Growing: I've got one group that is behaviorally challenging.... I'm growing my repertoire of "tricks" to get them involved, and interested in writing. It's a large group, each day I try to tweak my approach slightly. Relationship is there, but still not enough. #sunchat
First of all, this year is going so fast!!! Iām really enjoying my Government class this year and next week we are going to start talking media impact on elections! Iām pumped!! #sunchat
Morning, #sunchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. I'm glowing about success experienced yesterday by HS Ultimate Frisbee players I help coach. I'm growing by re-framing assessments with MS'ers as standards-based growth challenges. #sunchat
My glows for the year so far: being willing to do the little things (like assisting with lunch duty, hall duty, or chaperoning events) in hopes of building relationships to encourage a culture of feedback, so my work as the instructional coach may be more productive #sunchat
Growing: learning to manage all this things happening this year. Iāve been gone a lot with meetings and I feel like my relationships have struggled a little by not being there #sunchat
My glow & grow are the same. In our move to S self-assessment I'm happy to see our Ts making so many incredible changes... but there's still a long way to go! #sunchat
My "Glowing": Each S. had to write 750+ word story on their chromebook. Each week we tackle one aspect of it: dialogue, paragraphing, the opening, etc. We edit and revise. The results have been tremendous. With the right tools, these kids are unstoppable. Progress! #sunchat
Q1 (Glowing): I'm really serving and helping others in meaningful ways. I've taken on more leadership responsibilities and commitments to help others within the building. I've also made myself readily available to students outside of classroom hours. #sunchat
I had an hour that almost killed me last year. We finally started to have some good days but they stayed a challenge. Please share some of the tricks you are using. #sunchat
Growing- Iāve joined our PBIS & MTSS committees. I want to make sure weāre meeting our Tier 1 studentsā needs & not forgetting about them with so much added focus on Tiers 2 & 3. #sunchat
Growing - getting better at narrowing my focus - what do I want to accomplish? what can I accomplish? In terms of time and importance, these aren't always the same things. #sunchat
My Concern: Seems like a huge amount of paperwork and administrative work this year. Taking up more time than I have to give, and making me feel anxious and stressed. Wondering if there is a way to curb it, or am I just not organized. Lessons take a backseat. :( #sunchat
My glow and grow are one in the sameākeeping my focus on my values. If you arenāt careful, your focus can quickly become about everything else that just doesnāt matter. #sunchat
Iām trying to connect more with people in the community and encourage them to bring their skills into our schools. My concern is with students who arenāt motivated and Iām taking advantage of opportunities to understand. #sunchat
Conclusion I've almost reached: There's always a long way to go & that's okay -- provided that we know where we're going & it feels like we're getting closer. Turns out many goals that matter are asymptotes. #sunchat

I have so many areas I need to grow in. Pple say I am too critical. My focus for this year is helping students to reflect and them collaborating effectively to learn. #sunchat
Growing- Pushing myself out of my comfort zone by sharing my professional work and thoughts with people out of my group of critical friends. Learning to make time for myself- personally and professional growth. #sunchat
@MissWinegar Honestly, it's difficult and I'm not sure I am doing a great job of balancing. Time is a precious commodity in education, and little is provided within the day. I've just had to sacrifice more of myself this year, which is difficult but rewarding #sunchat
I am always concerned about the Ss who seem like I am not helping enough. I am also concerned that education will never stop being under attack #sunchat
When new things are added, it's important that some things get dropped or we can't survive. What if you experiment by just not doing some paperwork and seeing if anyone notices. #sunchat

