Hey hey #FLedChat! Michelle, Media Specialist from Daytona Beach just home from our school Christmas party.
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:07 PM EST
A1: The first thing that came to mind was the various types of religious ceremonies I have attended. Also traveling overseas. #FLedChat
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:07 PM EST
    Yay! Michelle! #FLedChat
    In reply to @kmichellehowell
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: Jumping right on this one, I experienced an Indian Dawali and a few other events that include lots of singing and dancing. It was an interesting experience, learned a lot. #fledchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: I know it may not seem like it was another culture, but this past summer I spent several days in Houston. There was some serious culture shock when I found myself in the middle of a Gay Pride event. #FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:08 PM EST

Where did you travel to overseas Kristin, if you don't mind sharing? #fledchat
    In reply to @KristinCHarr
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:09 PM EST
I've done that too. So fun, and great food :). #FLedChat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • hutselllearn Dec 20 @ 8:09 PM EST
#FLedChat a1: immersively? No. In books, all the time. In the stories of my students, when they share. I’ve traveled a bit but I still don’t think I can say I’ve fully experienced a culture other than my own—in bits and glimpses and invitations only.
    In reply to @FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:09 PM EST
Oh my yes the food, I think I took a few "to go" plates. #fledchat
    In reply to @KristinCHarr
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:09 PM EST
England and Italy. Surprisingly (to me at least) even England has lots of differences. #FLedChat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:10 PM EST
I used to take Indian dance lessons too. I loved it. #FLedChat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:10 PM EST
Ha! I love the point you are making here, that you don't have to travel far to experience culture. #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:10 PM EST
Oooo...I have yet to go to both places, I am excited about the learning opportunities to be had. #fledchat

    Hi there, Dene! #FLedChat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:12 PM EST
I think the interesting thing Cait is that we truly experience culture sometimes unknowingly...though I think we should be intentional about it :) #fledchat
    In reply to @hutselllearn, @FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:12 PM EST
Wow, well the next couple of questions may ask for more detail, but truly there is much to be gained from a cultural experience... #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • FLedChat Dec 20 @ 8:13 PM EST
Q2: Referencing question one, what were your feelings going into the cultural experience or environment? #fledchat
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:13 PM EST
Running late... Michelle, 9-11 English from Oklahoma #FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:13 PM EST

  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1. Let's try this again. I have traveled to the Bahamas, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Experienced a little of the culture. Want to go back and immerse myself. #FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2: Considering I had a general idea of what I was attending, I was nervous because I wasn't sure how things would go. Only knew a few people too. #fledchat
  • hutselllearn Dec 20 @ 8:14 PM EST
#FLedChat yes. After reading some replies I have to say I have participated in cultural experience outside my normal, but have not lived in a new culture. Also my toddler is sitting on my face.
    In reply to @dene_gainey, @FLedChat
  • MrPowley Dec 20 @ 8:14 PM EST
Hi #FLedChat. A1 I interned at the museum of Jewish Heritage and shared a room with an Orthodox Jewish person for a week. I learned so much!

  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:15 PM EST
I love the word "immerse." I think through the immersive process, we learn from "everything." It's like a heightened sense of awareness. #FLedChat
    • kmichellehowell - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:14 PM EST

  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:16 PM EST
Hey Adam, welcome to #fledchat That sounds incredible man. This was planned? How did you feel going into it?
    In reply to @MrPowley
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:17 PM EST
Ooooo....sounds intriguing. How long did you spend in these places? #fledchat
    In reply to @watersenglish
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:17 PM EST
A1 Also served in an urban middle school. Kids are kids everywhere. They will all make you proud and they will break your heart. #fledchat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:18 PM EST
Was there any uncertainty? Like what do I say? How do I act or respond? Is this wrong? What will they think of me? #fledchat
    In reply to @KristinCHarr
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:18 PM EST
    How cute! #fledchat OK
    In reply to @hutselllearn, @FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: I didn't realize I was in the middle of it, until I was in the middle of it. I was a little shocked by what constituted clothing, but otherwise I was fine. #FLedChat
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2 Going in, I was afraid I would do something stupid, accidentally insult someone & not even realize it. If I realize it, I can at least apologize profusely & never do it again. #FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:19 PM EST
I love that Michelle. I find it so powerful to experience something out of the norm. #fledchat
    In reply to @watersenglish
  • FLedChat Dec 20 @ 8:19 PM EST
Q3 will be coming down the chimney in one minute! #fledchat
  • MrPowley Dec 20 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2 I was excited to be at a museum but a bit nervous. Oddly as a rural boy I was more anxious about being in NYC! Looking back I was so ignorant of the culture. I actually asked why they didn't have cheeseburgers at a kosher deli 😞 it was a major growth experience #FLedChat
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:19 PM EST
At the religious ceremonies...yes, but at the dance classes, no because all the students were in the same boat as me. #FLedChat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:19 PM EST
Thank you! I am glad to be here. #FLedchat

