A2: BIST is a set of strategies collaborative teams can use to help redirect students struggling with making appropriate choices so that behavior does not become a barrier to academic achievement #wcedchat Also, BIST is working!
A1 BIST is a philosophy! It's a counterculture posture of accepting all children for who they are in the present while giving them the accountability and grace they need to develop into responsible individuals. #wcedchat
A1. BIST is grace and accountability, two necessary ingredients not only for school, but for life. People need acceptance no matter what, and they need encouragement in their role and purpose. #wcedchat
A1: BIST is a tool to be used for behavioral intervention with a certain population of students; a piece of the confusing puzzle that is classroom management. #wcedchat
I love this statement @emilyroderique ! When we redirect student behavior rather than just discipline, we send a message that we love the children and want them to be successful. Relationships are always number 1 #wcedchat
A2: I like the safe seat or the "calming corner" as I call it in my room. Allowing students to regroup before engaging in interactions can deescalate a behavior #wcedchat
A2: "Can you ### on your own right now or do you need some help?" Most Ss would rather ### on their own. This is working b/c our POD is consistent with this! :) #wcedchat
A2 My favorite BIST phrases start with "It looks like you are having a hard time with..." or "It seems like you're very upset about..." because it validates children's emotions. It helps them know that their struggles are valid and acknowledged, that they aren't alone. #wcedchat
A2: My favorite BIST strategy is giving students choices to help them stay out of trouble. This allows students to feel like they are still in charge of themselves #wcedchat
A2: I know it can be hard to let the adults be in charge BUT you can do it even if it's hard. What did the teacher see/hear that had them worried? How do we follow directions? (quickly & exactly) #wcedchat
A2. A favorite BIST line for me is the beginning of the goals: I can... I can make good choice; I can be okay; I can do something. It goes right along with what was heard at the Awaken assembly; learning you can deal with what is thrown at you. Just make good choices. #wcedchat
A2 - I LOVE the 3 life goals. I think they are great conversation starters and I have had Ss say "I am working on goal 1" or " I am getting better at goal 1" They help with accountability #wcedchat
A2: Love the Safe spot! Allows the cool down needed. Love - "I can see you are _____. Can you tell me what happened?" and "I'm sorry for...next time I will... Can you accept my apology"
#wcedchat
A2 "Are you okay?" Rather than pointing out the problem directly and publicly, the student has a chance to correct the problem on his/her own first. #wcedchat
A2: I love the phrase when we tell them we're worried and ask them what are we worried about. This changes the whole feel of the conversation for them. They have to state what the problem is which is part of accountability. #wcedchat
A2: Were you being hurtful or disruptive? What life goal did you break? I see that you are __________. Can you __________? The 3 step apology. #wcedchat
A2: I personally like, "I can do something even if it is hard" because once a S follows through with this statement, it is easier the next time they face a similar situation. #wcedchat
A2: I love the apology. Some of my students know it better than others, but it seems like a real apology instead of just empty words. I love that we can do things, even if we don't want to. "Too ____ed to BIST!" is my very favorite. Thank you, Marty! #wcedchat
A2: "I will only give you what you can handle" is one of my favorites. I also like "I can do something even if I don't want to or even if it's hard" for students. #wcedchat
A2: We talk about the three “Goals for My Life.” Most of the time we hit on, “I can make good choices even if I am mad.” and “ I can do something even if I don’t want to (or if it’s hard)” #wcedchat
A2: I love the stems:
“I see..”
“Can you..”
“Even though..”
