A3: I will just read along for this one. Would love ideas that would work in English, History, etc. and World Languages.
my Ss rarely take "notes" because we're always "doing". Notes seems to equal lecture in my mind & I'm not a big lecturer
A3: Ss used Docs voice to text to record stories. Then used translate for my ELL students so they could share with Ps.
Strong echo! Great resource to differentiate. https://t.co/6X35B4JcnQ
One great tool is
Worth your look. You will love it.
A3:Also makes me think of 's work of Active Literacies: hear it, read it, speak it, write it across the curriculum
A3: I use to connect curriculum. Also gives authentic audience so Ss practice more.
Check out tools by and that can provide supports
Totally agree. We do it for Ss but don't for teachers when we do PD. Hmmm...wonder!
Indeed! You build THAT in your school culture & the Ss will find the tools/apps to enhance their reading & writing.
Me too! Why force Ss to use a strategy that doesn't help access the learning? https://t.co/6LqYt0rK66
I'll have to find the article about benefits of doodling while note taking.
Would have helped me as a student.
A3: Our district also uses for great graphic organizers and reading/writing skill building
A3: speed-dating for help on claim development, solving big prob of my essay; all S's see all S's have challenges, work together
A3: we often refer back to the tools from workshop - anchor charts, tool kits, etc. what they learn in wkshp is for other areas too
Q4: How can technology support students in math who have dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia?
Q4: How can technology support students in math who have dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia?
so they can refer to them to refresh their memory days or weeks later
A4 talking calculator auditory feedback to help check the accuracy of the keys pressed & verify the answer before it gets to paper.
A3 Wouldn't have graduated college without Commodore 64 to write papers w/ spell check. Typewriter no way. Simple tools help.
I need to check that out. https://t.co/nOnVw3314a
Voxer--a tool for student/parent use in reading? Sped classroom, student reads into Voxer and send voice message to parent
It is another great tool for Students with Learning Disabilities.
A3 the Internet?? Oh you we looking for something more specific. My bad. We read tutorials to get ideas
I understand, but, most of borrow work from others. Ts would be upset to leave a wksp with just their own notes.
Yes! Always ask the question, what is the skill here, & how is what I'm requiring Ss to do reinforcing it? https://t.co/rx3vT253L9
A2-I know there are many methods but believe we often focus too much on "taking" and not "understanding" notes and purpose for Edu
also 's articles are great for differentiating content.
I love using it because Ss get to decide what the imp details are - great way to do so
Great suggestions! https://t.co/zkGXU1iIKD
A3. Some great tools for reading are -Read and Write extension- Also a tool like Read180.
A2 Need to teach students the "why" re: complete notes. Mainly useless other than as honed reference for objective/coverage exams.
A3 Some eBooks in libraries with Destiny allow read-aloud.
Shifted from the dumping of new material & kids writing everything down to conversations around what is important.
Often this is true! Thanks for reminding us.
Also for differentiated reading in top texts, incl. Hi-Lo. Plus in-text annotation / portfolios
i love telling stories to highlight a point or key concept - kids love stories & tend to remember the concept
A3: Also use so we can share with classes we skype to create books weather, animals, celebrations.
Low tech: manipulatives
High tech: on screen calculator, virtual manipulative, web simulations
CalcuScribe
IntelliKeys
Flashmaster
A4: I find that is so powerful in helping Ss learn at their own pace in Mathematics, also manipulatives
vast majority of my students tried to write everything verbatim. Took a long time to shake them off that
writing improves retention, learning to distill information, create resource for later review (in that order)
Instead of writing, draw a pic instead. We just did profile traits on characters and they drew and wrote.
Amazon Echo will read aloud many Kindle books, even if they are not Audible books.
Yes! Import 2 acknowledge that most S note-taking=driven by info T has chosen 4 the notes. S choice/voice? https://t.co/QgF8roilUl
What's the goal of students taking notes?
A3 and are all wonderful resources for & allow for differentiation
Can barely keep up with all of the amazing ideas in todayś .
a3: 1st..lots of discussion before writing. If you'talk' it..you can 'write it'. Ss can record chat & then write even self talk.
A3) I was, & am, a painfully slow write. I would have liked any app that allowed me to voice record or type. Much faster!
Will catch the second-half of today’s chat from Hong Kong. So what did I miss?
I use a tool by to informally assess if supports comprehension Can be a huge eye opener of info
A3: now added a 3rd party iOS keyboard to Co:Writer Universal app. https://t.co/0sgATU4Gh3
A3) used Co-writer so helpful for Ss who struggle w/ putting thoughts into writing & struggling spellers
A2 We need to help students understand that even where specific tool is onerous, may still need to master it for college today.
And it is easy to change: Involve edus in PD design, use data well, provide follow-up. Just a few!
Thanks. Celebrate some Chinese traditions. Loved going to Beijing. Ancestral roots!
Yesterday, I worked w/Level 4 school. All kids out of mainstream. Goal - engage learners. Inspiring staff.
dig deeper into SLA website, looks like much is already set before Ss get there. Choice can't be cosmetic.
A4 (cont) Additionally, is a powerful tool in any subject, esp math. I love building problems in w/ Ss
I encourage Ss to use what works best for them and offer suggestions such as take a pic on how to check-out ebooks.
As the official representative of every MS T on the planet, we say you're welcome. :)
A3: also helps love the new classblog because it can be shared. Ps can comment too and improves work.
How do we consider learning not as content but context of learning, tools, space and learner? https://t.co/KQkUiPl24x
that is a great tool for kids. Make groups for a book and have them share over the course of reading. Pose questions.
Yes to writing improving retention! https://t.co/uji5FWsggI
writing improves retention, learning to distill information, create resource for later review (in that order)
Genius Hr projects I gave no parameters. They had a GREAT time with the project part creating visuals.
I try to get my doodlers to doodle topic related pics in their notes. .
A2 one of these years, the cycle of traditional notes will end. Kids should be able to document key thoughts how they choose
is now trending in USA, ranking 2
some of us T's got trained in iBooks - struggling with finding the time to actually create
Will have to do this! Going to .
Would love to let them leave school and start an online degree in grade 11, but wife won't let me:(
...it's when it crosses over into caricatures of the T that it gets interesting.
Thank you for that resource on the dyslexia tools. Great to share w/ parents, too.
Lots of resources for Ss reading current events-give them choice and Ss note point of view/bias: https://t.co/MbNW3r5DQh
Q2: Give Ss bright paper and have them synthesize notes from comp or NB onto one sheet to use for assess
. Notes will be obsolete once using to fullest potential by creating a collaborative interactive environment
I need to re think my planning for next week ! Arghhh too many fabulous tools being mentioned !
that would be the description of my morning. Preparing for trip to market. -28 C, feels like -42 C.
They'll remember that story and then connect back to the content, which is great!
Getting ss to do something else than the specific end (drawing for reading) is a powerfull motivator https://t.co/lxc5gP47HY
A3 Love collaborating on interdisciplinary edu to promote reading: local poet/teacher Walt Whitman https://t.co/PeABqd959p
Plenty of opps for students to consolidate their learning, but w/o hand cramps from PowerPoint notes.
A4: haven't taught math in years so I'm lurking on this one.
. I do this, and email them to students who are absent that day. https://t.co/nCdpwcYNBW
Google docs & google voice.
Take pictures of notes
A2 Fully expect that univs will learn from primary Ts & employers the importance of engaged learning.
YES! Love them as learning tools.
Including and using their will support ELLs. https://t.co/ih0O3BDQ2D
A3 Some eBooks in libraries with Destiny allow read-aloud.
A2) Give kids choices. I use ColorNote for my grocery list, EverNote for team notes, Notes on my iPad for running thoughts.
A4 Voice recognition programs (Dragon Naturally Speaking), recording devices
