A1 140 taught me to be more concise and strategic with my wording. 280 will teach me not to abuse the amount of characters I have to use. #MakeItReal

  • Stella_Pollard Nov 8 @ 9:38 PM EST
A1: I don’t use Twitter in my classroom. I know; shocking. Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough. So… PD? #MakeItReal

  • mandyeellis Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1: hoping for detail, links to resources, or additional hashtags #MakeItReal

    Thanks for coming to #MakeItReal
    In reply to @waddellsworld, @BryanCountyMS
  • MPapaEdu Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1: 280 characters = more sharing. My @twitter #pln is by far my best resource for learning, so it can only be better. I'm so used to 140 though. Going to take a bit to adjust. #MakeItReal
  • JayBilly2 Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1: The main benefit would be better grammar and impeccable typing skill that we don't usually see. Also the chance to write complete sentences without hyphenating and shortening #MakeItReal
  • RichHayzler Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1: More opportunities to grow by hearing (in more detail) about what others are doing in the classroom. It is also a great example of how you can express ideas and concepts with your students in short, concise ways and in more expressive ways! #makeitreal
  • PegGrafwallner Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1 Maybe a better way to share thoughts w/ PLN & better ways to learn. But, we need to be aware that sometimes less really is more. #MakeItReal
  • cooper1503 Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1 I am conflicted. Less chars. = more concise dialogue. More chars = more depth. #makeitreal
  • sknighttech Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1: I anticipate the return of grammatically correct sentences for starters; however, that may be wishful thinking. #MakeItReal
  • 3Realley Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1 280 character on twitter allows me to tag more colleagues & not struggle so much with abbreviating ideas to the point that my meaning might not be clear #MakeItReal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
Love it. Can e still maintain the integrity of the concise message with more characters? HAe to try #MakeItReal

Adjustment period is necessary. In fact, I'm still tweeting in almost all under 140. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @MPapaEdu, @Twitter
  • SlaterPBISMN Nov 8 @ 9:41 PM EST
A1 More details around great ideas and strategies from amazing educators. No more A1.2 answers on Twitter. #MakeItReal
  • MPapaEdu Nov 8 @ 9:41 PM EST
Proper use of semicolon! 🙏 #MakeItReal
    In reply to @sknighttech
  • PCookTech Nov 8 @ 9:41 PM EST
A1 I'm longwinded, Twitter forced me to condense those thoughts. I'll focus on keeping my precision but being able to share bigger ideas and concepts without resorting to threaded tweets! #MakeItReal
  • faria_lila Nov 8 @ 9:41 PM EST
    A1 #MakeItReal I don't use Twitter in my classrooms yet, so I don't really know :(
    In reply to @MathDenisNJ
  • nina_pearsall Nov 8 @ 9:41 PM EST
A1 It does allow for more more detail and depth while still having to respond within a limit. It will be interesting to see the change. #MakeItReal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:42 PM EST
Clarity in communication. Absolutely a major benefit. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @JayBilly2
  • themaurywood Nov 8 @ 9:42 PM EST
A1: I can actually write a complete thought and not have to worry about numbers. It is aggravating when I have to go back and change letters to numbers. Sometimes I like to give more credit to others as well. #makeitreal
  • BrianHerb17 Nov 8 @ 9:42 PM EST
Tagging more people is a nice bonus. I still like being forced to keep it short. #MakeItReal

#MakeItReal A1 probably chats like this will still be short BUT hoping follow up support will be richer when the panicked rush is over
  • sknighttech Nov 8 @ 9:42 PM EST
Amen. I feel like important information and resources get cut due to lack of characters. #MakeItReal