Shows understand and empathy, but let’s students know they are breaking the expectation and how to fix it #wcedchat
A2-my favorite BISTY thing is simply giving kids a chance to be better; make better choices & giving them a voice. Kiddos need to know they are valued & BIST allows that.#wcedchat
A2: BiST "Rules of conversation"... Ss must Look at my eyes/nose/mouth when we talk, they must be honest & Ss can't use the words "I don't know" because they know all the answers to the questions I'm asking them. #wcedchat
A3: Students are taking responsibility for their emotions and actions while learning how to respond to those emotions and actions in a more constructive way. #wcedchat
A3: Webster is rocking the consistency of common expectations, and language which reinforces to the students and parents that EACH child belongs to ALL teachers & staff within our building. EVERY student is VALUED!❤️#wcedchat
A2-my favorite BISTY thing is simply giving kids a chance to be better; make better choices & giving them a voice. Kiddos need to know they are valued & BIST allows that.#wcedchat
A2: "Are you okay?" when seeing a gateway behavior. We're quick to think they are being disrespectful, but many times Ss have let me know they are not okay, and it has nothing to do with what I thought! #wcedchat
A3: BIST has positively impacted the way that new teachers interact with students, knowing ways to communicate with students and combat behavior to be on top of it early in the year. #wcedchat
A3:BIST Benefits: Unity among adults! Students choosing the safe seat or to take themselves out of situations where they might get in trouble. Kids speaking in life goal language to each other! I could go on.....#wcedchat
A3: Benefits of BIST in my building are numerous. There have been improvements in common area expectations and overall communication of behavior expectations to our Ss. Positive relationships with Ss are strengthened with BIST. #wcedchat
A3 The greatest benefit of BIST in our buildings is that it teaches accountability. Our students are learning to identify their feelings, separate them from potential actions, and take ownership for their behavior. This gives them dignity! #wcedchat
A3: Only major incidents are going up to the office. Most situations are being handled in the classroom so Ss are not missing out on instruction. #buildingrelationships#wcedchat
A3. As a philosophy, BIST has simplified things that seemed complex earlier; life goals knocked down to 3 basic expectations. Easy to teach and discuss repeatedly and never gets old. #wcedchat
A3 I started to BIST a student once over a chronic classroom behavior, and the initial conversation was all it took to correct the behavior. Confession: it seemed too easy, haha! #wcedchat
A3: Some of the benefits are that teachers are not only building relationships with their own students, but also students from other classes and other grades. There are some amazing things happening at Webster!!! #wcedchat
A3: Some of the benefits I have noticed from BIST are more quiet hallways, bathrooms, and other spaces. I love that my students will try sometimes, even if they don't want to. #wcedchat
A3: I am starting to see a more inclusive/widely adopted system of how to converse with students who have not met expectations. It's still in the works, but the potential is exciting. #wcedchat
A3: BIST has many benefits in our building but my favorite one is having ss take on leadership jobs. These leadership jobs really give the ss a sense of responsibility and pride for our school. I love seeing the ss excited to do their jobs each day!
#wcedchat
A3: The benefits BIST provides the building are a consistent approach across grades and classrooms, as well as a decrease in behavior. Students are learning to express themselves more effectively. #wcedchat
A3: In the JH, team Clever is implementing safe seats and buddy rooms for a student. For me personally, he has successfully (mostly) adapted his behavior to avoid the safe seat. #wcedchat
A4 The three life goals ARE Life goals, it's refreshing to see a skill being taught that will be used in all areas of their lives, for their entire life #WCEDCHAT
This is so authentically @Stephmoore66. If you want to see what a loving classroom looks/feels like, go watch her interact with her kids. She believes in every student in her class and they know it #wcedchat
A2-my favorite BISTY thing is simply giving kids a chance to be better; make better choices & giving them a voice. Kiddos need to know they are valued & BIST allows that.#wcedchat
A3 I see calmer teachers and therefor calmer Ss when handling a problem. Also teacher more confident in how to hold Ss accountable for their actions while building great relationships. #wcedchat
Q3: I love seeing the collaboration amongst coworkers for problem-solving challenging behaviors and providing accountability with "buddy room" support #wcedchat
Curious is always better than furious! Mercy trumps judgement any day of the week. BIST and @MartyHuitt and fellow trainers give us the tools to stay curious #wcedchat
A2: "Are you okay?" when seeing a gateway behavior. We're quick to think they are being disrespectful, but many times Ss have let me know they are not okay, and it has nothing to do with what I thought! #wcedchat
A2: my favorite thing about BIST is the grace it gives students. Students need to know that even if they make mistakes, they are still loved and that we still care about them. BIST allows this. #wcedchat
I can't wait until we've done this for some years and Ss show up to our building with with expectations that are common throughout the district! #wcedchat
A3: I am starting to see a more inclusive/widely adopted system of how to converse with students who have not met expectations. It's still in the works, but the potential is exciting. #wcedchat
A3: So many exciting things, but one of the most powerful things I see happening is the philosophical shift of looking at missing behavioral skills the same way we view missing academic skills...both have to be taught. Kudos to teachers for taking that on! #wcedchat
A3 I think one of the best benefits is really embracing giving kids the opportunity to fix something on their own before a teacher needs to intervene. #wcedchat
