Hi! Sonja Wright arriving late. A1 @DrMaryHoward knows which book I’m going to talk about, because I was gushing about it on Facebook #G2Great#ClearTheAir
A1: Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed. Such a great book with a message of hope and fighting against injustice, even in the most dire of circumstances. #G2Great
One book I have read recently is the book "Running with the Buffaloes" it's about a cross country team but it can teach us a lot about perseverance through difficult circumstances. #G2Great
Sara's book is AMAZING! Glad that it has resonated with you. She has such a heart for humanity. The book is full of resources and ideas and full of her heart. #G2Great
A1 I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez! The book shows how difficult it is for immigrant families who worry about losing their children if they go to college and break out of poverty and cultural norms! #g2great
Hi, Tessa Levitt, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, PD from WNY, just got the book: @SprksinTheDark and hope to finish it after I read @TaraMartinEDU Be Real #g2great
A1 It’s critical to model the value of ‘read it again’ in read-aloud AND encourage ‘read it again’ for students. The perfect book may not be the NEXT great book but a great book seed already planted. #G2Great
A1: Losers Bracket by Chris Crutcher was about foster family vs. Bio family. I loved the characters! Also SWING advanced reader (by Kwame Alexander and Mary Rand Hess) is just. So. Beautiful. Out October 2018. #g2great
Joined a bit law, but happy to be here! One book I absolutelyloved recently was Anger Is a Gift by @MarkDoesStuff. I cried, I laughed, and I marked passages to share with students. I’ll forever share it. #g2great

A2: #180Days by @pennykittle & @KellyGToGo provided me with a necessary nudge to dip into different notebook structure & reconsider my writing units. This is a book that has lingered in my heart for months. #G2Great
A2 #TLAP by @burgessdave and #LearnLAP by @PaulSolarz both challenged me to think about teaching and learning in a totally new way. I challenged my own thinking and redesigned my expectations. #g2great
A2: Being the Change by @SaraKAhmed. I tend to shy away from conversations that may be controversial or political. Sara gave me the courage to gently lead Ss to these conversations. #g2great
A2 Definitely Literacy Essentials by Regie Routman because she focuses our sights on what is truly most essential in our teaching @regieroutman#G2Great
A1 Also just finished Kristan Higgins' book "Good Luck with That" that addresses women and the fight with weight, body image, self-acceptance, and friendship.
#G2Great
Fair isn't always equal @rickwormeli2 ALL educators must read ..... help you question your assumptions abt learning and grading practices #G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A1: When Women Were Birds, Terry Tempest Williams - it was suggested to me because of its lyrical feel. Extraordinarily beautiful, fascinating detail, deep thoughts. Much haunting metaphor. #G2great
A2: #BeingTheChange by @SaraKAhmed has quickly become a favorite, one I've recommended to many colleagues. Sara's book has strengthened my thinking about those first few weeks of school, and the need for building capacity for deep thinking during that time. #G2Great
We’re already trending on #G2Great - a perfect reminder how dedicated teachers really are. I mean really, where else would you find professionals willing to learn on their own time on a Thursday night? ❤️
A1. To Know and Nurture a Reader by Kari Yates and Christina Nosek. This book is written for literacy but I am going to use the fabulous advice in conferring with my preservice teachers on lesson plans, etc! #G2great
A2 I can’t wait for Dave Stuart’s new book to arrive: These 6 Things: How to Focus Your Teaching on What Matters Most. TY for rec @vrkimmelhttps://t.co/NHyRCR0KCk#G2Great
A2: Kids 1st From Day One - It pushed me to think about student choice in an authentic way in all aspects of the school day. Choice is often done superficially. #G2Great
A2: The last book that challenged my thinking and changed me was Disrupting Thinking. I choose to use my academic reading time on authors I align with so I am not really "challenged" but more uplifted. Currently reading 180 days and A Novel Approach. Love both #G2Great

Same. I had to put it down a few times in public places (i.e. when traveling on a plane) because I was just beside myself and uncontrollably crying. #g2great
A2 one book that really got me thinking was the book Holler if you Hear Me. Many great ideas of ways to engage at risk students, but many of the ideas in the book could be difficult to implement simply due to budgets. Sad but true. #G2Great

A2 I'm almost finished with @davestuartjr These 6 Things. It is amazing! I'm also finishing up Troublmakers by @CarlaShalaby So excited about all that I'm learning. #g2great
One professional title I’m slowly reading is The Quickwrite Handbook by @LindaMRief. It’s challenging me because there are great pieces in it, and so I’ve been writing many of my own quickwrites. #G2Great
A1 The Someday Birds by @sallyjpla It was a window into a life that was very different from mine. Eye opening and touching. It was a wonderful read. #SparksInTheDark#g2great
One professional title I’m slowly reading is The Quickwrite Handbook by @LindaMRief. It’s challenging me because there are great pieces in it, and so I’ve been writing many of my own quickwrites. #G2Great
A2. Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning I'm fascinated with brain research in education and this is just another piece of the puzzle. #g2great
A2: Disrupting Thinking, Sparks in the Dark both made me think of what I'm doing that's right for the kids, and also more about what I need to change. Challenge is to CHANGE. #g2great
A2: The Book Whisperer challenged me to become a lead reader and strive to establish a culture of reading! Choice, access, and time to read are all central values! #G2great
A3. Books that do not mirror our experiences or background open up the world - new ideas, thoughts, and thinking is possible. Cause more questions. Cause more learning. Need more books. Need to talk to REAL people.
