We all know and appreciate that young children LOVE to collect ‘things’, transport ‘things’ from A to B, count ‘things’, balance ‘things’, use ‘things’ and pile ‘things’ up in imaginative play… For ideas on Loose Parts visit... https://t.co/bYFuPUFUaw#UKEdChat#ManchesterHour
#UKEdChat A1: Outdoor Classroom Day. A variety of activities including GeoCaching, Maths QR Code Orienteering, lunchtime Reading Club and completing DT projects in the sun.
A1 I took Y7 out with some water rockets for Science club a few weeks ago and I'm planning to do loads of sampling the next few weeks as long as the weather holds #ukedchat
A1 #ukedchat Last time was Tues and Wed. Tues: drop the egg challenge where they had to create something that would protect an egg from a high fall. On Wed based on that they had to bring their own materials to design and make a parachute that wld keep egg safe #stem
A1: Most creative example of outdoor learning I've seen in a while- Pupils working on Drama pieces utilising outdoor environment as their staging with cross curricular Music links- pupils demonstrating creativity in approach & challenged to do so was really refreshing #ukedchat
A1. Yesterday... we went to the beach! Lots of fun, but also lots of learning based around social skills, team work, inclusion and relationships! #UKEdChat
So, today I have no role at @LaxeySchool. One of my pupils takes the reins as “Headteacher for the Day” having won this as a prize at our Fair. Apparently it’s non-uniform, there’s an outing to the beach and all pupils will receive an ice-cream! Now why didn’t I think of that!?
#UKEdChat A1 Took learning outside frequently when a primary class teacher. Used role play and drama a lot in foundation subjects; outside they could have the space to work in groups without encroaching on others and easier to video in own spaces
A1: Taking pupils outside is one of the daily pleasures I have teaching different subjects- really refreshing to see pupils outside of classroom contexts #ukedchat
A2 #UKEdChat As a primary school teacher I get many opportunities to take the chd out for learning as I teach a variety of subjects. I do feel that I should do more of it though. Teacher goals for next year!
A1. The week before the half term. Collecting ideas for descriptive writing. Makes it easier for students if you have tangible things to help with the creative process - especially when a student’s additional needs makes this process tricky #ukedchat
A2. Living in the Isle of Man, we can’t fail to get outside! One of my schools is in the beautiful Manx countryside, the other has the beach on its doorstep 🇮🇲 #UKEdChat
#UKedchat every day! Today we were making islands and then exploded the volcanoes we made last week. I particularly love to take my children outside for phonics #A1
#UKEdChat A2 Brilliant for descriptive writing in English when trying to get pupils to use more senses than just what can be seen. Sparks more ideas than sitting in the classroom because they are often playing outside and not noticing details.
A2. For English it’s things like creative writing drawing inspiration from outside or things like practising dramatic performances of text. Once used the wooded area in school when reading A Midsummer Night’s Dream #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A2: Teaching in Year Six at a school with outstanding outdoor facilities means that there are plenty of opportunities to take T&L outside. We have a woodland area perfect for Forest School, an outdoor African Hut for lesson time and group work, & multiple play areas.
#UKEdChat Computing. Yr 1 - Using QR codes (we have QR codes linked to the varieties of trees at our school, the chn can scan the code and find out about the tree), taking bee bots/ pro bots outside, iPads to record our outdoor learning. Data logging etc. #A2
A1: years ago now. Worked in a private school and so not bound too much by paperwork. I'm one of the few FE lecturers who still do trips for English and Politics. Many are afraid of the forms and risk assessments now. #ukedchat
A2: Lots of opp. for PE staff to get out & engage with outside learning-more inventive ways to engage with the outside environment or learn in different ways have been looked at within schools we work with- Climbing, Orienteering, Cycling & Biking to name but a few #ukedchat
A3. The same expectations as bring inside with the added consideration of ensuring that students are not disturbing other classes. Think when you bring in different expectations it feels ‘different’ to the students and then the consistency in behaviour deteriorates #ukedchat
A school I once worked in used the library as a place for detention. So the message 'go to the library' was synonymous with being in trouble. The library was where you went when you were to be punished.