A3: Kindergarten Ss are starting to separate emotions/actions (usually, they are fused... e.g. I'm mad = I hit). I'm seeing more students take a step back and become conscious of how/what they do impacts others around them. #wcedchat
Love those too! So many times Ss think we want them to be in trouble. Or when they are in triubke, think we hate them. BIST helps shed those misconceptions. #wcedchat
Also my new motto... “I can do all things without arguing or complaining”. My students now chant this daily and the number of gateway behaviors has decreased! 🙌🏻🙀😻 #wcedchat
A3: T’s on the same page on how to best help s’s. Progress is being made with tough kids. Seeing decreases in disruptive behavior during class time. #wcedchat
A3: Ss are more responsive to me when I take the time to question their feelings and actions without being emotional and robbing their dignity. More “traditional” punishments can break down relationships and BIST grows the relationship through tough convo. #wcedchat
A4: There are so many real world benefits. If someone around you does something that makes you angry or upset, you have skills to handle that situation in a more positive and productive way. #wcedchat
BIST has truly changed my thinking and provided me with tools to help me be the leader I WANT and need to be to positively impact kids. I like the BISTing me way better. #wcedchat
This is great! We aren't solely content instructors. "I teach math" vs. "I teach kids". We are shaping entire lives which obviously requires more than knowledge of content areas! #wcedchat
A3: So many exciting things, but one of the most powerful things I see happening is the philosophical shift of looking at missing behavioral skills the same way we view missing academic skills...both have to be taught. Kudos to teachers for taking that on! #wcedchat
A4: T hope to teach students life skills, create more “time on task” behavior, and decrease the
need to remove students from regular classroom instruction. #wcedchat
A4: We all need to breathe, pause, calm down, reset sometimes, especially if we are not acting in the manner in which we should. And it is never okay to be disruptive or hurtful, even in real life and in adulthood. #wcedchat
A5: BIST empowers Ss to take charge of their own behavior & consider how their choices impact others. This benefits Ss in the real world because it promotes development of their empathy & consciousness, both of which are essential elements of responsible maturity #wcedchat
A4: BIST gives children the ability to think about what they have done and what they could do to change it in the future. This is a skill they will need the rest of their lives #wcedchat
A4. Connecting BIST to the real world has been rewarding in class. The students and I had a discussion at the start of the year on ways they could stay okay even when angry. Below is the accumulated list of ideas our SI classes put together. #wcedchat
A4: BIST isn't just about being ok & compliant at school. It is about having LIFE SKILLS that will help students have & keep relationships/jobs EVEN when its tough. Every person messes up. Adults, too. We have to be accountable & be able to say I did it and I'm sorry. #wcedchat
A4: I sometimes remind myself that "I can do something even if I don't want to, or if it's hard". If Ss practice now, it will become habit for them later in life! #wcedchat
A4) BIST myself at Walmart or when driving: I can be okay even when others are not okay. When I am trying to parent: I can do this even if it is hard and I don't want to, not age/gender specific, applicable at the work place, relationship, or dealing with the public #wcedchat
#wcedchat Some real world benefits to using BIST include the mentality that it is never okay to be hurtful. No matter what someone has done to you or will do to you, there are other ways to address the pain and anger besides being hurtful!
A4: Giving students an authentic look at the expectations of the real world in an educational and supportive manner. They have to learn to accept responsibility and work to learn the skills necessary for their job. #wcedchat
A4 We all have to do things we don’t want to and things that are hard. BIST helps with teaching Ss how to self regulate and hold them accountable for their actions #wcedchat
A4: Life is hard! We are supposed to be preparing our students for the real world, so let's give them skills to be able to cope with the hards things that will come at them as adults. #wcedchat
A4 If students leave school knowing how to continue to work even if they do not want to or feel like it, they carry those skills into the workforce. I guarantee employers will take notice! #wcedchat
A4: There are times in life we ALL have to do things we don't want to do. It doesn't end when you're an adult. The earlier Ss learn that, the easier it will be later. #lifegoals#wcedchat
Sometimes the more challenging the circumstances, the stronger the relationships become...great tools to help us build those strong relationships #wcedchat
A4: Students learn the three life skills: "I can make good choices even if I am mad. I can be okay even if others are not okay. I can do something even if I don't want to or it is hard." Those are always useful in the real world! #wcedchat
A4: Students will be able to handle problems that arise when they are grown and working at a job. They can talk through situations, calm themself, and take themself away from situations they don't want to be in.
#wcedchat
A4: The biggest real world benefit I've seen is the ability of the students to express themselves in a respectful and effective manner. It will go a long way toward their ability to cope with difficult circumstances. #wcedchat
A4: I think that BIST makes the person be accountable and lets our students prepare for the job they will have. "If it won't work on a job, it won't work here."
#wcedchat
A4 success at life goals = life success! BIST in the real world means Ss grow up thinking through actions and changing behaviors for success if needed. BIST life. BEST life. #wcedchat
A4: BIST helps students identify their emotions. When they can identify their emotions, they can learn to work through them with the help of caring adults.
