Love this time of day...spending all-important time with my friends! Happy Tuesday, everyone! Great topic this morning!
Good morning Christina from MD here. Love today's question!๐
Give the Phanatic a hug for me!!!
Good Morning Eric! How are you today?
Good morning . Woke up at 4 and couldnt fall back asleep.
I promote reading by modeling my own passion for books, authors, words. I'm relentless. Always trying to hook Ss, esp my nonreaders.
Good morning all friends. Loving the spring weather
oooh, no good. It's too early in the week for that.
Good morning friends! I c we all survived Monday! David MS Principal in VA here w/coffee & some music playing!
Morning ! Amy...tech coach from MD here.
. Let's go Mets! Susan from the Jersey Shore, ready for day 2 of PARCC Math.
When I see former students one of the first things I ask is "What are you reading?"
Good morning, !
Love that we are talking about reading this morning, !
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
We have DEAR every day. We talk about our favorite books. We read our favorite books. They are starting to really enjoy it.
Reading needs to be about the 'why'. what are are you doing before and after reading to draw connections?
As a WL teacher, I always have them read authentic texts- children's lit but authentic nonetheless!
Morning, Amy! Happy Tuesday.
I teach HS Bio. Created a reading corner in my room a la elem school-- comfy chairs, pillows, and my own sci related books
I try my best to get new books whenever possible. That builds excitement.
Good morning! Oona from NJ and I am very excited for today's topic! I'm also very sleepy so hope it wakes me up!
Make a space on your board to show your list of books read.
535 and it is rough! However, she loves her HS so it is a blessing. It has a performing arts academy so a long ride.
I'm always reading and I make sure my Ss see that. They are now in the habit of asking me about my books https://t.co/EFiRqv96ia
perfect! (and good morning!)
That's why I chose to read series aloud, and why I read during DEAR. So important.
We did and the energy for reading, voting and talking about books was amazing!
Good morning ! Sleepy, but awake enough to talk about reading!
Put the book you're currently reading, reading next, just read in your e-mail signature.
Hey everybody! 1 of the best teachers I know just joined in. Show her the love and give her a follow!
Excited I will be able to continue that w them as we graduate to MS togetther and will get to discuss YA, one of my favorite genres!
My former Ss still contact me (Instagram) to tell me what they're reading ๐ https://t.co/xScH5A5U78
When I see former students one of the first things I ask is "What are you reading?"
Good Morning, all! I enjo the "read it forward" idea. Read a book, sign the cover, pass it along to a student...repeat!
Good Morning friends! Connie from NY checking in!
. I love the Phanatic! Best. Mascot. Ever. (Sorry, Mr. Met.)
Morning! How are you today?
this question has you all over it.
If there's ever a day when there are a few minutes left at end of class, I put the kabosh on lining up at the door: talk IR books!!
for sure, !!! sorry about that ( PS love Tribes throw backs ) https://t.co/Vai4g6RjmR
The mets tore my tribe to pieces... Gotta love that balance of hitting and pitching
Many of my own students have been great promoters of a love of reading by leading book talks/promos.
I love this topic - I've got a bunch. I post by my door the book that I am currently reading
Modeling our love of reading for students is SO important!
Let them see us !

