Hey Adam! How's it going?
Brad from Minnesota joining .
Q1 What area of your life needs a shift from being the bystander to becoming more heroic?
Jeff, HS Eng. from NJ. What's up everyone?
I always look forward to each week's to refill the "positive bucket" and share reflections with friends!… https://t.co/NeD6sJ1jLK
John, HS principal, Riverton, WYO. here til swim practice ends
Checking in from the mitten and ready to go ... Let's do this
RT
Q1 What area of your life needs a shift from being the bystander to becoming more heroic?
A1 I think I need to find that balance between when it is a good time to stay above the fray and when it is time to speak out.
A1 I need to be more involved in Ss extra curricular activities at school. I ask about their events, but I don't always attend.
A1 increasing communication is a goal for me this yr. More process & protocol. https://t.co/z8DdjAfclx
Q1 What area of your life needs a shift from being the bystander to becoming more heroic?
A1: I think it's more about encouraging others to bias toward action regularly and providing some structure to do that.
A1: Need to work on keeping myself in balance with helping the team succeed and taking on too much. Very difficult shift.
A1 - As an educator married to an educator whom are both trying to b good parents - time with my husband is a bystander
A1.2 has a quote that I stole "You take the risk, I'll take the blame!"
A1 I need to be more of a champion for what I know works in my class and show it to other Ts.
I feel that same sentiment. That balance is very important.
I definitely feel this way a lot. It's tough.
A1 Learning how to have Conversations in all aspects of life, not just professional.
A1.2 I'm also working on being more involved with Ss. I've missed that. I work with stuco every wk now & take the field trips!
A1: Need to keep that balance in mind - fitness, sleep & laughter ALWAYS required to be optimally mindful
A1: It is important for us to find the gaps in learning and opportunities- & close these gaps- if we do not we are bystanders
Yes! How do see this happening? Invite them in? Chat over lunch?
A1: I'm not sure. I don't feel like a bystander about anything in particular, yet nor do I feel particularly heroic...
Sharing the awesome is very important for all of us. https://t.co/PV5Be2WmeR
A1 I need to be more of a champion for what I know works in my class and show it to other Ts.
I often find myself in this boat. Having opinion is important, but recognizing when to let it go is too.
Many new ppl here tonight- make sure to connect and build your PLN
Yes! Teach individuals not a group. Each one Student may different needs. https://t.co/AWMF8Xnzlt
A1: It is important for us to find the gaps in learning and opportunities- & close these gaps- if we do not we are bystanders
A1: I'd like to try harder to incorporate more authentic assessments, field trips, and outside opportunities into my classes
I'm gradually embracing the successful me, less bystander, not heroic yet. Always balancing the different parts of life.
Make it visible! Great plan!
Q2 In regards to Q1, how will you make that shift?
It has been great. Principal pays for a roaming sub once a month to facilitate in-house walks...
I'm a fence sitter for decision making, so maybe I could be the hero of my own decision making? ;)
A1 I need to work on being more confident.
RT Q2 In regards to Q1, how will you make that shift?
A2 It needs to be a priority. Pick one school event a week. Attend one game for each sport, one concert etc.
Positive Deviance is crucial Deviate from the status quo!
A2 Reflection and prayer are the best ways for me to center myself on what is the right thing to do and how to do it.
Both are healthy! Keep it up, Rod!
A2 Balance and not take people for granted! Be grateful for the ones along for the ride- professionally and personally!
There are limits. Deviating from the status quo can leave you looking for a job!
A2: By building a pipeline of practitioners and responsible innovators using 3 prong approach: PD, Change Management, Communication
A2 Focusing on student growth and taking risks.
A2: Back to my regular podcast walks, writing & reaching out to friends/spouse/fellow Spartans for good times!
A2: Keeping more big rocks in my bucket and taking out more small rocks. Be willing to say "No" when appropriate and necessary.
A2: Continued reflection, looking inward, conversations with the like-minded. Reading Resonant Leadership https://t.co/9TDdD514Xo
A2: Be vigilant and keep my eyes open for opportunities. Encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities.
"I'll never let go." - Rose DeWitt Bukater
Walt, MS principal from SE MI. In for a bit.
Q3 Every roadblock suggests a new route. How will you shift to overcome the roadblocks?
Having people to encourage our Ss is often what keeps them going.
A1-I have to remind myself that being a bystander is NOT meddling. The Ss need a voice & sometimes we're all they've got.
A1: I need to be more of a heroic husband. Wife stays home with kids all day and that is not easy. Show more appreciation.
RT

