#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
"Thought Provoking" is purposely subjective to a certain degree because an indiviudal's ability to create a "teachable moment" from a song is a skill #HipHopEd
Please share the links to the songs that you are suggesting whenever possible and the song has to have been released during the 2017 calendar year #hiphoped
Seriously can we count @blackthought’s 10min as a 2017 song bc that’s what’s up #HipHopEd Timely, connected, informed, deep, and aware. It’s what old heads have been waiting for
The songs that you suggest do not have to be from “commercial” artists. Last year there was a song created about Healthy eating by a nonprofit that made the list so dig in your virtual crates #HipHopEd

"I get sad when I look at the stars
They so pretty, you can't tell 'em apart
You think they close but really we far
And really, they ain't even that much closer to God" @chancetherapper
First World Problems #HipHopEd
Vodka Yellow gets a vote from me as it was the first rap w/female vocals to hit #1 in a generation. Much 4 Students 2 dissect in terms of race, gender & class. Video adds another layer #thoughprovoking#hiphoped
In January, Crooked dropped "Alternative Facts," a short but powerful jawn on the erosion of truth from 45 and his empty way of thinking #hiphopedhttps://t.co/52jtSZhyJe
#HipHopEd(ucators) watch French Montana's Unforgettable video/doc w/ students to facilitate dialogue on Uganda, Africa, globalization https://t.co/S0vKj3z8cQ
#HipHopEd(ucators) analyze/critique Story of OJ vid by Jay-Z to facilitate dialogue on institutional racism, financial literacy https://t.co/O0ByxnZj6l
Just as important as the song is the public conversation around the song. Ask students to explore how an artist's identity + social location impacts how their music is received. #hiphoped
Vic Mensa's "We Could Be Free" as example of positive REI and artistic branding, see the live performance w tat and connect w sing's autobiographical details re first gen American + revolutionary #HipHopEd#top20of2017
All of Lamar's "DAMN" was a crash course in hip hop for me, worth more than many hours of tip toeing around issues of racism in rooms full of white people (my normal practice) #HipHopEd
Just as important as the song is the public conversation around the song. Ask students to explore how an artist's identity + social location impacts how their music is received. #hiphoped
I loved the way Logic's "1-800-273-8255" (and @JoynerLucas's "I"m Sorry", even though it was released last year) helped normalize conversations about mental health and suicide. #hiphoped
Ask students to explore the whole song package: social media posts, artist interviews, music video, etc. What's the entire narrative? Who is it aimed at? Etc. Media literacy 2.0. #hiphoped
I love the video because its still so rare to see representations of Black male queerness in mainstream hip hop. Its an important piece of the narrative, and adds another dimension to the song. Plus, representation matters. #hiphoped
representation matters but I believed the song was broad and allowed the listener to find themselves in the song if need be and the video having one story line left some people thinking the song was only about that #HipHopEd
How many hip hop artists are talking about Palestine? Great tool for helping students understand the commonalities of global struggles. #hiphopedhttps://t.co/OxM9UaTZb3
Super interesting in my city. #thesix has birthed a new culture - these kids only listen to toronto artist. The pedagogical implication of this alone is made for rich discussion #HipHopEd
Just as important as the song is the public conversation around the song. Ask students to explore how an artist's identity + social location impacts how their music is received. #hiphoped
XXX by Kendrick def brings that NWA flava with the sirens but the story telling & juxtaposition of guns, grief & citizenship in USA is genius #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/fwNE8Gm5U1
I'm only 32 and the gap between music i know and what they listen to is growing larger every day. But a #HipHop presence always closes that gap #HipHopEd
Considering that there are so many single story narratives featuring straight folks, or other representations of hegemony, i'm not mad that someone else was centered for once. #hiphoped
#HipHopEd Nitty Scott’s “For Sarah Baartman” is full of rich allusions and is a perfect song to explore gender/race in this #metoo moment. https://t.co/nMqvI6LWOI
Totally understand and I don't think it was wrong to do, I was just pointing out how it was discussed in a workshop I did. The song and video are powerful tools #HipHopEd
I love this spoken word piece by @PrinceEa - A Message to Bullies
https://t.co/1WZaI4pPZT#hiphoped
Ss can discuss the power of words in literature, music, relationships, etc.
Another one. Overt political track but worth discussing what “freedom” means & has meant. Joey Bada$$ - "Land of the Free" (Official Music Video) https://t.co/Q5egdlqetG#hiphoped
JayZ's 4:44 is my thought provoking album of the year for so many reasons. He's a legend in the game, remains vulnerable and wears his heart on his sleeve #HipHopEd
Played joey bada$$ - amerikkkas badass during a class project, several students came up after asking about the artist, which sprouted into some heart felt convos around community issues #hiphoped
#HipHopEd Ask your students about what they are listening to and then ask them to examine their choices through a more critical lens. This list preceded a viewing of “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes”.
Total surprise & attitude check for me this year. Another amazing text to unpack. 21 Savage - Nothin New (Official Music Video) https://t.co/la0wX91KHO#HipHopEd
I'll nominate @lecrae "Facts" for its broader context. It's Religious hip-hop in an industry that minimizes blackness and he had enough. He has >1M followers and his reach is large in that community. https://t.co/KT2URIyzad#HipHopEd
I loved the way Logic's "1-800-273-8255" (and @JoynerLucas's "I"m Sorry", even though it was released last year) helped normalize conversations about mental health and suicide. #hiphoped
This is real. So many of us were (and still are) academic superstars. It is perhaps most important to love someone with whom we think we can't relate...this includes those who don't "do" school, or fit the mold of the "model student". #hiphoped
“In many ways, teachers are hardwired to look favourably upon students who remind them of themselves.” @chrisemdin This is also true of teachers, working with other teachers.
Yessir. I told @KingAdjapong to answer that in context of "teaching a group for one day" but I could never come back at the god with that retort, lol #HipHopEd
I'll say it again, J. Cole, and "Neighbors". The kids really got after reading and talking about perception vs. reality, gentrification, and the perils of fame and fortune for those who come from generational poverty. Their neighborhood is currently being gentrified. #HipHopEd
One of my favorite joints this year was Didn't I by Vic Mensa. Great for discussing growth, struggle, pain, dedication https://t.co/PnVeZ4qPvd#HipHopEd
