    In reply to @skeeTX, @TheLegitTeacher
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:08 PM EDT
Q1. What does a “workshop” model in language arts mean to you? Does it incorporate free writing, free reading, or both? #teachwriting
  • skeeTX Oct 3 @ 9:08 PM EDT

  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Hey everyone! Cristi from NC, I teach 8th grade ELA. Blog is https://t.co/CXyzC0rz0W #teachwriting
  • skeeTX Oct 3 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1: Ts incorporating mini lessons w/ Ss Reading, writing, collaborating, peer editing, reflecting & growing together #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1 - I think it's about kids working on different things simultaneously. Less stringent control over tasks, more choice. #teachwriting
  • Erin_MCteaching Oct 3 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1 To me, workshop means everyone is improving in their own way #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:11 PM EDT
    Welcome! #teachwriting
    In reply to @Mrs_J_of_EAMS
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1 My workshop is half reading and half writing (that's the dream anyway 😁) Mostly Ss choice directed. #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1. Workshop is the T giving control to the students. We give them choices every day on what they read and write, with the T adding mini-lessons and book talks as needed #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1 This year I'm working toward an "apprenticeship" model. Ss treat the authors of their fave books as mentors & guides. #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1 - I think workshop also focuses more on mastery than other models - kids work at their own pace, until they "get it." #teachwriting
  • TheLegitTeacher Oct 3 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: starts with mini-lesson, Lots of collaboration, modeling and feedback. Includes free writing and reading. #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A1 - I also like the feeling that you're making or building things in a workshop. The name alone feels more productive. #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:15 PM EDT
Q2. Have you tried a workshop model before? If so, what did a typical day or week look like in your class? If not, why not? #teachwriting
  • Erin_MCteaching Oct 3 @ 9:16 PM EDT
In my sped world, mastery is really far off. Ss would get bored of a topic before they hit mastery. We just focus on progress #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:16 PM EDT
    Why #workshop and #gradeless go hand in hand! #sblchat #tg2chat #teachwriting
    • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1 - I think workshop also focuses more on mastery than other models - kids work at their own pace, until they "get it." #teachwriting
  • Erin_MCteaching Oct 3 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2 I've been continually trying to incorporate more workshop w/ the right balance of structure my kids need #teachwriting
  • skeeTX Oct 3 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2: Ss chose novels to read and present book talks. Writing full of peer editing and conferencing w/ me #teachwriting
  • TheLegitTeacher Oct 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
    I agree. #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2 - Journal prompt to open, brief share, news/minilesson, write time, closing or share time. #teachwriting
  • dst6n01 Oct 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
    Hi y'all! I'm Miah, director of ELA/literacy for @AchieveInc #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Sometimes it means a few kids work in a small group with you, others are independent, too. #teachwriting
    In reply to @Erin_MCteaching
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
    Hi Miah! #teachwriting
    In reply to @dst6n01, @AchieveInc
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2 - Challenge in science/soc st is emphasis on content, not building/making things. Harder to "workshop" it. #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2 I started w/ reading workshop last year. This year I'm trying to give equal time to rdg & wrtg. #thestruggleisreal #teachwriting
  • Erin_MCteaching Oct 3 @ 9:19 PM EDT
I struggle w/ this. My kids struggle w/ working independently while I give specific attention to others. Need to work on this #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2 - I'm finding that a lot of "inquiry" or PBL structures mirror workshop components. Trying to make it work, starting soon. #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2. Not yet, but my vision is 1-2 days of rdg, 3-4 days of wrtg/week, Ss are writing, revising, conferencing w/ peers and T #teachwriting
  • TheLegitTeacher Oct 3 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Starts with a quick write, then a mini-lesson then write time. I write with students and also conference #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
It's hard. You need kids who can maintain focus while others are doing something else. #teachwriting
    In reply to @Erin_MCteaching
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2 Day 2 day means lots of independent work (reading & writing) or small groups, minilessons, and 1 to 1 conferences #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
This makes me happy. I think writing (and reading) with students is crucial for the workshop model to work #teachwriting
    In reply to @TheLegitTeacher
  • dst6n01 Oct 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2.Yes, &loved it! Ss were grouped in 3s-4s,@each Fr. we focused on a mini lesson, which they had to try on their drafts #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Sometimes making it a shorter duration helps. Or making part of writing time silent w/no talking at all. #teachwriting
    In reply to @Erin_MCteaching
