Q1 The first step in the https://t.co/MfLj2dIPw3 design process is empathize. Why is empathy the most important piece of the design thinking process? #sdedchat
A1: You have to understand the situation you are trying to fix. Once you have that then the design can happen. See it through someone else lens. #sdedchat
A2: An honest conversation with your user will help you develop empathy. Discuss who they are, what the needs are, what the perceived problem is, what is important to them. #sdedchat
Q3 One way to help empathize and define the problem is to ask an expert. What experts have you used in class before? What experts could you use in class? #sdedchat
A3: When my Ss were researching heat transfer/insulation and partnering w/ a class in Norway @KAarberg took his class to the zoo to ask the penguin expert. They subtitled their video & sent it to my Ss. #sdedchat
A4: They need a safe place to take risks. At South Middle School we have a place for making in our #makerspace This gives learners a space to ideate. #sdedchat
A4: When Ss are working on ideation I make sure to say that we want TONS of ideas. I don't shut down any of their ideas. Important to listen to convos among peers too, they should be supportive! #sdedchat

I also wonder how often adults get an opportunity to experience ideation to its fullest? I think modeling all kinds of ideas can help students feel safe too! If T is doing it, I can too! #sdedchat
A5: Yes and opens the door to other options. Yes but kills the conversation. I have started to use the words WHAT IF this year. Trying to open it up for deeper conversations. #sdedchat
A5: When working together it is important to acknowledge the work and ideas of other. You need to keep the convo moving without shutting anyone down or discouraging them. #sdedchat

My favorite part of the DT process is "how might we". Been in DT situations where challenges are considered very negative. Turn that frown upside down! :) #sdedchat
A3: I know that this is late, but I am doing this right now with Ss. They have to find experts to help with their science fair projects! That is where Twitter is key! Also, the community. Anyone have forms that they use to help facilitate this? #sdedchat

A6: I love craft supplies, have Ss reuse materials from home or packaging from school orders. When I don't have materials or don't want mess, Ss prototype on @tinkercad w/ 3D models. #sdedchat
A6: This is where collaboration with #makerspace and @mrstbauerly are key! Opens up so many more resources for prototyping with! However, sometimes nothing beats #legos and pipe cleaners #sdedchat
A6) Oh my, just about anything can do. Just need an imagination! I have seen great things out of recycled materials (cereal boxes, coffee tins, ect) But can also use toys, popsicle sticks, construction paper, glue and GLITTER. Cant forget the glitter! #sdedchat
A7: Ss could present to one or two other groups and have a few criteria for what to give feedback on. This would help Ss review their work so far, make improvements, and prepare for final presentations. #sdedchat
A7: Give learners an authentic mentor. Connect them with an expert to give feedback to them on their design. This takes learning to a new level. #sdedchat

A7: @Flipgrid has been a way that @DoloresGehner has used. I am interested in using it. I also, have them write blogs where they have college students, parents and high school students help them reflect! https://t.co/nSikogfKOg#sdedchat

A8: The key through all this is reflection. From the reflection they can go back and enhance it or use it as a jumping off point for something new. #sdedchat
A8: Our best ideas often come from mistakes or failures and working with others. Going through multiple iterations helps us reflect and improve our product and our learning. #sdedchat
I use a similar design process with my Ss for all major projects. I'd like to incorporate using empathy into this process & having students do practice presentations to get feedback. #sdedchat
I love using the design thinking process when I do @littleBits workshops. It is fun to see their ideas and designs come to life and being powered by the bits. #sdedchat
