat
Hello! #NoVAedchat Michael in Fairfax County...already in winter break mode too and forgot it was Wednesday night! Better late than never right?? Good to see so much conversation to catch up on.
That reminds me of the quote @TechyMargaret shared with me about people not being mad at your, but having a hard time with change. (just tried looking for it but no succuss) #NoVAedchat
A3: we must also get into the habit of believing all young people want to learn. When our Ss misbehave, we fall into the trap of creating single narratives about them and believing that they do not want to learn, especially when we are triggered by them. #novaedchat
A3 Yes, and learn from Ss! They are amazing when we ask good open ended questions, right?! It works with our highest level and our unmotivated Ss. Honor their ideas. #NoVAEdChat
A 3: We have to seek new ideas and learn from others. We have so many talented teachers willing to share, you have to be open and willing to reflect on your own teaching and want to grow. #novaedchat
Hmm...I wonder how often do Ts use that phrase "Ss can't learn that concept" because they don't understand it themselves and so don't know how to teach it. #NoVAedchat
A4 Have I ever mentioned INQUIRY?? Encouraging Ss to collect data on whatever they want allows me to meet them wherever they are in their learning #novaedchat
A4:By planning outcomes w/high expectations & devising a path for students needing support to get there is one classroom practice for equitable outcomes.Always keeping your most challenged students in mind while planning for rigorous & engaging learning to take place. #NoVaEdChat
A4:Thinking through how we grade and assess students. Are students given opportunities to show growth (redo assignments) or only given one shot?Do we give feedback on essays & then allow students to revise? ...and do we really believe that ALL students are capable? #NoVaEdChat
I have read pretty much everything she has written. Very important voice for understanding the complexity of our world as well as our shared humanity. #novaedchat

Oh I dig this. Last year my team had a rule where instead of “my students can’t” we had to frame it as “my students are working on mastering...” even the change in words can really change the mindset over time. #NoVaEdChat
A4 It starts w getting our students out & involved in the communities learning first hand what it takes to build & connect within the community. That creates competent & developing learners. #NoVaEdChat
Q4. Build a classroom community. take time to know your students. build in time for academic conversations in a risk free environment. Reading , writing, math conferences allow for intentional, direct instruction tailored to what that student needs. #NoVAedchat
I'm so proud of the teachers are out school who have connected with Twitter this year! It is a great way to highlight what is happening in your class, but then to also connect with people outside of school like through this chat. #novaedchat