  • TheLegitTeacher Oct 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: struggling to implement with new students this year. We haven’t mastered working independentlyYet #teachwriting
  • TheLegitTeacher Oct 3 @ 9:22 PM EDT
    Yes it is. #teachwriting
    In reply to @upahk
  • dst6n01 Oct 3 @ 9:22 PM EDT
They then had to spend 1 min setting workshop goals for the hour. Then, they workshopped, 1 person/wk. #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q3. In order to have a successful reading/writing workshop, what key components are needed? #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:23 PM EDT
I've said this before - best part of workshop is chance to work 1-1 with kids on their writing. Powerful stuff. #teachwriting
    In reply to @Mrs_J_of_EAMS
  • dst6n01 Oct 3 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A2. Totally transformed my writing instruction. BUT, I was only able to do it in honors. #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Absolutely! I know my kids so much better in the workshop model than I did when I was more traditional! #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Agree student-set goals are important. I like Ss to share their goal with the class as a check-in for accountability #teachwriting
    In reply to @dst6n01
  • TheLegitTeacher Oct 3 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3: Ss who can work independently, organization, accountability, peer feedback, teacher think alouds to model #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3. Student-set goals for rdg & wrtg, class expectations and guidelines, built in accountability for T to ensure participation #teachwriting
  • TheLegitTeacher Oct 3 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3: an expert group of Ss who can assist others while teacher is conferencing #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3 TIME. A well-stocked classroom library. Passionate Ts willing to be open w/ Ss about our reading/writing life. #teachwriting
    • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q3. In order to have a successful reading/writing workshop, what key components are needed? #teachwriting
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A1 It means incorporating student choice & working w/each student to help them reach standard(s) #teachwriting
    • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:08 PM EDT
Q1. What does a “workshop” model in language arts mean to you? Does it incorporate free writing, free reading, or both? #teachwriting
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A2 When workshop is stringent, student voice & choice are restricted. Start w/standard, give them space to meet it. #teachwriting
    • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:15 PM EDT
Q2. Have you tried a workshop model before? If so, what did a typical day or week look like in your class? If not, why not? #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3 - Time is the big thing. Kids need time to try, fail, re-start. Consistency is key, too. And patience. And resilience. #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:28 PM EDT
This was the 1st year we wrote and signed workshop contracts as a class. ❤ that now Ss remind each other of expectations! #teachwriting
    In reply to @upahk
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Tips/advice for getting books for the classroom library? #teachwriting
    In reply to @Mrs_J_of_EAMS
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3. What is standard to be mastered? Then, incorporate voice and choice. Conferring helps students meet standard #teachwriting
    • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q3. In order to have a successful reading/writing workshop, what key components are needed? #teachwriting
  • dst6n01 Oct 3 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A3. Models of good writing. Lots and lots and lots of models #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A3 - I think you have to be practical, too. If it isn't perfect, that doesn't mean it isn't worth doing. #teachwriting
  • skeeTX Oct 3 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A3: T needs right mindset to allow Ss the freedom to grow as readers and writers. Provide support & encouragement as needed #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:29 PM EDT
Peer accountability is usually more impactful than the teacher reminding them what to do! #teachwriting
    In reply to @Mrs_J_of_EAMS
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Including, and especially, student-written models, if you can get them. And teacher models. #teachwriting
    In reply to @dst6n01
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A well-stocked classroom library & school library. Plus fully endorsed teacher-librarian to support students & teachers #teachwriting
    In reply to @Mrs_J_of_EAMS
  • T_HEB Oct 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3 Essentials for reading/writing workshop are a playful, safe atmosphere, mentor texts, and modeling. #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Q4. What should be the role of the teacher in a workshop model? #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Thrift stores, used bookstores, library sales, donations. My Amazon cart stays full. Scholastic warehouse sales are great! #teachwriting
    In reply to @upahk
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Yes. This is where mini-lessons can be a teacher's best friend. #teachwriting
    In reply to @dst6n01
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4 - I think the best model for my sports-stuffed head is coach. I run a few drills, give some tips, but watch them play. #teachwriting
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Love it. Atmosphere, classroom culture can help students a great deal. #teachwriting
    In reply to @T_HEB
