A7 Portfolio grading. IMHO, the way to assess Ss growth over time. I use grade conferences, Ss prove grade w/ portfolio work.

A7 - It's hard to grade "participation," especially in a standards-based model. You can require peer feedback somehow. . .

A3 Book talks are amazing. Teachers show kids what books they love. And have copies on hand. Goal: get kids to share.

A7 - I think sharing/publishing encourages quality, and being a kind of "gatekeeper" for "completion" helps, too.

A7b. Should add that I don't put a grade on anything; feedback only. Ss argue their own grade based on standards & their work.

Not objectively gradable, but I use reading conferences. I meet w/ students periodically to chat about their independent books

A7 - I think in a workshop, the teacher is encouraging the Ss to improve as a writer, not necessarily grading papers.

I rely on conference notes. They may fake a reading log, but they can't fake a conversation.

As part of free rdg I ask Ss to meet w a peer then w me after finishing rdg. Each S needs to lead 2 book talks during the yr.

A7 - I think we can ask the kid to explain process, and grade their explanation or use of examples, but "quality" is hard.

Conferring can help. Knowing my kiddos and knowing who needed more attention helped more.