Great learning cycle to be in.
#G2Great
Q3 How do books with characters and/or ideas that do not mirror our experiences and background affect the instruction we bring to the classroom? Explain your thinking.
#G2Great#SparksInTheDark
Will have to check back later. Jet lag and I’m done in. My go to favorite my last few years on kindergarten Each
Kindness by Jaqueline Woodson. A book that I can’t say enough about Refugee by Adan Gratz. #g2great Looking forward to the books that have stolen your hearts.
A3 Books that go beyond our own life reality can broaden our reality and help us to appreciate lives we wouldn’t otherwise know. Books can provide an entry point to new understandings. #G2Great
A3 it is harder for Ss to make any kind of connection with characters/ideas that are experiencing things way in left field. It makes the Ts job a bit harder but still doable. Ts need to instruct around some of these topics and character situations that may be unfamiliar. #g2great
A3: They help us explore the "why" of understanding differences. They also deepen our empathy and that of our students. They give us chances to show ways people see/experience the world differently. #G2Great
A 2 The Innovators Mindset changed my thinking by raising my awareness of how test prep & our culture of teaching to tests stifles creativity & innovation. We need a nation of readers, writers, problem solvers who tap into the creativity & curiosity in their childhood. #g2great
A2 @davestuartjr book has challenged me in helping me to streamline some processes. Less really is better. @CarlaShalaby book is turning my world upside down. So much reflecting on my own as I read and changing some old thought patterns. Wow! #g2great
A3: Our reading lives our students' reading lives. They pick up on the implied signals we send. When our reading lives are diverse, our students sense that. By reading about characters whose experiences differ from ours, we are telling students that they matter. #G2Great
A2: Mathematical Mindset by @joboaler. I know we talk literacy here, but this book really took me back to being a struggling math student. Empathy for struggling kids transcends subjects. #g2great
A3: We NEED diverse books because I don't understand today's youth without them! I'm white, been married "forever," etc. and I never worry about the experiences of these characters I read about now. It's sad, but enlightening. I hope that my students see that I'm trying. #g2great
A3 books that dont represent our personal experiences allow us to learn about cultures outside of our own and can teach us about students that we may have. We just need to be careful as to not be blinded to diversity within groups, a book cant explain an entire group. #G2Great
Q3 How do books with characters and/or ideas that do not mirror our experiences and background affect the instruction we bring to the classroom? Explain your thinking.
