#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.
Good evening awesome #2ndchat people! I am your guest moderator Meghan. We will be joined tonight by our special guest, Marlena Hebern, the co-author of the Eduprotocols Guide Book and we will be talking #eduprotocols !
Ha! I forgot my summer guilty pleasure! Marlena from CA and my summer guilty pleasure was a little 4 day getaway in Mammoth, Calif- up in the mountains behind Yosemite. #2ndchat
@TechWarriorKES
Hi All, Michael here, Instructional Technology Specialist in Virginia Beach, VA. Guilty summer pleasure...eating out anytime I want! LOL #2ndchat
A1: I've not read the book but I know that when kids have a certain routine that becomes 2nd nature, they can focus on learning part, not the "how to do this" part. #2ndchat
A1 I have not read the book either. But I think when kids DON'T know what's coming next, that's what they're going to think about. By giving them routines, they can think about the lesson. #2ndchat
Thankful for activities that allow students to see how much they have in common with one another! Successful Frayer a Classmate šš¼ #usdlearns#eduprotocols#2ndchat
A1: I've not read the book but I know that when kids have a certain routine that becomes 2nd nature, they can focus on learning part, not the "how to do this" part. #2ndchat
A1- I haven't read the book but the kids thrive in an enivornment where they know the routine and can focus on the learning not the listening to directions #2ndchat
A1: routine allows students to know what to expect. If lessons are designed with the concept of routine applied to them then Ss will know what to expect and hopefully things will flow smoothly. #2ndchat
A1) Routine takes the anxiety away of what is next and they get to mentally prepare for what is coming. I always tell my kids Even at home when my kids were little I told them a list of things we were going to do and they were great..until I was off schedule! LOL. #2ndchat
A2: A very chicken before the egg or egg before the chicken kind of question to ponder. At times I think we have to build background with a task to be able to teach content. Kids can't build a Slides about content until they know how to create a Slides. #2ndchat
A2: For me, when I take the time to really break down a lesson into the parts and think about the learner. It always goes better. And when I rely on established routines for parts of the lesson at least. #2ndchat

@missmac100, @rchids, @JohannMundy, @jcorippo
Right but once they do, then we can create lots of activities using slides rather than a different tool that does similar but not exactly the same thing. #2ndchat
A2: when we followed the life cycle of a penguin in Antarctica....for about 35 days, they'd log in, look for an update on their penguin, color chart we kept. They were so focused on what was happening.... #2ndchat
A2: In the AM this week, we always do @SteveWyborney 's dots for subitizing numbers. The kids know the routine, the #s and # sentences take center stage. #2ndchat
OK. I see that. I have had the opposite- when every part of the lesson was new. And that didn't usually go well. So, now I try to keep the changes smaller. #2ndchat

A2: Okay...I thought of one. I do these word sorts in Seesaw. Once kids know how to create them and use them they we can do them for math, reading, phonics, etc... Is that it? #2ndchat
A2 I know lessons with Ipads or Chromebooks if the Ss automatically know the proper way to get them, handle them, get logged on, and navigate on them then they can easily get to the content part of things #2ndchat
A2 We do different number sense routines in Math. When we start a new one, it is usually slow going for a few days. Once they get the routine, they definitely focus more on the content, and can get more complex in their thinking! #2ndchat
Yes! It's like coding. They figure out a pattern and start applying it in other places. I feel like when kids came to our 2nd grade classes they would have to do a whole lot of task building, but could apply content easier than other kids in other classes. #2ndchat
#2ndchat A2 - Once we are in the routine for our Number Talks, the kids became excited by the challenge of how we would solve new problems in different ways. They embraced every student as a teacher and the strategies they came up with blew my mind!
A3 - Guided writing instruction allows for targeted support w/int framework while each Ss writes. Also promotes engagement, discussion & reflection. #2ndchat
A3 Whenever we start a new routine, I can tell the students are super focused on learning that routine. Their brains can't focus on too many things at once. #2ndchat
A3: The more they use it, the better they can own it and apply it to other areas. I was saying in another tweet that it's like coding. Kids recognize patterns with tasks and apply them in other tools to make it easier to focus on content. #2ndchat
A2 My 2nds were given a padlet with a famous American. It had some basic info/photos/videos and they were tasked with finding the objectives that were made into questions. They used books and online media and made their own connections to info. Learned 80% beyond obj. #2ndchat
#2ndchat A3 - I had several diagnosed with anxiety and/or on the spectrum. W/o fail the Ss did great IF the routines/protocols were kept, but that ONE time we had a new sub... I had many messages from the nurse and Ps I was missed! :(
Question four is all about growth. Marlena has some great insights to share in the Eduprotocols Field Guide about ways we can all be better teachers. #2ndchat#EDUProtocols
Exactly! How do we apply that concept to the lessons we teach? You are probably doing this already. When the pattern blocks come out, you have a process- right? So what is the process for pair share, collaborating on work, etc? #2ndchat
Q4 - Keep a Growth Mindset, just like we teach our Ss to not be afraid of trying and not always succeeding so must we. Just as important is modeling how to try again and learn from the experience. #2ndchat
That is so cool when that happens! Congrat! How can you apply it to other areas of instruction? You are probably already planning them- right? :)))
#2ndchat
A4 I think for A. it's to ponder changes or trends that may come into society to be open to unseen possibilities. To try and break stuff is to not always follow things completely to the T. Make your own stuff is to always be innovating #2ndchat
#2ndchat A4 - My 1st thought, #TLAP !! My 2nd thought was this past year for me. I tried flex seating, kinda ditched the text books, embraced going 1:1, and each month explored new #edtech with my 2nds! We learned so much together. #growthmindset#lifelonglearning#failandgrow

