Hello #satchat Jackie from CT, US. I am currently a local activator for @fdesignschool#designthinking as well as a high school library media specialist and a former high school social studies teacher #readon#writeon
Off to judge robotics. Just my 2 cents: Writing is communicating in every discipline. The ability to write clear prose a must. And non-fiction writing needs more attention! Have a great chat. #SatChat
Good morning to my #satchat PLN
Scott, proud Superintendent of @WeAreHTSD and co-founder of #satchat
Excited to be back co-moderating after 2 weeks off. I hope @TheBradCurrie & @wkrakower kept it fun!!!! :)
A1: it means using science context to support ELA. Using common language, focusing on skills like annotating text to make meaning, synthesizing evidence, and using writing to communicate science ideas. Science and Engineering practices include writing. #satchat#allin4NB
A1: Like all things in the curriculum, reading and writing need to be authentic. There should be purpose beyond "this is what we do in school." Students should be using learning to impact their world. #satchat
A1) No matter the course or content students have the opportunity to read and write subject specific materials to gain a greater understanding of the subject using its explicit vocabulary. #satchat
A1 Reading and writing across the curriculum means students are supported as they practice and improve those skills in ALL of their classes, not just in English and Language Arts. #satchat
A1: Rdg and wrtg across the curriculum means making "school" learning what natural learning is anyways. We read and write about topics we are interested in. Break down the silos! #satchat
Even our youngest learners can use reading & writing to impact their world.
Love the example of @Beth_Heidemann's kdgs who wrote and published a fairy tale about food scarcity to raise $ for both local food pantry & friends in #Kibera Slum of Nairobi who faced hunger. #satchat
A1 To me. It means that all classes, regardless of the content, are intentional about infusing a high level of reading and writing into the instruction, group work, reflection, and creating #satchat
A1: Opportunities for students to express knowledge and points of view through writing across curriculum and the opportunity to gain knowledge on new topics through reading – Access to reading and writing builds success #satchat
A1: as a HS teacher it means integrating reading and writing strategies into my science instruction. I am a good reader and writer myself but I often feel ill equipped to teach these skills although they are hugely important and my ss need it #satchat
A1: Finding ways to incorporate writing/reading in various subject areas, including math, science, SEL, engineering. It’s about creating a literacy rich environment in the classroom, in all subjects, at all times! #satchat
A1 Reading and writing across the curriculum means that ELA teachers are not the only ones responsible for teaching those skills. All teachers purposefully and regularly incorporate reading and writing instruction and practice in their lessons. #satchat
A1: It means making the connection for Ss that reading and writing are an integral and necessary part of EVERY subject, they are not their own entity. #satchat
A1 Reading & writing across the curriculum means exploring, analyzing, and creating real-world texts (articles, stories, poems, scripts, interviews, blogs, etc.) to deepen understanding and connect to all content. #satchat
A1. We believe in Discipline Literacy- where kids understand in each content how to “for Ex. In SS class learn skills how to write, read like a historian”. So we emphasize the skills within each content. #satchat
A1 It means we teach reading and writing in every context and in every content. Reading and writing are critical to everything we teach. Gone is the thinking that there’s no reading or writing in math or science for example. #satchat
A1: Incorporating daily reading and writing activities and instruction in all classes, or at least all core classes. Also, ideally it would be co-planned between the various teachers #satchat
It means to me that reading & writing is not isolated to ELA or English classes. Literacy needs to be incorporated in all areas! @WCPSSElemLit states literacy is a right not a privilege! #satchat
A1: across the curriculum implies that reading & writing are a trans-disciplinary purpose. This isn't a "book for English" it is a text for exploring some aspect of the human condition & my "history essay" should be as literary and scientific as it is historical #satchat
Reading & writing across the curriculum means we inspire our readers & writers to think critically, collaborate & connect, reflect on their learning & share their new understandings. Reading & writing are the ways to communicate thinking; it transcends subject area! #satchat
A1: Ss encounter various types of texts & writing opportunities across content areas. Ss are taught how to critically read & write in all disciplines. #satchat
Good morning, #satchat! Chi, Director & Teacher from FL here. A1 Reading and writing across curricula mean that every class incorporates elements of these important forms of communication in the learning process.
The thing about #satchat that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
A1 Reading and writing across the curriculum means creating learning opportunities in every content area where students read, write, listen and speak every single day. It is their right, not a privilege! #satchat
A1: Readers and writers are able to receive content in a personal and meaningful way, when they are able read access the reading, with scaffolding if necessary, and reflect through writing, using a variety of tools. Both increase meaning for students. #satchat
A1 reading and writing across curriculum means it is integrated in all classes and each discipline speaks into the skill, not just English class #satchat
A1: It means, in any content area, being able to comprehend, analyze, think critically about, and respond to (through writing AND speaking) what is read. #satchat
A1: Reading and writing across the curriculum needs to be a natural part of what we do with students in any subject area...and educators need to engage with kids in these processes...along with oral language development...all supporting critical thinking. #satchat
A1: Rdg and wrtg across the curriculum means making "school" learning what natural learning is anyways. We read and write about topics we are interested in. Break down the silos! #satchat
A1 Reading & writing across the curriculum can be...
🌟Listening to a podcast in woodshop
🌟Debating a political cartoon in history
🌟Coding a #VR@cospaces scene in #STEM
🌟Deciphering fake news vs real news in #ELA
It's much more than the textbook + highlighter scene
#satchat
A1. Every teacher should consider themself a reading and writing teacher. Though each different content area is like a car packed for vacation with loads of important subject matter to celebrate and explore, these fundamental skills are always the driver. #SatChat
A1: It’s all about connections. If the children are able to write about their reading or a read aloud, they’re demonstrating their knowledge, processing, and learning. #satchat

#satchat
A1. For me it is disciplinary literacy. Students learn how these skills are truly used authentically in a subject area. It isn’t a contrived reading or writing assignment #satchat
A1: Reading and writing across the curriculum means incorporating literacy-based activities that are meaningful. Authenticity is crucial for all Ss, especially #ELLs. #satchat
A1: Reading and writing across the curriculum means including opportunities for students to strengthen their reading and writing skills as they work on all content areas throughout the day #satchat#TEC207@mgcjusa
A1: Reading and writing across the curriculum to me means they are not isolated contents...no specific time has to be scheduled in because we are always thinking and responding like readers and writers. #Satchat
A1: Reading and writing (when relating our stories, sharing thoughts) are a critical piece of thriving in our culture.
The "across the curriculum" is superfluous--any discipline that does not recognize fundamental need for written word needs some deep self-examination.
#satchat
A1. To me, it means recognizing that Literacy...is present in every content area...And when students leave school, they still need to know how to read and write #satchat
Reading and writing across the curriculum ... let's not over think this ... it is actually reading and writing in all the classes. In math, it could be reading articles about how math is applied in the real world and then discussing/writing about it #satchat
A1. Every teacher should consider themself a reading and writing teacher. Though each different content area is like a car packed for vacation with loads of important subject matter to celebrate and explore, these fundamental skills are always the driver. #SatChat
Yes! Sometimes by forcing those lessons, we end up ruining what could have been a powerful learning experience. Stick with those natural connections! #satchat
A1 as an art educator, it means we read articles on art history and contemporary art. We write to respond but also to plan and give direction to artwork, to critique our artwork, to express our views. It’s applying R&Wr to our content. #satchat
A1: reading and writing across the curriculum means preparing Ss to read in life and not just for each content area. Exposing them to all types of reading and building skills that help them think and analyze #SatChat
A1. Writing and reading processes are focused with content from all other subject. Probably the best authentic way to be most efficient with our instructional time. #satchat
A1. Yes, authentic uses of the reading and writing skills. Educators just need to be more transparent calling these skills what they are so that Ss can see the interdict-linearly thread #satchat