#G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A3: Books help us live other lives through the experiences of the characters. Gives us empathy, perspective, and new ways of thinking about people, our world, and our ideals. #G2great
A3: They challenge us to look at our experiences from different points of views. This is important as teachers so that we really look at our students’ needs and wants and not impose our own experiences on them #G2Great
A2 Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Freire, The Dream Keepers by Ladson Billings, & Other People's Children by Delpit are a few books that helped me disrupt my privilege, deepen my understanding of culturally relevant pedagogy, & empower me to change my teaching practice. #g2great
A1. #GRA2018 Great read to inspire, educate, and bring to light much we take for granted about getting an education in America! Heavy topics: class, indentured servitude, feudism and ultimately freedom ❤️ #G2Great
A2: How to narrow this to just one?! I’ll say The Power of Moments, Chip & Dan Heath; not enough space to say all - simply, it’s a challenge to create extraordinary experiences w/ lasting impact. #G2Great
A2 I haven't read the book yet, because I don't have it, but @rickwormeli2 challenged my thinking about grading in the #HiveSummit I have been thinking about it for 2 weeks. Why do I grade certain things, do I need to change, what effect is it having. #g2great#SparksInTheDark
#G2Great A3 they teach empathy, they allow us to look at the world through a different lens, they take us to places we may never see firsthand, and we get to meet people who often change our perspective for the better
A2: I loved Fred Jones Tools For Teaching. It not only felt powerful and realistic for behavior management, but the tools were so down to earth I loved Coaching teachers with a true sense of reality! #G2Great
A3 it is harder for Ss to make any kind of connection with characters/ideas that are experiencing things way in left field. It makes the Ts job a bit harder but still doable. Ts need to instruct around some of these topics and character situations that may be unfamiliar. #g2great
A3 When we share books that do not mirror our experiences, we embrace the myriad of human experiences that bless our classrooms. That’s our responsibility both as professionals and HUMANS! #G2Great
A2: How to narrow this to just one?! I’ll say The Power of Moments, Chip & Dan Heath; not enough space to say all - simply, it’s a challenge to create extraordinary experiences w/ lasting impact. #G2Great
Actually, I find I can apply all kinds of things to my literacy teaching. It's good to get outside our sphere to broaden our horizons and make connections back to literacy. #G2great
A diverse collection of books will be windows and mirrors for our students. When they are windows, we gain an opportunity to learn from and empathize with others. #G2Great
A3 Been committed to reading my #ownvoices texts, am grateful for the insight into lives not similar to mine. New information, appreciation, understanding, but it's also uncovering hidden biases I didn't know existed in me. I need that and so desperately want to uncover. #g2great
A2 - Regie Routman's Literacy Essentials challenged me to take a closer look at equlity within education and to take action to ensure equal access to learning. #g2great@regieroutman
A3: @KellyGToGo challenged me to think about these moment as imaginative rehearsals. Thinking about chars/ideas in this way helped me to add diversity to the classroom in books and pedagogy. #g2great
A3. When I was an elementary teacher I used to tell my students that they could make new friends and travel to faraway and/or new places when they opened a book. That is especially true and a valuable reason for reading diverse books and modeling that for children! #G2great
I thought about this earlier, Andy. Imaginative rehearsals, yet seeing through someone else's eyes is a powerful moment while reading. Great minds :)
#G2Great
A3 Books that reflect all life experiences have the power to bring us all together in a way that shows deep respect and invites collective dialogue with others. #G2Great
Q4: Why should students, and we as adults, write about the things we read? How can we ensure that this writing is designed to truly deepen our thinking?
#G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A4. Writing about Reading allows the Rdr to have space to think, reflect, question & connect. Learning is not a straight line. It depends on the connections made.
A time to wonder about BIG ideas and not answer trivial Right/Wrong ?s. Explore WHY! What if? Wonder!
#g2Great
A3: When we validate experience through story, we are stating that it matters. Bringing all kinds of stories into the classroom validates the experiences of all people. #G2Great
A3 When we bring the "unrelatable" to our instruction, we 1) honor that, just because we are all in a room together, does not mean our experiences are similar 2) make space in your classroom for empathy, compassion, and openness
#G2Great
A4 writing is a great tool to deepen our thinking. Reading with pen in hand, like @TannyMcG says (also add some sketches to deepen more) We remember more of what we write with our hands, we remember more images than words. This is the essence of deep comprehension. #g2great
A4: My gifted Ss want to rush through and read everything they can get their hands on. This is a good thing, but I try to get them to slow down and write about their thinking to really hone in on themes and concepts. #g2great
A4 Writing is an extension of reading and the thinking this reading inspires. When we leave room for choice and let kids follow their own thinking and that of others around texts, deeper thinking follows. #G2Great
A4: You are only as good of a writer as you are a reader. You are what you read. So I try to read varying styles and information so that it affects the way that I write #G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A4: Writing helps us make sense of our thinking. We can unravel ideas about characters and themes as we write to discover more thinking. I love to focus on big ideas and see the connections students make b/t books and an overarching idea. #G2Great
I love the idea of #ownvoices text. I think it's so important to honor all voices but to be cautious to not own those voices but to recognize our bias and lack of knowledge, experience, or understanding. Sometimes it is not our story to tell. #G2Great
A3 When we bring the "unrelatable" to our instruction, we 1) honor that, just because we are all in a room together, does not mean our experiences are similar 2) make space in your classroom for empathy, compassion, and openness
#G2Great
A3: There are times they make me pause, either out of concern that I can not authentically convey the character or that I might offend someone. Reading Refugee I kept pronouncing a name wrong. An EA came to clarify as she sponsored Syrian refugees I was grateful #g2great
A4: When we write, we process info. We remember better, and we think more deeply. (Also, I write so I won't forget!) You can come back later and change your thinking, too! #g2great
A3 Books change us and shape us as thinkers. If we are open to the characters and ideas in the books we read, we will pass that thinking on to our Ss. #g2great
Q3 How do books with characters and/or ideas that do not mirror our experiences and background affect the instruction we bring to the classroom? Explain your thinking.