RT Q3 Every roadblock suggests a new route. How will you shift to overcome the roadblocks?
Adrian, music edu from South Georgia, mostly lurking and looking for inspiration. Lots of likes going out!
A2.2 Never heard anyone say, "All was great til I took time to think it through, reflecting screwed everything up!"
A3 By keeping Ss at the center of all decisions. It's the only thing that should guide our path.
A3 Sometimes you need to do a personal inventory to grow and change, other times you simply may have to persevere.
A3 Every roadblock is an opportunity to a new beginning. Focus on the solution and don't be afraid to think "outside of the box"
A3: Don't sweat the small stuff. Take each hurdle as a chance for growth & don't become discouraged when they arrive in abundance.
A3: Be mindful of how I create my own roadblocks & unblock myself! It's always a choice. Others provide learning opportunities.
A2: Daily gratitudes, do little things, provide her more me time which means work at work and be present at home w/ family
A3: Adjust route, but remain focused on destination.
A3 Positive deviants are pretty experienced at re-routing. We keep student learning as our focus and our internal GPS finds a way.
A3 Learning, growth, goal completion are rarely achieved in a straight line. Expect the roadblocks.
A3: Roadblocks sometimes require a shift and other times a push. Have vision, don't apologize for it, and take action.
A3 Know that it's OK to fail or make mistakes along the way. Have the courage to take the first step!
"Expect the roadblocks" and be prepared with a new route https://t.co/F09T0tIfCW
A3 Learning, growth, goal completion are rarely achieved in a straight line. Expect the roadblocks.
A3 GET GRITTY about everything including especially relationships - not just professional tasks
A3: Get out the axe or the chainsaw? You can either go around or barge through; both require time and effort beyond expectations.
A3.2: I would argue that sometimes the more heroic path is not rerouting, rather pushing on the system to pave the way for others.
clear vision always brings you back and finds other ways!
A3: I tend to be a planner, so hopefully I'll see roadblocks before I hit them. If I do, use my PLN and other Ts to get around
I am enjoying the parallels between your answer and mine. You are more eloquent! :)
A3: Mindset: "Where we're going, we don't need roads." On board by re-framing challenges ... https://t.co/0Ye79WJzSY
A3: Expect roadblocks as part of change process. Be ready to reflect & use your creativity & innovation to do what's best 4 kids.
Q4 Do you know others with a fixed mindset? How will you help to create the necessary shifts to a growth mindset?
A3: Schedule my priorities and not prioritize my schedule. I have scheduled work nights and work free nights. Never been more busy!
I've been a planner and learned that planning too far proved to be a roadblock. I needed to be flexible for my learners.
Get gritty.