A4 - I really focus a lot on mistakes as a part of the learning process - my kids will chant "mistakes are valuable" all the time now. That helps them feel safer to try new things or admit when they need more support. #NoVAedchat
A4: Have students set goals. Create structured environments/routines like morning meeting #ResponsiveClassroom where you build community and everyone can show a level of competence and develop life skills in a safe environment. #NoVAedchat
A4: Self-assessment, voice and choice, opportunities to learn that support inquiry, and that encourage students to demonstrate mastery in a variety of ways. #NoVaEdChat
Making decisions about students before they walk in the door, based on past teachers opinions and past reports such as IEPs. We need to build relationships with our students and set the expectations high for all Ss, because they will rise to it. #NoVaEdChat
A4: don’t make assumptions about whether students can or can’t... meet them where they are and push them further than they think they could go #NoVAedchat
A4: I believe in allowing Ss to do the learning and I'm there to facilitate their understanding. Allow them to investigate and truly learn it. Give them just enough to get them thinking and allow them to go further. Scaffold where need it with Qu's. #NoVaEdChat
haha! Love it! Our answers should definitely be yes yes and yes :) #NoVaEdChat As administrators, how might we encourage this mindset in our teachers? #novaedchat
A4: some classroom practices include: celebrating each student on a given day. all my students and I would write compliments to the student of the day I selected, and each student got their own day when we recognized them with warm fuzzies (notes) #novaedchat .
A4: it starts by building classroom community. Ss need to feel safe expressing themselves in the target language. I hold all studentsto the same expectations, but provide supports for those who need help for reaching those goals. #NoVaEdChat
A4: Another practice of ensuring belonging was writing notes of encouragement to my students when I was giving feedback. Research shows the impact of this practice too. Let them know you believe in them--and their potential. They will meet our expectations. #novaedchat
and do we say things like "well they can't get full credit on a retake because they should have done better the first time?" or do we say "I don't care when they learn it as long as they do?" #novaedchat
I definitely see that, but that's where the support system comes in. I guess it's me, but if I don't know how to do something I am going to dive in figure it out and if I still don't understand i am going to find someone who does to help me. #NoVaEdChat
Here's where I love being in higher ed: I haven't given grades during the semester for a very long time. We do activities and create stuff, we give each other feedback, we revise together, and create our best work for that moment in time. #novaedchat
Respect, patience, & willingness to go the extra mile. I do a “line up” activity from @kjdoubet —Ss line up from novice to expert with academic topics & non academic topics. Point is we’re all experts at something, our job is to help each other grow this year #novaedchat
A4 it's so validating - and successful! - when Ss learn to give each other meaningful, appropriate feedback then revise before they are evaluated. Hey, let's call this....collaboration! 😀 #NoVaEdChat
A4: Establishing a growth mindset in your classroom will honor everyone where they are, and allow students to take pride in the next steps they take. #novaedchat
A4: Also, providing opportunities for students to share something they are good at with their classmates when they get to be a teacher for X amount of time during the day! THEY LOVE IT! #novaedchat
A4: this year I’ve been providing multiple ways to assess each unit. Usually at least one is a creative project with a lot of choice involved, usually to teach an authentic audience what they know. Not shockingly, S’s do waaay better on that than on traditional tests #novaedchat
I love this idea! As a music teacher who only sees her students once or twice a week, even though its tough to do I've been really trying to incorporate a practice like this!! #novaedchat
I LOVE this idea to implement with my grown up students. In a technology class there are a wide range of experiences but even the novice has something to share. #NoVaEdChat
A4: Another practice of ensuring belonging was writing notes of encouragement to my students when I was giving feedback. Research shows the impact of this practice too. Let them know you believe in them--and their potential. They will meet our expectations. #novaedchat

A4: also being their biggest cheerleader! Celebrate successes no matter how small! Even if it’s just remembering to bring a pencil! See the wishes not the weeds #novaedchat
A4: Discussing issues from our students' lives and communities and coming up with solutions also helps. It empowers our students, identifies them as assets, and lets them know they are part of the change they desire #novaedchat
A4: Honoring Ss work through publishing their work, working on authentic tasks that make a difference in their classrooms and communities, promoting critical literacy by connecting with action opportunities and #servicelearning#novaedchat
Whaat? we need to change our mindsets about assessments. We didn't become teachers to make sure kids do well on tests, we became teachers to help students LEARN #NoVAedchat
As a first year T last year, sometimes I was so busy trying to keep my head above water that it was so hard to even understand what I didn’t know. My mentor @teachforthem helped me in very big ways with that. #NoVaEdChat

I don’t have to give grades either... i am a tech Specialist and can teach and allow students to explore, fail, try again... succeed... explore areas of interest etc - fun, rewarding, engaging to Ss and ME. #NoVaEdChat