#G2Great#SparksInTheDark
I love the idea of #ownvoices text. I think it's so important to honor all voices but to be cautious to not own those voices but to recognize our bias and lack of knowledge, experience, or understanding. Sometimes it is not our story to tell. #G2Great
A4: Writing helps us make sense of our thinking. We can unravel ideas about characters and themes as we write to discover more thinking. I love to focus on big ideas and see the connections students make b/t books and an overarching idea. #G2Great
A4 the best way to write about your reading is to reflect on what you read and give your opinion on it. Summarizing may not do much, but putting yourself into the situation by giving your opinion will show deep thinking about what was discussed in the reading. #G2Great
A4: I believe that when this writing becomes personal (i.e. transaction) and we write about that connection, we deepen our awareness of the book and the messages about life within it. Making writing a habit also deepens our thinking. The more we write, the more we find. #G2Great
A4: If we are not engaged in writing we are simply consumers. The true beauty of this world is the unleashing of joy and creativity. This is pure in writing and allows us to build true genuine community through honest communication. #G2Great
A5 Writing about what we read helps us deepen our understanding. As long as we’re not asking kids to summarize, we can provide similar opportunities for our Ss. #g2great
Absolutely! And writing gives us a chance to process, to ponder, to rehearse, and to revise our thinking as we continuous construct new understanding when we read. #g2great
A4, part 2: I use Book, Head, Heart with my Ss to get them thinking deeply about the books they read. From @KyleneBeers and @BobProbst Disrupting Thinking. #G2Great
A4 Writing is a powerful way to deepen thinking but if we turn writing about reading into a narrow task, we demean both. Writing about texts must be designed to lift thinking higher, not simply report it. #G2Great
A3 When the main character is born w/out arms and doesn’t blink an eye to “figure things out” you know it’s a winner! Makes you take a step back and think about what’s going on in the minds of our Ss who face daily physical challenges.. plus a great mystery❤️#g2Great@MVE_Reads
A4: Writing about reading can allow readers to question, ponder, try out ideas, and collaborate with other readers. Of course prompt/response writing will not have this safe effect! #G2great
A4: I think of writing as a way to let my thoughts escape, otherwise they are just bouncing around. When I write about or am inspired to write because of what I read it helps me to connect, to think and to process a text so much more. #G2Great
A3: Sparking empathy - a chance to walk in someone else’s shoes. New insight, appreciation for others. A greater understanding of community, relationships, collective humanity. #G2Great
A4 We simply must relinquish control for writing that rises from reading. If we want to know their thinking, we have to create time space and opportunity that will beckon that thinking rather than drive it. #G2Great
Yes, Todd. That’s why kids need to read a lot and widely. This will help them find their writing voices. For adults, too. If I want to write a scholarly paper, then I need to read a few to get a good idea of what this genre is like. #g2great
A4 We can only write what we understand and imagine in our minds! Writing about our reading takes us deeply into a story and surprises us with thoughts we might not have even realized were in our hearts and minds! #g2great
A4: We write to learn, to process, and to understand. Always start with the heart of your why. When you understand your personal why it deepens your connections. #g2great
A3: Perspective... If we are not searching to understand others point of view we lose our ability to empathize and without that it is impossible to form strong relationships!#G2Great
A4: Writing helps us make sense of our thinking. We can unravel ideas about characters and themes as we write to discover more thinking. I love to focus on big ideas and see the connections students make b/t books and an overarching idea. #G2Great
Q5 What collaborative conversations have you had about a book you’ve read? How have these engaging conversations stretched your thinking in some way?
#G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A5. Adult book clubs.
Student lit - practice what Ss do.
Prof. book - grow in ideas together.
Choice books - talk/write on line.
Choices in how to communicate collaboratively! Padlet, google doc, sketches, progressions . . .
Love sharing/seeing collective learning.
#G2Great
A2 - Regie Routman's Literacy Essentials challenged me to take a closer look at equlity within education and to take action to ensure equal access to learning. #g2great@regieroutman
A4 I also love seeing the students writing - they jot and I can see their thinking and reasoning - love seeing their perspectives. Writing helps me see in their heads - and I hope when I share/model with my Ss, they can see the same. #g2great
A4 when you immerse yourself in a great read and write about it you “become” the characters/story and it imprints.. it’s like it becomes an experience that you remember ❤️ #g2Great
A4: Responding to reading through writing is how we weave what we’ve gained from the reading into our own story. The words inhale by reading and then exhale through writing become a part of our being. #G2great
A4 Writing is an extension of reading and the thinking this reading inspires. When we leave room for choice and let kids follow their own thinking and that of others around texts, deeper thinking follows. #G2Great
A4 Gonna' quote @davestuartjr here from his new book "Writing uncovers poor understanding. Writing clarifies thinking."