Concern: Ts and Ss do not use the accessibility tools that are built into #edtech. Overlooking these options limit how Ss show what they know and can do. How can more Ts work with tools at hand so Ss better access and express information? #sunchat
My GLOWS this year is how my new staff welcomed me before day one, their openness to take risks, & that they believe in my as their leader. The growth from the ENTIRE staff has been monumental. Iām growing in so many areas I donāt know where to start lol #sunchat#culture
I love seeing so many teachers are involving their communities as part of their students' learning! Do any of you work with faculty from your local universities in this endeavor? If so, how do they support you? #sunchat
Amen!!! Math is not just for math. I also feel like my professional development is similar to an exponential equation as well. I like the asymptote reference though. #sunchat
Q2 (Growing): I've been more reflective and purposeful with instruction. I've tried to refresh my lessons and activities. I'm really focusing on making instruction and student activities collaborative #sunchat
They can write whatever they'd like. We are using the story arc of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, denouement. They build their story (like a roller coaster), and we edit and revise as we go. Character traits, conflict, all a part of it. #sunchat
Growing- Pushing myself out of my comfort zone by sharing my professional work and thoughts with people out of my group of critical friends. Learning to make time for myself- personally and professional growth. #sunchat
This is so true. I think it is because tech PD doesnāt often show how to do it in a way that doesnāt seem overwhelming. We gotta share simple ways to integrate for it to be implemented well. #sunchat
Glowing- reaching out to my comunity( colleagues, parents, Ss) just because. Not waiting 4 bad news to share or just 2 ask 4 help. To share a positive experience in class, a friendly thanks note or a check in. These "little" things take little effort but reap great reward #sunchat
Yes, and on top of that, the buzz seems to be on focusing on self-wellness, which is difficult when it requires a lot of time out of school to do much of the work (+ plan and grade). Much more than fits into the daily prep times. Not griping, just trying to make it work. #sunchat
Q3 (Concerns); On a personal note, I just entered and Ed. Leadership program. Trying to balance teaching with classes, as well as my personal life and obligations has been very challenging. Self-care has been mentioned often today, that's a challenge for me at the moment #sunchat
Yeah I hear ya. I understand that some of that āpaper workā kind of stuff will never go away, but just trying to balance it all without losing my mind #sunchat
We have a great relationship with @MarywoodU. We currently have several of their students in our school a few days a week. Our teachers put them right into the mix working with students. Everyone wins- smaller groups, teachers get help, MU students gain experience. #sunchat
Geometric growth towards asymptotes? Strikes me as a recipe that could be exhilarating or could threaten burn-out. Any reflections in #sunchat crowd about how to tilt results sustainably towards former?
An immediate grow - form a student advisory council on engagement. If I am not soliciting data from those directly affected, how will I know we have been successful? Developing goals is great, but we also must contemplate how to assess them. #sunchat
I have had them as clients for my students as well as experts who provide feedback on their work in progress. I also improve my practice by discussing challenges I am having. Working with higher ed is so beneficial. #sunchat
For the US, I think it is more that they are just following orders from above and donāt think to ask if something else being implemented is no longer needed. #sunchat

Balancing everything- work, family, coursework I am engaged in. I love all of it. So I am not concened about it, doing the best I can, being present in engaged in all I am doing. Taking ALL of it in. #sunchat
Q3 (Concerns): I'm concerned about enrollment numbers in the classroom. I don't believe this issue gets enough attention. Each year it seems student to teacher ratio keeps growing. I believe we can solve most problems within our schools by simply minimizing class sizes #sunchat
I'll have to make a list one day of all the things and maybe sit down with them to prioritize. While all has a due date, there are some things undoubtedly more pressing than others. #sunchat@carlameyrink
I am living this life as well, and it is a struggle. I have found it helpful to find some people in your program and form a solid support group - people to coach you, cheer you on, and chide you when you don't take any time for yourself. #sunchat

Great point. Here is my initial thoughts: It is a hidden line for a reason. It is not there so that it motivates you to keep going. However, it eventually shows you that you never cross it so donāt wear yourself out. #sunchat
I agree. The idea that class size doesn't matter doesn't make any sense to me. The best teaching/learning happens in individual conferences. How can those happen when class sizes are so large? #sunchat
Which means more teachers, which means more budget, which means more taxes which no one wants to mention at Board meetings when public is present. "Make Do" is a better campaign slogan, unfortunately. #sunchat@philllbmartin00

I think when we allow Ts to move forward at their own rate, they generally stay motivated. If we push them to go faster than they're able, they often burn out. Everyone learns differently & we have to be careful to respect that (something I tend to forget) #sunchat
That is interesting. I am not a stand and deliver T. I guess I should have said it is more about my ELL (over 30 languages in my building) and SPED Ss. I donāt feel like i am helping them use the right tools for them. #sunchat
Oh Iām sure it is. And itās one of those things no one tells you while youāre in school. College prep programs need more real life info so there is less shock when it happens...if thatās possible #sunchat
I have had them as clients for my students as well as experts who provide feedback on their work in progress. I also improve my practice by discussing challenges I am having. Working with higher ed is so beneficial. #sunchat
Well, we do have to teach them to be self-sufficient, so I guess that is what the teacher was doing? It's a lesson in itself to seek out the answers (and confirm they are legit!) #sunchat
Wise, respectful point, Carla. (I also see value for learners of all ages in working at edges of our comfort zones, perhaps a rate that's a tick faster than we might choose for ourselves...) #sunchat

I think any school that has a university near can make it happen. They really do want relationships with K-12. Just got to send out an email and see. #sunchat

Thanks for a great chat, everyone! It's blustery and cold here today, a good day to make some lasagna. Need to head to the store to get supplies! #sunchat See you next week! Keep Glowing and Growing!
Hopefully that was the mindset. I do think it's important to teach our Ss to find answers for themselves. Eventually they have to become independent learners. #sunchat
Gotta jump off a little early. This was a great chat. Have a great week everyone. Check out my blog: https://t.co/9cruXMBVRb. Going to post a lot of info over the next week. #sunchat
