So Howard... we're talking school design here. What do the times demand?
To some degree, changing the space is the least important change we can make. First we have to change the purpose.
What opportunities to choose tech are you giving your students? how does your school leadership support or impede your wishes?

there would have to be time built in for human connection - Morning Meeting, Advisory...We need the time & space for it.
No computer room, Lots of space for physical activity, flexible space for large group, small group, ind work, 1:1
As a guy who tries to change what and how in the classroom, the kids always get stuck on the why. Especially when it isn't grades.
SCHOOL DESIGN involves much more than bricks and mortar… even tho bricks and mortar matter. What else included in design?
Join Topic: Addressing the building and not just the classroom what would a school, designed by you for our time, include?
School design effects teaching & learning. Ask "what is it we want for Ss and Ts?" Collaborative and flexible spaces come to mind.
Learners make decisions for small immediate rewards, failing to consider highly valued long-term goal https://t.co/D3DVQcW8ZW
All schools moving forward should have spaces for collaboration.
I think if I were starting my own school I would first change the curriculum. I wouldn't throw everything we do out though.
How might we murder flawless complications in the modern age?
GREAT SCHOOLS have no single blueprint for their design.
There would be dedicated time & space for quiet reading. Carpeted rooms, comfortable seating, ample supply of books that kids love
Schools should have both formal and informal spaces for learning
All schools need more outlets for charging devices throughout the building.
New design needs to rethink teachers giving grades as well as assigning to a grade level.
but not just for Ss. Build in adult collaborative spaces for all.
we can take care of that pretty easily, I put in several charging 'stations' in my classroom last year. Very popular.

Once worked in a school that included a health dept. office, public/school library, and rec. center staffed by both school and city
- what kinds of collaboration, among which groups, and in what kinds of spaces?
Most definitely. Collaboration has become a big part of adult learning as well.
I did find students were always in and out of my room checking on their phones. Some would find that disruptive.
Desks that allow students to stand or sit, lots of bandwidth, laptops for all, no time out room, no faculty room,
Ss should be able to learn inside and outside the classroom
Yes! Like airport charging stations, with security measures to unlock devices from chargers. https://t.co/3QFgMG20gs
All schools need more outlets for charging devices throughout the building.
Great ideas for all teachers to use: Memorial Day in the Classroom: Resources for Teachers. https://t.co/CiASeJx0KF
I see us moving more and more towards that. If we had more space...
AN OFTEN OVERLOOKED ASPECT OF SCHOOL DESIGN -> teachers authority over their work. Pay attention!
Don’t underestimate power of quality debrief/reflection.These are the learning conversations where true growth lives!
My school would have both nice classrooms of various sizes and purposes along with big commons areas and smaller areas.
no textbooks, no lockers, locker rooms with private stalls for all, no cafeteria-students eat in other spaces
How might we drum made-up students in the modern age?
In progress Topic: Addressing the building and not just the classroom what would a school, designed by you for our time, include?
If we are imagining what we want, first eliminate the constraints and see a vision. Then backward map.
IS THE DESIGN OF YOUR SCHOOL conducive for doing serious academic work? Deep learning, high quality instruction, multiple pedagogies
Design would be very important, along with real art on the walls and different kinds of background music playing.
We need to reconsider the furniture we use in schools. Durable & stackable are not enough to be the furniture standards in schools.
How close are we to remote charging?
gotta start with the purpose, for sure.
YES, Yes, and YES ... Thanks Rosemary!
Bandwidth able to provide fast connections for all as well has handle plenty of streaming video

SCHOOL DESIGN involves resources, time, staffing patterns, space, courses, and much much more. What else…
If you want to improve the lives and intellectual achievements of Ss and Ts then great care must be given to the design of a school.
Starting math focused ed blog geared toward giving parents resources. Best platform?
Because all kinds of art are important and our students don't get the exposure they deserve (because schools make those decisions)
LEARNING by its very nature is disruptive...
LOOK AROUND YOUR SCHOOL… does its design enable cooperation and collaboration or isolation and co-existing?
Outdoor collaboration areas that are close to the classroom, but with open space, greenery and freedom for Ss to move
I would restate the Q a bit. What kind of school would you design for your own kids or grandkids if you started with a blank page?

yeah, but not all disruptions lead to learning ;)
So crazy... how'd we get into this crazy artless place in education?
Schools should have "family rooms," like a home. Families would be welcome at any time. Fill it with resources; staff it with a kid!
spaces can be adapted, I think. First things first?
We have lots of interesting content for parents on our blog. We'd love to hear your thoughts! https://t.co/b2zbmPxToV
So what kind of school...????
I dunno that they ever were a bastion of art. Mine wasn't. My room is becoming more and more that way though.
Schools can help connect students and their community by loaning hotspots and offering digital literacy training
Schools are owned by the community and should be open for comm use. If the comm will bear the cost, why not 24/7?
Envision what you would want and only then think about the building. Form defines function.
Classrooms need to take the leap! https://t.co/gYmBNVAgkv
All schools need more outlets for charging devices throughout the building.
Love the idea of the students being the experts and helping others w/ resources.
I would love an innovation lab w two way glass so Ts can observe other Ts trying new ideas, tech; like a surgical viewing gallery
No single location. "Satellites" throughout a community, open to the public. Spaces in museums, workplaces. https://t.co/Om39dq1VWs
I would restate the Q a bit. What kind of school would you design for your own kids or grandkids if you started with a blank page?
Building leaders play such a critical role in the success of teacher learners & development of student-centered practice
yes! High-capacity broadband so crucial for to succeed!
Also, a centralized design. There is much too divide among teachers in buildings across a school campus
My school wud have space&time for Art,Music&Creativity. Also, space for deep academic focus-reading, essay writing, research, tech
Corporate/political reforms have driven out art. All rooms should be art rooms/maker rooms.
Primary Reading record features enough space for 322 reading sessions with 46-page reading record https://t.co/N3FAhnP8qM
Also space for cross-curricular collaboration..perhaps a special room for this!
Is the main office of a school, comfortable & welcoming to anyone who enters, or is it like a bench to sit on awaiting punishment? ?
Even when physical aspects of school design are immutable, much room for innovation / improvement in other aspects of school design.
yes they do... what do they need to know? What advice from you?
Do you know of any innovative school designs? I'd be curious to check out school sites who are trying something new
Everything you see on TV, magazines, Internet, etc was created by artists.
turning school buildings into community resource centers and hubs for social good. Great!
Schools are noisy places. I would like to see noise dampening taken seriously-perhaps carpeting and other echo-dampening techniques
I see that as a different issue actually, that would be more how than what or why
Sometimes noise is good! It means the kids are engaged
very cool idea... noise dampening makes so much sense. Anyone doing this?