Two powerful reasons to write about the things we read. I can see clearly what's tricky for Ss and what hey understand well when they write. #g2great
Absolutely. Sharing our thinking through modeling and thinking aloud gives students something to stand on and hold onto as they navigate their own writing. #G2Great
A5: I have talked w/ colleagues about #BeingTheChange by @SaraKAhmed, a book that really stretched my thinking about bias, identity, community, & learning. These conversations made me redesign the first week of my school year. #G2Great
A5: I spend quite a bit of time finding others who will read books alongside me so that I can have those discussions to deeper my learning and also push me to see how others are digesting what we're both reading #G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A5 We underestimate the impact of book clubs, discussions, book advertisements and book talks. Making room for these collaborative exchanges across the learning day allow the thinking of one to stretch across readers. #G2Great
A5 so once a month @ssvincent@tannymcg and a few others of us gather for #CincySlowRead where we indulge in great books & great conversation about what we are reading. These conversations always allow for new thinking and sometimes even challenging of old thinking. #g2great
A4: We often do not know what we think about something until we talk it or write it; when we write, we get to layers of things deep within us that we didn’t even know were there. #G2Great
A5: I love sitting around talking after reading a book with friends. Also, our new staff is using PADLET for staff conversations/staff meetings where everyone can contribute even if they don't want to talk! #g2great
A4 By wtg about our rdg, we push ourselves to reflect process connect tell the story of our experience with the material. Authenticity is a must if thinking is going to go beyond retelling. Why are we sharing? Who are we sharing for? How can our writing start a convo?
#G2Great
A4 Writing along side Ss is a powerful way for them to see that reading and writing are connected. We also encourage our Ss to talk about their thoughts, using their writing as support. #g2great
A4 Writing about reading enriches our knowledge of language and vocabulary. We become critical of our reading and reflective as we create a written piece. It helps us develop our opinions about a text and even do some self discovery. #SparksInTheDark#g2great
A5 - there is a great thinking routine called micro lab that helps students be active participants in their sharing of books/thoughts/feelings. Love when they feel comfortable enough and start using evidence to prove their thinking. #g2great
A4: Written response to reading all comes down to a relationship with the text you’ve read. How did the book make you feel? How did it make you think? How did it change you? #G2Great
A5 bible studies are a great way to engage and discuss readings. Before college I did not have much experience, but after spending one year at a Christian school doing regular bible studies I learned so much very quickly. Always great to have a group to discuss readings. #G2Great
Removing stringent parameters sets writing free. But it doesn't happen because we remove those parameters. We have to model, share, let students know how we sort through ideas, give them chances to watch us wrestle with language in our own notebooks. #G2Great
A4 Writing is an extension of reading and the thinking this reading inspires. When we leave room for choice and let kids follow their own thinking and that of others around texts, deeper thinking follows. #G2Great
A4: Written response to reading all comes down to a relationship with the text you’ve read. How did the book make you feel? How did it make you think? How did it change you? #G2Great
A5 I love having conversation around books with my nieces in middle school and high school. It always amazes me that they can see things I never even considered. #G2Great
A5: My greatest collaborator @JWGilson gets to hear my book talking and idea tossing around 24/7 Lately it has been about 180 days but sometimes it is just about an article or some tweet trying to justify AR. She tends to hear about AR often... #g2great
A4. By articulating our thinking in writing (or speaking), we dig deeper into the text and therefore deepen our understanding and comprehension of a text. Critical in our literacy work!! #G2Great
A5 Perspective! My summer work folk & I had a lengthy group text abt an article dealing w/ point of theoretical physics without experimentation. The physics teachers brought content knowledge, I brought analytical reading skills & we all walked away w stronger ideas
#G2Great
A4: Responding to reading through writing is how we weave what we’ve gained from the reading into our own story. The words inhaled by reading and then exhaled through writing become a part of our being. #G2great
Yep. How does this relate to my life or my position in the world? What can I do to make things better? Who can I align myself with to make the world a better place for everyone. #g2great
A5: Our leadership team with @PrincipalTyson and @ndgambrell and many other @MooreTexans are constantly sharing books and ideas. Many of our books for our #booktalks came from our wonderful nurse @juli_bethL I am daily learning and growing from our reflective staff! #G2Great
A5 The beauty of collaborative conversations is we can merge so many unique perspectives around the same text. We all grow when we open a door to multiple ways of seeing the same text. #G2Great
A5 I am part of an amazing book club. I love to discuss what I read--it's like sharing a gift with friends. I bring that same enthusiasm to my Ss. Connecting through stories is one of the highlights of my day. #g2great
A5: I just had a book club meeting with upper elementary students in my neighborhood and I was amazed at the things they picked up on that I missed. A great reminder that reading should not be a solo process! #G2great
A5 I also often have collab convos around articles from FB or social media - each time someone knows something I didn't or brings a perspective I hadn't thought about!