So true. Sometimes it is necessary to reinvent the wheel! There may be nothing already made that fits the students in my class, and THAT is who I am teaching. #2ndchat
Yes, we do. And it isn't always easy. Well... it is easy when things go our way. Super hard when they are falling apart. But that is when you have to stick with it and keep going! #2ndchat
It's like cooking in your kitchen. You'll try a recipe one time and think about all the ways to change it next time. Try an activity, so you can think about how to change it the next time around. #2ndchat
Joining a little late #2ndchat still on vacation as well. A5: It's important to be tuned into your Ss and their needs and move the lesson and learning accordingly to meet the learners needs.
#2ndchat A5 - Honestly VBCPS has taken away most of our scripted curriculum and given us pacing guides. The only 2 left that come to mind are the annual Family Life lessons that must be scripted due to sensitive material. The other is our Making Meaning / Being A Writer currics.
The whole 'reinvent the wheel' doesn't have to seem daunting either. In a S centered class Ss can take more control and direction of their learning if they have a basic framework to work in. #2ndchat
A5: When I tried morning work because everyone else was. The kids that knew it finished in 2 seconds & the strugglers couldn't do it at all. Not a good use of our time. #2ndchat
Question 6 is the last question of our chat! Eduprotocols are all about integrating the 4 Cs. Which of the 4 Cs could our 2nd graders use more of? #2ndchat#EDUProtocols
A4- I LIVE and BREATH risk taking to the point of which failure is just an opportunity to learn. The more risk you take the more treasure you will discover! I do not fear failure, I EMBRACE IT!! #2ndchat
A5 When I always had good old word searches as a time filler when Ss got done their spelling sheet back in the day when I had a one size fits all 'spelling program' #2ndchat
A6 Having a hard time picking one! I'll go with creativity... because they often try too hard to find the "right " answer, instead of being open... #2ndchat
A6: I think there is too much independent work and not enough learning that involves collaboration. I can't think of any job that you do in isolation. Kids need practice now. #2ndchat
A6 - Collaboration is the answer, collaboration is the key - did anyone sing it! Maybe I'm too old. Such a powerful tool to help Ss engage, learn to communicate and LISTEN to one another! #2ndchat
A6: I think kids need MORE time to CREATE and not just consume. Studies show that these kids will do jobs that are not even created. Saying "we are preparing them for the future" is just not valid. They need to be creative to fit any opportunity that comes. #2ndchat
I just found out more about Flip Grid! Iām excited to have students use it for video book reviews. š #2ndchat See Saw would be great for that too!
Amen sister! If kids can't give and take in a collaborative atmosphere...there will be rough waters ahead. They learn through their failures, but we have to give them that opportunity! #2ndchat
I like 'words their way' where Ss are all at different levels doing word study that focuses more on spelling patterns/irregularities. I have my Ss do activities that are creative combined with spelling/word study #2ndchat
Woot Woot! Thanks everyone for joining us and a special thanks to @mhebern for helping me steer this ship tonight and for writing an amazing book! #2ndchat#EDUProtocols
Thanks to @JohannMundy & @mhebern for getting us thinking and for hosting tonight! It was a GREAT chat! Now, #2ndchat, we need to think of some ideas to try out in our classrooms and talk about it!
Yes I did I found they are a lot more comfortable with some of silent 'e', two vowels go walking, etc. kind of patterns than before I started with it #2ndchat
I so loved the answers and discussions tonight! Great job everybody! Best of luck as you try some new things, and get those kids 4C-ing! Let us know if you need help with protocols- we are here! @jcorippo#2ndchat#EduProtocols