  • T_HEB Oct 3 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4 The T in a workshop model is the "meddler in the middle" pushing, nudging, questioning, celebrating & guiding. Messy maker. #teachwriting
  • ErinClancy33 Oct 3 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4: 1:1 or small group support, consults per request of student #teachwriting
    • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Q4. What should be the role of the teacher in a workshop model? #teachwriting
  • skeeTX Oct 3 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4: T should model, share exemplars and move aside to let Ss find their way. Check in along the way and provide support #teachwriting
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Akin to the guide on the side? #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:33 PM EDT
    Welcome, Tim! #teachwriting
    In reply to @T_HEB
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:34 PM EDT
True. It's not just Ms Frizzle who gets to be messy & make mistakes. #teachwriting
    In reply to @T_HEB
  • T_HEB Oct 3 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4 Ts in a workshop model also make themselves vulnerable by sharing their work with the learning community. #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Yes! I think my mental images for "coach" are a little more complete, though. Same thing, yes. #teachwriting
    In reply to @Perednia
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4. The teacher is, perhaps most importantly, a cheerleader and supporter for the Ss who "can't" write or "hate" reading #teachwriting
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:35 PM EDT
I think you're right about the "more complete" part. Being a coach is complex. #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A4 Ts are guides and helpers, not bosses. "How can I help?" Give options, not answers. #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Maybe "nice" coach, though. Not a mean coach. The one who wants everyone to play and do well. Not just win. #teachwriting
    In reply to @Perednia
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:36 PM EDT
Writing is a sport I'd actually be good at! Sign me up, coach! #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:36 PM EDT
Absolutely. I've seen a lot of mixed results in my limited sporting experience. #teachwriting
    In reply to @Perednia
  • skeeTX Oct 3 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A4b: Ts need to be motivators to get Ss started in right direction & help build confidence. Also need to challenge Ss #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A4 It's also our responsibility to be readers and writers and learners, model! #writebesidethem #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:38 PM EDT
Q5. How might a teacher hold Ss accountable for completing rdg/wrtg in a wkshp w/out forcing a specific process or due dates? #teachwriting
  • southernmainewp Oct 3 @ 9:39 PM EDT
A4 Ts make their content relevant to Ss' lives. Writing can exist in many ways and that will make all the difference #StuVoice #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:40 PM EDT
A5 - Best system I had was a "points" system - certain number of points for completed texts, draft pages, use of mini-lesson, #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:40 PM EDT
A5 Looking for answers to this question. I have no idea. Hoping to hear good ideas! #teachwriting
    • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:38 PM EDT
Q5. How might a teacher hold Ss accountable for completing rdg/wrtg in a wkshp w/out forcing a specific process or due dates? #teachwriting
  • T_HEB Oct 3 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A5 All major work stays in school. Mini lessons & individual conversations help guide Ss towards success with content & time. #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A5. Know your Ss. Know their needs, their capabilities, and their boundaries. Push them, check in with them, and monitor daily #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A5 - . . . and I decide when something is "done," and kids have to keep all draft pages. Stole the ideas from another T. #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A5 - Portfolios are also awesome. Revise and submit best work, including a reflection on process, receive big grade for that. #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:42 PM EDT
A5. I like the idea of doing an oral check-in every day for attendance. Ss say their title, genre, and goal for rdg or wrtg. #teachwriting
  • T_HEB Oct 3 @ 9:42 PM EDT
A5.2 I find that providing choice helps me meet the needs of my Ss while helping Ss stay motivated. #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:42 PM EDT
Also called "Status of the Class" in some writing workshop models. #teachwriting
    In reply to @upahk
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:43 PM EDT
With a points system, did you ever find Ss care more about points than the quality of writing? #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • dst6n01 Oct 3 @ 9:43 PM EDT
#teachwriting A5.there was a weekly expectation of progress.Ss were rated. The final piece was a multi genre portfolio, 2 I picked, 1 Ss
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A5 I had to use steps in the process to check off, else too many 8th graders did naught by chat. #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:44 PM EDT
Yes, unfortunately. Had to push some of them a little on completing/revising a text, instead of just trying to speed through. #TeachWriting
    In reply to @upahk
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:44 PM EDT
Q6. Is it an authentic workshop if the teacher assigns students’ topics and texts to write and read about? Why or why not? #teachwriting
  • dst6n01 Oct 3 @ 9:44 PM EDT
no, most really were interested in being better writers #teachwriting