#G2Great
A5: I could not stop talking about #SparksInTheDark with a colleague this summer. It resonates with everything I believe. I love it when a book has that kind of impact! #G2Great
Q6 Difficult conversations around texts can help “disturb the universe” of education in a positive way. Respond to that statement and include an example of this professional disruption.
#G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A5. I am in a professional book group that is discussing “To Know and Nurture a Reader” by Kari Yates and Christina Nosek. The conversations are rich and provide new ways of looking and engaging with the content! I wish I could do it with all my professional reading! #G2Great
A6 Difficult conversations around texts can be uncomfortable but it is within that discomfort that real opportunities reside. We owe those opportunities to ourselves and to our students. #G2Great
A6: Talking about texts gives us leverage as we work w/ kids. As we examine bias. As we work to understand students of all backgrounds. But these texts must give us something to hold onto as we continue our work. They must deepen our awareness & nudge us forward. #G2Great
A6 Ts like @kylenebeers@bobprobst and @DrMaryHoward are hard to argue against when talking about balance vs skills. Love to pull out the books as well and give them some air time. Always fighting for Ss needs 1st checking my degree at the door. #G2Great
A5 I also think these are about modeling that in reading (and writing even), there is NO ANSWER. It is the process and the thinking that matter, not some arbitrary end result!

A5 Started reading Happy Teachers Change the World by @thichnhathanh I was struggling with parts of it. My SIL is also reading it and after talking to him I realized I was trying too hard to transfer these mindfulness skills to Ss. Need to apply to me only right now #g2great
A5 I also think these are about modeling that in reading (and writing even), there is NO ANSWER. It is the process and the thinking that matter, not some arbitrary end result!
#G2Great
A6 I say all the time that conversations don't get good until someone disagrees. When everyone agrees you're just confirming your ideas & they aren't growing. Those difficult conversations push you to analyze/reframe/support your ideas by considering others thoughts
#G2Great
A6: We had some great conversation with our staff using strong quotes from #KidsDeserveIt thankful for @PrincipalTyson to continue to motivate our staff to grow around meeting a wide range of needs for our Ss with @TechNinjaTodd and @mradamwelcome work #G2Great
A6: Introducing teachers to Disrupting Thinking was great because it helped them adjust their practices and some even quit using AR and we all know that is the greatest gift of all. #g2great
A6 We live in a world where “disturbing the universe” is both our right and our responsibility. We can plant seeds for new understandings when we allow deeper conversations to rise from the books. #G2Great
A6. The disruption “forces” participants to consider their thoughts and beliefs in relation to others’ thoughts and beliefs. The very act of debate, conversation, persuasion, consideration increases comprehension & more importantly helps develop understanding of others.#g2great
A5 Had a great chat last night with #theedcollab about the YA book Marrow Thieves by @cherie_dimaline That book is AMAZING and the conversation last night gave me so much more to think about that I had missed. Edupeers are the best thing in my professional life #g2great
Are you doing the @ncte_CEL Book Club on Facebook? #CELChat members are reading and discussing virtually this week and next! Great conversation! #g2great
A6: Disturbing the universe is a daunting task, but it is something that we are called to do. A reliance on scripts and programs demeans our work and promotes limited thinking. We can do better. We can light a spark for change. We can be the change. #G2Great#Revolution
A6 We can’t invite book conversations that “disrupt” unless we ensure student access to books that have the potential to invite disruption. The books we bring to the thinking table are a gift we give students. #G2Great
Q5: Have shared @ruth_ayres ‘ Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers w colleagues; we knew about power of writing as “soul-healing” but not that it can help children’s brains heal from neglect, trauma... implemented the book in our summer teacher writing workshop #G2Great
Q7 How can the reading and writing we do be used to promote change in our world? Why is this such an important component in the academic and social lives of students?
#G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A7. If one goal of reading is to change the Rdr, advocacy or call to action should be the result.
DO something!
