hi Courtney. Greetings from grey-ish Seattle
Due to tech props, wasn't quite 5 min but welcome to ! I'm subbing in for & joined by to moderate
Hello ! Co-moderating from San Jose, CA.
Be sure to tell us where you're from & how many days with students left for you. . I'm Kelly from Ontario. 27 days left.
Hello Lara from bremerton Wa
Hello! K teacher from Pa.
Christine from AB with 13 Kinder days left!
Courtney WA, 20 days left
Rea from San Jose, CA. 11 days, with a glorious 4 day weekend ahead.
Hi Jessica! Are you in the home stretch for your school year?
13 days with kiddos left...too much fun left to do!
Amy here, ECE admin in the Canada. Both way too many and way too few days left!
Hello!! I'm Kelsey from Florida!! I try not counting down the days! Maybe 12 or 13 left?
I hear you Amy. 27 seems like a lot but so much still to do. Hard to believe.
Tonight we are talking Growth Mindset. Q1: Define the term "growth mindset"
Awesome. My principal just bought me Carol Dwecks' book!
She has some of the best stuff! I would love to read that book!!
Liane from Abbotsford B.C. In and out as I'm making dinner & cleaning.I don't know how many days are left.I don't want to know.
A1) means that change is possible and ideas can be fluid
Hi I'm Dawn. I teach K-5 science in Indy. We have 9 days left.
Faige from Los Angeles. As a sub in two different story schools one ends June 8th and the other June 8th or 9th
A1 A growth mindset is one that demonstrates persistence
Hi Liane! Did you have a good Victoria Day (it's a holiday today in the Canada in case US friends don't know).
A2: learning takes effort, and hard work. Learn from your mistakes, and persevere!
Are you enjoying retirement & subbing Faige?
well said. My Ss r learning about persistance power when reading!
A1: a commitment to seeing the positive and learning opportunity in any situation
I went to school and cleaned. So much paper everywhere!! You?
A1 Growth mindset: you're willing and want to try
A1: being the smartest or fastest or best isn't as meaningful as the growth one makes. Growth shows perseverance and strength
Persistence power.. I like that!
Worked most of the day on assessment prep of course!
Does NE1 else struggle w/ the fact that some Ss come in with the mindset they have to b the best?
Well said, Kelsey. Interesting to take note of which students still believe that finishing first equals the best
Love the subbing. Still figuring out the retirement LOL
A1: Moving forward, problem solving and trying when struggles arise. I think that's what I think when I hear "growth mindset"
Very much so! And very afraid to make mistakes. Takes a lot of work to get them be brave enough to make mistakes.
Growth vs fixed mindset refers to what you believe about ability - is it innate/fixed, or result of effort?
Yes. I struggle with this concept a bit too.
I struggle with that...Sadly, much of those beliefs are brought upon the parents, who don't see it as a problem.
Ah yes. Adding that to my "to do" list.
Growth mindset has also become HUGE buzzword, and is often misused/misunderstood.
Can't wait to watch that. Title sounds like just what I need to share with my Ss!
This is why I struggle. I'm not into the latest and greatest and then good bye.
Thank you for pointing this out...I want a philosophy 2 b useful. not just catchy
learning is a work in process! Not all Ss are the same.
Yes. Yes, and yes. Spend all year talking about the importance of an eraser. Mistakes are glorious, students!!
yes. I LOVED the vid. about mistakes and growth mindse. I bel, they r on youtube they are awesome.
Impt to remember - drive to be best/1st is also developmental. V. normal for 5yos to covet 1st. Not nec indicative of mindset.
it is disheartening and in the long run causes anxiety and disappointment.
Ugh...strugglign with Tweetdeck tonight.....sorry if I miss something
Thank you for saying that. I'm growing weary of buzz words.
I agree. Not interested in competing with anyone and everyone. That is not what I consider a growth mindset
Great points. This is definitely something I'd like to look into.
I find it more so with my Gr1s than my Kinders this year. They're learning they don't need to be perfect though
i cant see any of the questions. Can someone retweet.
Yup whether to the drinking fountain, bathroom or on the soccer field! https://t.co/ILnFHv8GgG
Impt to remember - drive to be best/1st is also developmental. V. normal for 5yos to covet 1st. Not nec indicative of mindset.
Stopping by to say hello to all my Kinder friends!
Jumping in here - just finishing up family dinner.
I struggle bc often, once a thing has become buzzword, it bears little resemblence to orig concept/theory/rsrch.
I need growth mindset spelled out as it relates to Gilmore Girls.
We talk a lot about our brain growing when we make mistakes! They love that idea.
So very true & important to remember! https://t.co/h4IM27xZAD
learning is a work in process! Not all Ss are the same.
Developmental drive to be 1st is relate to cognitive development of sorting/categorizing skills. Making sense of world.
would some1 please RT Q2?
Q2: Talk about any connection you see between the curriculum and mindset as a general term.
Is growth mindset more about understanding ability to grow or more about being able to handle failure? Am hearing both
Until what age is this normal development.
Fixed: Rory believes her need for coffee is innate. Growth: Rory believes w/practice, she can drink more coffee.
yes. I see that more and more.
Hi Matt. Nice seeing you back on
Complicated question! But usually evolves as understanding of categories becomes more complex.
A2 Is it about reflection on the process and being able to be metacognitive about progress?