Some things change, some stay the same. Question 2 is coming up in 1 minute! #MakeItReal
  • waddellsworld Nov 8 @ 9:43 PM EST
A1: Our principal @missliz31 has really encouraged us to #tellourstory on Twitter this year through sharing student activities and other information. Increased character limit allows me to be more specific/descriptive in this endeavor. #MakeItReal
  • BrianHerb17 Nov 8 @ 9:43 PM EST
    Joining late. Hello #MakeItReal
  • PCookTech Nov 8 @ 9:43 PM EST
Yes, the credit piece is key! Will be nice to give a shout out to people instead of changing and to & ! #MakeItReal
    In reply to @themaurywood
  • themaurywood Nov 8 @ 9:43 PM EST
A1: I still want to keep it concise, but it does relieve some of the worrying about "you are almost out of room." #makeitreal
  • MPapaEdu Nov 8 @ 9:43 PM EST
A1.2 Much more useful for my school account I manage. Often times I find I had to leave out important info that wouldn't fit. 280 = better communication! #MakeItReal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:43 PM EST
I anticipate that and/or additional lists of hashtags for advertising sake. I promise to do my best to not be a 5 word plus 50 hashtag tweeter! #MakeItReal
    In reply to @sknighttech
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:44 PM EST
Q2: What were some of the things you valued most about having a lesser limit to tweet characters? #MakeItReal
  • PCookTech Nov 8 @ 9:44 PM EST
Twitter as a budgetary tool. I love it. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @sknighttech, @mandyeellis
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:44 PM EST
Many times I've wanted to tag more people to broaden a conversation. This def helps there #MakeItReal
    In reply to @3Realley
  • faria_lila Nov 8 @ 9:44 PM EST
(Jumping in) I completely acknowledge that over-#-ing is my future. Hopefully it'll allow me & my students to connect more. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @MathDenisNJ, @sknighttech
  • sdtitmas Nov 8 @ 9:44 PM EST
Agreed Maury! That was the annoying part. I was to make sure I don’t start saying TOO much though. #MakeItReal

Hello! My name is Jessica and I teach a grade 3 class in Regina, SK. Canada 🇨🇦 #MakeItReal
  • BrianHerb17 Nov 8 @ 9:45 PM EST
A1 More space is nice, but as an English teacher and writer, I appreciate concise writing. Twitter encourages that. #MakeItReal
  • sknighttech Nov 8 @ 9:45 PM EST
The opportunity to make more global connections in a Tweet will be valuable. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @themaurywood
  • LA_Trepanier Nov 8 @ 9:45 PM EST
A2: The preciseness and simple matter of fact statements and information. #MakeItReal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:45 PM EST