Talk to more folks.
Question more.
Then make a plan.
How can you create change?
#G2Great
A 6 Anytime a discussion takes you out of your comfort zone! An example is discussing the benefits of students choosing books to read & teachers not assigning a book! Yesterday, I suggested to high school Ts to include ind. reading along side of teaching required texts. #g2great
A6 Hard a rousing convo with a colleague a few years ago after we'd both read Wolf Hollow by @LaurenWolkBooks I LOVED the book and it prompted a major career decision. My friend could not understand why it had such a profound impact.on me. Great convo new insights 4 me #g2great
A7: I love what @AngelaMaiers says..."Find first what breaks their heart, and start there". I think that's so true. Literature can connect people in profoundly deep ways and start a ripple that leads to great conversation and change. #G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A7: Students should be reading the world (through books) and writing to understand, ask questions, and encourage others. We want students to act now. We need students to use their reading/writing lives as places to grow rich thinking. They are our future. #G2Great
A7 We can change the world when we bathe kids in the books and conversations that allow them to see change in our world through the characters/events. Books have the power to touch us and inspire world change. #G2Great
A7 start a blog! @ssvincent and I are trying to change stereotypes through our blog. Ts have a lot of power, writing about what they’ve read and coming together to collaborate can be a great tool to bring balance to our seemingly broken education system here in USA #G2Great
If we don’t have these conversations how do we know what they’re thinking; how they’re understanding the world they live in. (quick pop in and saw your tweet,Todd) #g2Great
Join Cincy-area teachers for an hour of reading & relaxation! Bring any book. We meet in the lobby of the historic Mariemont Inn from 6:30-7:30 pm. Four dates for this school year: 9/4, 11/20, 2/27, 4/25. #CincySlowRead#G2Great
A6: AR levels, for example, don't give the theme or deeper issues of a book. I saw Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds was a K-2 reading level! Are you kidding me? What people don't know HURT them! We educators MUST bring up issues and help to solve problems! #g2great
A7: There is not much that is more personal or powerful than someones writing. If we are energizing that writing with texts that challenge or change their thinking we are changing the world. #G2Great
A6 I have had great conversations around Troublemakers @CarlaShalaby This book has helped frame conversations that will carry us into this new school year. #g2great
A6: We are typically challenged by texts because the cause us to think outside of our comfort zone. These spaces are usually great places to spend time in because they cause us to question, to consider and, in some cases, defend our position. #g2great
I worry, too, about the debates on the horizon as some would have us once again become phonics-centric, forgetting all the compelling research that would have us seek a more comprehensive approach. #G2Great
A7 we need our Ss to see the importance of writing and find ways to connect what we are doing in the classroom to show them how it can be used in the real world. In a world where tech is increasing, we should combine writing and tech in our classrooms and lessons #G2Great
Sharing the reading and writing we do with students and fellow teachers brings awareness where there once was none. It opens doors for thought, conversation, and change. It paves the way for growth. #g2great
I couldn’t agree more Judy. I have a feeling that this battle is going to get worse before it gets better so we all have to be hyper-vigilent and speak us as you did here! #G2Great
I worry, too, about the debates on the horizon as some would have us once again become phonics-centric, forgetting all the compelling research that would have us seek a more comprehensive approach. #G2Great
A7 When we teach students how to see something to address, take a supported stance, and start a conversation, we are teaching them to take action. And this world needs as much "taking action" as it can get!
#G2Great
A7 We use reading and writing in responsive and responsible ways and avoid reducing them to a shallow tasks or question interrogations. Our actions speak louder than our words. #G2Great
True, but I don't think Ss have to be reading the same "texts" I read when I was in school. There is ZERO choice in many schools & that didn't work for me when I was in HS!
#G2Great
A7 we need our Ss to see the importance of writing and find ways to connect what we are doing in the classroom to show them how it can be used in the real world. In a world where tech is increasing, we should combine writing and tech in our classrooms and lessons #G2Great
A7: Allow students to find their passions and read about topics that move them and make them question why things are the way they are. These questions can lead to explorations towards positive changes, however small, they can make #G2great
A7 So many amazing books are being written, stores being told. These need to be shared and a part of the ways we connect with one another. There are also great articles being written by Ts engaging w/ Ss, learning from Ss. #g2great
A7: When we walk in someone else’s shoes and live there for a while we come to understand their perspective. It helps us learn to appreciate and advocate for many more situations. #g2great
A7 Books are a stepping stone to change we hope to see in the world and afford conversations that can lead to new thinking and even action. Teachers Pay Teachers will NEVER inspire that change. #G2Great
A7: Reading and writing can help us discover the human connection and the value of seeing the world through others’eyes. Humanity is built on story, and we can help our students become those who shape our future’s story. Let’s make it a good one! #G2great
A7: Without a steady diet of books one becomes frail and fraught for wisdom. Subtract this consumption and ones ability to communicate through writing will be poor. Ss writing powerfully will impact others for generations. This impact has true power for systemic change #g2great
I may have taken the question slightly differently, I'm just trying to say that there are different ways that we can teach material to make it more engaging for the Ss #G2Great
Q8 What is one book, suggestion or idea shared on #G2Great tonight that piqued your interest, made you think, or inspired you? How will you use this as a source of change?