    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A6 - Unfortunately, setting a kid completely free can sometimes be stifling. Too much freedom w/younger writers. Need guides #teachwriting
  • T_HEB Oct 3 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A6 Not quite but that is not a bad thing. Sometimes a single text or topic is needed to build culture/community/understanding. #teachwriting
    In reply to @upahk
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A6 - In middle school especially, kids need a balance between choice and constraint. Two or three genres, choice of topic, etc #teachwriting
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:47 PM EDT
Yes. This is where I tried to be strategic about standard & mentor texts. #teachwriting
    In reply to @bkuhl2you
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A6 - Or, in the menu/points system, you need one "big" text (with two choices for that), and one "small," with three choices, #teachwriting
  • upahk Oct 3 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A6. I think Ts can be afraid to hand over control... we worry Ss won't write without a prompt or read anything "worthwhile" #teachwriting
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A6 As a standard-based teacher, I say no. Voice & choice can be incorporated but ultimately, I want Ss to practice & succeed #teachwriting
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A6 We should make every effort to allow Ss choice while still teaching the standards. A true workshop=Ss choice, not assigned #teachwriting

Q7. How might a teacher assess students for participation and quality of work in a workshop model? #teachwriting
  • Perednia Oct 3 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A7 Participation is not part of standards-based grading. So that might help. #teachwriting
  • T_HEB Oct 3 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A7 This would be a wonderful opportunity for the whole class to define. Give the Q to the Ss. #teachwriting If not, through 1:1 conversation
    In reply to @upahk
  • Mrs_J_of_EAMS Oct 3 @ 9:54 PM EDT
A7 Portfolio grading. IMHO, the way to assess Ss growth over time. I use grade conferences, Ss prove grade w/ portfolio work. #teachwriting
  • bkuhl2you Oct 3 @ 9:54 PM EDT
A7 - It's hard to grade "participation," especially in a standards-based model. You can require peer feedback somehow. . . #teachwriting
  • tonyvarrato Oct 3 @ 9:54 PM EDT
A3 Book talks are amazing. Teachers show kids what books they love. And have copies on hand. Goal: get kids to share. #teachwriting
  • T_HEB Oct 3 @ 9:55 PM EDT

A7. I more worry about this with free reading. How can we know they're reading besides tracking page #'s? Not a fan of reports #teachwriting

A7 - I think sharing/publishing encourages quality, and being a kind of "gatekeeper" for "completion" helps, too. #teachwriting

A7b. Should add that I don't put a grade on anything; feedback only. Ss argue their own grade based on standards & their work. #teachwriting

Not objectively gradable, but I use reading conferences. I meet w/ students periodically to chat about their independent books #teachwriting

A7 - I think in a workshop, the teacher is encouraging the Ss to improve as a writer, not necessarily grading papers. #teachwriting

I rely on conference notes. They may fake a reading log, but they can't fake a conversation. #teachwriting

As part of free rdg I ask Ss to meet w a peer then w me after finishing rdg. Each S needs to lead 2 book talks during the yr. #TeachWriting

A7 - I think we can ask the kid to explain process, and grade their explanation or use of examples, but "quality" is hard. #teachwriting

Conferring can help. Knowing my kiddos and knowing who needed more attention helped more. #teachwriting

A7. I have thought about Ss including a letter with the final draft. What they did well, struggled with, and feel they earned #teachwriting

Q8. What research, authors, or books support the use of workshop models for further professional reading and discussion? #teachwriting