I wonder why? 🤔
A1: As a social studies teacher, I feel extra responsible for teaching critical analysis of sources and acknowledging bias. Civil discourse and written responses important too #satchat
A1: It means that reading and writing and text need to be in every class. Every T is a reading and writing T, and Ss should be given explict instruction and opportunities to read/write in every subject area. #satchat
A1: I love the responses to Q1 as the question seems easy but it is not. The concept of reading and writing across the curriculum is a challenge for many to understand how it "fits in" with what needs to be taught. Great responses!!!!
#satchat
A2: They are lifelong skills that help us be educated and active citizens in society. Reading and writing are communication with medical professionals, making purchases, signing contracts, and engaging as learners! #satchat#allin4NB
A1. RAWC means helping students understand how to navigate text receptively & expressively in every subject. It also means helping all staff understand their role in making that happen. It’s not just an ELA thing! #satchat
While considering reading & writing, can we also reconsider what we call a text? We need to be literate & able to communicate via any media, not just the written word #satchathttps://t.co/fZFq3f36qk
A2: Reading and writing must be stressed in all subject areas because literacy skills are necessary for students to utilize in their everyday life as well as in their academic life #satchat#TEC207@mgcjusa
A2: Reading & writing must be stressed in all subject areas because they are foundational learning skills. If we want Ss to be independent, lifelong learners, reading & writing are musts #SatChat
A2: Discourse and reflection of learning is so important; Ss need to be able to read and write in various formats using content and context as the platform #satchat
I often get the "we write more in your History class than we do in Language Arts class" ... honing their ability to think, explain, and support thoughts. #satchat
A2: Because reading and writing are the most important things. They are a matter of life and death. If you can do them well, you have so many doors open. If you can't, so many doors close. #satchat
Because, just like one of @CollabClassroom's core beliefs, literacy and a sense of connectedness are two foundational elements upon which all other learning builds. #satchat
A2: Writing/Reading is essential to any career. Each profession has its own unique form of writing and reading. It’s a skill necessary to be successful. Writing also requires deep thinking, which helps Ss retain knowledge. #satchat
A2: I feel like taking a step back from the question and looking at it from a 30,000 foot view; it seems odd to me (it might be my age) that this is even a question we need to ask, but that’s just my opinion #satchat
A2 The students who read and write in all subject areas have a better chance of retention and understanding the material. This is all prior knowledge that then grows as the brains develops and content becomes more difficult. #satchat
A2 Reading and writing are skills that are used in all subjects. It’s how we communicate about history, science, and even math. Students need to be able to read and write well in order to learn content, demonstrate what they know, and engage with others. #satchat
A2 Reading and writing are universal skills. Every educator is responsible for developing these skills regardless of content area. Writing is expression and communication of idea, reading gathering understanding. #satchat
A2 Reading and writing are empowering. They’re ways of discovering ourselves and each other, sharing what we know and imagine, building communities and alliances, asking questions, and seeking truth. Why limit that to English class? #satchat
A2: It must not only be stressed, but it must also be taught. The literacy moves a scientist uses to break down a research text are different than the moves an historian uses for historical texts. #satchat
A1: When Ss see the connections across their coursework. I’m mastering inquiry skills and reading strategies through English so I can apply them in science, history, math, etc. #satchat
A2. Reading and writing are essential skills as it allows students to demonstrate authentic learning in rigorous experiences. Those same skills will also be needed in any career field as they allow anyone to constantly learn and adapt. #satchat
A1 Reading is connecting and comprehending EVERY TEXT a student encounters. Writing is being able to express their voice and connection in any format. Creative writing and scientific writing. #Satchat
A2.1: reading and writing are foundational for an educated society. Maybe that’s privilege; but knowledge is power, and if we fail to dig into reading and writing, we are keeping kids from power. #satchat
A2: Reading and writing are foundational literacy skills that MUST be applied and developed in a variety of meaningful/purposeful contexts...leading to/connecting with real-world applications. #satchat
A2 reading and writing are skills that drive student abilities forward. The ability to read, write, and communicate are essential for students to be productive adults #satchat
A2: Being able to write about a concept helps one develop their ideas on the concept, so it is crucial that students are allowed to develop their reading and writing skills across the curriculum so they can learn to work through their thoughts #satchat#TEC207@mgcjusa
A1: Language clarifies thinking. Writing requires a thinking about thinking. Writing across the curriculum supports learning, critical thinking...and necessary communication skills. #satchat
A2: Reading and writing must be stressed in all subject areas because literacy skills are necessary for students to utilize in their everyday life as well as in their academic life #satchat#TEC207@mgcjusa
Thoughts please- I had a convo with a parent recently who was upset that math and ELA were included in related arts classes (art, music, PE). They claimed the kids couldn’t have fun anymore. What do you think #satchat?
A2 Reading & writing must be stressed across the board because it's the foundation of all other learning. This cannot be covered in #ELA alone. #satchat
A2: Reading and writing must be stressed across all areas BC they are important in every area. The key is to teach it specifically for that subject. Not simply in a general sense.
#satchat
A1: We have to bang down the walls between content area classes. We need to ditch textbooks and find authentic ways we, as adults, build our own reading life when there’s a sense of inquiry. Digital literacy is real, and it’s not going anywhere.#satchat
A2 it’s not just R&Wr that should be stressed in all subject areas... the silo system isn’t preparing Ss for the real world where learning in lots of fields is connected and tangled. Ya need to see and explore how their content connects with all the others. #satchat
A2: Being able to read and write effectively means that you are able to think, process, and communicate to ensure your voice is heard...this is what we want for all of our Ss/citizens...this is why we stress the importance. #Satchat
A2: Students need access to reading and writing to build on their skills and utilize strategies. Especially with complex texts. Using other content areas allow for exposure that is already planned through the day #satchat
A2. I note the STEM or even STEAM doesn't emphasize this basic skills. I often tell my sons that even as a scientist you'll have to do persuasive writing to receive your grants. #satchat
A2) It must be stressed in all areas because literacy is everywhere & fundamental to navigating our global community. Students must see and understand that reading/writing are not isolated activities. #satchat
A2 Reading & writing must be stressed across the board because it's the foundation of all other learning. This cannot be covered in #ELA alone. #satchat
I find it difficult to believe that we actually have to convince teachers that reading and writing is important in all classes. Like seriously ... it is the foundation of just about everything and yet I know we have teachers who will fight the "extra work" ... sigh #satchat
Q2- We must model for kids that reading and writing exist everywhere in life and that they are not learned in isolation. It also helps reinforce the switch from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." #satchat
A2 Writing & Reading should not be taught just in one subject but shown the importance in all subjects. As we are always reading in and writing in all that we do. #Satchat
A2. P1. Reading is a foundation for liberty and equity. We need to stress reading and writing ALL the time so that children have the skills they need to be full, thoughtful participants in their community. #satchat
A1: Reading and writing across the curriculum is just real life! Once our students get out of our classrooms they’ll have to read and write about so many things... #satchat
A2 Reading & writing are communication skills. It doesn't matter what I know if I can't convey it to anyone or understand others; how can I participate if I can't communicate? #satchat
A2: One of the great disservices we do to kids is to break the curriculum into dozens of different subjects and pretend they are isolated areas. They are all related and connected. I don't see how reading and writing can be separated from learning in any other area. #satchat
A1a) In Elementary school it’s imperative to have students reading across content areas when they shift from learning to read, to reading to learn. #satchat
A2 Reading works to increase our students' vocabulary, which leads into the writing. A larger vocabulary bank in their mind will help to make their writing more fluid, exciting, and scholarly. This is direct correlated to the skills needed in today's advancing careers! #satchat
A1 reading and writing across the curriculum to means what it did in the 80s - the shift when kids move from learning to read and write to reading and writing to learn #satchat
A2. Reading is breathing in. Writing is breathing out.
Schema theory 101: Our brains learn and absorb new information like a sponge. But they can only learn so much at a time before they need to “squeeze out” and continue to absorb.
Boom. Reading and writing. #SatChat
A2: One of the great disservices we do to kids is to break the curriculum into dozens of different subjects and pretend they are isolated areas. They are all related and connected. I don't see how reading and writing can be separated from learning in any other area. #satchat
A2 It’s certainly important for students to receive exposure to a variety of vocabulary from different disciplines. Writing can serve as a way to process & apply information in an authentic manner. #Satchat
Reading & writing, which don’t always mean paper, pens & books, are critical ways for our students to share their thinking, wonderings & understandings! Reading someone else’s writing can provide windows & mirrors for others! #satchat
A1 1/2 reading and writing to learn helps kids make sense of what adults think is important to learn and when the literacy experiences are made relevant( @DBQProject work for example) they may be more likely to find meaning in what they read and/or write, create, share #satchat
A2. Reading is breathing in. Writing is breathing out.
Schema theory 101: Our brains learn and absorb new information like a sponge. But they can only learn so much at a time before they need to “squeeze out” and continue to absorb.
Boom. Reading and writing. #SatChat
A2.P2. In addition, reading dn writing open the doors to all other subjects, especially when we make the R/W work authentic, relevant and meaningful #SatChat
A2 Reading & writing is thinking with a pen/pencil! Our brains take a photograph of what we physically write down and stores it. It is essential to learning. It is as easy as jotting down top 2 things learned today & questions or confusions we still have — exit ticket #satchat
A2: Being able to write involves a high level of cognition. There are so many processes going on! If we can get our Ss writing across the curriculum they will be better readers and thinkers. #satchat
A2: Reading and writing are essential to everything we do in life, to varying degrees depending on life experience & career choices. Mechanics have to be able to read a manual. Lawyers have to know how to write a brief. We all have to be able to communicate. #satchat
A2 Literacy, especially with regards to academic vocabulary, helps students learn the different modes of writing, whether expository or argumentative or academic. Writing helps students cement learning in those areas, especially when high level blooms Qs are posed #satchat
Agree @MsJWhiting! We need to remember that multimodal resources are considered texts. Ss not only use reading & writing skills with these but also work on digital literacy skills.#satchat
While considering reading & writing, can we also reconsider what we call a text? We need to be literate & able to communicate via any media, not just the written word #satchathttps://t.co/fZFq3f36qk
A2: Students need access to reading and writing to build on skills and utilize strategies (Especially with complex texts) Using other content areas allow to springboard activities for exposure that is already planned through the day and is more meaningful for students #satchat
A2: in order to learn you need to read increasingly more challenging text, in order to communicate effectively you need to communicate clearly increasingly challenging content #satchat
A2: How can it not be stressed? Our world works on communication. Every single day we need to read something or communicate in writing with another person. From reading a menu to writing an email or a text, we are communicating with ELA skills. #satchat
That is like asking, Why should technology not be blended into all teaching/learning? We hold these truths to be self-evident...except they are not to those who support narrow interests. #satchat
I do worry about enforcement from on high--under a previous Superintendent, we had to formalize this, and wheelbarrows of paper were rolled across the street to the admin building as "evidence" that RWAC was happening.
Education can be lethal to the written word.
#satchat
A1: As a social studies teacher, I feel extra responsible for teaching critical analysis of sources and acknowledging bias. Civil discourse and written responses important too #satchat
A2: Ss live in a world where they are ALWAYS going to have to defend, interpret, justify, reason, explain... If we limit this to one period a day we shortchange them of the necessary exposure to make these connections to all aspects of life. #satchat
A2: I’ve told many of my #ELLs’ Ps, “La lectura y escritura suelen ser las habilidades más difíciles en otro idioma”- reading & writing tend to be the most difficult skills in another language... We need to stress it so Ss can make sense of the world around them. #satchat
The issue is they do that in math ... what they don't do in math ... rarely, if ever, read/watch a video about math working in the real world ... then they wonder kids are so disconnected from math. #satchat
A2. I think from the time kids are little, they need to see that RW is present in every subject...We write in Math...We read in Science...Not isolated #satchat
Good morning #satchat. Sorry to be joining late. Q2: Reading & writing are communication. You need both to gain & share knowledge, so both are a must for all content areas. Without them, there is no possibility for real-world connections & learning wouldn't be truly meaningful.
I think it is best accomplished by cross curricular connections and integration, e.g. students read in ELA about what they are learning in science, collaboration among diff. subject teachers is key #satchat
A1:) It not only means reading & writing in every content area each and every day, but providing opportunities & challenges for Ss to connect their learning across content areas through R/W. It's exploring the Hows & Whys & deepening the learning through those skills. #satchat
Q2: #satchat Reading and writing are essential skills for the future business world. Due to tech & the virtual/global world we live-in it is important to hones one's communication & collaboration skills.
A2: Reading and writing are the cornerstones of literacy. Literacy should be central to everything we do. It helps us communicate, process and challenge. #satchat
Like many things in education, we isolate subjects because it's easier for adults. It's easier to grade, schedule, control what goes on in schools, etc. It's less "messy."
It's not good for learning or student development, though.
#satchat
Reading means books & books provide windows & mirrors for us & encourage perspective taking, help build empathy and understanding of ourselves & others; writing means we get to give others a glimpse into our world, perspectives, experiences & passions! #satchat
A2: Reading in each subject is important because you can use different kinds, such as narrative ( which females prefer) or informational (which males prefer). This helps males in Lang Arts ( which is more narrative) and females in Science/Math ( more informational) #SATCHAT
Totally agree. They need to be shown step by step how folks in each discipline communicate and then given ample opportunity to practice that particular kind of literacy. #satchat
100% in agreement with the importance of writing across curriculum. But that means all Ts need to know how to teach it. As an LA T I hated being given a stack of research papers & being asked to grade it "for the writing" while the Science or SS T graded for content.
#satchat
The issue is they do that in math ... what they don't do in math ... rarely, if ever, read/watch a video about math working in the real world ... then they wonder kids are so disconnected from math. #satchat
Should be, yes. Reasons: Kids need to read to have successful LIVES, students should learn about different content areas to be more well rounded, and we shouldn’t bear that burden on any one person. Collectively we can accomplish more and help more kids. #satchat
A3: We gave struggling 4th gr readers & writers their own blog. Then, scheduled @SkypeClassroom calls w/ scientists & other inspiring people. Ss read @Newsela articles related to calls. Then they blogged & got feedback. Writing quality went up 2 grade levels in 6 months. #satchat
A2.P2. In addition, reading & writing open the doors to all other subjects, especially when we make the R/W work authentic, relevant and meaningful #SatChat
#SaturdayMorning#satchat#caravan#migrants
over 10,000 migrants expected to overwhelm Tijuana at border crossing. situation expected to last 6 months.
US Side reinforcing border wall.
A1: #satchat
True forms of reading & writing in any subject must force learners to digest and utilize a mix of new vocabulary and highly frequent words to generate a conclusion and share a unique message.
A2: Ss live in a world where they are ALWAYS going to have to defend, interpret, justify, reason, explain... If we limit this to one period a day we shortchange them of the necessary exposure to make these connections to all aspects of life. #satchat
A2 Reading and Writing are foundational skills. It’s embedded across subjects and content, imagine if these skills were highlighted and celebrated in EVERY subject. If we model for them and then Celebrate their work ( good or bad)- impact would be phenomenal!! #Satchat
An issue I have seen with math is that their version of "writing" is explain your answer ... which to me is akin to just checking off a box. Explain why 2 + 2 = 4? or "I incorporate reading through my word problems." ... #satchat
Like many things in education, we isolate subjects because it's easier for adults. It's easier to grade, schedule, control what goes on in schools, etc. It's less "messy."
It's not good for learning or student development, though.
#satchat
Yes! Formative assessments are always vital and allowing students to write often allows students that don’t want to speak up a chance to articulate their understanding! #SatChat
Is it really easier, though? Don't we just compete for time with students to teach much of what they are also supposed to be learning other places? #satchat
A3 I facilitate a class called Tech Literacy, where Ss learn how to:
💻Research effectively & w/ @creativecommons
💻Determine the legitimacy of a site
💻Write an email & when email comm is appropriate
💻Create & format a spreadsheet (inspired by @alicekeeler )
💻Code
#satchat
A3) In my computer class the students read about the historyof computing. Wrote on their ideas about the evolution and created guides for younger students. #satchat
Follow up question (because I’m chewing on it) writing vs typing? Does it matter? I feel like it does; but I’m not sure if that’s my age talking. If technology failed, writing would be a critical skill; but if it doesn’t; would we need to draw the characters? #satchat
A3: I love using Interactive Notebooks. After the lesson, students interpret what they learned by writing on the opposite page. They can do a quick write, a poem, a cartoon sketch. All personal and makes learning meaningful. I use across content areas, separate notebooks.#satchat
A2 - if we do not stress R & W how do we know that our S have learnt? How do we test for understanding/comprehension? When they fail whom should we blame? #satchat
A2. Part of the challenge is that as parents, we never learned to properly write. Therefore, its a challenge to be able to help my children with their writing. Has anyone else noticed the challenge of parental engagement? #satchat
A3: A couple of years ago, one of our schools really emphasized the integration of reading & writing in all content areas. I saw many lessons that incorporated informational text in classes such as PE, health, music, etc. #satchat
A3: In mathematics, math talks, journaling, review of statistical articles, content discourse talks...all great examples of extending learning #satchat
A2: Reading and writing are foundational literacy skills that MUST be applied and developed in a variety of meaningful/purposeful contexts...leading to/connecting with real-world applications. #satchat
I haven’t witnessed the use every time but my guess is it is a combo. The teacher was encouraged by me (principal) and also the district but now enjoys the students reading about Van Gogh for example. #satchat
A3: Personally I want to see us move away from lesson plans and more toward planning learning experiences that provide real-world, cross-curricular learning. #Satchat
A3: PBL units integrate reading and writing beautifully! @KatieHuang2 's unit in science and social studies integrating regions of country with animal characteristics! #satchat
A1. Reading & writing across the curriculum means voice & choice. Students chose their materials to read & how they write. Engaging w their material & its relationship to the subject will enhance learning. #satchat
A2 cont’d: A heavy emphasis on these skills will help foster higher-order thinking which I think plays a part in becoming a well-rounded person. #satchat
A3 Writing in math to explain problem solving, analyzing what mistakes were made in problems, creating comics to explain 2 step math problems. Blogging about what was read in SS/Science. #satchat
A3: We do labs in science where students follow a lab report format (taught step by step). This gives them practice w/ scientific writing which is very very different than writing in English class
#satchat
In American elementary schools we reteach 60% of the curriculum each year because subjects are isolated and students do not have an emotional connection to what they are learning. #satchat
These are the kinds of written reflections our math Ts ask: How
can you find a linear function that is a good model for a set of data
and then measure the accuracy of that model with residuals?
They really do have to think through writing.
#satchat
A2: #satchat Currently, in grades K-2, opportunities to learn about science, social studies etc are limited. It might be useful to think about integrating content into reading and writing instruction rather than the opposite. Credit to my colleague, Pete Hester, for this one.
I love the idea of allowing students to participate in formative assessment by writing their answers, I think it gives students who aren't comfortable speaking in front of the class the same opportunity as those who are to showcase their knowledge #satchat#TEC207@mgcjusa
Yes! Formative assessments are always vital and allowing students to write often allows students that don’t want to speak up a chance to articulate their understanding! #SatChat
1) sketchnoting is critical thinking in multiple modalities
2) some people don't have the physical capacity to write and tech unlocks their ideas
3) some students who can type or hand write are liberated by voice tools
#satchat
think it's related to the way we see ourselves as educators -- if we view selves as EXPERTS then we need to stay in our zone (College major?) -- if we are LEARNERS - then we facilitate learning with our Ss in the disciplines #satchat
Q 1 & 2 Reading & writing across the curriculum means that Ss are expanding their reading & writing strategies across all content areas. This is important bc it is mostly thru reading and writing that Ss must gain new info & demonstrate their learning! #satchat
A2: S’s brains are constantly searching and scanning for ways to wire and connect to other parts of their brains. Trans-disciplinary inquiry provides a natural habitat to cultivate these connections and deepen the level of understanding of content and process. #satchat
6th grade Science had kids read /write about earthquake/volcanos and then present to others; culminating PBL activity they had to build a structure to withstand “a simulated earthquake or volcano”. Empowerment and authentic! #satchat
Technical writing is a skill that all students need. That is part of the innovation process. You need to be able to explain the science, math and engineering to others. We need to bridge the gaps between the content and use the whole brain to learn #Satchat
A3 when I taught AP History I focused on writing argumentative essays regularly. Tests all included essays and regularly scaffolded essay writing skills of thesis, evidence and explanations of the evidence. #satchat
A3 one thing I have observed too often is the teaching of skills in isolation. Teachers need to have tome to plan the integration. And technology can help. #satchat
Reading & writing across the curriculum means we inspire our readers & writers to think critically, collaborate & connect, reflect on their learning & share their new understandings. Reading & writing are the ways to communicate thinking; it transcends subject area! #satchat
I think it would be even more powerful if possible to travel to research centers, Univ, etc to watch math folks doing their work, interview them about how they use R/W. Get experts in to talk about these skills in action. This worked well in my school. #satchat
A2 processes of literacy reading writing listening speaking all R forms of communication that critically integrate 2 allow humans to produce & share ideas - in vids, op ed, narrative, how to guides, research, forming & defending arguments, texting, tweeting, blogging #satchat
A3: In my English class we read great texts then write about the complex, controversial and interesting ideas in those texts. Finally we talk about what we wrote and discuss and argue. It's simple, but it works! #satchat
A3: PBL units integrate reading and writing beautifully! @KatieHuang2 's unit in science and social studies integrating regions of country with animal characteristics! #satchat
A3 as a social studies teacher/reading specialist, I try to take some time to divorce from heavy content and focus on skills. Teaching use of textual evidence to write an essay from this comic book to answer - are Stormtroopers evil? Instant engagement. #satchat
Hi! Old edu friend from AL😃 Just popped on to see what's up. Q2: Reading across the curriculum is critical because if the subject is important, folks need to communicate about it. Consider how much reading is required for the ACT science portion, for example. #satchat
Being A Writer and Making Meaning units integrate a variety of informational texts in authentic ways so students see real connections. You can check out the digital resources with a free trial on our Learning Hub: https://t.co/hlQgF7XfJb#satchat
A3: I like to read biographies to the Ss about famous men and women who have shaped American history. The Ss write & illustrate their own books to share at our Young Author’s Night. #satchat
A2. Think about what it takes to read & write math. The cognitive skills are amazing to be able to read and explain at differing levels. Model the skill, teach the skill, encourage the skill and a student can communicate in any situation. #satchat
Agree. But as we are talking about “writing” today; do we see all of those as analogues? I’m not sure we do. “writing” has changed definitions and I’m reflecting on it. In a sense we are moving away from “writing” as a society. Will there come a day we don’t write? #satchat
@inspire0818@DennisDill Great point. As a MS math teacher when I was in the classroom, I experienced this. I did a lot of talking with my ELA counterpart to get ideas and to see what they were working on so I could mirror some of that writing in the math context #satchat
An issue I have seen with math is that their version of "writing" is explain your answer ... which to me is akin to just checking off a box. Explain why 2 + 2 = 4? or "I incorporate reading through my word problems." ... #satchat
I ❤️ how the students found purpose in their writing. Made it much more authentic and relative. Writing to an audience also broadens their view and makes their words feel like they have more worth. Excellent ideas here! #SatChat
A3: Every Friday my Ss complete a Weekly Reflection using Google Forms... It's their opportunity to reflect and answer some higher order thinking Qs... But I'm loving the idea of finding an article about our current topic to follow up their Reflection! #satchat
A3 I’ve been assigning articles on visual arts that tie directly to the in class artmaking - the result has been less lecture from me and more discussion from Ss. Writing will serve as a guide for my AP Ss as they develop ideas for their sustained investigation portfolio #satchat
A3: Most importantly we honor and acknowledge Ss voice when they write and about their ideas and opinions on what we read. By doing that we make them realize they have power. That reading/writing and literacy gives you a voice and that voice is powerful. #satchat
A3: Just did an amazing lesson using @brainpop#creativecoding. Ss created a newscast based on their learning about weather. They researched/wrote the newscast & they were reading and following coding steps. Program didn’t work as expected? Reread your steps/rewrite code #satchat
I don't think isolating subjects need be negative. I think helps us focus on one topic at a time. What if we need to reteach 60% of the curriculum BC we tend to use largely ineffective teaching methods out of ignorance? #satchat
A3 High School LMS here, I love having reading challenges for my students and now I’m thinking - quick write challenges and writing prompt challenges! Celebrate any and all reading and writing! #Satchat