#G2Great#SparksInTheDark
A7 reading and writing are stories and stories are how we make meaning of our world and share it with others. Stories give us hope, connection and possibility. #g2great
A8 these are my favorite types of questions, I cannot wait to see what everyone discusses with this one! I am so excited about being inspired and challenging/changing my thinking! #G2Great
A8 I can’t wait to revisit this chat on @wakelethttps://t.co/w52zTR30w2 A slow after chat walk down #G2Great chat memory lane lets us see our conversations through NEW eyes.
A 7 We can have students’ voices change our world by have no them write blogs and op-Ed’s for newspapers. #thebowtieboys are a great example of using writing and performance to point out needed changes in teaching. #g2great
Can I just say I read @getnicced funded a teachers Go fund me for a class set of Dear Martin. That is incredible and deserves a shout out. Also go buy that book because it is incredible. #g2great Talk about trying to challenge thinking and change the world.
I am still scarred from 13 weeks we spent on Gone With the Wind. I was done reading week 1. It was a wasted semester.
Still too many "packets" and silly word searches.
#G2Great
A8 I liked hearing about the different ways that Ts increase student engagement in reading and discussion. We need to stop quizzing with surface level questions, they don't foster deep thinking. #G2Great
A8: One? You want me to pick ONE? Ha! I'm inspired by everything and everybody. I like that we need to THINK more in classrooms, and in life. It's not an easily observable task that one could see, but it's important. THINK. #g2great
Such an incredible group and could be something we do in schools everywhere with the kind of commitment Jason @MisterAMisterA has Laura. #BowTieBoys#G2great
A 7 We can have students’ voices change our world by have no them write blogs and op-Ed’s for newspapers. #thebowtieboys are a great example of using writing and performance to point out needed changes in teaching. #g2great
A8 thinking at building opportunities for myself to respond to books & write in purposeful ways in order to bring them back to classroom. bringing this as I look ahead at performance assessments and the actual "real world application" of them. also tons of new book recs!
#G2Great
A8: The contained thread about building a reflective community’s round challenging texts. I hope to continue to foster a community of writing and reading for our staff! #g2great
A8 Change is desperately needed in our world and classrooms. It is a professional and personal imperative that we have the courage to lead the way. Be the model for the change impact you desire for your kids! #G2Great
A5 Great convo with @mrswillisonMVE about Refugee! I loaned it out last year and she read it in one day this summer❤️. So much to talk about, but we focused on how the characters stories came together and intertwined #g2Great
A2 5 Levels Of Leadership, it gave me cause to think about what level of leadership I was on with all of my peers and associations. Not everyone views me@as the same type is leader. That means a there’s work to be done. I mis term it on an individual basis. #g2great
This my friends 👇🏻 #g2great We live in a world that can be overwhelming. Open up their world through books that have developed characters, situations that gives up. More than hope, the possibility for change
A7 We can change the world when we bathe kids in the books and conversations that allow them to see change in our world through the characters/events. Books have the power to touch us and inspire world change. #G2Great
I am SUPER excited for @drgravityg coming book. Teach Like Yourself. I have grown tired with the twitter trend of being told we are not enough as we are. #G2Great
A8 Our #G2Great family always inspires change in some way. I am so grateful for those of you who have the courage to engage in rich dialogue that provokes the next step thinking that is always just out of view. #G2Great
A6: Writing is my passion (the craft itself, teaching it, providing pd on it). I often have to advocate for WHY re: writing workshop. I rely on Donald Graves’ Children Want to Write: “We wanted to write before we wanted to read...” & I watch teachers’ faces change #G2Great
I LOVED chatting with you all tonight. When @TechNinjaTodd & I discuss books and writing, we are thrilled! This is a beautiful community, and I am blessed to be part of it! Thank you all! Much love! #G2Great#SparksInTheDark
Thank you
@teachermantrav and
@TechNinjaTodd

#G2great is such a fabulous learning community because all of you are here! Thank You!
