Welcome to #NYEDChat! Tonight’s discussion is Growing Teacher Leaders Through Collaboration. I'm your guest moderator for tonight. Let’s rock Twitter with all of our thoughts tonight.
So Katie, I am excited that you spoke out on Twitter and asked to join #NYEDChat as a guest moderator. Growing teacher leaders is a quest that I have been interested in for year. #leadership#LeadershipDevelopment
A1- It is not so much that I allow my teacher leaders but rather encourage them to collaborate by building their PLN through social media, Ed camps, conferences, zoom sessions and more. I love learning with and from my team and PLN! #nyedchat
A1: I facilitate several bldg committees where are can collaborate with each other and share ideas. I also have given one of my Ts a role as an informal literacy coach for her colleagues. These have both resulted in some great progress in my school #NYEDChat
A1 I think that teacher leaders are important roles in any district structure Lisa. Fellow #PLN friends please join #NYEDChat to talk about how you grow leaders from within.
Hi everyone! A1:organized cohorts that allow for structured time to share best pracyuces, peer observe, give& receive feedback . Structured partnerships, #NYEDChat
A 1 Teacher leaders support the principal and colleagues. They can organize and sometimes lead professional learning, advocate for student-focused learning, organize genius hour, mentor new teachers. #NYEDChat
A1 A teacher leader is someone who doesn't need a title to lead. They are positive, they find solutions, and they don't complain. It's all about mindset. I'm fortunate to work with a lot of them! #NYEDchat
#nyedchat keeping and sharing professional journals is a great tool- helps teachers reflect on their practice and opensines of communication beyond the day to day.
A1 Teacher leaders should feel empowered and trusted to try out new ideas and lead the way in doing so. We began teacher-led SIP sub-teams this year and staff members have stepped up to take the lead- if they ask for support in anyway, it’s a yes...they do not hear no! #NYEDChat

Welcome MaryRose. We do a great deal with learning walks for this. This year we are organizing "Leading walks" where our T leaders will share time and observe other T leaders. #NYEDChat

A1: Effective leaders make a schedule that facilitates collaboration! It sends a clear message that we are supported and that collaboration is an expectation.
It's effective for us at CMS!
A1 I love surprising my staff w scheduling opportunities- using creative times of the day that allow for easy coverage, optimizing time to collaborate and problem solve. By freeing from responsibilities that others can do, time is a gift! #NYEDChat#NYEDChat
True Teacher Leaders
1 Don't try to be right; they try to be clear.
2 Try not to have the last word.
3 No longer try to show that it was their idea. They empower other people to own the idea.
#NYEDchat
Our Asst Sup for Curriculumhas created content area #PLCs which have been well-attended. This gives Ts voice and opportunity to share their classroom practices #NYEDChat

A1 We’ve done this through staff wide Edcamps on conference days. Since I’m a TOSA, I try to foster this by helping raise awareness to where opportunities for collaboration exist outside the school walls. Sometimes a leader is down the hall, sometimes down a few states! #nyedchat
#nyedchat teachers naturally have a desire to learn and grow. To be a great teacher you also have to be a great student- collaboration is born from this process and future teacher leaders will naturally rise to the expectation of collaboration if given support&feeedom to do so
A2 Encouraging teachers to lead sessions during collaborative time is a great way to grow T leaders- we are just starting to offer different session choices for our PLC meetings and teachers have expressed that want to lead them. #NYEDChat
A2: we’ve held full day PD where teacher leaders show best practices or areas of risk taking. It’s validating but also allows for valuable feedback #NYEDChat
A2: I still believe that Learning Walks can be one of the most powerful professional development opportunities that can benefit teacher leaders and others on all levels. #NYEDChat
A2: using the collaborative approach gives the teacher leaders a platform to lead. It is a time for them to share and support fellow colleagues #NYEDChat
A2: Build capacity in those that directly impact students and enable them to instruct and facilitate district-sponsored university style courses #NYEDCHAThttps://t.co/prNZ7d4siJ