A1 Reading/writing for Ss with learning and attention issues, including dyslexia, require that teachers permit alternatives to printed words so Ss fully participate across the curriculum. This can happen with accessibility tools on hand in hardware and software. #satchat
A1: lesson plans that use formatives to drive instructional decisions regarding Ss understanding of what they are reading I feel are great! We need to understand not only if a students is thinking about the lesson, but also how they are thinking to address misconceptions #satchat
#satchat A3 allowing for choice in reading materials. Students will create a superhero out of a person who has had a positive impact on civil rights. They will write a biography. Research. Teach other students about often overlooked people in our history and world around us
“Why do we read? Why do we write? How do we bring reading to children? How do we encourage children to write?” old post for today's #satchathttps://t.co/YqbBXPdjXD
A3. This is sort of cheating (since I teach Literature), but we just wrapped up The Scarlet Letter driven unit w/ daily reading & writing challenges. Used @Wizards_DnD inspired gameplay to craft a full #Gamification novel study. Please steal it! https://t.co/8TyYZKcLRF#satchat
A3 Makes me think of my education classes in college when I created thematic units!! Every subject was integrated into the unit, focusing on a particular text. Would love to see this back into schools but need complex text with rigorous activities. #satchat
A3. We had math students collect class data around test grades and homework completion. kids used data to find line of best fit to determine if there was a correlation. Then they had to debate the effectiveness of our HW policy in front of the leadership team. #satchat
A3 as a social studies teacher/reading specialist, I try to take some time to divorce from heavy content and focus on skills. Teaching use of textual evidence to write an essay from this comic book to answer - are Stormtroopers evil? Instant engagement. #satchat
Some parents expect writing to look the way it looked when they were in school. We can offer tools and strategies to help parents support their kids’ growth as writers. Here’s what I share: https://t.co/sW41ZMgA2N#satchat
A3: Think cross-curricularly (is that even a word 🤔) w/the book Refugee by @AlanGratz...the social studies is natural, science of survival, math w/money, distance...just a quick example. #Satchat
A3: Just did an amazing lesson using @brainpop#creativecoding. Ss created a newscast based on their learning about weather. They researched/wrote the newscast & they were reading and following coding steps. Program didn’t work as expected? Reread your steps/rewrite code #satchat
A1: GM y’all from Jax! Reading and writing across the curriculum means presenting students with a robust curriculum that allows Ss to read and fully engage in rich text that incorporates aligned writing tasks (not irrelevant and/or isolated writing prompts) #satchat
A2 In order to more effectively reinforce their learning and help them make connections, students must be able to formulate their thoughts and communicate them in a cohesive manner. #satchat
Building-wide collaboration is the key to any process. Often times, Ts don’t take the opportunity to plan with their colleagues in other departments #satchat
@inspire0818@DennisDill Great point. As a MS math teacher when I was in the classroom, I experienced this. I did a lot of talking with my ELA counterpart to get ideas and to see what they were working on so I could mirror some of that writing in the math context #satchat