  • sdtitmas Nov 8 @ 9:45 PM EST
This is just what I was thinking! #MakeItReal
    In reply to @PCookTech
  • SteinbrinkLaura Nov 8 @ 9:45 PM EST
A2: The creativity necessary by the constraint of the character limit was actually a good thing, and these longer answers take longer to read through... #MakeItReal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:45 PM EST
    Welcome #MakeItReal
    In reply to @BrianHerb17
  • JayBilly2 Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
A2: Forced us to make our point quickly. Didn't have to read that much. Like email, more than three lines and I delete it. You have to be more thoughtful and hit key points. If I wanted facebook, I'd flip to that #MakeItReal
  • daniellelhare Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
A1. The 280 character limit is better. Tagging more colleagues and providing more information or links is great! I am finding now I want 300!! #MakeItReal
  • twoguysde Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
    A1: Nothing...It’s impossible I abbreviate assessment when in a character crunch 🙄🙄🙄#MakeItReal
  • themaurywood Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
A2: It made me be quick and to the point. I relied on my pictures and gifs to do some of the talking. #gifsarenotgoinganywhere #longerhashtagsarecoming #makeitreal
  • faria_lila Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
#MakeItReal might be less applicable to me than I thought, so I'm jumping off. Gonna join the #WeirdEd chat in 15 min, though; enjoy the chat & see some of you there, I hope!
  • ms_held_teacher Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
A1: More in depth reflecting w/ colleagues around the country! #makeitreal
  • MPapaEdu Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
Q2: 140 made it easier to edit my thoughts. It changed my thinking in a way. Also, conciseness is an acquired skill we should all hone. #MakeItReal
  • SteinbrinkLaura Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
#MakeItReal Ha. So many characters to use helped me forget to put the hashtag. :)
    • SteinbrinkLaura Nov 8 @ 9:40 PM EST
A1: As an Eng teacher, I now don't have to use numbers for words or have to code messages w/Ts and Ss or decipher the code of others. I don't have students use Twitter in class, since we use other mediums that aren't banned by the District. So really it appeases my grammar OCD.
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
Welcome to #MakeItReal ! Thanks for joining us tonight as we talk about the new twitter 280 character limit!
    In reply to @wesaquje
  • wesaquje Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
A1: The benefit for me is that I feel I can share deeper thoughts on subject matters that deserve that extra space. #MakeItReal
  • RichHayzler Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2:Helped me get straight to the point when expressing thoughts and ideas. It actually helped me in my admin role when dealing with staff and students. Make what you say concise and meaningful. Most people only hear the first few things you say anyway! #makeitreal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
It also allows more descriptive writing now, which I appreciate as well. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @BrianHerb17
  • BrianHerb17 Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2 It was a challenge, a puzzle, often a lot like crafting a poem. We had to think and plan and choose our words carefully. #MakeItReal
  • JayBilly2 Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
Exactly! Some more than others #MakeItReal
    • MPapaEdu Nov 8 @ 9:46 PM EST
Q2: 140 made it easier to edit my thoughts. It changed my thinking in a way. Also, conciseness is an acquired skill we should all hone. #MakeItReal
  • sdtitmas Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2 Condensing my thoughts made me constantly reflect on what I was trying to say, and what were the most important points to share. #MakeItReal
  • PCookTech Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2 Forcing the 140 meant every character counted (2x as much as now, in fact). Tweets HAD to be precise or they'd lose effectiveness. Who actually reads multi-tweet rants anyhow? #MakeItReal
  • wesaquje Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2: You had to be concise and to the point! #MakeItReal
  • 3Realley Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2 I liked 140 for quick look at ideas. I could always follow up if I needed more info. Too long & I scroll past #MakeItReal
  • sknighttech Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2 The limit truly helped me learn to be concise and cut down on my verbosity! It became a personal game I played with Twitter. #MakeItReal
  • ms_held_teacher Nov 8 @ 9:48 PM EST
A2: I️ had to be more concise w/ my words. I️ tend to get too wordy 😳 #makeitreal
  • nina_pearsall Nov 8 @ 9:48 PM EST
A2 Less characters forced you to be direct and only include what was most important. As the reader, its easy to read main topic- like a headline catching your attention #MakeItReal
  • PCookTech Nov 8 @ 9:48 PM EST
You said this much more effectively than I did. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @wesaquje
  • mjcraw Nov 8 @ 9:48 PM EST
A2: There's something important about constraints for creativity, terseness, clarity, etc. --> https://t.co/aeCu4bcPBz Yes, the more-but-limited characters is still a constraint, but it feels different after having navigated lesser for so long #MakeItReal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:48 PM EST
A2: the limit not only helped me be concise, but helped me choose my messages wisely. Sometimes, when too long, I realized they were better off not said. #MakeItReal
  • sdtitmas Nov 8 @ 9:48 PM EST
  • waddellsworld Nov 8 @ 9:49 PM EST
A2: As a new to Twitter user, the limited character really made me be conscientious about word choice. 🤔🤔📝📝#hardchoices #MakeItReal
  • PegGrafwallner Nov 8 @ 9:49 PM EST
A2 True, but as an Eng T, I hated abbreviating my words. It reminded me too much of my Ss poor writing! #makeitreal
    • sdtitmas Nov 8 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2 Condensing my thoughts made me constantly reflect on what I was trying to say, and what were the most important points to share. #MakeItReal
  • MPapaEdu Nov 8 @ 9:49 PM EST
I like that. Tweeting as an art form. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @BrianHerb17
  • BrianHerb17 Nov 8 @ 9:49 PM EST
"Better off not said" - recognizing that is a skill all student writers need. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @MathDenisNJ
  • PCookTech Nov 8 @ 9:49 PM EST
It also made me realize sometimes my thoughts were independent and needn't be combined in a single Tweet. Imposed order on a chaotic mind. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @MathDenisNJ
  • sdtitmas Nov 8 @ 9:49 PM EST
Jay Billy dropping the hammer on this one! Something for me to consider when sending emails. #MakeItReal
    In reply to @JayBilly2
  • daniellelhare Nov 8 @ 9:49 PM EST
A2 with the character limit, tweets were quick and easy to read. Only the most relevant information made it to the tweet! #MakeItReal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:50 PM EST
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Question 3, coming up in 1 minute! #MakeItReal
  • MathDenisNJ - Moderator Nov 8 @ 9:50 PM EST
Exactly! I don't want twitter to become email! If I heard from @JayBilly2 on twitter, I knew it was important! Must keep that mindset #MakeItReal
    In reply to @JayBilly2, @JayBilly2
  • gjfairchild Nov 8 @ 9:50 PM EST
A2: I like the quick, to-the-point, messages to read and write. I would be fine with even less characters! #MakeItReal
  • JayBilly2 Nov 8 @ 9:50 PM EST
Ha, I have an ADD problem. My supt even knows. Don't do it she wants me to read it #MakeItReal

