"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

So very happy you joined us, Monica! won't let you down 😉
Hey Cassie welcome, and glad to see you again
Question 1 happening in 2 mins!!!
A1: For me I seek to ensure all my Ss have access to what we’re using, if they don’t we try something different
Hello! Michelle, back again, 4th grade, OR, follow !
Hi Michelle, welcome back, Alex just sent out Q1 jump in
Hello ! First-timer here. Cherise from CA. Teacher Educator and literacy researcher. Former HS English Tchr
Welcome! So glad you could join us!
A1: All students have wifi at home! so many of mine don't, & I want them to always have access to the internet
A1: Equity is defined in many ways. Plz clarify!
A1 my Equity vision- for Ss to access the content & for what they're bringing to the space to be honored
A1:equity is multitiered: access, S knowledge, T competency, infrastructure... My vision is to leave no stone left unturned
there is no reason they shouldn’t that’s an aspect of the campaign,
lol. A la "Are u afraid of the dark?"
A1: making sure that I advocate for all of my Ss, and to do whatever I can to meet their needs and increase success
speaking some here, Ss living in the Yet, honoring the process not the product
A little late to the party. Not sure if I can hang but I'm going to force my eyes open! Jerrica, third grade teacher, FL.
A1- Even though my Ss school 100% online, not all can make class due to no home internet. So, provided wifi would be great!
i hope so! i want them to be able to research/investigate their own passions on their own time...wifi matters!
First time here! Cindy from Mcallen TX 9th grade biology!
A1 Equity dream-Ss have access to necessary resources in their chosen environment.
Welcome Cindy! We’re glad to have you
A1 my vision is for internet to work consistently in every classroom not just upper grades.
Great way to put it, no matter what the medium all Ss need access to the supplies
yep. another aspect of Q1. Closing gaps to S access to broadband is important
A1. Providing students with what they need when possible, allowing them options, advocating for them
A1: Students experience a variety of technology each day
Hey Katie, great to see you again,
A2: Is there free or cheap tech I can use to get my kids wifi at home, let me know and I will try it! ha!
For every st to learn from where they are and discover new interests. For all to become life long learners.
A2: on paper assignments for kids that don't have wifi at home so they don't miss out or try to sched after school time
A1. Giving students opportunities to explore and learn through tech. Advocating for their rights and needs in the classroom
A2- I make all my lessons & activities available via recording and PPT so they can be viewed later https://t.co/vJMPBO8TAh
A2: Thankfully I wrote grants and am 1:1. Sad when Ts use tech as extra time fillers or reward. All Ss deserve access!
A2 find out what literacies (broadly defined) Ss already possess. Survey online to tap into their interests
A2Connecting Ss w experts that surpass my knowledge via assures that theyre receiving THE BEST information available
👋🏽 Still recovering from a bad cold so my timing is completely off. Tonight's topic👍🏼. I've been looking forward to this.
Choice of projects and tool to demonstrate what they learned.
A2: I think tech by it’s nature tends to not be cheap, innovation becomes the new way. Creating opportunities listing to S
A2: iPads are my go to right now, but open to any new tech that drives student achievement forward!
A2 weather I'm using an app, website , iPads etc. I'm incorporate tech everyday.
Hopping in later than I wanted, ! Dan from FL. Media specialist, a/v tech teacher, ELA teacher.
A1-A2: Equity looks like Ss access to tech/class info is ubiquitous for all. Experimented early in w GDrive and eBackpack
A2. Experimenting a lot this year with ways to incorporate tech and make it more accessible to Ss in the classroom
Check out ! It's easy to use and makes your video content interactive for Ss!
great to see you, Shirley!
Q3 is coming round the mountain...
we use this for all our Ss morning show videos!
Will have to check this out. Thx!
A2: SpellingCity w/my 1stGr ELLs was a huge success. I helped my School purchase+implement it in all the other ClassRMs.
A2- Would love for district to put wifi on buses and park in neighborhoods over night. Idea from another district.
I use my smartboard, ipads, laptops, and the lab desktops. If a chold struggles to write they will struggle to type.
agreed, just thought we should start a or
What do you mean by "test that technology"?
So with the wifi bus idea what's the typical range for the signal? Are kids having to hang out around them??
A3: My litmus test for tech is Ss usability, if it doesn’t work we’re not using it.
A3: I don't really test I let it play out real time! Be real w/ kids & say "welp this failed" & move on/have a back up plan
a1: equity for me is abt availability. I want my Ss to have equal chances to show their creativity and passions using tech
could place it in a park or outside an apartment complex and send WiFi recharge and go again
A2: The Ss English scores on Standardized testing🚀. My 1stGr learned 1yr of curriculum in 4mo. EdTech contributed.