The fact that we even have to have conversations about how to implement reading and writing highlights the severity of the problem. Reading and writing should be the foundation and most natural part of all learning #satchat
#satchat Q3: Lessons where students share a collaborative Google Slide for research. Followed by the group of students creating a game or using another authentic method to express the content they learn #GSuiteEdu
A4: We've used @newsela a lot to support reading & writing in the past. My go-tos are any content creation tools that facilitate authentic writing. Not flashy but even word processors and note taking tools #SatChat
A3. I like Constructive Response...Open ended in Math...Teaching how to support response...Researching any topic is key and they love to work in groups or partners #satchat
It isn’t just reading and writing, it is creating a process that allows students to learn and produce representations of the knowledge they have acquired. Students then need to be able to share that knowledge with others #satchat
A3: As an English teacher, I always integrated elements of reading from science, history, & other areas - as well as some hands on experiential activities - in which students would journal, research, & create their own written works (poetry, essays, presentations, etc.). #satchat
A3. I always select a range of narrative texts that link to whatever unit of work we are doing.... we explore content through those texts. Writing comes naturally from wanting to record our ideas, questions, responses etc #satchat#reading#writing#learning
A3: Inquiry is the perfect place for critical thinking through reading & writing. Investigating & explaining the why of something requires questioning, reading, & writing. This fits naturally in any subject area. Plus the ability to teach #digcit skills alongside content #satchat
A3: It's kind of challenging to articulate how this happens specifically, because it's nearly organic. When creating lesson plans, is there always a box to check for integrating reading and writing? #satchat
Q4. I've seen a service in the past that could allow students to input entire essays and then it would be "graded" and provided feedback. Anyone know what I'm talking about? #satchat
Hard to believe how much #EdcampNJ has grown in 7 years, odd not being there this year but family first. Will miss all the learning that takes place. Congrats to @mrnesi and @SPSantilli for the two location #edcampNJ today! You gentleman are rock stars! #Satchat
A4. We use things like Edmodo or our LMS system where kids can write claims to evidence and then others provide feedback or counterclaims to that information. We also use Flipgrid so kids can express learning different ways. #satchat
I've heard of "break the mold" schools that teach thru interdisciplinary projects