right? Hey sista! is in the house too on
Glad 2cthis Teresa! Currently battling w/being asked to write notes FOR students 'guided notes'
A3: Adding a voiceover to slide shows that contain text, can really help students with reading
hard to do with my kids & sports, but they will be doing dual-enrollment courses as jrs & seniors
Taking notes on ideas of collaborative partners...to organize thinking/learning, reorganize sequences. https://t.co/3t6v5Fduig
A2: The real question is why are kids still taking traditional notes? Have we not evolved our classrooms?
A3: I'm not reading teacher but I would use GHO and partner my Ss with a class to buddy read.
A4: No idea for Math…. but I will share what I learn with colleagues!
I will definitely need to check that out! Hi-Lo is so hard to find.
I also post these to my Google Classroom, so Ss always have access. https://t.co/UCJM81tcxW
. I do this, and email them to students who are absent that day. https://t.co/nCdpwcYNBW
Google docs & google voice.
Take pictures of notes
Just curious. Is the expectation that all Ss can only use Cornell notes in all subjects?
A4: technology supports all learners in all subject areas. There's an APP for that.
A2 teach the info in class - highlight what they need to write down. Quality notes not quantity
whatever app gets the students to love to write because they choose to write... gets my vote
Agree.. trying to work with Eng Ts and had the same challenge. Thinking it’ll end up being a summer R & D project.
is representing! Good morning peeps!
word predictability is so helpful and leads Ss to an understanding of proper structure
Cornell notes can be great for this reason - Ts may decide key terms, but Ss decide what they want to write
I go with "optional homework." "Here's what I'm doing tomorrow, if you could do XX it's be great." They usually do more.
Thanks so much for sharing 😃
Guys, your thoughts on Teachers writing out/producing 'guided notes' for Ss?
Keith from NJ HS Educator here for a bit GM All
Yes. Agreed and those are not examples of traditional note-taking. Those are meaningful.
A2 Instead of complete notes,
for learning, want students to read slowly,
to respond to thoughtful deeply engaging questions.
my Ss always taking notes! highlighting, drawing, interactive notebooks, love stick notes! Moveable notes! https://t.co/ujLPnxIIVT
my Ss rarely take "notes" because we're always "doing". Notes seems to equal lecture in my mind & I'm not a big lecturer
I also like this--teaching Ss "note-taking" is a lifelong skill. Learning how and when goes beyond school. https://t.co/RsTKYKEe82
A2) Give kids choices. I use ColorNote for my grocery list, EverNote for team notes, Notes on my iPad for running thoughts.
At a young age, Ss need to have the chance to have more visuals. TouchMath is great!
I think it's an extra processing opp. Especially w/ handwritten, Ss process info ≥3 times instead of 1
. A3 It's important that Ts model multiple ways of note taking, not just traditional.
A2: In terms of taking notes, it is so important for students to be able to form their own definitions of word
Accèss is key! for Ss to refer back to and for Ts, Ps and support staff!
Accèss is key! for Ss to refer back to and for Ts, Ps and support staff!
Doesn't that make tomorrow tricky?
A3: and there is a way to google search that will tailor search results by three levels.
A3 encourage using voiceover on devices when struggling with words. Audio text books-not replace/go along with.
1/I agree. I killed "notes" years ago. We've got collections, clips, and critical questions/thoughts.
A4 1st of all, making math less about taking "the test" is far more critical than any tech. Discussions w/real connections!
and yes that is from the unicorn farm
I had a S who took notes with doodles. Very effective for her & the other Ss who saw them. Multiple paths matter
Right? At a conference/meeting when there's a key slide/image, watch the phones come out. :)
A4 Converting calculations to speech through a talking calculator or app can sometimes help.
Yes I always try to purchase audio, eBook and print of titles used in classroom https://t.co/hsEjF4AcKq
Including and using their will support ELLs. https://t.co/ih0O3BDQ2D
A3 Some eBooks in libraries with Destiny allow read-aloud.
Absolutely. Targeting all learning styles.
Choices are key to real buy in https://t.co/Vb8r2069Ke
A2) Give kids choices. I use ColorNote for my grocery list, EverNote for team notes, Notes on my iPad for running thoughts.
when they come to me from 6th grade, I ask, how did you do X in 6th grade? Helps me see and address any differences in technique.
2/I used to think I was a disaster bc my notes are sketches, quotes, outside connections.Nope-that's success thinking
A4: As someone who struggled with mild dyslexia in math, I have found this to be an excellent resource: https://t.co/stCt15xA64
I agree. If Ss have difficulty then just let them speak or record session in class.
4) Does any know of wonderful PD or conferences covering dyslexia, dysgraphia, & especially dyscalculia?
EXACTLY! We don't write everything down anymore as adults.
Lol YES, &those Gately's rmyinspo!
. has 4 doc camera give aways on Apr 16! How cool!!
a3: gr8 note taking tool 4 all r Ss highlight or use sticky notes. Rule = try for 1 sentence or 5 words 4 whole page!
been wanting to start using quizizz - how do Ss like it?
I had kids that hated Cornell. They wanted to sketch & record. Notes are personal and should be https://t.co/iqnPsBE1We
Cornell notes can be great for this reason - Ts may decide key terms, but Ss decide what they want to write
Not at all. Students come to the table prepared, having thought deeper. I get memes, news clips, thoughts
A4: simple tools like allow Ss to pause, rewind, and re-watch their teacher as many times as needed
A4: I am an ELA mind 100%! Not much help in math.... LOL
A4: It is possible to write feedback to students and also record the comments too. Helps students understand
I hope not. Implement different graphic organizers and model MANY ways of note taking
Have to run; thanks for the GREAT ideas! Will be writing about some of them!!
Q5: What are ways you allow students to differentiate they way they show their understand and knowledge?
Visual depictions of learning build neurologic redundancies...great for retention! https://t.co/ztkp6OvU7y
A2: If we're going to truly differentiate note taking, Ss need exposure to an array of methods to choose. https://t.co/9hATUUU96G
A2 back channel for note taking!
Q5: What are ways you allow students to differentiate they way they show their understand and knowledge?
The sharing of resources + information this morning on shows the power of using social media as a tool for collaborative learning.
I strongly believe we're not helping any Ss by giving them pages of homework in math every night, esp. those who struggle!
No kidding! They have all the big pub texts incl. and other hi-lo specialists.
We learn to listen first, then speak, read and write - so we should consider this with tech use
why aren't the notes pushed out to ss? Makes no sense to do work twice
Sometimes regular Ed tchrs don't recognize that there are other ways for student to take notes. Tool 4 right reasons.
Giving options, pitching to student interest, makes them want to work. They give themselves HW, hahaha!
In your experience as a learner of English (& perhaps languages,) what do you suggest for a world language course?
QUESTION 5
https://t.co/srBmvKDYh4
Q5: What are ways you allow students to differentiate they way they show their understand and knowledge?
Yeah, but what about the ones that didn't?
A5 we completely free flow. Student pick proj and tools. If they wan to get deeper into one proj we let them skip next
Nothing specific but ones like have sessions that cover it along with
a5 - help the kids build a library of ways to share & show their learning - tech tools, video, presentation tools, etc
A4 One of the best reasons for Edus to be on social media is to share great strategies and tools such as these
A2 Many Ts/profs provide notes for students so they can focus on reading slowly for engaged thinking. Here notes/Qs/responses great.
A5: Choice menus to demonstrate mastery using different learning styles.
A4: Math is part of STEM - Bring it alive with technology - Open your classrom to the world.
A4: I need to read all these responses! I'm brave enough to say I don't know...YET.
I have abt 100 tabs open... thnx for all the great resources
I don't know about this but I will definitely look into it. This could be very cool https://t.co/8hi7BXXhqH
A4: simple tools like allow Ss to pause, rewind, and re-watch their teacher as many times as needed
Hey why we need back! https://t.co/z6ZRD7BrMO
4) Does any know of wonderful PD or conferences covering dyslexia, dysgraphia, & especially dyscalculia?