I promote reading by modeling my own passion for books, authors, words. I'm relentless. Always trying to hook Ss, esp my nonreaders.
That is definitely rough. Sounds worth it. HOpefully she gets to bed by 7:30 :)
Me too! And I try to give them a new book rec before the conversation ends.
Read aloud is everything to me. I get my best teaching done then for so very many things.
Good morning I think having well stocked classroom libraries helps - books need to be within easy reach.
Promote Luv of Reading-I'm a Science T but have 2 different bookshelves for S's to borrow from-1 w/ books, 1 w/magazines
Also, our librarian photographs Ts and Ss reading their favorite book and prints โreadโ posters to hang around the school
Read Aloud is a great time. I have students asking me for special chapter books now. 4th Qtr:)
Reading cant be about just getting info. Especially in the age of Google. As teachers we need to make it more meaningful.
Good morning and happy Tuesday to both of you! Will do!
I've had couches, beach chairs, and even a tent in mine https://t.co/ssDGxUXEWv
I teach HS Bio. Created a reading corner in my room a la elem school-- comfy chairs, pillows, and my own sci related books
This year Prin put a book case in each room told Ts to fill it up with what we want
Ensuring Ss get independent reading time for their choice books as well as guided reading and whole group interactive/shared daily!
I am a guest reader in classrooms & make sure we have a stocked book room and library for access so T have rich lit to share with S
well, it's officially spring - first allergy headache of the season (blech). But it kept me off the treadmill & here w =)
Done. Welcome ! https://t.co/twhB864vKX
Hey everybody! 1 of the best teachers I know just joined in. Show her the love and give her a follow!
Always model your love for reading. We have a school rdg. theme each year and raffle prizes (books, etc.) to readers.
Read-alouds ROCK as a way to promote a love of reading...especially when the reader really gets into character!
Ask yourself "What do REAL readers do?" Then do THAT w/ Ss. Skip the dioramas and projects. Talk to them
I have a friend who had a reading teepee when we first started teaching.
Conveying your own passion for reading comes first, like the oxygen on an airplane. Adults breathe first to help kids
Welcome to Christy! This is an amazing community! So glad you could join us!
I read to classes, esp when they r studying Greek Mythology. I always read the story of Pandora
Mornin' Lori just coming in after a nice 5 mile run outside!!!
Good morning! I thought I wasn't going to make it today, but here I am! ;)
Also just yesterday we came out with summer reading list, Ss get choice from wide variety of topics, titles & levels
that's great. What's this year's theme?
Always excited to see principals proclaiming this. https://t.co/NiK7oHV8cf
I am a guest reader in classrooms & make sure we have a stocked book room and library for access so T have rich lit to share with S
My Ss have choice to write a "reading ladder" reflection at the end of the year. Not required. I model: https://t.co/sHuxQCGthd
I'm going to be on the edge of my seat tonight...
So many great books at the middle school level! And the students love to talk about them!
After today's chat, check out this great blog post by on school-wide IR efforts for MS and HS: https://t.co/Rkm5cjfEuH
When I taught art I would try to incorporate a book was related to what we were learning about in class.
I have a well stocked library and I know my Ss. I match them to books they will like and enjoy.
My commitment to my Ss: we will find something for each to enjoy reading before graduation - 4 yrs of exploring, "25 p. test"ing
By highlighting readers & their recommendations. Giving them a voice about what they like 2 read & encourage them 2 share
Agree. I try to read all the new books coming in so that I can talk about them & recommend them to Ss
I'll live tweet ( if we are winning !!!!) https://t.co/NxI1R3pYyJ
I'm going to be on the edge of my seat tonight...
Space is such an important factor. Especially on the HS level. We need to encourage more of this in non-ELA rooms.
I love this-I want to be a guest reader!!! I love reading children's books & using all sorts of voices and animation
Welcome to the best PLC around!
Model, display, have literary conversations....lots of ways to encourage a love of reading!
When my Ss write book reviews or papers, I post them to Twitter and ask authors to comment. Have heard from
so good - Ss need to see Ts read and enjoy reading - not just for learning but for entertainment too
Awesome! I fill my class book shelves w/ a wide array-mostly from my home/son's library-also magazines!
I read The Giver 2 summers ago and entered contest & won! Got to go to movie premiere in NYC! Told Ss reading DOES take u places
yes across all curriculum https://t.co/fzVm6Vkt1c
Space is such an important factor. Especially on the HS level. We need to encourage more of this in non-ELA rooms.
