#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
A1. As a facilitator who goes into different classes during the day to work w/Ss & co-pilot w/Ts, we are using the laptops when I am there and often when I'm not depending on the grade- esp 3rd-5th & language classes & 1stgr w/ipads #5thchat
We use iPads on a daily basis, our learners use Empower for our LMS where we house all of our content. Learners also use their iPads to create artifacts to demonstrate their understanding of our measurement topics and learning targets #5thchat
QUESTION 2: How has immediate access to information online changed the way that you teach? How are students using technology to find information? #5thchat
A2 - One cool thing about immediate access to information is that whenever I take time to lecture, my students are looking up details, extending their learning, and offering interesting facts to add to the conversation. #5thchat
A2- Immediate access to information online has made meeting the learners needs and interests easier. It also allows learners more opportunities to hone in on an interest of theirs and apply what we are learning in the classroom #5thchat
A2 it has allowed me to be more of a facilitator of learning and a guide in proving learning. Differentiation is much easier and Ss don’t even realize it #5thchat
A2: Immediate access makes it easy to dive in to inquiry, do quick reference look-ups, and share learning with others. We love creating things to teach others about what they are learning #5thchat
A3 - Technology was a HUGE game-changer for me once we got enough devices and internet access became consistent. Kids now maintain personal ePortfolios, create visible thinking videos, and connect with students around the world! #5thchat
A3 I love that I can flip my classroom or have videos available for kids who are gone from class. ❤️that my Ss are taking responsibility for their learning. Kids were gone today and sent emails asking for paperwork to be sent home and to alert me to finished work #5thchat
A3: Technology has allowed me to give learners opportunities to use real world skills to create. Our Tech Integrationist @KnipsTech does a great job of introducing and facilitating new apps to our learners #5thchat
A4 - My students participate in Passion Time twice each week, exploring their personal interests. They research solutions to problems in our social studies simulations along the Oregon Trail and on our Martian colony. #5thchat
A4) I have used tech to allow my Ss to research and create genius hour projects, share opinions and thoughts with Flipgrid, practice vocab with @PearDeck there are so many #5thchat
A2: There's no reason to restrict technology usage for anything (us "real world" people use it all the time!) Let students use ANY outside resource to answer any question. Instead, spend time teaching HOW to find information rather than gathering it all yourself. #5thchat
QUESTION 2: How has immediate access to information online changed the way that you teach? How are students using technology to find information? #5thchat
2/2 However, more importantly. Let them answer "real world" questions for the real world! Let students explore THEIR interests, learn more, and act on it. Their passion and motivation should not be hampered by standardized curriculum. #5thchat

QUESTION 2: How has immediate access to information online changed the way that you teach? How are students using technology to find information? #5thchat
Love the math game of @ProdigyGame. My kids LOVE it and their skills are growing! So many great websites that engage my kids in their interests #5thchat
A4: Ss have innovation day during our combo sci/tech time in the makerspace. They create, build, code, learn, teach others- all based on their interests. #5thchat
A5 - We do #MysterySkype, @PenpalSchools, and various other collaborative projects with others around the world. Technology allows us to make connections and communicate! #5thchat
No large equipment needed. Just literal and figurative space for creating/making/tinkering, etc. Cardboard, duct tape, glue guns, recyclables are your friend. You'll never drive/walk by/look at empty boxes or pallets the same way #5thchat
A5 @Mysteryskype is great for critical thinking, geography, and collaboration skills.@globalreadaloud is another way we connect with schools and share our wadding if a novel. Reaching out to authors and experts make learning REAL. #5thchat
QUESTION 7: How does technology assist with differentiation & allow students work at their own pace, readiness level, or on their personal interests? #5thchat
A6 I have a spreadsheet that includes standards and a rating of 4,3,2,1. After assessments of proof of learning we discuss if mastery is reached and then share the rating with Ss. They see and I can keep track. #5thchat
A7) Tech allows for more freedom in research and presentation, it allows for a variety of Ss to feel challenged and supported and gives Ts more options for materials and tools for engagement and models for learning #5thchat
A7 - My kids are able to work at their own pace on technology, helping their peers and extending their learning on their own. Most of the time the activity doesn’t even matter - works across the board! #5thchat
A7 I love that tech puts Ss on an even playing field. What I mean is passages can be read for the poor reader. Poor spellers can speak and have their work typed. #5thchat
A8) Tech is so much apart of our lives I think it prepares Ss for the future and being digitally responsible. Teaching them to seek the information they need and find true resources #5thchat
A8)Technology has allowed me the tools to make sure that learners are able collaborate, create, and think outside the box. Technology is a part of our daily lives in and out of school. #5thchat
A9. JUMP in! A GRowth mindset is all that is needed. Remind Ss that we all make mistakes and if you do well okay! Your Ss will LOVE that you took a chance!! #5thchat
A9) Don’t be afraid to try something new! Ask for help if you need it. It might not go perfectly the first time...that’s ok. Tech can do so many things if you just give it a try! #5thchat
A8. Talking about digital citizenship while they are still young and impressionable is important. It makes them better creators of material because they know and understand copyright laws. #5thchat