    In reply to @hutselllearn, @dene_gainey, @FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:20 PM EST
Ha I think I remember you telling me a little of that. I guess there are times when there is no time than to just be in the moment. #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • FLedChat Dec 20 @ 8:20 PM EST
Q3: Again referencing question one, were your feelings the same as a result of the experience? How did your feelings change? #FLEdChat
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:20 PM EST
Getting out of your comfort zone is the best way to learn, and really the only way to grow. #FLedchat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:20 PM EST
Oh gosh, I tend to think about things like that a lot. Fear of the unknown, or maybe a little judgement. I think we can buffer that with intentional exposure, do you agree? #FLedChat
    In reply to @watersenglish
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
    Yes!! #FLedChat
    In reply to @dene_gainey, @watersenglish
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2. (Twitter is not being my friend tonight!) I was excited. Love experiencing new things, places, etc. #FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
I love your transparency here Adam. I can also admit my ignorance too, and innate desire to learn more and see more and experience more as a result... #fledchat
    In reply to @MrPowley
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3 After getting over my initial embarrassment after doing stupid things, I am grateful for the opportunity to have learned, to have my mind opened. My current Ss have benefited from all these past experiences. And I apologize to those Ss who had me before I learned. #FLedChat
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: Changes in level of knowledge, more appreciation, and some misconceptions addressed. #FLedChat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:22 PM EST
That's an interesting point. When you say "same boat," you mean starting at square one? or something else? #fledchat
    In reply to @KristinCHarr
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3. Oh, my yes! I would go back to each place in a minute! #FLedChat
  • KristinCHarr - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:23 PM EST
Yes, all with the same limited knowledge. I had taken dance before, so I kind of had an advantage. Classical ballet and Indian are similar in some ways. #FLedChat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:23 PM EST
So how would you say we as educators should move out of our comfort zones? Should we travel more? :) #fledchat
    In reply to @watersenglish
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:23 PM EST
What does intentional exposure mean in this context? #FLedChat I'm still learning...
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:23 PM EST
    I got you! #FLedChat
    In reply to @KristinCHarr, @watersenglish

So true that students benefit from our background experiences. #FLedChat
    In reply to @watersenglish

    I do understand! #FLedChat
    In reply to @KristinCHarr
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:24 PM EST
For me, it has been getting to know my students through daily writing exercises. #FLedchat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:24 PM EST
I would say it better this way maybe, being intentional about learning about other cultures and backgrounds. #FLedChat
    In reply to @watersenglish
  • FLedChat Dec 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
Q4 will be coming in on Santa's sleigh in one minute! #fledchat
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
You don't really even have to leave your ZIP code to get out of your comfort zone. You have kids right there in your classroom who think completely differently than you do, who have lives that are completely different from yours. #FLedchat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • MrPowley Dec 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3 I came from a small rural nearly 100% white town. College and moving helped me meet new people. Interning helped me understand another culture, at least a bit more. Made me more critical of many of my previous assumptions. #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3: My feelings about showing ones pride didn't change. We all should have that right. My feelings about clothing, now that's another story. Let's just say I don't think a chip bag equals a pair of pants. #FLedChat
  • hutselllearn Dec 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
#fledchat school is an unfamiliar cultural experience for many students. Especially when transitioning elem-mid-High. How do we help them pack their bags appropriately/prep them for new school culture?
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3: I felt invigorated as a result of my experience. I knew more than I had previously and it ignited a passion in me for further learning. #fledchat
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
That said, I would love to travel more. Wish I could afford to... #FLedchat oh wait! That's what they make books for.
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • FLedChat Dec 20 @ 8:26 PM EST
Q4: Do you feel it is important for students to have cultural experiences or experience a different environment? Why or why not? #fledchat
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:26 PM EST
I like that answer. I have to agree also that my students do reveal a lot about themselves and their culture through their writing. #FLedChat
    In reply to @watersenglish
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:26 PM EST
    BOOM! #fledchat

  • GuyCivics Dec 20 @ 8:27 PM EST
I used to teach in urban California and when I moved to Florida I was teaching kids who were living in a completely different world. I went from teaching kids of engineers to teaching kids that were working on family farms. #FLedChat

    In reply to @hutselllearn
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:27 PM EST
Yes! And asking a lot of questions of the people around you who know those cultures and backgrounds. Like your colleagues. And if you know your students and have good relationships with them, they will be happy to tell you what you need to know. #FLedChat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:28 PM EST
I love how these moments are used as teaching and learning experiences in your classroom. I mean, why not? #fledchat
    In reply to @watersenglish
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:28 PM EST
And isn't this the hope Kristin? I don't want to ever be the same, I want to get better. #fledchat

The kids will complain and say they hate the daily quick writes , but they also use that as a venue to share what they're going through. #FLedchat

For students to really learn about open mindedness they have to see from different viewpoints. A lot of students are growing up in a bubble and this hurts our democracy more than anything. #FLedChat
    In reply to @FLedChat
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4. I think it is important. Helps them learn that there isn't just one way to live & be happy. Broadens their world view. And hopefully helps them develop empathy for their fellow humans. #FLedChat
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:30 PM EST
Exactly! We can all learn from each other. Sometimes I think I learned more from my students and they do from me. #FLedchat
    In reply to @dene_gainey
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:30 PM EST
So your experience has clearly informed your present reality, would you say? I can pinpoint specific ways in which mine have. #fledchat

  • TG_Neil - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4: Yes, it is very important. Students deserve opportunities to make choices for themselves about their adult lives. Without these types of experiences they only get a small taste of life. #FLedChat
  • watersenglish Dec 20 @ 8:31 PM EST
If I do nothing else in my classroom, I want to at least have helped my students learn to empathize with others, particularly people who are not the same as them. #FLedChat
    In reply to @kmichellehowell
  • dene_gainey - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:31 PM EST
Interestingly enough, I think habits and training has a ton to do with culture and experiences...we have to share culture... #fledchat

And this is exactly why reading and writing are so important. It's not really about college and career ready. It's about being human and developing empathy for others. #FLedChat

World view! Boom! Globally-minded individuals. More well-rounded. Level headed. #fledchat
    • kmichellehowell - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4. I think it is important. Helps them learn that there isn't just one way to live & be happy. Broadens their world view. And hopefully helps them develop empathy for their fellow humans. #FLedChat
  • GuyCivics Dec 20 @ 8:36 PM EST
I don't ever live in the moment so there wasn't much initial reaction. I am a reflective person by nature. So weeks/months later I'm somewhat shocked and working on the fly to make adjustments. #FledChat
