A1: I first learned about design thinking, formally, at an institute hosted by @McpsMT (One of the best PD opportunities I've participated in. #mtedchat (HA!! I forgot to add the A1!!)
A2: I did, with my fifth graders and also through leading PD with educators. At first, challenging.. harder for more concrete thinkers. Needs patient and supportive facilitator/guide. Must scaffold to independence #mtedchat
Recently moved to Montana and curious to learn how #designthinking is being used in schools around the state. Any examples of processes, tools or mindsets in action? #MTedchat
Q3: Have you participated in the design thinking process yourself? What was that like for you? Did it change anything for you? If you have not participated in design thinking, would you be interested in trying? Why or why not? #MTedchat
I think it's important to recognize #designthining as a process that you can pick pieces from. Focusing in on just the empathy building or prototyping makes it a little less overwhelming, but still instills the mindsets #MTedchat#chooseyourownadventure

A3: I have, through the Institute mentioned in Q1. I greatly appreciated the process. There were times we were thrown off balance… Collaboration is different when the process is more important then the product. The process needs to be supported and validated. #mtedchat

A3 I participated in a design thinking activity w/ @cgillni@nbartley6 and @brainpop in NYC a few years ago to plan PD for Ts Amazing experience and some real friends were made in the process! #MTedchat
👊!! Honestly I think #designthinking can be sometimes more effective at this level. This is an awesome tool/framework to work through a PD or brainstorming session with. #MTedchat
A3: I did last fall. The first step, empathy, is a powerful one. Something all of us – especially our elected officials – could stand to do more of from time to time. #MTedchat
What great insight. I think you are absolutely right about the process being more important than the outcome. That was my failure in my first attempt in using #designthinking#MTedchat
Agreed. It can't be done well when you go in knowing the end result. The loss of control is scary at first and it shifts the role of teacher. #MTedchat
Completely agree! Educators, just like students… Learn more effectively and sustain that learning through being thrown into a place of disequilibrium. Design thinking approach, challenges everyone… Regardless experience. Solution oriented #MTedchat
A1: I first learned about design thinking when working on a TLI restructuring team. The @teachingquality team introduced it as the framewORK for the work we were doing. #MTedchat

Here is a great set of resources if you are new to the process. Great examples to work through and awesome explanation of the framework. #MTedchathttps://t.co/nDiHANlVAS

Totally. And it's important to model what we ask of our students. The #designthinking framework also forces you to think radically and outside the box- which can be hard in education sometimes. It's also a great method to look at old problems in new ways #MTedchat
A3: I've participated several times as a student, teacher with S's, and with other teachers. It's a core in TLI, as @tarahirsch mentioned https://t.co/Y93l0p26Km as well as business education. Takes me back to the marketing days #MTedchat#CTEforall

A4: problems vary by age. I think as students get "schoolified" they want to know the parameters. The more we can incorporate #geniushour, coding in courses the more they will value the process! #MTedchat.

A4: I have to let go of the drivers seat and allow students to take control of their learning. I also find that I want to bail my students out when it gets difficult, rather than guide them. #MTedchat
We are so programmed to keep end in mind, when actually end is developed through process. Focus needs to be on skills practiced through ideation, prototyping, and testing. It is OK to have failed attempt, as long as you can articulate what you might do differently #mtedchat
A3 & A4: I bet many of you use https://t.co/muLNGM1oKQ curriculum but design thinking is a core philosophy of the program. There are open applications right now for FREE quality training with them. Here is a link about the philosophy https://t.co/SVqC2x4aQ6#MTedchat
Agreed. Curious- What strategies do you use to promote a positive culture around failing forward I these situations? It is such a hard mindset to grow- especially as stakes get higher. #MTedchat

Totally agree. @StantonShelly getting those structured learners to break outside the box and relish in the process as opposed to the outcome or grading rubric is tough. #MTedchat
Imagine if #desigthinking was used by all of our younger students that by the time they walked into our classrooms they would be excited about creating rather than the grade! #MTedchat

Sometimes working through the process on a smaller scale when stakes are low help students break out of this box. I try to incorporate short (and sometimes silly) design sprints on a regular basis just to get students used to having to iterate quickly and fail often. #MTedchat
I'm learning to ask questions instead of giving answers and to remind myself that that struggle is part of the process. And sometimes I drink my coffee when I feel like I am giving away too many hints. :) #MTedchat
A4: Design thinking requires Ss to take risks. So much of trad inst has established a pattern for students and to learn from the teacher, and not from the process of discovery. Change can be hard. The more we practice this at younger ages, easier as they go up. #mtedchat
A5: Everything! If we aren't thinking of how our prototypes affect others they won't be successful. But the learning continuum makes it a later learning goal for S's. #MTedchat The image is direct from @codeorg second semester 6-10.
It's an awesome way to just help students get comfortable with the process and grow the mindset. There are some great examples on the k12 Lab network site or it's fun to make up your own. I recently had students redesign the lunch experience and it was awesome #MTedchat
@dcmccurdy yes. Great question. Been reading the book “A More Beautiful Question” by Warren Berger that addresses just that. The power of inquiry. https://t.co/CUsLLf3bkp#MTedchat
Q6: Pulse check: How do you currently feel after participating in the “design thinking” conversation tonight? What questions do you still have? What kind of resources can you share with others if you haven not already shared them. #MTedchat
You basically shrink the process down into 2-5 minute blocks. Having a timer present and counting down make sit even better :). Here is an example of it in action put together by the https://t.co/0VBs7k5PRL taking teachers through the process. https://t.co/aFHbNzG8Hh#MTedchat

A5: Empathy is where it all starts. Design thinking is both personalized and differentiated. Experiences are designed based on what user (student, Staff, community member) will extrapolate. Everything about design thinking begins with the problem that needs a solution. #mtedchat
A6: I'm not as intimidated, nor am I alone in wanting #DesignThinking to be a primary method of learning. Thank you all for a great chat and wonderful resources. ! #MTedchat
A6: Convo Has been perfect timing for me. Spring is time where half my brain is on this year, & half on next. Much of the planning I do myself based on staff feedback. Thinking I need to offer others more opportunity in process of planning. Good place to start w/DT #MTedchat .