A5: Stuchoice is so important to engagement and success. Some Ss show me through building, suite, dig reading
Alison Walton from Washington state joining in!
A5 as much choice as possible in terms of "assignments" andassessment, esp with long-term projects/passion projects
A5) Menus, done well, are a great way to diff. the product piece, esp. for GT learners. Blogs are one of my fave ways.
A5: Make collaborative slide show!
A5 Explore strategies in project based learning allow the unique needs of students to be met. Create CHOICES.Let them have a voice
I appreciate admins want T's to use own tools, but in HS when Ss have up 2 8 different T's, can be overwhelming
Totally agree. So many Tech tools to use why make them suffer!
I'm super interested in finding ways to better serve French learners with dyslexia.
https://t.co/pLoIqOnZ3o
I also like this--teaching Ss "note-taking" is a lifelong skill. Learning how and when goes beyond school. https://t.co/RsTKYKEe82
A2) Give kids choices. I use ColorNote for my grocery list, EverNote for team notes, Notes on my iPad for running thoughts.
Thanks for the resource. Invaluable tip!
A4: Many implementation ideas related to UDL-Mulitple Means of Rep, Action&Exp, Engagement. https://t.co/TZLOa48lVC
A5: I always thought it helped to have a menu of suggested technologies as a starting point.
A2. I use as tool for self reflection and "thought" taking. Save all to personal vox folder. Go back later. No autocorrect!
A2: Note taking is idiosyncratic to the user. Learn a variety of strategies including nonlinguistic, and pick what works for them.
Have for Ss for years now. Having Chromebooks Read/Write is a great tool.
Yes! In blended learning teachers and students can provide feedback via video comments. https://t.co/5jlz3vGYsB
A4: It is possible to write feedback to students and also record the comments too. Helps students understand
Delivered a PD yest where 4 Ts spent a lot of neg energy on re-tstg 4mastery. Frustrating. is so hard to chg
A5: if we simply let them understand and know what they choose to, the question would be unnecessary!
A5 For social studies Ts, starting with the model, which has 5 different options for projects
No, we focus on 1 subject/year and try to build on it. Also I teach elem, so our CornellNotes are modified https://t.co/slCN9pn76S
Just curious. Is the expectation that all Ss can only use Cornell notes in all subjects?
A5 I often allow drawings or comic strips as answers if Ss are more comfortable. Still shows me they got the main ideas.
Great Have to get back to developing https://t.co/yiz5O8G6T1 new page: Recommended Resources for Ss, Ps, & Ts Send ur suggestions!
A5 Ss can show knowledge acquisition-digital (podcasts, videos) or writing, posters. Build on Ss strengths instead of weaknesses
A5: I've just mastered https://t.co/4ZMpOVNj3c . It's a super presentation mode that allows embedded videos tweets pic etc! 😊
A5: I've just mastered https://t.co/bWdyc9vWqP . It's a super presentation mode that allows embedded videos tweets pic etc! 😊
A5: class discussions, small group discussions, partner discussions
I appreciated how designed for this... S's could tag notes as private or shared-w/-class. Thoughtful.
A4: makes a great study guide tool to capture problems w/camera & screen record their problem-solving process
A4: makes a great study guide tool to capture problems w/camera & screen record their problem-solving process
Note-taking is so personal
Make an impact on lrn w
Exit assessment
self assessment
Purposeful grouping
Learning conversations
More teaching | Less grading
Really critical to have a whole school approach to using tech. Tricky! https://t.co/Hkx50l7qyG
I appreciate admins want T's to use own tools, but in HS when Ss have up 2 8 different T's, can be overwhelming
Its a very user friendly screen casting app. Provides a URL. Great for Ss explaining their learning too.
there is wisdom in that. Picture note taking helps Ss create meaning & boosts memory - I do both
A5 we work on fitting square pegs in round holes by making the round holes bigger
A5: Let the Ss show their own passion and learning through Genius Hour
A5: have Ss teach the class (So fun!)
These very ?s are why I wrote "Don't Sniff the Glue." We don't need to be dictators. We can be guides:) https://t.co/NJbfelMFx6
I used to incorporate "homework choice" Ss could pick one of three options and we would then discuss key themes.
STMath is great for students! Can be used K -12.
A5: Student voice and choice! Students need to own their learning. When we make room for that, achievement will follow!
A5 But Ss need to know that each option available to them is "equally hard," some kids aren't "getting away with" something easy
A5 in a guided math and guided reading model there is constant formative assessment, Ts really get to know their kids
Spot on. Practicing doing something wrong only makes you an expert at doing it wrong!
I love being able to set up Slides for Ss and share via Classroom to craft projects
A5. The school has to have autonomous learning environment that encourages thru activities like PBLs, centers, menus, etc.
You want to rethink notetaking? Have Ss "tweet" the most important concepts of their learning be it labs, projects, lecture...
also, tools like calculators make an important difference for my so (has dyscalculia)
With most PBL we allow S project choice.
Success in Choice in demos of mastery depends on having a task neutral rubric all understand going in.
A5: free choice from a menu created w S input. To dev multiple skills, sometimes limit/rotate options w S input from the menu
No problem. They join the discussion, listen, offer thoughts. Maybe next time they'll be facilitator.
Great online portfolio tool my Ss & I are trying out is
#4 videos 2 give students another shot at 'seeing' concept in action. Can be me, musical, another tchr - try 2 hit diff approaches.
Providing choice doesn't make this challenge worse, it actually makes it less likely.
could faculty choose a menu of acceptable tools that s can use in any subject?
A5. The school has to have autonomous learning environment that encourages Ss thru activities like PBLs, centers, menus, etc.
A5 we use project logs and ask them to answer our 3 learning questions. They can answer however they want
A5: Google chat (like a twitter chat) LOL (they had never done it before, hilarious)
A3 recently started using OneNote Learning Tools, focuses Ss attention, read back & dictation https://t.co/bJRfacJgZc
A4 Every minute, new resources are available! What a great age we're living in w tools for equity & justice. https://t.co/jYj5wtzovZ
A4: technology supports all learners in all subject areas. There's an APP for that.
A5: Remind S's what we are learning is important to everyone; Ask: how can you show the world what you know & why it matters?
Before I decide on a photographer, I like to see how well they photograph people of color.
The last thing you want is, "Use this technology in this way."
Tools like allow students to demo knowledge aside from basic text
Think of it as a fluid learning-teaching mastermind. In a student sense. I'm just the guide.
A5: I like using RAFT activities to show Ss understanding in content areas. So easy to differentiate too
In Jr. Hi I had to take all notes in outline form and the teacher graded them. Outlines don't work for me
A5: Teach them https://t.co/4ZMpOVNj3c . It's a super presentation mode that allows embedded videos tweets pic etc! 😊
A4 is a very useful tool for math & meeting individual Ss needs.
A5 You can't differentiate when you're still micro-assigning one-size fits all work. Rubrics w/multiple pathways work wonders
A5: Teach them https://t.co/3s3HzTZTmw . It's a super presentation mode that allows embedded videos tweets pic etc! 😊
Choice for choices sake is unwieldy and time consuming for Ts, choice for demo of mastery is essential for learning. Define mastery
A5. Let learners take on various roles. Different options for homework, sharing, reflecting. All important.
Agree! But most times inclusion is what drives differentiation in classroom.
A5: Clarity about goal 1st.If certain product is needed, then process differentiated. If process required then product can shift
A5: Ss like 2 create news show using GreenScreen app. Reason to read, reflect, write when creating a news segment.
A5: comments using Google docs, we can communicate at any time
A5: Personalize Ss learning: what Ss need. They will tell you!
A5: Most importantly, I check whether students can tell me what they understand by the feedback that has been given to them
What are your recommended resources for Ss, Ts, & Ps? Send suggestions!
Thanks for all the suggestions ! Will return to review tomorrow at work. Enjoy rest of your weekend everyone!
A5: Organizationally, they are often open to choose how they show learning as long as they include all requirements of the task.
Add to that - NOTES SHOULD NOT BE GRADED!