We tweet at authors of read aloud books. Ss feel famous when they are tweeted back at.
Indeed. Ss also need to be given time to absorb/reflect the content they read - especially technical info for science/math.
I read aloud to my first grs every day. And yes, I do voices, wave my hands, vary my inflection, etc. A performance!
Our librarian posts book talks written by Ss outside the library
You promote a love of reading by constantly sharing books with your Ss, getting them excited, having books in the classroom helps
Letting Ss choose what they read is important: books, comics, articles, blogs, instructions...we have to meet them where they are.
Reading relayed stories aloud & getting Ss to enjoy the story is key. Need to do it more often, add in some poetry too.
Our middle school had a March Madness playoff bracket with books. That was cool!
Wow! That's so neat Christina! Lucky you!
A good book recommendation is like a blind date, you need to know the reader and you need to know books. 1/2
I have this on my calendar for next yr - we had the energy but really needed more planning for its success
If Ss are loving a book, I celebrate & tweet author. Have heard back from authors like
Finding the perfect match can help build a love of reading 2/2
Morning Kimberly! How is FLA?
Gotta run early this morning. Thanks for the sharing of all of your ideas ! So cool how we promote a love of reading! Peace!
Reading needs to be seen as an active process. We do our own annotation strategy to help with that.
I love it when schools/classes do this! It gets the whole school community excited about books & reading! https://t.co/qz87mmYSk9
Our middle school had a March Madness playoff bracket with books. That was cool!
Got a grant and ordered about 30 books for a May madness that Ss will design. So fun! Books flying off shelves.
Been talking about loving choose your own adventure books & creating them with google slides. Check it out https://t.co/JPzCxLjJMZ
we have teachers have students tweet about their reading.Ss use also. It excites them as well assesses their reading concepts.
I love using the idea of creating promotions! I will have to add that to my Ss options. Thanks for a great idea. ๐๐
I read. A lot! Both for myself and also to know kid lit really well. Knowing the books to recommend is so imp to hooking readers!
We talk about what they like & I do use part of my budget to order their recommendations.
The problem with reading is that it is seen as passive. As teachers we need to combat that perception.
Great idea! https://t.co/x5PjXT8Iwk
Good Morning, all! I enjo the "read it forward" idea. Read a book, sign the cover, pass it along to a student...repeat!
I share info from articles that I find fascinating. Encourages Ss who are not lovers of fiction. Models a love of learning too.
Yes me too plus historical newspapers https://t.co/tmJp04qdIn
Awesome! I fill my class book shelves w/ a wide array-mostly from my home/son's library-also magazines!
Good morning, friends! Robin, 1st grade T here.
Books in the classroom are a must! Even if on loan from the library...big demand for the books you model to Ss. :)
The one done on the internet was fabulous. So very exciting for my 3rd graders! https://t.co/gkM8beGqbQ
I love it when schools/classes do this! It gets the whole school community excited about books & reading! https://t.co/qz87mmYSk9
Our middle school had a March Madness playoff bracket with books. That was cool!
That's a great idea! You should suggest that they use the hashtag-welcoming community-we love S's!
Definitely - we did away with reading logs after reading the Book Whisperer. Amazing increase in reading https://t.co/NybTcqWddM
I'll take any day - a little advil and the miles will wait until this afternoon
Yes! That's a great approach as well.
We have also done a "Read Around the World" to promote nonfiction, book trailers. Goal for next year: genre of the month.
Love that idea. When students know they are preforming for an audience - they take it up a notch!
I love getting invited to be a guest reader! Read aloud is one of my fav ways to model a love of reading. https://t.co/pbN8qqyU4a
I am a guest reader in classrooms & make sure we have a stocked book room and library for access so T have rich lit to share with S
I love the idea of historical newspapers!!!! Thanks for the idea Eric!
Book clubs are great to hook Ss, they get to choose their book and share with friends
in general HS space is a soapbox of mine. Kids get bigger, classes get smaller, nobody says anything about it.
T need to know their library and their Ss. Match them up! . (=lots of reading for me)
yes, I know I am lucky to have the space to do so! Bulletin boards are a good place to start with limited space
when we moved to NJ first game we took m daughter was Phanatic Birthday Vs.Mets at the Vet 1990
We write to authors all the time too - heard from One of my Ss got her precept in 365daysof wonder!!