My district has G-Suite for everyone @GoogleForEdu and I jumped in years ago and started using #GoogleClassroom. When I found Read & Write @RWW and saw what the premium version could do, I made sure every ELL student in my class had access. GAMECHANGER! #satchat
I agree. I had teachers do a what’s the cost PBL project that tied math, ela, sc, and SS together. In it their were anchor texts that helped students see the theme in all classes. #satchat
Yes. So important to give Ss opportunities to fill in the gaps in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The content may spark the desire but it may not. #satchat
A4 Google Tools and @Seesaw. Ss use seesaw to practice reading fluency, explaining math problems and commenting on others post. Love using google docs for collaborative work! Ss commenting to share glows and grow, helping each other!! #satchat
A3: As a PreT I haven't had the chance to write my own lesson plans yet, but I've observed my co-op teacher integrate reading and writing by having her students write and share news articles every Monday morning about something they did that weekend #satchat#TEC207@mgcjusa
My definition of writing is fluid, as is my definition of phone, we may call it one thing and must stay open to how the experience and skill evolves. #satchat
A4 Google Docs has changed how we teach writing. (like Dorothy stepping from b&w to color) Feedback to Ss, peer editing, version history… all that adds up to more effective support of the writing process. And if it's effective, all Ts are more likely to use it. #satchat
A3 Just-tried the NSR 4As Text Protocol with Article of the Week on how Social Media may be affecting teen’s mental health. Students had to choose bits of text to agree with, argue, act upon, and look at assumptions the author was making.#satchat
Writing is across the board as it is a way of communication. If the content is being marked so should the way the thinking is developed and that belongs with the teacher who gave the assignment. Every teacher is a teacher of writing. #satchat
Are you sure? I want you to be right, but it feels like societally we are moving away from it. Handwriting isn’t a necessary skill anymore (vs typing) with voice to text, we are moving away from even typing. #satchat