A5. Allow Ss to choice and voice in they way they demonstrate knowledge and mastery
agree- I see diminishing returns and counterproductivity if given too much
word. And sometimes don't use tech at all is an acceptable solution
It's a new paradigm: one where I give up my control and serve as a mentor while they dig and exchange.
But, sometimes it is okay for you to be the lead. Differentiated leadership requires it.
A5 PBA allowing students to create project on his/her level by his/her design, collaborative writing, slide show ideas
A5: Many Ts provide Ss with different options for a project product: paper, documentary, website, etc. Love it!
I am so glad you shared this.
A5 as important as varied assessment and assignments is varied content whenever possible within your curriculum
A5 My classes are largely discussion based, many Ss have dyslexia or written output issues. Plus less talking for this T
Thanks for joining in on the convo Robyn. Hope all is well.
And don’t forget showing what they know could include cardboard, playdoh, and other fun non-tech tools that also don’t involve text
Evernote may be a great tool to share at Empower Hour! https://t.co/CRjYYYMpYB
is an app I suggest to Ts. A copy of instructor's notes in Google drive allows voice annotation. https://t.co/tjpvShxVet
A2: interactive notebooks, and reading notebook using modified version of Cornell notes. Would love to try sketch noting.
A5: Flexibility & student choice in assignments, activities, & assessments
like to ask "how can this tech help you learn more" https://t.co/WOYFvZufPN
The last thing you want is, "Use this technology in this way."
A5: my students get to act things out! They love it! Poetry, singing, journaling...I let them use any method to show me they know!
A5 If learning about something more personally interesting gets S to the same place, they'll be more motivated to learn the content
A5: Give Ss access to different creativity & publishing tools & the flexibility/Choice to use them !
A5: Love this Q! This is where I'm eXPloring this year, Lots of & , esp w/ & for assment
We are speaking about differentiaion & the LD student, but we all learn differently. Differentiaion should be in every classroom.
A5: post-it notes (during book clubs)
would make sense but admins hesitant to tell T's they need to use this or that
A5: Give Ss choice in the way they show what they've learned. Record a video, podcast, draw a picture, create a scrapbook...
Choices should be ways for kids to bring evidence they have mastered learning, not "different things to do in class"
Notes should spark conversation
Yes! Key is choice! https://t.co/VnByNPCEy0
A5: Give Ss choice in the way they show what they've learned. Record a video, podcast, draw a picture, create a scrapbook...
You can still do it! We provide free blogs for you to use :)
Exactly, I talk about needing to know themselves as learners.
what if they need to be out of our classroom skimming rocks on a pond?
q5 it depends. Try 2 hit MIs. However, Ss have 2 also hit the state test model so have experience w/format. https://t.co/pFjMAflDCR
Q5: What are ways you allow students to differentiate they way they show their understand and knowledge?
A5 challenge for us as Ts is to have a rubric/framework open-ended enough that we can see how that variation works for Ss
I think it's more about HOW the tech is used. Not a fan of categorizing apps by DOK.
A5: Ss & Ts work on self differentiation w/Meta Solutions PD team on Authenticated Learning https://t.co/5OTho5FOqg
Important to keep purpose in mind & allow Ss to create content that best suits their interests & abilities https://t.co/2lHu13iQkO
A5: Remind S's what we are learning is important to everyone; Ask: how can you show the world what you know & why it matters?
nope SAMR limits growth mindset in students and forces them toward a tech solution
Choice is everything. From the how of comprehension to the way of getting to that comprehension via tech tools. Boosts engagement
Have you used a "Menu" model? Ss chose from categories? https://t.co/VXkNuh8BvO
A5. Let learners take on various roles. Different options for homework, sharing, reflecting. All important.
Choices must be rigorous. Seen too many choice boards with lots of options for low rigor work.
I am SO glad I was woken up in time for this chat!
I would agree with you on that
RT : Find creative opportunities for our Ss to take notes. Learn new concepts Shift the Lift ...
Q5 Ss follow passions and self generate the inquiry and Ts provide them with listening speaking reading and writing choices to show
A5) Art, sculptures, iMovies & trailers, Prezis, songs, dance
If you want to make a tremendous difference in the lives of educators, turn them on to
A5: Students need to be given freedoms to follow their voice in the classroom-let them intergrate their learning into the teaching
A5 conversations with individuals and group discussions allow them to show they know the info in their own way
A5: Performance based assessments allow for choice, voice, & creativity
A5: I love using for students to show learning. is incredible too
I just did a modified project. LOVED it!
Unfortunately I'm presently not in the classroom, but soon I hope!
I would have to agree with Ross as well.
A5: Becomes tricky when a stdnt doesn't want to use tech at all. Can choose paper or tech, but there needs to be some balance.
Yes! these are all suggestions and possibilities, but its not about the tools its about the learner https://t.co/3qL60lUyyL
I think it's more about HOW the tech is used. Not a fan of categorizing apps by DOK.
I agree 100%. Using a opportunity or is a non-threatening assessment. https://t.co/djazvtYOLV
And don’t forget showing what they know could include cardboard, playdoh, and other fun non-tech tools that also don’t involve text
Is really easy! My 2nd grade Ss even make presentations to share with others.
Thank you, Vicki. This was a labor of love writing. I hope it's helpful:)
Sounds great. My problem with optional HW is "So it is worth doing or not?" If you know what I mean.

