#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Hello! I am Suzanne, I am from Orillia Ontario! I did not catch the live footage but I did see countless pictures, videos, and posts afterwards! #kinderchat
#kinderchat Casey here, Thunder Bay, ON. First time joining in on this chat. Supply Teacher K-6. Lakehead Masters student (Hi Guys!). Yes, I got to watch the wedding when I was at work!
A1: False. It's easy to think that you need to stay strong, but sometimes that's difficult. You need self care in order to care for and teach your students #kinderchat
Hmm, true. Of course this is dependent on the situation. Mental and physical health of us teachers is important & we must take care of this. How are we supposed to tend to student needs if we do not tend to our own? #kinderchat
A1 I lean more toward false. If Ts don’t take care of themselves, it’s hard to help our Ss. We are role models, and it’s hard to help Ss when we show them we don’t take care of ourselves #kinderchat
A1: I think it depends. As teachers, one of the roles we take on is a caregiver. They are a big part of our lives, but we need to be able to judge the situation and see if it is reasonable... i.e. Do you have strep? Do you need time for your own self-care? #kinderchat
A1: False, you need to take care of yourself first. You will always want to take care of the students but in order to do that you need to make sure you are taking care of yourself! #kinderchat
A1 not easy to answer with true or false. Are we talking earthquakes, natural disasters or shootings? Are we talking about our own personal issues. I’ve faced earthquakes (minor) and a few heartbreaking personal realities. #kinderchat Responded to each differently
When my grandmother passed away during my first year it took me a while to put focus back on my students. Luckily I had a classroom assistant to help out but it was stressful for about a week. #Kinderchat
My mum died over Christmas break and it was so hard to explain why we didn't have a Merry Holiday . . . over and over. Thank goodness for wonderful colleagues. #kinderchat
False- The first time I joined #kinderchat it was a self-care night. It is important to take time to yourself whether that means an hour, a day or longer. A classroom cannot promote self-growth if the teacher is not focusing on their own. 🙂
A1: False. In any job, an individual needs to be mentally and physically healthy. Teaching is no exception. Teachers may be extremely invested in their students, but that doesn't mean they don't look after themselves. #kinderchat
A2: I'd call the office and ask for someone to come into our classroom so I could go for a walk, get a drink of water, and re-focus #myadmingotmyback#kinderchat
Talk to a colleague who you have a relationship with, or the principal.take time for yourself, make tea in the staff room, meditate... make time to ground yourself! #kinderchat
I go and sit in my car during the lunch break with the windows down and listen to music. Fresh air and tunes can cure a lot more than we think 🍃🎶 #kinderchat

In the article you supplied, one suggestion was taking a walk. This is a great thing to do during a break at school, but also bringing your kids with you! It can be a DPA or a chance to all relax before going back to class #kinderchat
A2 I talk to colleagues for support, or even try to visit with Ss that day. It’s how a conversation with a 5 yr old can help make things seem better #kinderchat
Q2: As a new supply teacher, I have had some stressful days where I felt like I was hitting my head against a wall. I used lunch and planning time to sit, take a minute to myself. Fresh air always helps me too. Count down the minutes until the end of the day? #kinderchat

A2: If this happens or we need a moment, we call our boss who will come relieve us for a mini break...people sometimes just need to recollect themselves and take a breather. Amazing support I have from both coworkers and our bosses in this area! #kinderchat

A2: Fresh air (open the windows, take a walk), meditate, talk to a colleague or depending on the situation if alone time is necessary have lunch alone in the classroom #kinderchat
Daily Physical Activity! Often used as a transition for students when they have been sitting for long, or when they appear restless! GoNoodle, Deskercise & Yoga are my go 2's! #kinderchat
It serves as a nice distraction, plus I love feeling that caring relationship goes both ways. We take care of them, but they also take care of us #kinderchat

A3: I have a stash of chocolate in my office drawer. Over the last 28 years, I may have had some years that demanded more frequent re-supply #kinderchat
A3: Emergency lessons/activities ready to go and easy to follow if a supply were needed to come in mid-day and I did not have a lot of time to explain things. #kinderchat
A3 We team teach so my teaching partner could take over. Also admin was very supportive (when my husband was sick and things came up). Working in a supportive, caring environment makes a big difference.#kinderchat
A3: Between my teaching partner and my other two teaching partners from another classroom we always support each other and have each others backs. If we ever need to leave or anything we just yell and they get it. It is also always helpful to have supportive bosses! #kinderchat
a3: We are on a 6 day cycle. In my google docs I have a plan for each day. It’s been my lifesaver this year! I don’t know why I took so long to come up with that #kinderchat
We also are on a 6 day cycle. Monday D1 to Friday D5 and then Monday Day 6 and so on. It’s really worked well just always needed class schedule posted everywhere LOL #Kinderchat
We are required to have emergency plans in the office. We also use Google and can share emergency sub plans there. Also @planbookcom is shared among my team - we could access if needed #kinderchat
Running friends. Sushi time with my son. Have a great week. Not sure when you’re done. Here public school in two weeks. Old school where I sub mostly, later around June 13 #kinderchat
A4: Hmm my hobbies are painting, doing arts and crafts, having bonfires with friends, playing sports, and rollerblading. Since I am in school I do what I can when I have time, I am looking forward to joining sports teams again once school is done! #kinderchat
A4: I like to hike with my dogs or go for runs around our dirt road, camping in the spring/summer and I also run a side business (health and wellness field) technically another job but I find it to be more of a hobby as it does not feel like work! Great community! #kinderchat
A4: When it isn't snowy I enjoy riding my bike. I usually do the same loop which is roughly 10km! I also enjoy fishing with my dad. I find sitting on the lake very calming. 🐟🎣🚲 #kinderchat
A4: I coach swimming at nights. I know its a job and not a hobby, but it is a home away from home. It is a comfort place for me, even though it is loud and chaotic. Hobbies: swimming, beading, gym, reading, biking. #kinderchat
A4: I run because it’s cheaper than therapy. I hike, I do yoga, I visit with friends. once I finish this masters work in December I will be about 80% less stressed, so that will be good… #kinderchat
anything outdoors! listening to birds, taking my dog for a walk, or going exploring! does having a drink on the patio count? haha! #summertime#kinderchat
I work at a library part time and often get first pick at the books being sold, 50 cents a book! My collective is getting a tad out of control! #kinderchat
Q5: To end our chat, tell us the best piece of advice/nugget of wisdom a veteran teacher or amazing administrator ever gave you about self-care in the teaching profession. #kinderchat
A5: A lovely teacher told me to remember what it says in the Bible..."and it came to pass". I still love that. And that prayer changes things. And remember to breathe. #kinderchat
A5: Hmm the best piece of advice I ever received was to always have fun and work for the S's. I had a truly inspirational host teacher who did everything for the S's and he took no credit, he loved teaching and truly inspired me. #kinderchat

My AP often says And this too will pass . . . so true. In the long run, it's probably not as important or as bad as you think it is in the moment #kinderchat
A5: I have only been to a few schools, for a handful of teachers. I don't think I've been given one-on-one advice. But I would love to hear yours! #kinderchat