What would your focus be when thinking about a design for an ELEM -vs- MS - vs HS?
COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTERS MAKE SO MUCH SENSE, anyone doing this now?
Space is limited thanks to budgeting and square footage. But it has a few chairs and air conditioning! 😃
curious, why the separate spaces?
we don't see that as art. I want to teach a film as art elective next year because to kids they are movies...
TO WHAT XTENT DOES THE DESIGN OF YOUR SCHOOL inhibit or support family and community involvement???
sometimes we have to be shown how to appreciate something, especially when we have taken it for granted.
Hey Diane he's the guy for you to ask your question ->
The main office of any school is the 1st thing most people see. You never get a 2nd chance at 1st impressions. What does yours say?
would you need space for reflection?
RT TeachingIdeasHQ " News: Tony Blair: Western troops need to fight a ‘proper’ war with ISIS https://t.co/tiN6X5y739 …
we are working on in slowly, probably intentionally though :)
sounds heavenly... does your school have any of this now?
YES, but then shouldn't every space in a school be a space where reflection occurs?
Way to Grow, William !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have you ever tried to teach kids to reflect? That is so hard... '
Good evening! 👍🏻 We'll see you again tomorrow 📱
No but where taught before there was a huge focus on T collaboration, I always thought a special space wud b good!
DESIGNING A SCHOOL THAT WORKS WELL involves much reflection, lots of interaction, and many difficult choices. But worth it!
I agree! I was thinking more of noise of movement in halls and the background “roar” heard in some large schools

Often convenience and cost — not teaching and learning — drive decisions about school design. The result…inconvenience/wasted money.

rooms for staff collaboration that are not the teacher's lounge or another teacher's classroom
Video screens in hallways, libraries, by the main office, where stu work can be displayed and easily, as well as constantly, rotated
We'd love to share it when you do! Or when you write anything, really! The world deserves your best!
A room to unplug or disconnect for a little while. It's ok to be off the grid sometimes! Lol
you actually made me think of adult reflection. I understand getting rid of faculty rooms, but do you have your own space?

Video screens in hallways, libraries, by the main office, where stu work can be displayed and easily, as well as constantly, rotated
was asking about no cafe and no group locker rooms. Is there harm in those spaces you'd like to change?
Topic now: Addressing the building and not just the classroom what would a school, designed by you for our time, include?
Improvements in lighting may mean we can get rid of harsh fluorescents. Softer lights whose tones can be adjusted would be nice
cool! Thanks for sharing!
It would have common space - a classroom or atrium with seating for larger from/combined space.
There's also no single blueprint for how to teach students.
Since we are a new school K-12, we have a room. Very good for our SPD, autistic, and other kids w sensory input needs.
Would a mini town model help foster community? thinking of traditional sections as: a town hall, art museum, library, theater, cafe
Displayed throughout a school! Yes, yes, 1000x yes! https://t.co/ubkYQV46WK
And twitter feeds! https://t.co/G1aUOZmz6d
Video screens in hallways, libraries, by the main office, where stu work can be displayed and easily, as well as constantly, rotated
What is your teaching philosophy that you use in your classroom? Why do you favor it?
Me, half hotel lobby/half library. Spaces 4 collaboration & research. Remainder outside in world https://t.co/tIy67VKSx0
My school doesn't have screens, but glass cabinets in every hall where Ss sculptures, pictures, and projects are displayed
At what point do we ease up on the pursuit of making up deficits in the interest of accentuating existing and ?
it could... i suspect that it'll take something more than what the mini town model can provide...
you should adapt your teaching to suit your students not the other way round
Seems like stereotype for comm resource centers is for those in need; not for everyone.
Don't limit access to opportunities "just because." If the kid can conceivably do it, let him/her do it.
That's great. So needn't be physical space.
YES! There are so many students with sensitivity to fluorescent lights, never mind myself.
Agreed! Form follows function.
Also a breakout/calming room for students who need it (anxiety, accommodations, behaviour, etc.).

yes. But still want to see something bigger that really welcomes the entire community.

Fabricated realities = attitudes, mistrust, abilities, etc.
Which is your ?
Thanks to today's moderator team & and to all who participated in today's chat.
so what is it that welcomes the community? A building? People? Activities?
YES! There should be special places designed for these students, not just a guidance counselor's office
Yes, schools ARE resource centers! The entire school. Make them like community centers.
Great to be back helping mod now that school is over and the crazy is done. :) Thanks and

Can be frustrating as a teacher to have a great idea, but then not sure how to execute it within the building set up.