A3:With FaceTime, , EbeamConnect, & Ss never miss a class. We've skyped so many sick & ISS kids in😄
Yes the power of "tinkering" https://t.co/68AC10owJc
A3: I don't really test I let it play out real time! Be real w/ kids & say "welp this failed" & move on/have a back up plan
A3: Open discussion of digital workflow with Ss. Make the tech PD part of class instruction. Kids need PD too!
A3.I gave my kids the tech and said show me what you can do. They did
a2: Google drawings and Google classroom have been game changers for my classroom. Kids love it as do I.
Completely agree, the idea of testing tech isn’t naturally conducive to the classroom for me https://t.co/pcecDBOcoN
A3: I don't really test I let it play out real time! Be real w/ kids & say "welp this failed" & move on/have a back up plan
A3:We try new apps to integrate science and social studies, as well as enhance math and ela. If it's too tricky we move on
This is my experience too. Always have a back up plan. It's OK for Ss to witness trial and error. https://t.co/IwtWUVU4LW
A3: I don't really test I let it play out real time! Be real w/ kids & say "welp this failed" & move on/have a back up plan
A3: I just do it! If it works keep moving forward, if not try something different. You can't be afraid to use tech.
this is important. Ss need to see technology used with failure mixed in. Doesn't replace instruction.
Off the cuff Q, how do we share our tech tinkering w Ts and Ss who don't have the same opportunities and/or know how?
plus there are times when Ss will figure out affordances & pathways while doing.
A3: if it doesn't work- try again with minor changes. Technological perseverance- the idea is good, execution needs adjust
y'all i call this the cowboy method...go for it, if it doesn't work, figure out the rest later YEEHAW
Ts get to move away from being "experts" and can be co-explorers of tools in some ways
A3: Sometimes Ss find a creative work around and that's empowering.
A3: That Process is something I would share in a PD or Consulting session. Preview: Consistency. https://t.co/LTlXWzwHM0
I like to get student feedback. Did you guys like using this? What worked? What didn't? Adapt from there
Off the Cuff A: I think sharing at meetings, offering to model, it starts with the Admin, providing safety to try and fail
A3: One of the awesome things about tech is your kids may know more than you and that's COOL! don't need to be the expert
LOVE IT! https://t.co/qmNUD19bP1
y'all i call this the cowboy method...go for it, if it doesn't work, figure out the rest later YEEHAW
A3: spontaneity adds to engagement. If kids see it too planned, they lose interest.
A3: I don't experiment on Kids. I'm fairly good at 🔮predicting success with 📲EdTech. I use it sparingly but use it WELL.
This requires a certain mindset I think. Learn through play in small doses. https://t.co/YpL1kIp1kR
Off the cuff Q, how do we share our tech tinkering w Ts and Ss who don't have the same opportunities and/or know how?
this also helps with showing that tech is on-the-fly workflow solution and not "because I have to use it"
A4: Immediately offer suggestions on how to bridge the inequity gap. Usually there are really simple + effective means.
A3: failure in a tech lesson is a life lesson- how do Ss see us React recover and rebuild? Teach perseverance in all areas
A4: Shine a light on it! What goes unmentioned can never be dealt with 😕 Too many passive observers in our midst...
Yes! It's about getting your hands in the action. Too much top-down structure can spoil it https://t.co/3KIpQK1NMJ
A3: spontaneity adds to engagement. If kids see it too planned, they lose interest.
A4: Learn, experiment, grant access, embrace hiccups and failure.
A4: Let people know...it shocks some people to know that not everyone in the world doesn't have wifi access 24/7
A4: It’s an unfortunate fact of life, but seek to share opportunities when they arise, , , there are ways
A4 Modeling is a great form of advocacy. Show what can be done w/what u got. Build partnerships, collaborate
A4: Peers are wonderful teachers and eager to guide. I just keep asking my less techie Ss to pair up to close the gap.
A4: As says make sure Ss have time to explore their passions at school bc may not have tech access at home
I would piggy back and do so over distances, connect classrooms outside your walls
A4: create opportunities for equity- in class, before & after school & during the day. Balance the scales
A:4 Try to provide opportunities to equalize. Brainstorm, negotiate, network w/peers, friends, PLN, give my time too.
A4: As far as Ts, ban the phrase "I'm not tech savvy" bc that's not acceptable anymore! Find a way you can be comfortable
A4:Digital inequity is starts in PreSchool!Ss entering Kindergarten w the ability to code while others can't say their ABCs
A4-Sit out at the Gates' house!! Reality, I just stay later after school for those wanting to work.