Teaching and learning seem to become so much easier when we relate skills/content to students. By relating to students and also creating meaningful experiences for them, learning becomes natural and fun. #satchat
A4: 1/2 Last year I used @Kidblog to have Ss document their thinking. Really useful for all subjects, not just our ELA block. Allowed Ss to safely share their writing and express ideas. #satchat
Creating that culture in a classroom and in a school takes time and purposeful planning and authentic relationships; if done properly, the benefits are tremendous #satchat
It isn’t just reading and writing, it is creating a process that allows students to learn and produce representations of the knowledge they have acquired. Students then need to be able to share that knowledge with others #satchat
We've been reading non-fiction articles & using a Social Studies textbook to learn about the Wampanoag tribe during our scheduled ELA time. Students created posters with facts they learned from various chapters or articles & then shared out.
A4 I tend to not use tech very much with reading/writing - lots of research on that topic. But - to teach prewriting, textual evidence, and summary, we use @Pixton to create modern fairy tales as they reflect our changing morals. #satchat
A4 My students write everything in Google Docs so they can peer review. My website is a hub for all reading & writing resources. I’ve experimented with other tools but haven’t seen them lead to deeper reading or more compelling writing. #satchat
A4: @Desmos activities in math always allow Ss to write to explain or justify their reasoning... Any ideas on where I can find math-related articles? #satchat
A3. I work with teachers across curriculums to relate. We’re looking at fiction books that tie to science that the art teacher can help students draw too. It’s not reading & writing - it’s learning & engaging. #satchat
A3 when I taught a history of American Ed course for an ed leadership higher ed program, I used almost all primary sources from 1600s to present day -multiple media & learners formed case study teams who produced both individual & collective responses in multiple media #satchat
A3 The best lessons involve authentic writing, depending on content area (editorials, letters to public officials, How-to instructions, blogs, poetry ...) #satchat
I voice type much of my communication. I can still compose my thoughts, reflect on my word choice, edit my grammar, and verify cogency and clarity before hitting send. Am I not writing? #satchat

I can see that; so handwriting may not be necessary, but what we are really talking about is “language” isn’t it? Because once technology arrives where a student can speak and it gets “written down” we won’t be writing anymore, will we? #satchat
A2 a readon not mentioned yet, communication is a life skill and communication allows both teachers and student to evaluate the depth of learning, ee communicate to demonstrate and disseminate knowledge #satchat
A4: For HS students, I found creating discussion boards in our LMS for mathematical discourse was a success. The key was to have a clear rubric and to create a safe and supportive environment #satchat
A3: I create a lesson on @decktoys that allows the Ss to collaborate on a reading material. Thereafter I use the same platform to create a #breakout lesson incorporating written elements to deepen the Ss understanding. They love the game element to it #satchat
A2: R/W across the curriculums means those modalities are integral in all aspects of a Ss day. It doesn’t just happen during that “one hour” of the day. #satchat
Amazing experience @NYSAHPERD#NYSAHPERD18 I’m so proud to be part of an amazing group of people and to co-facilitate a session on classroom management to incredible and dedicated educators of New York! Classroom management starts with building community! #satchat#secphysed
A4 our online system is awesome - allows me to upload a reading, link to questions and see what their working on if it’s an in class task. I’ve not gotten too fancy with the ed platforms bc often times all their art related articles are dated #satchat
A4 Google Tools and @Seesaw. Ss use seesaw to practice reading fluency, explaining math problems and commenting on others post. Love using google docs for collaborative work! Ss commenting to share glows and grow, helping each other!! #satchat
That’s what I am reflecting on; historically, oral vs written. Those two methods are now one in the same. What is writing? Are we really just talking about language? #satchat
A4: I’m a huge @Newsela fan...love the ability to level texts and the current events to discuss with Ss. They embed a writing prompt with each article, too. #Satchat
U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell on Friday said the U.S. government would use its nuclear weapons in a hypothetical war against Second Amendment supporters refusing to give up their firearms. #satchat in south dade

A3 Next week 5th grade Ss will research why a local dam failed during a flood & then will design a new dam to replace it. Both reading & writing are incorporated into this PBL activity by @blesmediacenter. Ss must explain why the dam failed & how their design will work. #satchat
sure ... if you actually have funds to do these types of things. I work with middle school kids ... the issue is they don't have a clue what is out there. They need wide exposure ... and taking a trip is pointless if the other 180 days is spent looking at paper. #satchat
A4. Google Forms are GREAT for gathering writing samples. Use response validation feature to force a submission of at least (x) characters! Reuse the same form again & again to track multiple submissions over time w/ a simple spider graph so students can see progress. #satchat
A3: Lessons that integrate primary sources engage students and allow them to look at multiple viewpoints, and think deeply and critically about past, present, and implications for future. #satchat
A4. I show students how to use @googledocs or @Office365 to write. When Ss research subject (read), Ss should copy the citation first and then start writing their notes all directly online. Creating an annotated bibliography makes it easy to write. #satchat
A3 Lessons that involve annotations of text (in any form) also encourage students to be more active readers. Essay questions that involve the application of knowledge help develop critical thought. #satchat
my real rules for writers
1. Pants are the enemy
2. Naps are essential
3. You want cake? You deserve cake
4. Don't be such an asshole, esp to yourself
5. The only way out is through
6. One space after periods
7. Failure is OK
8. Don't stet in anger
9. Don't make lists of 10
Yes, and the content subjects in particular offer opportunities for Ss to apply reading and writing toward authentic learning and social action... real world issues, primary sources, knowledge creation, authentic products. #satchat
I like the idea of teaching through interdisciplinary projects BC it makes it real and gives ample chances to apply content.
But I have doubts about implementation. Students must know before they can apply. #satchat
A3: Last yr my H #chemistry S’s researched a #STEM topic, tied it to chem, wrote a disc. board post, commented on other posts, and made an ornament about the topic for the class #ChemisTree. #satchat
A2: By emphasizing and requiring SS to R&W in all areas, we reinforce the necessity of good communication skills. Those skills go beyond the school years, into their professional and vocational futures. #satchat
A4:@DeckToys all the way! They even have text-to-speech built in to allow for read aloud accommodations. Here's an example of a maths deck I created for my 3rd grader. Click on the link to try out #satchathttps://t.co/GSSdtIGkhM
A3: Back when I was student teaching, the Ss had learned about the role of each branch of gov. and wrote a thank you letter to the President. I’d want to modify this and let Ss choose who they’d like to write to- the Prez., a Supreme Court judge, a senator, etc. #satchat
An interdisciplinary project requires students to know about multiple subjects before the project can begin.
Projects take time to do well
So I worry that, even when done well students will miss out on content/skills that are taught in more traditional contexts.
#satchat
A2: As educators, we know those skills are imperative, but it's worth noting effective & analytical communicators today must be able to read & write differently than those of just 10 yrs ago.The digital Autobahn we all "drive" on these days requires those skills evolve. #satchat
A4: All @GoogleForEdu tools are so powerful for collaborative writing. For content area reading in HS, @galecengage Opposing Viewpoints database has so many great current events & primary sources. Google Keep is awesome for note taking & organizing thoughts. #satchat
I can buy into that, but does it give them a meaningful connection? you are looking higher level ... most kids have already written off math as the bane of their existence by that time ... reading/writing in math is more than just explaining answers. #satchat
A5. Must provide kids for kids to see Relevance of reading and writing and support them in the work - allow them some voice on how they share their learning with others. #satchat
Someone just shared the idea of composing vs writing. I guess for me I never realized how I saw “writing” short for “handwriting” and how today we are moving away from that #satchat
A5: We can support students who struggle with reading and writing by meeting the students where they are. There are so many tools & resources for reading & writing that differentiation should be expected #satchat
A5: Like with all learning, students need to understand WHY they are reading and writing or they won't care enough to transfer learning to long-term memory. It can't be solely done to pass tests & quizzes. They need to be actually impacting their world outside of school. #satchat
A5: I think that “unique way” is reading and writing across the curriculum. If a student is struggling with those skills, supporting their reading and writing in every classroom is an effective way to help them improve. #satchat

Students must have a reason to learn before they truly know. When school stops being about arbitrary stuff we want kids to learn so they can pass tests, and starts becoming about solving real problems, motivation as well as interdisciplinary connections are obvious. #satchat

A5: Technology can help. Books that Ss can listen to; knowing reading levels in order to find "just right" books for accessibility. Finding books/topics that kids LOVE! Know your Ss! #satchat
I agree. Question- do you find that teachers are reluctant to blog and put thoughts/content out there? How would one inspire them to move past those fears to get of the porch and out of their comfort zone? #satchat
A5 As was said earlier when students have choice in what they read it helps develop literacy skills. Choice promotes buy in, for too long our ELA curriculums have been static. You have to read these books. Give students choice and their will own their learning. #satchat
I think it does. Our math program is based on explorations & critical thinking. Ss see it as solving puzzles & most of them love their math class.
#satchat
A2: A students ability levels with reading and writing (due to integration across content areas) typically dictates levels of success in other content areas. #satchat
But are we really valuing penmanship? That’s where I am reflecting most? When we talk reading/writing (like today’s #satchat) I’m not sure we are talking about penmanship. I’m wondering if that will even be a thing in 10-20 years
A2. Reading is breathing in. Writing is breathing out.
Schema theory 101: Our brains learn and absorb new information like a sponge. But they can only learn so much at a time before they need to “squeeze out” and continue to absorb.
Boom. Reading and writing. #SatChat
A5 I think teaching requires flexibility in all areas concerning Ss. Every S learns differently and we should be addressing each child’s strengths and weaknesses, be they R&Wr or some other focus. #satchat

This is just not true. A model of, "learn this and then do x project" doesn't work.