A3 GET GRITTY about everything including especially relationships - not just professional tasks
Im excited to be having a workshop day this Fri that honors Ts choice & voice. Hoping to build on/improve our
A3 Use to spend time with husband growing professionally - what road block?😀

A3 Positive deviants are pretty experienced at re-routing. We keep student learning as our focus and our internal GPS finds a way.
A4: Others? Sometimes, it's ME I need to remind out of a fixed mindset.
A4 I listen. Really listen. And share. And encourage. And preach growth mindset to fellow Ts and Ss like it's the best thing ever!
A4
Build relationships
Model
Be positive
Create opportunities for practice
Persevere
Totally. You can't plan too far ahead bc you're ignoring the probability that not everything will work out to plan
A3 Never, ever quit. showing/sharing of roadblocks & overcoming them is very important as a leader or T https://t.co/CLJmilmcyb
RT
Q3 Every roadblock suggests a new route. How will you shift to overcome the roadblocks?
A4: Sometimes "Seeing Is Believing". We are starting to facilitate tours one innovative school at a time. https://t.co/4Y4vaUVxYf
A3 We all have roadblocks and barriers. Expect them! You'll feel down for a bit, n that's ok. But stand up and grow.
Dave in Iowa joining at halftime.
A4: Ask a lot of open-ended questions and then step away slowly. Check back later with kindness to see how they are doing.
A4 building positive relationships has to come before you can influence shifts in thinking
A4: do not allow fixed mindset to grow, multiply & weigh us down.Be nice, be a pro & listen so I can lead https://t.co/q8iGlAr6J2
A4: Don't pressure those with the fixed mindset to change. Model and discuss what a growth mindset has done to benefit Ss learning.
A4: Conversations, articles, books, examples, data.
Persistence.
A4: Change mindsets by modeling, being explicit. Coach for change. Active listening and powerful questions to spark new thinking
A4 Unhappy people have a fixed mindset period. Modeling positivity and showing that we can always learn!
A4 Challenge the mindset and support the growth!
People need to know you care before they dare... ?

A4 building positive relationships has to come before you can influence shifts in thinking
Great to see you again, Dave. Hope all is going well.
A4: Celebrate as a group when your team acts using a growth mindset.
A4: Patience, listening, baby step suggestions. If something is attached with superglue, you can't rip it off.
Q5 Sharing leadership with Ss, Ps, & Ts is a shift in mindset. How are you sharing leadership?
A4 Support small step(s) in right direction.
Can't force them into submission - baby steps is the right process. Keep at it. https://t.co/9vi8pGQdIf
A4: Patience, listening, baby step suggestions. If something is attached with superglue, you can't rip it off.
RT Q5 Sharing leadership with Ss, Ps, & Ts is a shift in mindset. How are you sharing leadership?
A4 Udstand the person/situation. We are all human and tch'ing can be frustrating. A lil empathy and encouragement goes a long way
A5 Give teachers a piece of your staff meeting. Let them be the expert and model their own learning.
That is great to hear when the staff has embraced the growth mindset. Loved when T's did that.
A5: I present across the midwest and share my experiences with Ts and Admin and feedback and assessment.
A5: Shared decision making, whenever possible.
A5: Give students choice, challenge peers to lead open doors for others and step back to watch.
Q5 Simple communication goes a long ways! Building trust with S, P and T leads to successful culture with everyone on the bus!
A4: Go where the opportunities (open minds) are, gain allies for the idea, tool, shift, and the allies will lead the change
A5 Challenge others to take risks and try new things, while supporting and encouraging them along the way!
A5 schoolwide leadership roles held by students that in the past have been held by staff i.e. Greeters, assemblies, beautification
A5 Making them a part of the decisions when possible and asking opinions - Ss love being consultants. Transformational Leadership
Key to success! https://t.co/sfFM4c9MWS
A5 Challenge others to take risks and try new things, while supporting and encouraging them along the way!
A5: Lead by observing. observing Ts in action. Support mentorship, write & engage in public speaking opps
Growth mindset requires wisdom. You can't change just to change or you will be toast.
A5: Ss led conferences and the use of leadership notebooks. Keeps the Ss in charge of their learning and what they need work on.