That would be awesome w/Historical Fiction Month! Thanks, Eric!
I just hit up fill-a-bag sales at local libraries to get great book club texts on the cheap that Ss can mark up!
Love that! https://t.co/rL3IASbjTp
Our middle school had a March Madness playoff bracket with books. That was cool!
Yes. Lab rooms are something I have often been jealous of.

I think I need to do this! My goal for the year was 50 and I'm halfway there to quote Bon Jovi! :-)
Such a great book! I am listening to Echo now.
At the end of the day, whether it's factual or fiction to be reading something is what is important.
I love it. Plan for it all year. :)
Oh how I wish for my pic with him. Bucket list wish for sure:)
Yes I wished my whole school had done this too. Ever try OneBookOneSchool? https://t.co/WNYoXMartf

Check it out at school and then DM us if you have any questions! :)
Yes! Having a bulletin board of what the adults in the building are reading is fun way 2 start conversations for Ss and Ts
2nd grade. My only requirement is it has to be fun to read! Books that are boring/work are either too easy or too hard
Also, finding the idea of stamina in helped my students grow in ways I never considered.
As always... is one of my fav tools. Harnesses the power of social media!

I concur!!! Is there a chat specifically about good read aloud books?
Thanks! They can populate it all year and then they've got recommendations for summer. As Ts to do the same!
Time to get moving. I'm having a hard time dragging myself away - loved this topic!

I've started answering the Q: "But what will they do with it?" w "Enjoy it! Remember when Ss read for pleasure?"
I agree. I have had discussions with new teachers about how reading is one of the hardest things kids do.

I like that idea. We've talked about it, but haven't made it happen. How is participation?
I admire your commitment, and read your posts all the time. You are awesome examples teacher leaders! https://t.co/cb2xITr3ZY
Good morning - It's important make books exciting and fun. Give Ss choice and voice in their own reading. Reading = learning/growth
Still waiting for this w our 13 and 16 yo. ๐ Even waiting until book is read to see movie was not enough motivation
When I see a student read a book I ask about it, then I tell them what Iโm reading
Promote love of books by offering up great titles and by holding reading time sacred everyday. Kids need good choices
:( plus so much req'd for school leaves little time for leisure reading
I have a true love for reading and share that with Ss often. Also I read different books to them in the classroom.
It's what I call "the usual suspects" but about 14/50 staff members.
I model reading all the time. I talk up books, ask kids what they want in class library. I read what they do-7/8

Yes. Plus they seem to be visual learners (that's what I'm telling myself)- learning via | MORE: https://t.co/heXu8fVvS3
I redefine reading. "Read anything, everything!" And, I write. I tell them to write. I couldn't live w/o reading:)
. when do Ss first "stop" reading?? i would say 95% of my HS Ss "hate" reading

Bring non-fiction into science class. The human element brings deeper relevenacy to science & could exand their taste in reading.
I always tell my students (and teaching colleagues) about what I'm reading with as much passion as I can find. It can be infectious.
Tried a couple of those w/15yo, didn't finish any of them.
13 yo LOVES them! She just finished Smile and Sisters(?). Claims series is next
As middle level teacher, I read what they're reading..great way to connect and model love of reading!
Looking for model plagiarism and cheating policies for high schools reflecting 21st C shifts. Can you share yours?

my 16 yo says no too. Last one she read was BabyMouse, and it's probably still lost in the couch somewhere ๐ซ
I've seen grad classes being offered on SSR. It's great that colleges are teaching educators strategies to enforce this with ss.
Growth mindset alarm is going off! Can't reading interest both intensify/fade over time? What part's innate? https://t.co/7Pm00SnW9b
Some schools and Unis use programs like 'Turn It In' which scans document against the Internet. Still needs T decision
I have recently started reading and stocking my library with graphic novels. Ss love these!
Reading โฅ promoted by relentless patience: model copiously, read widely/regularly, share enthusiastically, emphasize choice always.
Define reading generously. While I believe books are great, I know many other fish swim in reading sea. https://t.co/NrUpmI8rJB
Cool! Thanks for sharing!
Wow. my feed is getting pounded with today :(
Encourage Ss to read widely, factual, fiction, news, blogs, etc.
Show them that they are a reader. Have them better understand their reading lives and habits.

Good morning Craig! I hope you have a great day!
Read alouds help me share love of reading and introduce authors to Ss
Leave a book at the end of the bed to read each night (might change it weekly).

me too! Or if it's on their desk, I'll pick it up and read the back cover, then ask them what they think
