Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
Hi there. Joining from St Paul Mn. Solutions Consultant with Edmentum. Checking in while cleaning up after all the little cousins crashed our place for dinner & bouncing on the trampoline! Gotta love summer. #IAedchat
Hello, #iaedchat. It's been a while, but I'm going to try and give this a go for a bit tonight. Devin Schoening in Council Bluffs, IA. Great to see everyone.
A1:
--creating opportunities for people to strive
--increasing opportunities for each and every person in our school to engage in powerful professional learning.
--creating conditions where everyone's voice is heard and valued.
#IAedChat
A1: Building on strengths, passions of each other so that we can grow collectively and learn from each other! We all have the ability to grow one another. Students & staff. #iaedchat
"grow collectively"--I left that out of my impromptu definition, but it's so important!
We're stronger collectively than we are, if each of us is hoeing our own row.
#IAedChat
A1: culture of learning and growth is what comes first to mind. Building capacity speaks to me about individuals striving to improve themselves for the benefit of the community. #iaedchat
A1: Providing opportunities for folks to utilize and share their talents/skills/knowledge/passions in a way that enhances opportunities for everyone in an organization regardless of positional power. #iaedchat
A1: Seeing leadership in others even if they are not able to see it within themselves. From there placing people in a position where their strengths and talents can be maximized. #iaedchat
Q2: At #saiconf18, John Coyle spoke of the importance of focusing on strengths for optimal performance. What are your key strengths and why do you feel as you do? #IAedChat
I agree that we have to create the conditions! Believing that we are all capable of more alone will not grow capacity! We need to create the culture, and release control! #iaedchat
A1: It's also about helping people realize their potential. "Organizations put tremendous effort into finding great people but then restrict their ability to have an impact on any but their own tasks." - Work Rules. #iaedchat
A1 (off script). We must build relationships with and between all stakeholders so that we can spotlight and learn from the diverse talents in our communities. #iaedchat
A2: A little off topic, but this is exactly what I wish we would do more of with students: focus on strengths and not deficiencies. We have students who are great at math, but struggle reading...so we focus on reading. I think that's backwards. #iaedchat
A2:
--organization
--effective communication
--listening
--seeing connections and relationships, and finding ways to strengthen them
--big picture view of our building
The feedback I get from colleagues says these are my strengths.
#iaedchat

A2: The Clifton Strengths Finder has been very important to @KLAMagnet and our belief in shared leadership. Looking at the strengths collectively (top 5 together) has provided valuable insights to ourselves and each other! @D_m_Brandon@AnnBuckley19#iaedchat
A2: I like to research and read about educational topics. If I feel strongly that it is better for kids than what we are doing, I jump in and share with others to bring them on board. #iaedchat
Q2: At #saiconf18, John Coyle spoke of the importance of focusing on strengths for optimal performance. What are your key strengths and why do you feel as you do? #IAedChat
A2: That’s a tough one. I’m comfortable with the idea that I’m woefully ignorant in so many areas, but I think a strength is that I am hungry to learn my way out of that ignorance. #iaedchat
Q3: @Joe_Sanfelippo shared an inspiring message with the #saiconf18 crowd about the importance of changing the narrative of your school story. Brag about your school for a minute- who or what is amazing at your school and needs to be celebrated? #IAedChat
A2: Top 5 from @StrengthsFinder:
1). Learner
2). Relator
3). Significance
4). Self-Assurance
5). Futuristic
What does this mean? Motivated to learn new things. I enjoy close relationships with others. Want to feel significant. I'm confident. Always looking to future. #iaedchat
The learning communities @KLAMagnet and @CRMcKinleyMS are fired up to develop meaningful relationships and continuously grow to impact kids! We rally behind a common vision and are willing to look at ourselves to create meaningful change! #iaedchat@CRSCHOOLS

A3 A younger T I respect a lot is @YadgirGMS He puts his Ss in position to succeed, he knows the right button to push to get kids moving in a positive direction
#IAedchat
Are you kidding me, another @Joe_Sanfelippo quote? Come on, we're better than that. ;) But seriously, I think we in #cbcsd have so many passionate educators. It's infectious when you have the opportunity to work with those people. #iaedchat

A3: I am blessed to work with faculty, staff, and administrators who care very deeply for our students, and who are dedicated to helping each and every child be successful. I am also blessed to work with amazing students. They're all inspiring. #iaedchat
Q3: @Joe_Sanfelippo shared an inspiring message with the #saiconf18 crowd about the importance of changing the narrative of your school story. Brag about your school for a minute- who or what is amazing at your school and needs to be celebrated? #IAedChat
A3: Our school focuses on human connections first. The academics come second. We realize that every child is one caring adult away from changing their life. #iaedchat
A3 Ts collaborate and share their ideas and opinions and are willing to try anything once. @asnapp04 is our CA teacher and as a veteran went to alternative seating last year and is expanding it. @JuliaGillilan and @MsNikkel are changing their approach in our MA dept. #iaedchat
I love seeing that you have your strengths and know them. I bet that has made you a better leader. I know it sure has helped me and the more I dig into them the more I learn about myself as a leader. If you dont have the theme cards I highly suggest you get them off the website
A3. We embrace all students at KLA representing 20+ countries and languages and we have high expectations for all students and staff to continually improve to reach our goals and we are committed to this and most important we have evidence to back up who we say we are #iaedchat
A3. I am so lucky to have worked with and continue to work with so many great teachers across the district who give so much to the students. They are an inspiration to me. They keep me wanting to learn more and make coming to work each day so worth it! #iaedchat
A3:
Many Ts collaborate extensively, between disciplines and between S skill levels.
Many Ts consistently strive to solve a problem of practice, which lead to station rotation, flipping, socratic seminars, collaborative student testing groups....

