  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Q1: What are the skills students need to be successful math learners in all grade levels and how do you foster that in your current role? #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A1: Curiosity is key! The ability to ask questions and persevere in searching for answers. Learning to communicate ideas. #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Apr 19 @ 8:36 PM EDT
Hello! Alexa Fulmer-intermediate math teacher for Cincinnati Public. I’m thankful for my team! #octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Apr 19 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A1: number sense - the ability to break apart, put together, and notice patterns in group of numbers. Why do I see the number 64 frequently but I never seem to use 34 that much? #octmchat
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A1: Perseverance and a growth mindset! That is the culture we are trying to establish every day in our classrooms. #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Apr 19 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A1-Ss need to be able to model, label, interpret, explain, and defend their work at all levels. #octmchat
  • cmsmath Apr 19 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A1 Growth mindset, perseverance, the opportunity to think and reason #octmchat
  • reneelynnsnyder Apr 19 @ 8:39 PM EDT

  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Q2 is coming soon. We have 3 questions tonight with an end time of 9:00pm EST. #octmchat
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Q2: What are the assumptions that grade levels make about previous or future math instruction? #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Apr 19 @ 8:41 PM EDT
I love that so many of our answers focus on the Standards for Mathematical Practice! #octmchat
    In reply to @MathRocks73
  • reneelynnsnyder Apr 19 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1: taking risks, the power of a mistake, building conceptual understanding, recognizing and utilizing relationships and patterns #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Apr 19 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A2: That no one ever taught basic facts! #octmchat
  • brendaboring1 Apr 19 @ 8:43 PM EDT
Yes! Too often we don't give students a chance to think on their own and make sense of what the problem is about! A growth mindset is definitely a key factor for success. #octmchat
    In reply to @cmsmath
  • cmsmath Apr 19 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A2 "These kids don't know their facts" I hear this mantra in every building I visit, no matter what grade levels. #octmchat
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2: That math instruction has to look different just because it’s elementary or middle school. I’ve been a part of both. Kids need to discover, explore, and persevere at all levels. #octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Apr 19 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2: I don't prescribe to the idea of "I have to teach you this skill because you'll need it next year." That just means it's taught out of context. Teach skills though the lens of an application/anchor problem, not the other way around #octmchat
  • reneelynnsnyder Apr 19 @ 8:46 PM EDT
As concepts evolve and new connections are made, Ss may appear that they are using less sophisticated strategies, however they may be trying to make sense using relationship they may already know in order to understand and the power of building models!! #octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Apr 19 @ 8:46 PM EDT
Agreed - I would say many of those strategies can apply even into the early high school years #octmchat
    In reply to @SammyAlthouse
  • MathRocks73 Apr 19 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A2-I think sometimes Ts don’t think about the impact of what they are saying has on future grades. It is hard to undo a “trick” from earlier grades. #octmchat
  • brendaboring1 Apr 19 @ 8:46 PM EDT
This is so common in most grade levels! I have been guilty of saying this in the past as well! #octmchat
    In reply to @BaileyJodie
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:47 PM EDT
Q3 is coming up. Don’t forget to include #octmchat in each of your tweets.
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:47 PM EDT
Q3: Time constraints vary by grade level. What key components should all math instruction include regardless of grade level? #octmchat
  • brendaboring1 Apr 19 @ 8:48 PM EDT
Let them start with exploration and problem solving so that you can see where their gaps of knowledge fall. #octmchat
    In reply to @SammyAlthouse
  • cmsmath Apr 19 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A3 The opportunity to engage in low floor, high ceiling rich tasks that foster conversation and mathematical thinking.#octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Apr 19 @ 8:49 PM EDT
Agreed, boooo tricks, be a mathematician not a math-magician #octmchat

  • MathRocks73 Apr 19 @ 8:49 PM EDT
    A3-The Mathematical Practice Standards #octmchat
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A3: Noticing, wondering, and discovering of the concepts. Collaboration and time to share their thinking. Purposeful practice that includes self-assessment and the question “is my answer reasonable.” #octmchat
  • Leah440B Apr 19 @ 8:51 PM EDT
Leah from CLE just joining #octmchat now. A3: All grade levels PreK all the way through HS need to be able to experience math and have access to rich tasks
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:52 PM EDT
Love this! No more magicians in math! #octmchat
  • AnitaNorris18 Apr 19 @ 8:52 PM EDT
    #octmchat time to explore
    In reply to @SammyAlthouse
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Apr 19 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A3: Learner driven exploration, #notice, #wonder, Ss doing most of the talking, working to make sense of & refined mathematical understandings. #octmchat
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:54 PM EDT
Our chat is winding down, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop the conversation! Use #octmchat & continue sharing!
  • Leah440B Apr 19 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A3: I also think powerful discussions of student discoveries and work should be central to your instruction on a daily basis #octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Apr 19 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A3: individual face-time with students, as much as possible. As we all do, students thrive when given personal, individual attention #octmchat

Ss need time to explore and make sense of the math around them. They need to be able to make connections from previous grades as well as the content that they are learning within their grade level.Give them time to develop strategies and critique the reasoning of others. #octmchat
  • SammyAlthouse Apr 19 @ 8:57 PM EDT
Based on this chat I believe there is some great math instruction happening in OH!! #octmchat