R u taking about Ss being reflective or Ts?
Ss and Ts! People in general, I guess.
A2: my mindset was that curriculum in general was overrated. Lesson plans too.
A1: I thought growth mindset was about assessments showing a year of progress. am i confused?
I think that we r having 2 teach a generation how to understand learning.
I think the article was aimed at adults coaching children about having a growth mindset
Q2: it's all in the eye of the beholder. set up your classroom to be open minded & make curriculum more engaging for Ss.
Are you following the hashtag? Questions are all on the tag!
Also, if you read Dweck, it's about praising kids on effort not intelligence or skill.
I don't think is about assessments at all. It'sabout the belief syst. in classroom that Ss are capable.
Don't think growth/fixed is one or the other. Varies w/circumstances & resilience to challenges /struggles & successful outcomes
I think there can be too much of a good thing here. Dou think amt of effort is GL dependent?
Everything about being back on is making me SO HAPPY.
Any particular categories? Finding transition for my Gr1s very challenging.
so if a kid can succeed with minimal effort they don't get as much praise as those that try harder?
Has Q 3 been tweeted yet?
because I managed to incorporate Gilmore Girls... right?
No, still praise effort to go further.
Q3: What types of flaws could be present in Dweck's home study of the young children?
I feel like GIlmore Girls & is a match made in heaven.
touché!! This is where differentiating instruction and expectations for Ss is important.
we have to be careful of praise. I found kids want (and benefit) from our attention. Not necessarily praise
A3) A flaw is that effort is not only part of Ss success. metioned differentiating is impt so Ss can go further.
Absolutely. If I say I love one student's art work, 6 other Ss ask if I love theirs too.
I can't fine any mention of home study in the link. Am I missing something?
That is a valid point Matt. I try to avoid saying “you’re so smart/artistic” & try for “you’re working so hard” etc
"Praise" can be as much of a buzz word as any of the others.
A3b) feedback 4 Ss has to b meaningful. "I love it" is not always appropriate. Ss can't lrn from this.
Sitting next & listening to them. That relationship so vital. Helping where needed ZPD (Vygotsky) https://t.co/EHL3ybIEv1
we have to be careful of praise. I found kids want (and benefit) from our attention. Not necessarily praise
especially when it's one/two words and lacks any sort of meaning. Good job.
Just to stir the pot: are we being too hard on ourselves? Will world end if we call a child smart?
No, definitely not! But I get the point that kids who think they’re smart, may not put as much effort
correct, I love your artwork is shallow. Giving attention noticed something about them
Maybe. But mostly I feel sad for the kids who never hear that.
No. Like any kind of feedback we must be puposeful. I use the word smart.
HELP WHY CAN I NOT FIND THE HOME STUDY MENTIONED IN Q3???
I also like 2 say "What a smart choice," instead of "ur smart."
what pot? Does it have cookies. I like cookies.
yes! Not labeling them this way.
have you tried The Googles
In French immersion, we say "Bravo!" a lot. I like it.
That is the one I am reading. There is no mention of home study.
"Smart" not issue. But when kinder feels it's not truthful because of overuse, I wonder. I've said smart & clever & survived.
Sorry, there must have been a mix up of articles.
in Spanish immersion we say Oralé
Gotcha. No worries if it is technical difficulty. More worried that I was having reading difficulty.
Q4: What do teachers risk by not promoting a growth mindset in their classrooms?
Nope - all me! Bad night to have tech issues!!
A4) we risk having Ss who never feel successful
Sorry . Q3 didn't line up - I think article I sent was wrong one & didn't match Q3. Oops! Bad night for tech issues!!
I read the Huffington Post article.
Shame on me for tweeting a question that lead to more confusion!
Hello friends. I have missed our kinder-fellowship.
We miss you too! I dreamt the other night that , & I visited you!
Always a good article even if it is the wrong one!!
Hi Jon! Happy Honu Day!! And hello
Hi Michelle! So nice to see you!!!
MY and ARE BOTH HERE. EVERYTHING IS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD.
that would be most wonderful! On the bus!
hello Jon, missed you here as well
Oh, would love to be on the bus!
Ducking out early good night!
Q5: How did you feel about the last paragraph of the article? Why?
Tonight in my happy thoughts book, I am going to write that and both came to and we were all reunited.
Can you send links to both articles discussed. I'm not sure which one I read? Will read later Thx
I’ll get the correct link from & get it sent to . Sorry for confusion.
I hear there's a little reunion happening. I can't stay but stopping in to say hello! 💕
EVERYTHING IS AWESOME! (But I miss you!)
. Well everyone who is here this week should definitely come back next week!
Thanks Heidi! Last year was my 1st graduating class that received their letters. So FUN!
THIS IS WHAT I AM SAYING, , ! https://t.co/uH0M3dUnYY
. Well everyone who is here this week should definitely come back next week!
For sure! 1st time back in a while. Thx 4 getting me back in - even if my job hasn’t been stellar
Matt! It has been SO LONG!
Just want to say thanks for making this an eventful first time experience, co-moderating
Growth mindset always. Don't use words that limit. Use words that challenge, encourage, and inspire.
Temple school I sub at. Saw examples of mindset in different areas of learning over period of time https://t.co/eQ99M0VIS7
Well peeps - it’s been great, albeit a little confusing. Pls be sure to come back next week - EVERYONE!