#wcedchat
A4: It focuses on solutions. It helps kids actually learn from what they did wrong and think about what they can do differently next time. It's almost like a re-do or a reset button for them #wcedchat
A4: The goals are skills necessary to succeed in the real world. It is our responsibility to teach Ss who are lacking these skills to increase the opportunity for a successful transition to a post-school world. #wcedchat
Your comment made me smile! My 1st grader came home talking about gateway behaviors the other night. @mrsleewc and @JoannaPayne08 must be talking about those. And kids are listening!! 😄 #wcedchat
A4: It helps Ss practice productive decision making in times when they aren’t okay or are encountering something difficult. #thatslife#lifegoals#wcedchat
A3: Kindergarten Ss are starting to separate emotions/actions (usually, they are fused... e.g. I'm mad = I hit). I'm seeing more students take a step back and become conscious of how/what they do impacts others around them. #wcedchat
Q4 By using BIST we are teaching students to learn and grow into responsible and respectful community members and be able to function in the real world #wcedchat
A4: I also love how it provides opportunities for teachers to open up about and share with students that these things apply to us even as adults. A great way to enhance relationships with all students. #wcedchat
A5: Support/collaborate with teachers to develop protection plans for students so that we don't put them in situations that they don't have the skills for yet. Teach & practice. TRIAGE! #wcedchat
A5 The next step in my BIST journey is learning to verbally model a full range of emotions to our children. They need to see that adults can safely and kindly express negative feelings so that they learn to emulate those ways of being on their own. #wcedchat
A5: continue to support my fellow teachers so we stay consistent throughout our building. Sometimes school is the only consistency in a Ss life! #wcedchat
A5: Becoming a trauma informed school while implementing BIST strategies can help us assist the growing number of students who have faced childhood trauma #wcedchat
#wcedchat My personal next step with BIST is to learn more about triaging with my kiddos and what that looks like and sounds like in my classroom and building.
A5: my next steps are still being consistent and intentional in the use of BIST. I often realize that I could have used it after the episode is done. #wcedchat
A5. My next steps in BIST are to process more of the statements into my working memory and to develop more lessons that implement the 3 life goals. They do indeed prepare students for adulthood and for reality. Tonight’s archive may be the most useful one yet! #wcedchat
A5 To have meaningful conversations with my Ss and continue to hold them and myself accountable for behaviors. Also, help them understand their big emotions and work on how we should respond when we start to feel our big emotions coming on #wcedchat
A5 I do not have the opportunity to use the strategies with my crew very often (once a year is often), so my skills mostly sit on the back burner until a situation arises. #wcedchat
A5: I have really taken the time to listen and find out the whole situation. Loved helping students work through problems and giving them tools to succeed!!!
#wcedchat
A5: I need to practice more with my Ss. Get comfortable with the phrases and remind myself that every small step is helping even if it doesn’t feel like it #wcedchat
The lifegoals are so important. And oh so applicable to LIFE ... I never want to pay my bills... but I can do something even if I don’t want to or it’s hard! #wcedchat
A5: Process quicker with Ss when able. Remind myself to hold Ss accountable to 2 redirects. Sometimes I get busy teaching & it is easy to forget how many redirects I have given a particular Ss. #wcedchat
A5: My personal next steps for BIST include becoming more consistent with the triage, and more fluid in my practices. I would like for it to be a natural response. #wcedchat
A5: Continue to use BIST language with Ss who are showing behaviors. I'd love to get to a point where I don't have to think about the language so much and just be able to do it! #wcedchat
A5: I'm at the very, very tip top of the BIST iceberg - there's so much more that I need to learn and practice. It would be nice to be fluent in the processes. #wcedchat
A5: Continuing to practice using the BIST language more consistently. There are many times I realize what I should have said after I have already said the non-BISTy phrase. #wcedchat
A5: If there is one thing I hear most often in schools in regards to goals teachers set for themselves around BIST, it’s getting more comfortable with the language, so if that’s you you’re not alone! If we can support you with this, just let us know! #wcedchat
#wcedchat When reflecting on tonight's BIST, I am so thankful that Marty is here to join us and give us feedback and insight. I am thankful that as a district, we are adopting this district wide and that students will have a CLEAR expectation no matter what school or grade.
A6: If we focus on the philosophy of BIST and try to show grace and increase accountability, then we are on the right track and the language will come. When in doubt, ask the child a question to get the conversation started :) #wcedchat
A:6 A takeaway from tonight's #wcedchat is that BIST bring self awareness to the students and ourselves and helps us learn to solve real life problems!
Thank you @MartyHuitt and @nickoddo_bist for joining #wcedchat tonight. BIST will help us continue the conversations while helping our cardinals (big and small) be better versions of ourselves.
A6: I'm glad I'm not alone when it comes to being uncomfortable with BIST language and triage. I also loved some of the new/refreshed phrases that were shared! I can't wait to use them. #wcedchat
A6 Some great reminders about having grace. Remembering they are missing a skill that needs to be taught and it may take time just like academic skills. Keep building the relationship while working on skills #wcedchat
Thanks for a great #wcedchat this evening. I learned a great deal! If you would like to be counted toward your building's participation goal, please complete this form https://t.co/nmhJFYLxda by 8am Friday morning. Only one per person please.