#fail#PrimarySchoolBookClub#primaryrocks#ukedchat
#UKEdChat we use the outdoor classroom a lot so chn have a very good understanding and respect for the environment from EYFS. Behaviour rarely changes & chn understand the difference between play time and outdoor learning. I think it’s all to do with the school ethos. #A3
#UKEdChat A3: If independent or small group work then children have a set time to complete at an agreed point. Success criterias to meet & prove productive use of time. Encouraged to show use of the outdoors through their choice of media. Expectations are high & fully established
#UKEdChat Computing. Yr 1 - Using QR codes (we have QR codes linked to the varieties of trees at our school, the chn can scan the code and find out about the tree), taking bee bots/ pro bots outside, iPads to record our outdoor learning. Data logging etc. #A2
A3: I've never really needed to. By allowing these seeming freedoms, students' are naturally better behaved, more engaged for fear of never getting the opportunity again. #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A3 Timings given to groups - one person in group as timekeeper. Respond quickly to my signal for pause - usually a raised hand that they copy. Focus on task so can feedback to larger group on completion.
A3: More a practical approach- pupils need to be aware of the expectations & norms of an outside working environment- space expectations, any safety considerations, if off site or in public- social expectations of shared spaces. About building expectations & experiences #UkEdchat
In our village and surrounding town there are QR codes for history points. I have set the challenge for esol students to follow the heritage trail and find out more about local history #ukedchat
A4: Always go with a whistle, Glasses and Clipboard. Gaining attention, protecting the eyes and narrating the positive for reinforcement later! #ukedchat
#UKEdChat a8 - my first observation... all resources blew away, a girl got stung by a wasp and had allergic reaction, two boys wrestled. I didn’t know what to do. Was a while before I ventured out again!
A4. I think it is the human resource ie. a teacher or an SLT with the right mindset. A can do attitude and a willingness to work through “barriers” (such as weather, risk assessments etc) #UKEdChat
A4. Depending on the task physical resources can be quite minimal. When we go outside for creative writing we just take flipchart paper and pens and keep it simple #ukedchat
A2 #UKEdChat Science has tons of opportunities for this, other than modelling of abstract concepts:
Bio:ecology, population and density estimates, collecting samples etc.
Chem:collecting samples for lab testing e.g.soil pH,rock samples
Phy:making rockets,motion graphs,sound etc.
#UKEdChat our school has just set up a ‘field study centre’ which the chn can access at lunch/ when outside. It has measuring equipment, clipboards, stationery, classifying resources, fossils, building equipment etc. #A4
#UKEdChat with my year 1 class we have clipboards, chalk, pencils, paper, our iPads by the door to our outside area. We have tables/chairs outside to do writing on too. Sometimes we don’t need anything, just ourselves! #A4
A3 #UKEdChat Other than the expectations of good behaviour others have mentioned, I tend to give them a physical boundary to stay within and give death stares to anyone who ventures close to the limits
#ukedchat A1 every Monday and Friday, groups visit the allotment which is tied into our science (living things), pshe (healthy me) and maths (height/ growth charts etc.). We also took them out last week to reenact the Greek Olympics!
#ukedchat A2 SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES!!! poetry-senses, imagination-fairy trees, drama, word games... literacy ideas from @CreativeSTAR are always amazing ✨
#UKEdChat A2 Maths: human venn diagrams / two way tables, collecting measurement data in athletics lessons, drawing chalk images of given shapes and drawing in any lines of symmetry, maths trails, finding a number that you have something in common with - so many!
A2 Maths is the subject I lead & there are plenty of opportunities.A couple of us had training from an outdoor learning person last week. Lots of ideas shared collecting leaves, measuring length ordering them. Picking up 2 slices of wood with numbers on + - X or / them. #UKEdChat
A1 Every Friday my class do an active starter for the day. It involves skipping, catching & throwing skills, parachute games, hula hooping (the children are trying to teach me how to do this better)... #UKEdChat
#ukedchat Q4 nature can be used as resources and dialogic teaching saves on carrying a load of resources around. Sticks, stones, smells, sounds... possibilities are endless! You just need the space & adults.
A4 The lady who did our training said she uses lots of things for free - leaves, a branch chopped into discs with numbers or letters on them, bits of coloured string (for a science investigation where string = worms)... #UKEdChat
A3 I have the same expectations as I would indoors: respect for the environment, for others (who maybe in nearby classes) and most of all for each other. I highlight any health and safety things I need to make chn and other adults aware of. #UKEdChat
#ukedchat Q4. Resources can be so simple... something that will hook, engage and ignite talk and discussion are my favourite kind of resources for outdoor learning