I used to give homework choice too. Ss LOVED it. It was funny how they differed on which was the easy one.
A5: Make sure that differentiation does not lea to avoiding particular skills that we should engage with from time to time

They LOVE post-it notes. LOL
A4 Change is hard. New times require new ways & offer new opportunities. Exciting, but fearful for many.
great point - I'm sure you supp this autonomy - Cornell notes shouldn't preclude recording ideas/sketching
ok being a newbie this is awesome thanks ..inspired
Keep talking about the topic of AT & meeting needs of diverse learners. Join us every Wed night @ 8PM Eastern for
Makes sense, focus now must be helping schools fund and implement steps to address helping whole child . https://t.co/lyFrLsxrHi
Always ask...Am I doing this because it's easier for me or because it's best for kids? Sometimes there is overlap. Sometimes not
Amen, the learner should always be the focus.
I'm excited to try it! Thanks for sharing!!
Grading projects for number of examples, frequency or coloring is a recipe for low level learning. Rubrics need to be about learnin
A5: Many paths to demonstrate mastery of learning targets vs a test per some arbitrary date on a calendar. Competency learning!
How about a balance of high & low tech and Ss choose best path for them?
Thanks for your interest! Can someone help Sarah?
We do a lot of talking. (they LOVE it!)
Really looking forward to a great day of learning! https://t.co/U32OLnHkGx
The BASD and are proud to host the event!
A3: Googling her now Maggie! Love what I'm seeing in urtweet. Continue to drop bombs on us u