We used twitter contacts to get the Skype experts. The cost truly was the time it took to find the right people. With that said, Ss may not know what is out there, but it’s our calling as educators to show them, right? #satchat
A5 For each writing project, Ss need:
✏️ a DESCRIPTION of what they’ll create
✏️ a list of EXPECTATIONS so they know what excellence means
✏️ MODEL TEXTS showing what excellence looks like
✏️ STRATEGIES for writing & revising
✏️ TIME in class to create excellent work

My name is Sara Anderson I am a fifth grade teacher in Middletown Delaware... this is my first chat. My amazing AP told me about this @japhillips0722#satchat
Isn't it ironic to advocate for penmanship during a digitally streaming, synchronous conversation where we are hand or voice typing our contributions to the dialogue? #satchat
When I was in high school I was fortunate enough that my school provided everyone access to this database and more, @galecengage was always so helpful when writing argumentative research papers. #satchat
In reply to
@BrooksieBKramer, @GoogleForEdu, @galecengage
Typing vs handwriting vs speaking in a manner technology can dictate our words are all one in the same when we talk “writing” it seems. Are those skills all equally valued in our society? That’s where my mind is during this #satchat
A5 You have build from where students are- and not from where people think they should be. Capital letters and punctuation are sometimes all kids are ready for. Others are ready for robust vocabulary selections. Emphasis on grading screws this up routinely. #Satchat
A4 @Seesaw and @GoogleForEdu tools are great for encouraging Ss to read and write especially each others’ work! Also for struggling readers and writers and ELLs the @texthelp Read&Write extension is a must-have! #satchat
Record taxes were just collected under Trump's tax plan. But, we now have to pay MASSIVE interest on Obama's ~10 TRILLION debt that he accrued, so it'll be hard to get out of debt anytime soon. Thanks Obama.

https://t.co/Qk37tF7yAb heard the T's & we are excited to announce that Text-to-Speech 👄capabilities is now in-built in our platform‼️ Perfect for students to have read-aloud accommodations! 👌 Tag a T to let them know about this #inclusive new add-on! #tlap#ditchbook
A5: Assuming all students have been through RTI process and needs identified. Thinking Maps PD in our district supported teachers to be able to scaffold access to the content. I love using them and adding the ELL scaffold is even better. @ThinkingMaps#satchat
A5: This is mentioned in just about every single #satchat- “Know your Ss!”. Find out what kind of R&W activities they like best, what topics/genres interest them, etc.
A5 when we open the door to using tools of all kinds that support learners to access what they need to learn text to speech, speech to text, audio and video we create paths that allow us to see strengths of kids vs deficits #providechoice#satchat
I would add - history can be seen as dry, boring & nothing to do with the real world, or it can seem very connected to what's happening today. It all depends on how we teach it. #satchat
A5: Students need more individualized instruction to improve literacy. We can help by capping English class sizes (less students), providing more tutoring and remedial services, and after-school programs #satchat
Oh and use the data they collected on the trip or with the expert to inform a R/W/Speaking performance task. It can’t just be going to see it. #satchat
A4: @Flipgrid is a great tool for communication and sharing. Also incorporating the use of @Screencastify where students can record and explain their projects (or any day-to-day work). This gives another layer for the teacher to understand what the student has learned. #satchat
Please share my story. I almost quit teaching after 15 years, until I began to blog and use Twitter - so many great people here. We need to change the conversation about education. https://t.co/yCbrZO76fH#SatChat
Bill, checking in from Houston airport after a great #UCEA18 conference- reading and writing key for principals to model in how they provide relevant, reflective feedback following observations #satchat we need to provide more than just a checklist!
A5: Opportunities for interest-based activities, goal setting, and choice. Books in the hands of kids of interest. Students also benefit from being able to see a rubric in order to set a goal and then reflect and edit to improve. Writing is a process #satchat
A1: it means using science context to support ELA. Using common language, focusing on skills like annotating text to make meaning, synthesizing evidence, and using writing to communicate science ideas. Science and Engineering practices include writing. #satchat#allin4NB
We are in the process of including more meaningful experiences to spark interests in students. Next step- connecting reading and writing to these learning opportunities. So far, so good. Kids who were bored and unmotivated are now highly engaged! #satchat
A5: Choice boards are an engaging way of allowing Ss varied options in their assignments. Also, turning elements of learning into a game are great ways to motivate and encourage Ss. This is a given, but try to tailor assignments to Ss interests. #satchat
Q5: #Satchat scaffold small group projects with different team jobs...one student the leader, another notetaker, image creator & etc... If technology is used such as a Google slide student may submit Audio or video responses....they can event use Speech to text tool
A5. Back to voice & choice. Let students have a choice of books or materials within subject. Can they use a graphic novel? Can you get @Newsela to help? Will magazines do instead of peer-reviewed journals? /1 #satchat
I see that we now use the word “writing” as a euphemism for typing, speaking in a manner technology understands us to put words on a screen, and handwriting. I’m just not sure we all value those skills equally. #satchat
A6: This book was a huge help to me coming from a science context, it helped me find ways to support non-fiction reading and writing with specific practical digital graphic organizers. Highly recommended for any non literacy folks! #satchat#allin4NB
A5: We can conference with Ss about the interesting things they are reading, and give exact verbal feedback on their writing. This levels the playing field. Ss become active participants rather than passive recipients. #satchat
A5: English class sizes should really be no more than 15 students. To improve reading and writing students need individual instruction and timely feedback (English teachers cannot provide timely feedback with large class sizes) #satchat
Choice and engagement for reading and writing also needs to be there for teachers as well. What’s your passion? It is contagious in the classroom - https://t.co/E78rYmmiAu#Satchat
A5: Let Ss read! Get books in their hands. Offer magazines, newspapers, blogs. Give them diverse titles that offer a mirror & a window. Help them learn the art of book selection & let them choose. Let them quit books that don’t speak to them. Surround them with literacy #satchat
Q5: https://t.co/IQpLdDEqDd offers current event articles at five different Lexile levels ... many translated into Spanish. Content spans all disciplines. Great way to offer choice. #satchat
A5. @storycubes are AMAZING to engage reluctant readers! Use images to inspire creative, non-literal thinking or to help learners brainstorm elaborate backstories or worlds of limitless imagination. #Satchat
A5 Make it an typical anti-reading experience. Reading is typically individual & still. Make it less lonely w/ partnerships. Include movement w/ kinesthetic seating or wiggle breaks! This follows by informal teaching philosophy: When the bum is numb, the mind is dumb. #satchat
My history teacher taught us 20th century history - the origin of the two world wards, and the cold war. It has been such relevant and useful knowledge in my life #satchat

100% agree. It's overwhelming to them without scaffolding. I don't know how many times I've helped a student craft a thesis statement in my career. #satchat
Georgia, YOU DODGED A BULLET!
#StaceyAbrams owes more than $50,000 to the IRS and about $170,000 more in credit card and student loans, according to personal financial disclosures!
She would've bankrupted GA!