A2: Teacher leaders step up when tapped by admin leaders.
Set some guidelines for meeting/collaborating. But, allow teacher input/ownership in the process.
This model is being successfully implemented this year in our district.
Trust! Empowerment!
A2: Hi all! Lauren, Instructional Coach! It is rewarding to attend meaningful PD with other educators in my district. We have a shared experience & then discuss ways to embed instructional practices into ‘Live’ curriculum. Also, turn-keying in gr. level/faculty meetings #NYEDChat
A3: Giving teachers opportunitiesto try new things without fear is empowering for them. Teachers have to feel and realize that failure IS an option...and it’s okay #NYEDChat
A1: All of our teachers assume the role of leader in some capacity. We call them our champions. We have PLC champions, PDC champions, Culture and Climate champions. The cooperative structure allows for balance and deepe understanding. #NYEDchat
A3- Have them attend conferences to hear the latest and greatest ideas from amazing presenters. Having honest conversations with them about what to expect. Have them shadow you for a day and model the "Think Aloud¨ approach #nyedchat
A3 Encourage teacher leaders to attend conferences, be part of core teams, and seek out their feedback- show them how valued they are and tap into their strengths #NYEDChat

Informal teacher leaders can build capacity and improve their craft through collaborative discussions, review of best practices, etc...Good teaching is good teaching, no matter the subject or content. #NYEDChat
Role modeling is important but it is not enough by itself. Everyone is a role model one way or another. Being more intentional in helping others grow is essential. #NYEDChat

REFLACTION (Reflection with Action): What is one thought or idea you will take from this chat and share with someone tomorrow OR what people or resources from tonight’s chat can you connect your teacher leaders with to grow as leaders? #NYEDChat
We can find unique ways for teacher leaders' voices to be magnified both informally and formally. Leaders need to loosen the reins so teacher leaders can come forward. #NYEDChat
Todd, that word "intentional' is crucial. We need to help our leaders (formal and informal) be transparent and reflect on their role and how to share their why. #nyedchat

A3: Every educator I have encountered has a ‘bag of tricks”-strategies that transform their practice. Encourage those Ts to share their passions and student achievement successes with their colleagues. It takes a village! We are all teacher leaders! #NYEDChat

A3: Stop spending your time forming opinions of those around you instead believe in them. We do not grow where we are informed. We grow where we are accepted. @bobgoff taught me this. #NYEDChat
Q2 Educators appreciate formal opportunities to meet with others in similar positions. Reflection, problem-resolution, and deeper coaching conservations require a time and place.. A systemic approach to meet and collaborate👍🏼#NYEDChat
A3: our district has done a great job treating PD days like professional conferences with great speakers and promoting honest conversations on today’s educational issues #NYEDChat
A2. Construct collaborative prof learning where Ts are planning, preparing and executing... aligned to SIP, research... focus groups, DI and vertical discussions #NYEDchat
As Instruc Coach/Rdg Spec, I'm in classrooms all day-from phy ed to global politics. We collaborate to create lessons that support all Ss & their unique abilities. I'm able to take best practice from social studies & tweak it for the visual arts. I go to work excited! #NYEDChat
A3 Teacher leaders are groomed from within. Collecting mentor texts titles and building classroom libraries are an important piece of literacy sharing. Many teachers are book nerds so this should come easily. #NYEDChat#booklove
This chat is on fire! Don't forget to follow the people in the chat tonight. We need to continue the conversation and I love connecting with other EDU's to bring opportunities to our Ts. #NYEDChat
If you are interested in sharing more and possibly collaborating on some PD and other opportunities please DM or tag me tonight and I will send you some more information. #NYEDChat
We have 2 min left-everyone should be reflacting/bringing their thoughts into classrms: What is 1 thought or idea you will take from this chat & share with someone tomorrow ? #NYEDChat
Thank you, Carol. I cringe when I hear all Ts are expected to be "reading" Ts. I am a certified reading specialist. I don't expect phy ed T to have my background (nor do I have his). But together, we can create lit lessons in phy ed that are real, relevant & relatable! #NYEdChat
Peg, when I was a districtwide director the PE teachers were a great bunch to work with. They found creative ways to foster literacy and were proud to share their thoughts. #NYEDChat

Reflaction is a way 2 step back/come up w creative ways to collaborate with teammates on how to impact teaching and learning. I encourage Ts 2 create words to live by posters for Ss. #NYEDChat
I will make a template for you and Evan to construct your questions, Laura. You have the flexibility of choosing which format you will use: half-hour or hour-long chat for #NYEDChat's convo.