Q2. Thinking that a student is less able to produce because they speak another language or come from an economically disadvantaged home creates low expectations #NoVaEdChat
I agree Nina! We can be brave but if we don't have the words to say or say it in a way that is not well received - then it is like we never said it. Honestly, it could be worse than never saying it #NoVaEdChat
Every morning I greet Ss (on the PA) with, "Good morning, young scholars...". Sometimes it is a matter of having aspirations for them and showing you can see them in that way, #novaedchat
A5: By recognizing and celebrating our diverse population. Providing a platform for all stakeholders to have a voice in decision making. Considering the needs of stakeholders that may not have the loudest voice. #NoVaEdChat
By providing ways for learning to be accessible to ALL learners, and by helping teachers to do so. Also providing all students equitable opportunities to excel and succeed in learning.
#NoVAedchat
A5: Many ways! Even having books in classrooms that represent different cultures, holidays, etc. as a way to use books as windows and mirrors. On a larger scale we can continue the conversations with admin, Ts, Ss, and Ps. #NoVaEdChat
Can you give an example of this in action? Even though I really want to be having these conversations with my kids, I’m intimidated because I don’t have a background in their communities. How to empower S’s and not further the “white savior” model? #NoVaEdChat
A5 School districts can benefit best from the background of all their stakeholders by encouraging & creating opportunities for all students & their families to be involved. Most of the time it's a single vision that is heard & that squeaky wheel gets the oil. #novaedchat
A5: I think every organization needs to ask themselves: how am I perpetuating inequity. What are the policies and practices in place that do more harm than good? #novaedchat
I think about this every single time we recognize students who are On A Roll! Making positive progress!! Sometimes it needs to be recognized and celebrated publicly #NoVAedchat
Also allowing for conversations about other cultures, becuase they ARE interested! My students were learning a Hanukkah song, and only one girl in the class celebrates Hanukkah - she was so excited to tell them about the traditions, and they were thrilled to learn! #novaedchat
A5 great question & not sure I have an answer b/c things I thought about seemed too superficial. This needs to go beyond a monthly celebration or doing something fun for a holiday. Maybe revisiting the "canon" & making sure Ss are reading multicultural texts. #NoVaEdChat
A5 we need to make sure that every teacher in our district believes portrait of a graduate is not only attainable for all of our Ss but expected...and yes I said EVERY. I'm aspirational...#NoVAedchat
A5 Providing opportunities for all Ss to have a voice & choice in what they read, write & learn- taking the lead from them is sometimes the best way to go #NoVAedchat
A5: Create thoughtful classroom activities for students to research and discuss their culture. Use technology such as #flipgrid to take personal video clips. This could bridge a gap between home and school. #NoVAedchat

I feel like this is equity in action. Who cares if one kid gets it the first time and one gets it the second, third, fourth time... we give kids what they need to succeed #NoVaEdChat

and we need more teachers to understand what this means and what it looks like...more prof dev around how our pub ed system wasn't designed for students from diverse backgrounds #novaedchat
Q5 I just think how powerful it is to provide stakeholders authentic ways to tell their story. It is story- on some level or another- that connects us all and closes the divide if only a small bit #NoVAedchat
Sometimes attempts at this are too "surfacy." I recently wrote a blog called "10 Possible Alternatives to International Night" that some of you may be interested in. #novaedchathttps://t.co/KSd6eA5fAa
A5: I believe that truly listening to the Ts and Ss about things. Making them feel like they are respected and wanted. Practice what you preach and have a growth mindset at the top levels. #novaedchat
I agree!! I think that sometimes that is easier to do in places like Twitter and other PD type sessions. For me, it is harder to do at the lunch table or when I'm confronted with a situation that doesn't sit right with me. #iNeedCourage#NoVaEdChat
A3: collaboration that is actively seeking out strategies to promote the growth mindset with special emphasis on viewing growth as actual achievement. #novaedchat
I always tell my kids after a test, if you didn't know it now, it's not like I'm thinking "oh well...too bad...moving on." They always laugh at that but I want them to know how serious I am #novaedchat