A5: Becomes tricky when a stdnt doesn't want to use tech at all. Can choose paper or tech, but there needs to be some balance.
A5 different ways to respond are critical for stud but be sure rigor is there w/clear lrng targets so s can show understanding
I just saw some tweets from looked good. Are you here every saturday at 8 Eastern?
This applies in all subjects! If HW is assigned it should be application-based, not recall. https://t.co/0M0hl1thcK
I strongly believe we're not helping any Ss by giving them pages of homework in math every night, esp. those who struggle!
Always what is best for kids! Good point. https://t.co/0CKrIevoOz
Always ask...Am I doing this because it's easier for me or because it's best for kids? Sometimes there is overlap. Sometimes not

A5: Performance based assessments allow for choice, voice, & creativity
Hello all--late to join, but lurking
Super easy! It's drag and drop. You can remix the order of content which makes it "eye candy" for presentation. 😄
John Hattie's research supports the ineffectiveness of this too. https://t.co/x1OseULFU3 https://t.co/Pir69R6Cd3
I strongly believe we're not helping any Ss by giving them pages of homework in math every night, esp. those who struggle!

A4 Technology avail- audio text, record notes, voiceover on devices help explanations, others…
A4: Students need to be active "Global" learners - Let them explore learning beyond the classroom walls
A5 providing opportunities for students to screencast for creating support tutorials.
is right. StuDents should be empowered to make meaningful choices.
A5: Choice boards, Harkness disc/Socratic sem, cubing, tiering, use of tech.
Right on has to be abt kids not "me"! https://t.co/LiTfHa9kGg
Always ask...Am I doing this because it's easier for me or because it's best for kids? Sometimes there is overlap. Sometimes not
- I think we are all making the same point. Unite Ts to help the Ss. I think we are on the same page.
Good point. Put yourself in the shoes of your Ss and ask will i enjoy this? Can it be done better / differently ?
A5 tch Ss to give each other HIGH QUALITY feedback (compliments+suggestions).Their HQF=great way2 assess their und of criteria
Trying to absorb all of the incredible thoughts and resources in ! Love the convos and pushing thinking!
A5: when assigning a project: don't structure it in a way so that you receive a class of the same. Ss shouldn't be cookie cutters
The only real way to show you've mastered learning is to apply it. That's where the IMO "student choice" thing struggles
A5: I work with young Ss. best app - students can record what they do, take a picture /narrate and Ps can see it.
A5 menu for demonstrating ...Visual, oral, written, physical rep, artistic...focus on the communication, reflection, metacognition

well said! https://t.co/NO2c8xzrOS
Always ask...Am I doing this because it's easier for me or because it's best for kids? Sometimes there is overlap. Sometimes not
even though cellphones not allowed in school, I let them take pics of my board notes, but they have to copy into notebooks.
A5: Make sure how we differentiate involves challenge - kids can do, so let’s not always allow for the easy route
A5: Use what they love! Speak their language. Why not allow them to create a musical.ly video at home?
It's ok to disagree. I'm sure there's much more in common. My Ss write, just don't lecture w/1 hr of note taking.
has his in bins and is cool
Absolultely look at class account there are some videos and pics of them creating!
A6. UDL principles lie in offering all Ss choice 2 display mastery from lower 2 higher order concepts/activities on same objective

A6 UDL How students respond/demonstrate their knowledge/skills & how students are engaged in learning. Critical teacher reflection!
I also use 2 add audio to Google Slides. There is also google app: voice recorder.
That was an eye-opener for me in first years of teaching; realizing what I was "assigning" was boring.
That's why I am a big believer in PBL and using rubrics.
have you read "Quiet"? Great book about the power of introverts. Makes u think about how 2 involve & honor https://t.co/0G5prFQTFZ
A5 My classes are largely discussion based, many Ss have dyslexia or written output issues. Plus less talking for this T
decided to fix it. Never looked back. :)
Overwhelmed ? Read many of these ideas here: Using Technology to Engage Students With Learning Disabilities https://t.co/hANnabvMDJ
Keep encouraging Ss bc tech changes and Adaptive Tech is sometimes a bit slower, takes time 2catch up. Great when it works!
2nd graders using ? I love it! Now if I can just get my on board! Dare I say principal? 😊 https://t.co/X2U0tB8bNU
Is really easy! My 2nd grade Ss even make presentations to share with others.