A5 schoolwide leadership roles held by students that in the past have been held by staff i.e. Greeters, assemblies, beautification
A5: Give opportunities & supports for success."Aptitude does not create opportunity. Opportunity creates aptitude." - Norman Kunc

challenge & support

A5 Setting s up to follow and track their own learning and growth. Including s in setting learning targets.
A5: My team shares leadership by sometimes presenting at conferences with a team of Ss, Ts and Admins.
This month I will be learning at and

Q6 Is your environment supportive & reflective? How will you shift yourself & your team in this direction?
If you have a fixed mindset these days you will be left behind. Have to blend the good of the old ways with the new.
RT Q6 Is your environment supportive & reflective? How will you shift yourself & your team in this direction?
RT
Q6 Is your environment supportive & reflective? How will you shift yourself & your team in this direction?
need more info on "self reporting" As simple as it sounds? Context. DM me ... Want more
A6: We are becoming more reflective and supportive - building TRUST is the key to moving forward.
A6 My environment is improving on support/reflection. I've been supported in many ways in my career. Would like to see more growth
A6 I try to always build in some celebrations, reflections, and action planning in our leadership meetings.
here is an example of Ss tracking learning targets in freshmen science class. Huge focus for us this yr. https://t.co/kys2UVmXSI
Google form is great - always keep us on our toes and creates effective feedback...
Shared ldship is where it's at! Takes a special leader to start the shift. Turned on and tuned in.
Those around us will never move as fast as we want them to...
We are walking the path of demonstrations of learning and portfolio presentations
A6 This has been a big goal for me since last year. It's imperative to fostering growth mindset and student independence.
could b as simple as charting math facts, reading stamina, HW or as complex as rubric self-assessment.
A6: We have shifted faculty meetings to faculty work sessions, building capacity and hearing all voices.
A6: Looking to poach some ideas here posse. Reflection critical & need new ideas. Still love paper & pen but more to the game!
A6 Supportive, but not always reflective - it's hard to see beyond ourselves or back at ourselves! Gotta think on that one
Thanks for sharing that. It's good to see different examples.
I made reflection for student more intentional in class which in turn has made me more reflective.
A6: Share successes & encourage sharing of ideas.
Student tracking/reporting would make a great topic. I'd like as much help as I can get :)
A6 Reflection can be dangerous. Be prepared to listen, process, and succeed. Trust is the foundation to success.
Growth designed for the student caused growth for the adult...I need a yoda quote for this one. https://t.co/RPNQHU8OEw
I made reflection for student more intentional in class which in turn has made me more reflective.
A6 I want to see more reflection and support professionally, but that is a WIP. In the meantime, I create the change I wish to see
A6) Systemic change is never easy and at times support waivers
Q7 TAKE ACTION: What is 1 action you will take this week to equip others to be leaders?
Have to go . Thank you for the learning. Have a great week everyone!
A6: We will get there bc an appetite for reflection is developing.
A6. To inspire is just the beginning -To Empower is life Giving !
Checking out early. Thanks Have a great week!
RT
Q7 TAKE ACTION: What is 1 action you will take this week to equip others to be leaders?
A7 Celebrate successes, especially those accomplished through initiative and growth mindset!
A7: Listen to them - give them room to lead. When they take action, support them.
A6) last year we changed to department PLCs rather than grade levels. Looking at Pre-K -12 curriculum is the whole picture.
A7 This week I am going to attempt to do a personal check-in with each leader on my team.
A7: Create a structure for Ts to engage in peer evals, with feedback focused on Learning Targets. https://t.co/BclCAg7ZPA
Q7 TAKE ACTION: What is 1 action you will take this week to equip others to be leaders?
A7: Planning empathy walks across all my schools to hear what is working and where the pain points are.
Indeed. This is why it is so important to have a strong support group to keep us moving forward (mentally & physically)
A7: Work with grade level team leaders on challenging group dynamics. Coach a teacher. Model strategies for a teacher.
Empathy Walks
WOW

A7: Planning empathy walks across all my schools to hear what is working and where the pain points are.
A7 Encourage and support more staff to lead mini-sessions at our upcoming PD. Peer to peer learning is powerful!
