Ok, here comes question number 1. Make sure you answer with the A1, A2... format. Let's talk protocols! #2ndchat #eduprotocols
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: I've not read the book but I know that when kids have a certain routine that becomes 2nd nature, they can focus on learning part, not the "how to do this" part. #2ndchat
  • jeaniekeating Aug 22 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 I have not read the book either. But I think when kids DON'T know what's coming next, that's what they're going to think about. By giving them routines, they can think about the lesson. #2ndchat
  • kbarbin55 Aug 22 @ 8:12 PM EDT

A1: Routines and protocols are the same and kids need them! #2ndchat
  • LannySaretsky Aug 22 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1 My answer too! It may take some time at the beginning but it paves the way to get to authentic learning later on #2ndchat
    • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: I've not read the book but I know that when kids have a certain routine that becomes 2nd nature, they can focus on learning part, not the "how to do this" part. #2ndchat
  • chuttonMES Aug 22 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1- I haven't read the book but the kids thrive in an enivornment where they know the routine and can focus on the learning not the listening to directions #2ndchat
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Make sure you add the hashtag #2ndchat to your tweets if you are not in a site that adds them for you!

  • Holtclass Aug 22 @ 8:14 PM EDT
a1- giving Ss a routine helps them feel comfortable and ready to work! #2ndchat

    In reply to @mhebern, @kbarbin55

Let's move on to question two and a little wisdom from @jcorippo to ponder. #2ndchat #eduprotocols
  • rchids Aug 22 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A1: routine allows students to know what to expect. If lessons are designed with the concept of routine applied to them then Ss will know what to expect and hopefully things will flow smoothly. #2ndchat
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Yes, that is so true. Even we adults experience that. Too much all at once and then nothing is gained! #2ndchat
    In reply to @chuttonMES
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:17 PM EDT

    Q2 #2ndchat Join in #Oredchat and #EduProtocols folks!
  • JohannMundy Aug 22 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Let's think of Q2 like this: Do you have a lesson where the kids are comfortable with the routine, so the content takes center stage? #2ndchat
  • jeaniekeating Aug 22 @ 8:21 PM EDT
#2ndchat can hear a pin drop! Stumped too By Q2!
  • TechWarriorKES Aug 22 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A1) Routine takes the anxiety away of what is next and they get to mentally prepare for what is coming. I always tell my kids Even at home when my kids were little I told them a list of things we were going to do and they were great..until I was off schedule! LOL. #2ndchat
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Can you give us an example? #2ndchat
    In reply to @mhebern
  • MrsWtech Aug 22 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: A very chicken before the egg or egg before the chicken kind of question to ponder. At times I think we have to build background with a task to be able to teach content. Kids can't build a Slides about content until they know how to create a Slides. #2ndchat
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:21 PM EDT
I KNOW we have examples but my mind is blank! #2ndchat
    In reply to @jeaniekeating
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: For me, when I take the time to really break down a lesson into the parts and think about the learner. It always goes better. And when I rely on established routines for parts of the lesson at least. #2ndchat
    In reply to @missmac100, @rchids, @JohannMundy, @jcorippo
  • jeaniekeating Aug 22 @ 8:22 PM EDT
I was thinking about Slides as well! #2ndchat
    In reply to @MrsWtech
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:22 PM EDT
Right but once they do, then we can create lots of activities using slides rather than a different tool that does similar but not exactly the same thing. #2ndchat
    In reply to @MrsWtech
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:22 PM EDT
Think of a successful lesson. Why was it so? #2ndchat What did you do?
    In reply to @jeaniekeating
  • TechVolak2 Aug 22 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2: when we followed the life cycle of a penguin in Antarctica....for about 35 days, they'd log in, look for an update on their penguin, color chart we kept. They were so focused on what was happening.... #2ndchat
  • JohannMundy Aug 22 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2: In the AM this week, we always do @SteveWyborney 's dots for subitizing numbers. The kids know the routine, the #s and # sentences take center stage. #2ndchat
  • jeaniekeating Aug 22 @ 8:23 PM EDT
OK. I see that. I have had the opposite- when every part of the lesson was new. And that didn't usually go well. So, now I try to keep the changes smaller. #2ndchat
    In reply to @mhebern, @missmac100, @rchids, @JohannMundy, @jcorippo
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2: Okay...I thought of one. I do these word sorts in Seesaw. Once kids know how to create them and use them they we can do them for math, reading, phonics, etc... Is that it? #2ndchat
  • JohannMundy Aug 22 @ 8:24 PM EDT
Slides is a tool and knowing how to use it is important. Are there activities you do with slides where the content takes center stage? #2ndchat
    In reply to @MrsWtech
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:24 PM EDT
    Great example! #2ndchat
    In reply to @JohannMundy, @SteveWyborney
  • LannySaretsky Aug 22 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2 I know lessons with Ipads or Chromebooks if the Ss automatically know the proper way to get them, handle them, get logged on, and navigate on them then they can easily get to the content part of things #2ndchat
  • jeaniekeating Aug 22 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2 We do different number sense routines in Math. When we start a new one, it is usually slow going for a few days. Once they get the routine, they definitely focus more on the content, and can get more complex in their thinking! #2ndchat
  • JohannMundy Aug 22 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Question three is up! Let's chat about the benefits of using protocols for our littles. #2ndchat #eduprotocols
  • MrsWtech Aug 22 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Yes! It's like coding. They figure out a pattern and start applying it in other places. I feel like when kids came to our 2nd grade classes they would have to do a whole lot of task building, but could apply content easier than other kids in other classes. #2ndchat
    In reply to @missmac100
  • TechVolak2 Aug 22 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3 They know what to expect, can focus on learning/new info, and everything flows better! #2ndchat
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:26 PM EDT
    Right! #2ndchat
    In reply to @MrsWtech
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:26 PM EDT
So you have 'protocols' as procedures that make the learning go smoother. How can you apply that to lesson design? To the lesson itself? #2ndchat
    In reply to @LannySaretsky
  • MrsWtech Aug 22 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Right! Even the most intuitive tool needs some explicit teaching, that's why we have youtube videos of Google Gurus spelling it all out. #2ndchat
    In reply to @jeaniekeating
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A3: Once you have the protocols in place, you can get to the learning part soon. You can find more time for extensions of learning as well. #2ndchat
  • Super2ndsMrsJ Aug 22 @ 8:27 PM EDT
#2ndchat A2 - Once we are in the routine for our Number Talks, the kids became excited by the challenge of how we would solve new problems in different ways. They embraced every student as a teacher and the strategies they came up with blew my mind!
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Number Talks are so great! #2ndchat
    In reply to @Super2ndsMrsJ
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:28 PM EDT
And when it mostly flows smoothly, they are better equipped to handle the rough spots with grace. #2ndchat
    In reply to @TechVolak2
  • missmac100 - Moderator Aug 22 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3: I also think if you have the protocols in place, it would make you as the teacher focus on the learning and not the constant blank slate. #2ndchat
  • chuttonMES Aug 22 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3 - Guided writing instruction allows for targeted support w/int framework while each Ss writes. Also promotes engagement, discussion & reflection. #2ndchat
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Once you learn how menus work, it gets easier, but having a guide is so handy when you need it! #2ndchat