A5: I work with young Ss. best app - students can record what they do, take a picture /narrate and Ps can see it.
Notes may just be the best low tech/no tech learning tool. Limitless possibilities for total participation.
Indeed! Rather than lots of homework, give lots of choice to scaffold their learning & demonstrate mastery.
That was a great book. I learned a lot about myself from that book. https://t.co/s4beeDxZr0

remember assessing Ss should be like teaching. Differentiate. Some may do well verbal, others written etc KNOW your kids. Choice!
I want to learn more about STMath.
Gr8 idea!!! Acting out involves it all...read speak, listen writing! https://t.co/l4rG30YG84
A5: my students get to act things out! They love it! Poetry, singing, journaling...I let them use any method to show me they know!
I haven't but I'll definitely check it out!
So TRUE! Is it a "who cares" assignment-if so ditch it!
Good morning Keith! Great to be in this convoy with you.
A6. With UDL it's about the Who, the What, and the Why of learning for all Ss.
UDL: Goals ,methods, materials, assessment. Without 1 you have none!!
me too ;) Got them all over my table / workstation :)
Me too! Facing the realities of your classroom is the first step to changing it. https://t.co/qVP8EZc1Hp
That was an eye-opener for me in first years of teaching; realizing what I was "assigning" was boring.
Love it! We had a student create a video for a final project last year. It was amazing!
I'll check it out after promise!
A6: so many ways to assess learning. Just ask the Ss. They must have a voice too.
Differentiate= Have Ss summarize learning in a 140 character tweet-obseverve how THEY choose to condense & hightlight salient info
A6. By focusing on brain-based learning, we can tie our strategies to what really works. That is why UDL has such potential.
Would highly recommend! My Ss love their session and working on the website!
"Know your kids!" That is the most important piece in all of this https://t.co/cTeT0YYmvV
remember assessing Ss should be like teaching. Differentiate. Some may do well verbal, others written etc KNOW your kids. Choice!
Currently have 7 tabs open waiting to be read & digested after . My prospects for productivity around the house is decreasing. :(
This is a huge challenge at univ level. Also highest rates suicide any demographic group US: Native youth. https://t.co/M3hLKcVTRo
A5: when a Ss asks can I use this, do it this way most of the time I'll say "yes"
Always tried to use S created rubrics. But, the more I did PBL the less I thought they were necessary.
Yeah. If you as the teacher can see how terrible it is, but keep using it?
I tell my son he has to draw so I can finish .
A5: As long as students meet the co-constructed success criteria I encourage them to show me their learning in any way they want
You're singing my song Lisa!
starting 2 teach literacy in . Getting Ss 2 think about symbols, color, text, images & how they impact understanding.
Yes! An Instagram feel but is safe and secure. Kids love it. My 2 5th grds get on even w/out an assignment. https://t.co/FlcCooVbON
A5: I work with young Ss. best app - students can record what they do, take a picture /narrate and Ps can see it.
. Students really grow and take off when redefinition can be met in the SAMR model
love the name Empower Hour!
See, I stopped just short of saying "then you are a terrible teacher." I'm learning. :)
A6: UDL allows all Ss to showcase what they learned, in whatever format they choose. Shifts to DI all the time.
So true... if we don't want to do it chances are they don't want to do it either.
I've been intrigued by the book because I have a daughter who is introverted
A5: Allow multiple ways to show understanding: speeches, pwrpoints, prezies, videos, writings, labs, experiments, project-boards...
Ss love recording themselves and then hearing it. I have 8th graders who I recorded in 4th. LOL They love it!
Out with the old in with the new :)
Ha! I just accepted that today may not be the day for house stuff.
See, Gwen I talk about "oooooh, optional homework," and you bring the big guns, hahahaha. It's why I want your files!
I believe that giving Tchrs and Ss choices makes learning individualized.
Promoting autonomy and agency can help students succeed beyond the classroom, which should be the goal.
Common learning experience? Common assessment tool? Common rubric of mastery? Which matters most to you?
And sometimes (not always) if we don't want to correct their assignments/projects
Yes! , especially in a competency-based framework - is a true game changer for S engagement & growth.
What a while ride this morning with SOOO much great tools/info to take and share
THE one and only Rafranz answers my 'guided notes' question so eloquently as only She can. TY!
I had a sneak peak at the SS version coming out this spring. Can't wait!
A6: Let students take charge of the learning - teachers guide them down the path while the students explore.
Thank you for a thoughtful and amazing chat this morning! Great way to start the day! Stay warm! https://t.co/NGPc5bDpN8
Issue is always budget where if not enuff using resource then it is cut.
Always serving but challenging people to better themselves at the same time
Thanks, This has been my prof growth model that allows my Ss to demonstrate their learning. After all, it's about Ss.
A6 UDL - Begin with all kids in mind & design the lesson with them in mind! vs design a lesson & then try to make it fit all kids
I can't stay in the conversation and download the apps fast enough!
Love this! It is great and so many uses. We now share among all Ss. One place for Ps to go.
Thanks for sharing. How are Cornell Notes modified at the elementary level?
I agree with this 100%! https://t.co/sqQMMk2sYd
I had kids that hated Cornell. They wanted to sketch & record. Notes are personal and should be https://t.co/iqnPsBE1We
Cornell notes can be great for this reason - Ts may decide key terms, but Ss decide what they want to write
A5b For an ecosystems project students produced such a variety: 3D models, Prezis, Minecraft worlds, PPs and even written reports.
awww thanks! We love using too! Learnt this week that we have travelled 1.2m Skype miles!!
we talk about it as procedural information and recall. Not bad, just not sufficient for preparing kids for life
How Emily Dickinson & Lorine Niedecker wrote poetry.

