Welcome to #ATchat. Our topic tonight is Technology Based Scaffolding Supports. Typical IEP accommodations promote dependence on adults. Technology tools break the cycle of dependence.
Let’s try something a little different as we chat tonight. Let’s compile a Google Doc of tips and tricks for scaffolding. Add your solutions to the Google Doc. #ATchathttps://t.co/XAqEerKyFH
Q1: What are the short-term and long-term consequences of dependence on adults that you observe in your work? How vital is is to break the cycle of dependence? #ATchat
A2 - I see learned helplessness in students as young as 3rd grade. We need to break the cycle and help teachers understand they are often promoting dependence on adults. #ATchat

I've been researching learned helplessness and the outlook is somewhat dire. I think the emphasis needs to be on avoiding it. However, we don't have enough information about how and when it begins. At home - as babies? #atchat
A1: I find a lot of difficulty with students indepdently developing a sense of when to communicate about what. They aren't sure when it is 'okay' to get someone's attention versus when to work indepdently. #ATchat
Students wait to see how little they have to do instead of showing their full capabilities. We don’t walk with the students as the leave for their real world experiences. #ATchat

I had a student who had a one/one until last year. He is 18. He didn't do anything without searching for an "okay." Now he does his morning routine and even gets up to use the bathroom without asking. #ATchat

Q1- Adults are doing students an injustice. As educators we need to foster independence, build self-confidence and to teach our students that mistakes are actually lessons. #ATchat
Q2: What are technology solutions that can break the cycle of dependence when providing scaffolding supports for students who struggle with reading comprehension and understanding content? #ATchat
Q1-One of my students had a one/one until last year. He is a senior. He wouldn't initiate conversation or try any assignments. We removed the one/one and he has grown so much. It is amazing to see how much social, emotional an academic growth he has made. #ATchat

Mixed feelings re 1:1. Kids with medical issues- important to have someone who picks up on cues. I find that some times 1:1 is the best things for Ss..just like everything else- what works for Ss #atchat
A2: Audiobooks, screen readers and smoop and actively learn. Listening of improved comprehension. Smoop breaks down tough cintenent into more understanding pieces. Actively learn allows teachers to have kids stop at certain points in text to answer questions #atchat

students need to be given more choices and a chance for advocacy before they leave HS. Adult system of care can easily leave those who can't speak up very much behind.
Apps like @EasySpellingAid and Co:Writer with their built-in spelling support have really helped many of the students I work with to become more independent learners. #atchat
I felt strongly that the adult was enabling him. She was an obstacle to his learning and independence. He needed to not be stuck on an iPad. He needed to use words and use technology that was appropriate for access. #Atchat
They offer the scaffolding that promote independence and success. Students more willing to take risks to use words that reflect their abilitites, despite spelling issues. #ATchat

Text overlay. Changes text presentation with color gradients. Can customize color and font. Research is emerging on efficacy, and I’m doing small samples, but @Bookshare adopted it as part of their reader. #ATChat

A2: Absolutely! Students who may limit the length of their writing or development of ideas are more willing to take those risks because we are removing the barrier that always stood in the way! #ATchat
Q3 What are technology solutions that can break the cycle of dependence when providing scaffolding supports for students who struggle with the writing process? #ATchat
And they are no longer dependent on asking adults, "How do you spell....?" #ATchat As a professor said once, "Spellling is the spoiler of thought." #ATchat

A2 - hey all! Running late from Iowa! I have to say a HUGE step forward has been the data! #uPAR gives Ss their voice back. Data speaks! All downhill from there. #ATchat
A3: Again, how often do Ss have to wait for a writing conference with T to make changes. #dependence. Use the Insert Comments features in G-Docs to avoid face to face and promote independence. #ATchat
A3: dictation can be a game changer for writing. Highly verbal students can just talk out their papers for the first draft. Then go back and make modifications as necessary. #atchat