Great idea at the classroom level...how do we scale this up to happen across a school division? Or does org set vision and let educators enact it in ways that make sense for them & their Ss? #NoVaEdChat
A5 Be conscious of the stories we ask Ts to tell. Allow for movement beyond the "standards approved" stories and give time for Ss to explore different perspectives #novaedchat
A5: By recognizing and celebrating our diverse population. Providing a platform for all stakeholders to have a voice in decision making. Considering the needs of stakeholders that may not have the loudest voice. #NoVaEdChat
I love that idea! Technology can be a great bridge between school and home ...and even further - between our school and other places in the world. @techwithlennon make that happen for us lol #NoVaEdChat
1/2 When I taught a unit on transforming marginality in the BX into empowerment, I read parts of Jonathan Kozol’s Amazing Grace to expose students to the unfair reality and injustices in the BX. We watched a documentary, which explored health injustices in the Bronx. #novaedchat
Yes! -access for those who don’t have the loudest voice is so important: considering: are we providing different modalities and platforms of communication to ensure all stakeholders have access to the conversations and decision making process? #NoVaEdChat
A5b: I think truly know each of the stakeholders and where they are coming from, what are they dealing with, etc. will help to make them feel like they are welcome and appreciated. #novaedchat
A5: Welcome and listen to the community - establish avenues to reach all families, not just those who are comfortable in an educational environment. #NOVAedchat
A5: FCPS can heed words of Ron Edmonds: "We can, whenever & wherever we wish, teach successfully all children whose education is of interest. Whether we do or do not do it depends in the final analysis on how we feel about the fact that we have not done so thus far.”#novaedchat
A5: Acknowledge, appreciate, and use the talents, strengths, insights, and perspectives of all employees. Increase culturally responsive practices throughout the county. This includes hiring and maintaining the most effective staff that reflects its clientele. #NoVAEdChat
A5: I have to wonder sometimes at attempts to do this. Are they to show that on paper we “support” diverse learners? Or is it actually we CARE about them as humans and want to close gaps + change harmful mindsets about diverse learners? #NoVaEdChat
2/2 we discussed ways to empower community members. As an authentic performance assessment at the end of the unit, students wrote blog posts, created mini-documentaries or PSA about a problem they have identified in their community along with suggested solutions. #novaedchat
A4: Using more inclusion/cotaught models integrating students of all abilities into the general education curriculum as opposed to tracking or exclusion. #novaedchat
A5 I just think how powerful it is to provide stakeholders authentic ways to tell their story. It is story- on some level or another- that connects us all and closes the divide if only a small bit #NoVAedchat
A5 we can look at the subgroups of our schools. Are the outcomes the same for all groups? Is one group predominantly represented in AAP? Is one group predominantly repped in special education? #novaedchat
My librarian and i are doing a PBL we wrote called What’s My Story? That does this! It has been really fun for us and for the students as we learn more about them through their Story. #novaedchat
A5: I think every organization needs to ask themselves: how am I perpetuating inequity. What are the policies and practices in place that do more harm than good? #novaedchat
A5: I think it would be awesome if we got to a place in FCPS where our staff was just as diverse as our student population is. I know this is a lofty goal, but I think it needs to happen. #novaedchat
a5: Help Ts see their unconscious biases & illuminate what we might be doing with good intentions but might actually be harmful to others' identities. Let's be brave and notice these in ourselves and speak out/advocate for change when we see the need. #NoVAedchat
A5 We are working to give Ss chances to share their stories. Anonymously on a site (https://t.co/RSbT0j8mRX) & hosting panels of Ss for T prof dev. Its been awesome. #NoVaedchat
A5: Having diversity in the workplace is huge. Research shows that Young Scholars can benefit from having a teacher or mentor who connect with similar background and life experiences @fcpsaap#NoVAedchat
A5: districts can show more understanding of the diverse cultures of their stakeholders by advocating for access to multilingual materials allowing ELL students more accessibility to the curriculum without undermining their ability in their first language. #NoVAedchat
Ooooh okay. Wow I love this, I have so much to think about over winter break 🎉 wondering how I can do this with primary S’s... so important to empower even the youngest S’s. Thanks Dena you are awesome! #NoVaEdChat
I would add that we must believe it's our responsibility to help our students practice and refine these skills - JUST AS MUCH as it is to help them master content #NoVAedchat
A6: Engaged, Empowered, Ready! Our county has started the conversations around equity and I'm excited about the work that is head for me as an admin. #NoVaEdChat
It all reminds me of @FCPSSupt address to leaders in the Fall. It is okay if we're not all CatA at everything. We have to acknowledge where the work needs to be done and be okay w/making progress v. perfection #NoVaEdChat ...in our students and in ourselves

Project based learning is key. I also did some units on community organizing with my students and we studied a cause in history and then found one we wanted to do in our community and wrote public officials and so on. #novaedchat
Y E S. Teaching second this year and I feel so much pressure when selecting kids for AAP. That is one way we make glaringly obvious who we think has the potential for the most academic succcess. And it starts SO YOUNG. #NoVaEdChat
Yes, I was just thinking about how no one had brought that up yet! So many schools in FCPS are nearly 100% students of color and nearly 100% white teachers. #IckyDynamic#novaedchat