I think itā€™s good for teacher too!! #2ndchat
    In reply to @jeaniekeating, @mhebern, @missmac100, @JohannMundy, @jcorippo
  • jeaniekeating Aug 22 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3 Whenever we start a new routine, I can tell the students are super focused on learning that routine. Their brains can't focus on too many things at once. #2ndchat
  • MrsWtech Aug 22 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: The more they use it, the better they can own it and apply it to other areas. I was saying in another tweet that it's like coding. Kids recognize patterns with tasks and apply them in other tools to make it easier to focus on content. #2ndchat
  • TechWarriorKES Aug 22 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A2 My 2nds were given a padlet with a famous American. It had some basic info/photos/videos and they were tasked with finding the objectives that were made into questions. They used books and online media and made their own connections to info. Learned 80% beyond obj. #2ndchat

#2ndchat A3 - I had several diagnosed with anxiety and/or on the spectrum. W/o fail the Ss did great IF the routines/protocols were kept, but that ONE time we had a new sub... I had many messages from the nurse and Ps I was missed! :(
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:31 PM EDT
Yes, it will. The kids have a head start on the task, so you don't have to teach them a new task EVERY time! #2ndchat
    In reply to @missmac100

NO, they cannot and sometimes I think we forget that when we plan lessons. :). #2ndchat
    In reply to @jeaniekeating
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:33 PM EDT
Exactly! How do we apply that concept to the lessons we teach? You are probably doing this already. When the pattern blocks come out, you have a process- right? So what is the process for pair share, collaborating on work, etc? #2ndchat

Q4 - Keep a Growth Mindset, just like we teach our Ss to not be afraid of trying and not always succeeding so must we. Just as important is modeling how to try again and learn from the experience. #2ndchat
  • mhebern Aug 22 @ 8:34 PM EDT
That is so cool when that happens! Congrat! How can you apply it to other areas of instruction? You are probably already planning them- right? :))) #2ndchat

A4: Growing as a teacher is important to me. I think looking at learning and lessons in new ways helps you and your students. #2ndchat

Absolutely. If you don't try and fail, you don't grow, right? #2ndchat
    In reply to @chuttonMES
  • LannySaretsky Aug 22 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4 I think for A. it's to ponder changes or trends that may come into society to be open to unseen possibilities. To try and break stuff is to not always follow things completely to the T. Make your own stuff is to always be innovating #2ndchat
  • jeaniekeating Aug 22 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4 Be open to change. Don't be afraid to make a mistake. We need to model this for our students as well. #2ndchat

It's like cooking in your kitchen. You'll try a recipe one time and think about all the ways to change it next time. Try an activity, so you can think about how to change it the next time around. #2ndchat

#2ndchat A5 - Honestly VBCPS has taken away most of our scripted curriculum and given us pacing guides. The only 2 left that come to mind are the annual Family Life lessons that must be scripted due to sensitive material. The other is our Making Meaning / Being A Writer currics.

The whole 'reinvent the wheel' doesn't have to seem daunting either. In a S centered class Ss can take more control and direction of their learning if they have a basic framework to work in. #2ndchat

A6: I think kids need MORE time to CREATE and not just consume. Studies show that these kids will do jobs that are not even created. Saying "we are preparing them for the future" is just not valid. They need to be creative to fit any opportunity that comes. #2ndchat