A6) The who, the what, the why should be the basis of lessons, focus is not mastery of tech or content, but mastery of learning
What a wild ride this morning with SOOO much great tools/info to take and share
we're trying to turn an enormous, lumbering district onto this model. Difficult.
Thanks for sharing this, . I was just about to ask what UDL is!
must read in world that elevates collaboration as verbal, highly interactive endeavor. Changed my thinking https://t.co/ncEkicFa4v
I've been intrigued by the book because I have a daughter who is introverted
A6: Build a UDL lesson/unit broad enough that ever child can access learning. All lessons/units? A lot of work! But over time...
1 of my fav things to do. Love talking to them.
This is "marketing." I ask myself "Would they/I choose to click on this?" If not, does it have value?
Hating that I missed another week of . Upper respiratory infection and meds have taken over. 🤒
Thanks for all the new tools to help my Ss take charge of their learning.
This is a must if using Chromebooks.

ahhhh that's great! I was hoping there would be one.
The more student-driven an activity is, the more the teacher has planned behind the scenes to make it successful
Fantastic! It's not an easy path to change, but when you do, you will never look back!
Thank you for being patient with my first chat. Enjoyed reading responses. See you next week
we have HS psych Ts using the standard version in classes
Sadly, I can confirm this from my 13 and 15 year old girls. https://t.co/QsX2CtQxQJ

the problem with that picture is the word exam, not the same
I tell you, they do far more than I'd assign. Last week i got some Rated Questionable political commentary, lol
A6: Wasn't familiar with UDL, but will read up on it. Looks like a big checklist w/research sources. To ensure edus on right track?
The best teachers are open to change and input from their peers.
Thanks to my co-authoer of Using Technology with Students with LD for guest moderating today https://t.co/vxhwZq2X32
Pls feel free to contact me. I am sharing with Ss, skype how I am learning braille.Challenging, yet doing it.They identify!
When teaching kids a finite skill- altogether can make sense- when learning to apply that skill- choices can make sense.
We have outstanding individual Ts leading the way. Seeing progress.
Wow so many ideas today! Thanks !!
Great team!

Mahalo for having such a great topic to improve education for those with learning disabilities.
I hope my "newbies" from last week's conference were able to join!
I learned a lot today! Thank you everyone!
A6 Build a unit/lesson broad enough & diverse enough that all students can access learning! Lots to plan, but build units over time
Wow! That's cool. My daughter wants online/ virtual HS because of this!
My web site was many links Ss can use
Classroom discussions on Mindset & Carol Dweck. Huge improvement eliminating barriers & past negative mssgs holding them back
Every is like a quick/effective PD over coffee (and in my pjs)...best way to learn! Thanks!

It is. I'm writing a piece now about marketing & education. Will share w you. Our job: sell this #$%$. :)
Sign of a great lots of open tabs and bookmarked reading to keep me busy! Thanks!
Our apps use OpenDyslexia font and have the easiest user interface available. Perfect for assisted learning https://t.co/uvXGMpYTce
Never give up! We are doing this for the kids!
We take basic template but will make paper wide ruled, Ss still ask questions and create reflection/summary https://t.co/i3qDKIizlW
Thanks for sharing. How are Cornell Notes modified at the elementary level?
Thanks and for a cranking it's been a while for me! 😘
Students would be better off reading some clear text and then writing what they remember.
Kids must be able to articulate their mastery and not be dependent on teacher comments. W/o this, choice and options suck time
Thank you, , and . Need coffee, advil, and a week to digest an hour's worth of learning!
Thank you everyone great chat
A5 Students need supportive tech:
1. they can/may use in college & at work,
2. or will build skills to no longer need the tool.
Thx to & for a great convo. Hope to see some people on Wed nights @ 8PM for

Absolutely, many need to know the purpose of it, why are we learning this, sustains their interest
A6. UDL =Flexibility representing information, flexibility how students show what they know, engaging&motivating tasks;CHOICE & AT

Cool! Flick it over when you're done. Look forward to it.
This is how my brain feels after an hour of Thanks to all for the thought-provoking discussions and ideas! https://t.co/xAG1hIa15d
Great ! Can't wait to "lurk" back through and see what I missed. Thanks for helping me do what is best for my Ss learning.
Seems like the most efficient way to do that would be to give students some detailed readings and questions.
Thanks for the , as always, guest & regular moderators! Now to start the day! Bon weekend, all!
It's been a good experience for the kids; seeing across that extro/intro spectrum. Eye opener.
Missed again, but looking forward to reading all of the AMAZING insights now! Thanks in advance!
Love the choices on this site
Thanks for lots to think about ! Stay warm NY/NJ!
Thanks and for waking me up this morning!
Yes. I will be there. Presenting on Monday. Dyslexia and Tech. Must give credit to for her inspiration.
Sometimes it’s small changes like the width of lined paper templates that make a big impact
I'm excited to see the "student" version, getting those ideas into younger grades.
That's not quite true. See the testing effect: https://t.co/yFwUxw6Ls1 Trying to access our memory improves retention.
Aw, feel better! I've got a cold too... trying not to wake everyone up with my coughing
I grew my PLN and my understanding through today's ! Great discussions!
Great chat as always! Happy Saturday & enjoy the long weekend!
THNX to for a great morning of learnin'
The paradigm from sage to guide happened long ago. It's about Ss growth & learning, not mine. Except as a better T.
A5 Students need supportive tech:
1. they can/may use in college & at work,
2. or will build skills to no longer need the tool.
Change mindset is so very important. Keeps S and T both engaged, motivated & on the educational cutting edge.
Thanks for a wonderful opportunity to learn!

Agreed. Rigid: My ego. "How can I serve you? What do YOU want to learn/do?" Marketing. Kids buy that. Changes lives.

One humanities teacher I know has students write what they remember about a topic for the first five minutes of every class.