So is it better to provide scaffolding options to demonstrate learning and not depend on text composition? Can use tools audio options like FlipGrid and insert Learning instead.#ATchat
I think parents also need to be educated. Too often the line has been crossed and boundaries are not respected. Parents believe that their children can't be independent and sometime 1:1 paraprofessionals reinforce that belief. #ATchat
A3- I like a writers workshop approach! Ss share writing, then utilize a collaborative space to provide feedback in real-time on platforms like GoogleDoc, WordOnline... #ATchat
Agreed! In my AT evals, I do a comparative analysis of written output to show how providing access to voice typing (sometimes even just a laptop/tablet) increases written output. #ATChat
A3- I love Clicker 7. I allows for creativity and independence. The Voice Notes and Super Keys are added features that can foster independence for the student. #ATchat

Sometimes using speech to text to read the paper back in an accent the student likes is more fun and entertaining. Students can both hear their mistakes and listen to a new accent. Of course is with students who don't have too much trouble processing auditory speech. #atchat
Still caring 4 my mom in Holland, Michigan - it’s snowing! Inconsistent connections. Will try 2 catch up and try to add 2 list of scaffolds. Jumping in, I teach readability feature in MS Word to get baseline, Text Compactor, Rewordify, and on-line summaries like Shmoop. #ATchat

Q4: What are technology solutions that can break the cycle of dependence when providing scaffolding supports for autistic students who have become prompt dependent? #ATchat
A4: Schedule apps are often key. We often try to fade to an iphone/ipod touch with a simple schedule app. It just looks like they are checking their phones. #ATchat
When we are demonstrating Read and Write from @texthelp , we always in the context of writing show text to speech as a powerful editing tool before submitting or peer editing. We say “just press play”! It works! #ATChat
I recommend that all the time. And Ts say, "But they don't want to be seen as different." My response, "Don't let them be different. Show all Ss!" #ATchat

A4: we are working on that with a student now. Using Apps such as ChoiceWorks, VisualSchedule Planner, Video Modeling and social stories, and low tech checklists and visuals. Many layers to break this cycle. #atchat
A4 - Use Schedule apps, Clicker apps, Bitsboard, Stages math. Even if they work independently for a minute to start, that is a beginning! Build on their independence. #ATchat
EVERY student and staff member has access for this reason. Feel very fortunate for this because it does break barriers for use and helps others who may benefit as well. #ATChat
not sure who this was aimed at, but I'm happy to share more regarding the existing research on BeeLine and our free school access program. DM for email address! #atchat

Q5: What are technology solutions that can break the cycle of dependence when providing scaffolding supports for students who struggle with EF skills? #ATchat
A5 - Get rid of Agendas and paper! Paper is the obstacle for so many Ss with EF issues. When we reduce the amount of paper for which they are responsible, organization issues dissipate. #ATchat
A5- Bitsboard is fantastic. Gives feedback and even my high school students love it and use for break time. It also reinforces skills being worked on in the classroom. #ATchat
A5: @NotabilityApp is a great tool that promotes organization when producing work! Even iOS built-in tools like Reminders or the iCal are great ways to promote organization and independence. #atchat
A5 - Provide Ss with materials in digital format and allow them to submit HW electronically. Still too many Ts want Ss to print their G-Docs! Organizational nightmare for Ss with EF challenges. #ATchat
I came across this in a 3 year old who came in for a speech/language evaluation. He was doing very little independently & his parents (through a translator) told me they didn’t expect independence as early as Americans seemed to. #ATchat
A6 - Quizizz. LIke Kahoot but better due to built-in supports. IN the iPad app, there is text to speech for Ss who need it. And the time pressure is removed. https://t.co/nkqO9QTkZB#ATchat
A6: pomodoro extension and forest app for helping block website and distractions on phone and computer so I - I mean the student - can focus on work #ATchat
It was a very interesting conversation to figure out some suggestions that would work for them to increase language development at home while they waited for services. As they talked independence right at the start, I’m guessing they’d run into the difference before. #ATchat
Unfortunately, my partner in crime @mmatp was unable to join us tonight. He thought he would be able to drop in but it didn't work out. Next week! #ATchat