A3: We celebrate growth - no matter the starting or ending point. We try to analyze data without blame. Teachers shed tears over kids. Staff love one another - and they forgive after they take a break from loving. #iaedchat
A4: I am forever working on being a better listener. I have to fight the urge to listen to respond, instead of listening to understand. I also want to do better at letting students find their own solutions, instead of jumping in too soon. #iaedchat
A4 The skill of Being Intentional From my classroom pedagogy, to student voice & choice, to parent communication I need to have more intent & less opportunity lost
#IAedchat
A4. I am hoping to improve on connecting student learning to the "real world". Creating opportunities for students to apply content to a setting outside the walls of the school. #iaedchat
A4: I am always trying to improve my listening skills, also asking better questions. Focus is something that I am always trying to sharpen as well. #iaedchat
A4. Slowing down and really listening to everyone to make them feel heard and valued even if isnt a "big rock" in my mind at that time. I also will strive to be transparent with the feedback I hear and my action streps to act upon it or not act upon it #iaedchat
A4: Adding in more co-creating, co-planning to help build capacity instead of relying so heavily on modeling. We have the skills and mindset to move forward and continue growing! #iaedchat
A4:
--listening.
--making my thinking transparent to others.
--keeping my ego in check.
--having meaningful one-on-one conversations about learning every single day.
--seeing and appreciating the efforts of others.
--strengthening weak relationships.
#IAedChat

I hear you but also wonder is there such a thing or instead is it making sure you are working within your personal mission statement and purpose?#iaedchat
A5 I work to greet everyone, have fun by playing music and telling jokes. I have a hat collection that allows me to change into different characters to keep it light #iaedchat
A5: We have the amazing ability to choose our actions, attitude, and mood each and every day. Each day I choose to bring my best. I try to be positive for myself and others, knowing how important each and every interaction is! #IAedChat
A5. I have to go out and talk to people. Find out about their day, what they are happy about. Plus what other people are saying...find something to laugh about. I believe laughter is so important to our health. #iaedchat
A5:
--Peeps in our building rotate so we always have food during PD.
--I smile. Energy is contagious--I want to spread something good.
--Our PD Team creates opps for colleagues to write to others about what they value in them.
--We feast at our Thanksgiving PD!
#IAedChat
If I do a better job balancing home & school, then all the moving parts of my life run smoother, w/o balance a mission statement is just a set of words that you are chasing #MyOpinion#iaedchat
Q6: One area of capacity building that often arises relates to parent/family engagement. What successful family/parent engagement strategies have you used? #IAedchat
A6: We had a 7 Habits Family Learning Series this year to help families learn more about the 7 Habits and be able to apply them and talk with their kids about what they are learning. It was awesome and we will do it again this year. #IAedChat
A6: Not sure about the strategies per se, but I think it's incumbent upon us to inspire our families to want to be part of our school community. It's easy to have family nights, and to create opps for families to come to our schools, but what about true engagement? #iaedchat
A6: I love having a conference the day before school starts-only positives to say. I use @ClassDojo to communicate daily with parents. I invite parents in to help with celebration days and other events. #iaedchat
A6: When we can provide families with a voice and feel that they are truly part of the school, we are going to be in pretty good shape. It is critical to know the culture of your community and how best to connect with the families you serve. #iaedchat
A6:
I post pics and videos of students in action to our HS facebook page.
I encourage parents to sign up for the LMS, to peek inside their kiddos' classrooms.
Still, we are searching for ways to create open, positive, two-way communication with each and every parent.
#IAedChat
Q6: One area of capacity building that often arises relates to parent/family engagement. What successful family/parent engagement strategies have you used? #IAedchat
A7: In a word: Intentional.
Intentional in co-planning, intentional focus, and intentional in relationships. To grow capacity, we need to remember: relationships, relationships, relationships! #iaedchat
A7:
I want to have more one-on-one convos with colleagues, so I understand their challenges.
I want to help create the protocols and structures during the school day for Ts to solve problems of practice, collaborate, and engage in powerful conversations about learning.
#IAedChat
A7: Find the silent people who are ready to lead and have conversations about their drives, motivations, and hopes. Leaders are not always the boisterous ones. #iaedchat
A7. For me in a new position, I need to build relationships, listen to what people are saying, and continue to stay positive and continue to learn. #iaedchat
I would love to hear how this goes for you. I facilitated a quarterly individual conversation with all staff members (50) last year. Amazing insights. #iaedchat