I 👀 the utility of Ss input+creativity+learning WITH older Ss. But I'm against experimenting using 📲 w/ElementaryEd.
yep - and it shocks some people that the Internet isn't magic or floating in the air
A4: Idea I’ve had but never moved forward with is displaying stickers at businesses showing Wifi partners with school
This. The digital landscape isn't some invisible narnia we can ignore. It's real! Ss need guidance. https://t.co/Ao01TfZYRT
A4:Digital inequity is starts in PreSchool!Ss entering Kindergarten w the ability to code while others can't say their ABCs
We have many COWs. Trying to get clearance for Ss to take chromebooks home. Even if it's only a few.
Collaborate!Too many Ts tend to keep their nuggets of tech wisdom to have an upper hand. Ss suffer, and so do relationships
A4: share successes & failures to show that we're all human & prone to mistakes- no matter how good/comfortable we seem.
I love this term. Computers On Wheels! https://t.co/z1aROuLcYW
We have many COWs. Trying to get clearance for Ss to take chromebooks home. Even if it's only a few.
A4. Be a voice, advocate, discuss.
iDon't think Ps SocioEcon status is everyone's Business. There's a fine line b/w equity + social propriety.
A5: because we can’t expect Ss to be prepared for the workforce they go into without the tools they will work with
I want a list of the business to pass out to students.
I rarely call a "failure" anymore. delays yes but kids help trouble shoot & teach me finish work while I figure it out.
A5: Justin from Bmore, 4th grade, dropping in for a question. Equal vs. Equitable is universal dilemma we will always face
A5: Tech is increasingly become an integral part of high-paying careers; we can't shut out certain kids from those careers
A5:As a public educator equity has/always will be a paramount issue. Although our arena's now digital, the fight's the same
A5: 21st Century skills are needed to be successful in the 21st century. We need to teach Ss how to evolve & grow & learn.
A:5 Digital & tech are the WAY of the future & who knows what else it holds. All students deserve a fair chance to succeed.
A5: Future ready skills demand that Ss have basic tech knowledge besides expertise in a field. They coexist!
A5 digital equity is a class issue & I'm not talking about school. need to get real about solutions https://t.co/McMKhGCxrh
A5: Simply providing a device to a Ss isn't enough. So many other factors. WiFi, tech experience, digital citizenship
A5 is but a marker of educ pulse --> Ss able to access content, codes of power & interpersonal skills
Hey glad you made it. Saw you were hosting something else.
A5 Digital equity/inequity correlates with quality of future life. Matthew Effect needs to end.
LOST TRACK OF TIME!
A5 Digital equity can mean the difference between success and underachievement.
Thank you all for your patience w me tonight as I just got home from 11 he road trip w 2 kiddos😜 https://t.co/vtiPN2RC8U
A5. Equality will always be an issue whether it's textbooks or tech. It's what we as Ts AND parents choose to do about it
True! Spoke w/ Intel engineer and they said I can't believe I've worked so hard 4 people to use tech frivolusly.
PREACH! https://t.co/FzoJnl1lKF
A5. Equality will always be an issue whether it's textbooks or tech. It's what we as Ts AND parents choose to do about it
thanks Shirley! goes edcamp style Weds! is my go to late night chat with
Be sure to connect with everyone involved in tonight's chat to build your PLN!!!
Thanks to the workhorse for making tonight's chat happen! And for giving me a tardy pass!
A5: Paramount?📲 ought to level the playing field. Not create wider gaps bw haves + havenots.
Thanks to for another great chat. It’s been a crazy week
so many people see iPads/iPhones as $500 Facebook machines.
A5: Paramount?📲 ought to level the playing field. Not create wider gaps bw haves + havenots.
A5: "be the change you wish to see in the world"-Gandhi We are creating tomorrow's leaders, embrace, empower, & embolden!
We will have a guest next week Coordinator of Title 1 will share how 2 improve parental involvement
A5: write grants, create or to balance the scales between the haves and have nots.
Follow each other peeps, grow that
It's unjust if Ts waste Ss learning time4️⃣Ts own learning time.
😬🍎- Shabana Jameel, M.Ed™
A5 Equity can open doors and tear down boundaries. We live in an info-based economy that will only continue to grow.
the people you chatted with, liked or admired. Grow your with people who will listen, advise and talk.
Was late, here's my $.02: Can't stand seeing Ss held back due to a lack of lrning tools. Need to figure out ways to help!
thanks for coming! Hope to see you next time!
Not only follow back, but recommend on Follow Fridays other you've met here tonight!!
Not sure what you mean. They ARE Social Tools. But as Ts we want Ss to ALSO 👀 's value 2️⃣learn.
This was much more interesting than expected. like a T un-conference. iMiss the SlumberParty feel though.😐
Thanks for making me think about my teaching and another insightful chat.
Thanks You've given me lots to think about.