LAST #satchat QUESTION FOR TODAY
Q6: Can you point us in the direction of some best practice literacy resources that move students form good to great? #satchat
A5: Find ways to connect the reading/writing to them and their interests. Create fun & engaging hands-on activities, projects, experiences. Utilize their background knowledge in instruction. Give them multiple ways to demonstrate their learning. Be patient 😊 #satchat
A6: To move students from good to great, look for resources and opportunities to make literacy engaging, authentic, and relevant. The definition of literacy is evolving & the tools to make literacy real in classrooms are readily available #SatChat
A5 PLEASE consider the use of comics and graphic novels. The scaffolding is built right in and so many of us have learned to read through comics. After my teacher workshops, so many parents and students thank me as they learned to read this way. #satchat
Activision Blizzard wants to be their King Division and their audience engagement dropped a lot. Warcraft dropped early so they could include it in the 3rd or the results would have been worse.
OTOH, if you have stock puts after earnings, you made a ton
#satchat
A5: Struggling Ss need to listen to read aloud opportunities to be exposed to rich literature that they may otherwise miss out on. We may need to scribe for our writers so they know they have a writer’s voice. Mechanics come after finding their voice.#satchat
#Satchat Q5 when technology is integrated focused on objectives it holds the possibility to motivate those who struggle with reading & writing....takes the stress out for some students
Most important aspect of the "why" is that it's personal. We each have our own passions & talents. Each student needs to find their own "why." It's our job as Ts to help them in that.
I've spent a lot of time working w/ teachers the past few yrs so they can do this. #satchat

If teachers are to model writing for their students, they need support in discovering what experiences and ideas they have that are worth writing about. #satchat
Principals, take time each day to reflect, plan, and craft a daily e-mail that affirms students and staff, highlights important events, and helps the school community navigate important events #satchat via @ASCDhttps://t.co/pRg6c5AwVc
I agree. There needs to be an element of safety involved. I have worked hard to encourage risk taking and made some progress and am hoping to make more. #satchat
A6: I cannot live without Zoo-phonics®, Inc @Zoophonics. All students need phonemic awareness. It does not matter the age, that is where reading starts. SOUNDS. This resource should be known to all teachers K-12 because we have all had the non-reader. It's heartbreaking. #satchat
LAST #satchat QUESTION FOR TODAY
Q6: Can you point us in the direction of some best practice literacy resources that move students form good to great? #satchat
A6. The “Two Lit(eracy) Ladies” podcast is consistently excellent. As is “Literacy and Learning Centers for the Big Kids,” also by @LiteracyWorld. Basically anything literacy that she puts out is a home run. #CathEdSocial#SatChat
A5 for struggling readers and writers and ELLs the @texthelp Read&Write accessibility extension has tools that help Ss focus on text on a web page, define or translate unknown words, creates word suggestions in @googledocs when Ss are writing, and do much more! #satchat
Often teachers have "accessibility" tools on hand in the #edtech purchases the school chooses, but they are not in use. Some Ts may want to expand their repertoire of strategies but need a tutorial to get started. Where do they get that help? #satchat
A5 when we open the door to using tools of all kinds that support learners to access what they need to learn text to speech, speech to text, audio and video we create paths that allow us to see strengths of kids vs deficits #providechoice#satchat
I'm not knocking knowledge at all. I think it's vital. I'm rejecting the premise that students can't solve problems unless they have all the knowledge they need ahead of time. The beauty of knowledge is that the more you have, the more you realize you need to know. #satchat
In reply to
@Fultonofscience, @MsJWhiting, @donald_gately
Also; if technology ever failed; those who could hand write would have much more power than those who could only type or dictate. That’s where I get a little concerned on our reliance on technology. I love tech for sure; but it can fail us. Do we prep for that? #satchat
Enunciation? The issue isn't just for the device to understand and convert sounds to words, it is for the audience beyond the device to understand your meaning #satchat
Yes, many are. Time constraints, lack of knowledge about how to, etc. I would suggest something easier like Twitter first. It’s a lot like blogging. Then try to move on from there. #satchat
#Satchat Q5 when technology is integrated focused on objectives it holds the possibility to motivate those who struggle with reading & writing....takes the stress out for some students
If teachers (or students) feel hesitant in “putting themselves out there,” we can help them connect that sharing to their values. The question isn’t “How can teachers and students feel more comfortable sharing their work,” but “Why is sharing worthwhile?” #satchat
A6 differentiated book Clubs. Every kid has a club they belong to, books they can choose to read as a group, and set meeting times every week to do student led discussions. #satchat
The problem with this is it exacerbates the haves and the have nots since knowledge grows exponentially (Matthew Effect). Students must be taught the content before they can effectively/timely solve application/real world problems #satchat
The love of reading also starts from home. My 6 yr old started reading at the age of 4 and can't put her books down ever since! Hope it leads to a love of writing too! Here she is on a beautiful Sat morning #satchat
A6 Great writing is important, to the student-writer and in the world. For compelling prompts about important issues, check out the @yesmagazine student writing competition. https://t.co/TQtleIglMI#satchat
A5: I’m trying something new with one of my 1st graders this year. We can’t find suitable picture books about his interest (dirt bikes)so we’re writing one together. Each week we are going back and adding a layer of text.#satchat
Those are different skills (I think). Really then we are talking basic communication. Writing and reading are different to me than basic communication. Certainly they are tools for communication. #satchat
Seeking knowledge comes first, then the skills for finding it. Other skills come after that. Intrinsic motivation is essential to any learning #satchat

Whatever you do don’t retweet this video where Ivanka thanks "the Deputy Crown Prince for his vision, his hard work, and for the flawless execution of two amazing days here in Saudi Arabia. Hopefully the first of many many visits to come." Blood money. https://t.co/WMQY58jDxT
🙌Yes! 31 seniors in one class is too many. That's one big old truth about the quality of writing instruction. Even on a small scale, writing covers so much knowledge ground. When the class is huge, the task is...practically impossible.#satchat
It’s an awesome thing to see! Kids who were doing nothing can’t stop talking now! What a great thing! One student in particular is now going around and helping others. I’m fortunate to have staff who are doing great things. It’s awesome. #satchat#JoyfulLeaders
A6. I loved my SIOP training. Not only for ELLs...excellent strategies for all Ss...The way it's presented to us through webinars, chats, sharing strategies with educators across the country #satchat
A6 ahem - clears throat - I hear https://t.co/DlJiUZCv4j has a lot great resources for how to integrate comics in all classroom subject and levels. #satchat
And to ignite that fire, I have found #GeniusHour to be very successful. If the idea stems from the students and we give them the space and tools to explore, we just have to get out of their way. @gcouros#satchat
I forgot about that training! YES! I had it 9 years ago and it is such an integral part of what I do but it has been so effective and amazing! Thank you for reminding me. #satchat
A2: I think we need to be careful what type of reading/writing. As a business teacher, the writing style is different than what happens in an English classroom. I try to teach my students the difference. #satchat

This blog entry is a sad reminder of how devalued and isolated many teachers feel when they face limitless accountability (and blame) and very limited resources. As administrators, we have to create cultures that support excellence, wellness and risk-taking. #edLeaders#satchat

I dont think students should have all the knowledge before they solve a problem. If they do then that is just wasting their time bc they already know it
I think they should know enough to be able to fully solve problem with some difficultly in a reasonable amount of time #satchat
And right there you’ve covered reading and writing. Independence. You’ve honored his choice. Given him a way to express it. This effect will last long past this year. You’re amazing! #SatChat

Must prioritize voter id / reform and the wall
America will not get this until 2020 at the earliest
But
Need to keep America focused on this, with as few distractions as possible, until Republicans win back the house & hold the Senate & Presidency :)
#SatChat
People are not being told that the Republican Party is on track to pick up two seats in the U.S. Senate, and epic victory: 53 to 47. The Fake News Media only wants to speak of the House, where the Midterm results were better than other sitting Presidents.
A6: For me, it's all about backwards planning (ala Understanding by Design): What do my students need, and what do I need to do to get them where they need to be? From there, it's simply of finding creative ways to move them from good to great. #satchat
And as if that's not disturbing enough... here's the commercial.