Absolutely! Know your target audience. My younger staff Won't read emails that present as books. Likewise, senior staff consider Tweets inadequate. #MakeItReal

I agree, Peg! There were certainly 👍 and 👎. I also found myself accident using Ss and Ts in my emails which I hated. #MakeItReal

A3: Empowers them. Makes them feel smarter and valuable. I have let a S teach a mini-lesson before because they figured out how to do something I could not. It made their day. We as educators can learn as well. #makeitreal

A3 Our students must have a voice in our room. Their voice may take many forms but no matter what, they have to be heard! #MakeItReal #studentvoice

A3: More #stuvoice can never be wrong. Empowering our Ss to speak out is an essential part of our job as educators. With 280, using @twitter in class can be even more impactful. #MakeItReal
  • RichHayzler Nov 8 @ 9:53 PM EST
A3: Using @flipgrid and setting time limits on questions allows you to see how students think when limited to an amount of time. Find that they are able to express the same things just in different ways! #makeitreal
  • BrianHerb17 Nov 8 @ 9:53 PM EST
A3 Limited classroom time is one reason for limiting student voice. Digital and blended learning offer options for more voice. #MakeItReal
  • SteinbrinkLaura Nov 8 @ 9:53 PM EST
A3: More voice time for Ss allows you to get input from more students if not all of them in a class period. Limiting their voice time helps them focus on what is absolutely essential & refine their response. #MakeItReal
  • PegGrafwallner Nov 8 @ 9:53 PM EST
A3 As I work with Ts, I'm encouraging them to keep voice time to smaller increments so Ss can stay focused on the topic instead of digressing. Takes some practice, but works #MakeItReal
  • gjfairchild Nov 8 @ 9:53 PM EST
A3: Ss will need to learn to have a voice, but also learn to be concise and on point. Our responsibility to teach them. #MakeItReal
  • CoachGruis Nov 8 @ 9:53 PM EST
A2: Lesser was easier to read others thoughts and ideas. Self reflection on being precise, too! #MakeItReal

A3 Lots of voice time =lots of sharing, chances to clarify, explain. Less voice time= clear, concise answers & thought before speaking #MakeItReal
  • LA_Trepanier Nov 8 @ 9:54 PM EST
A3: Giving more voice time allows for beneficial, deep, and thoughtful class discussions. While limiting voice time also provides for discovery through other avenues than speech. #MakeItReal

A3 Depends how you set up your classroom and lesson. More voice time could mean more student engagement and ownership of learning by empowering students. #makeitreal
  • PCookTech Nov 8 @ 9:54 PM EST
A3 Depends on the student! Some Ss benefit from more time to speak, processes, be acknowledged & valued etc. Others benefit from being forced to clarify and sharpen their thoughts. Know your Ss! #MakeItReal
  • CoachGruis Nov 8 @ 9:54 PM EST
Q3: Limiting Ss time helps them to learn to listen. Too often, Ss and Ts have a "mind full" and are not "mindful" enough to genuinely listen #MakeItReal
  • BrianHerb17 Nov 8 @ 9:54 PM EST
A3 Also, having limits encourages students to choose words wisely, offer answers that they know add to the conversation. #MakeItReal

Hey everyone, I'm not a fan of 280 bc I think sometimes we all get long-winded and I appreciated the conciseness of twitter #MakeItReal I loved chats where I could filter tweets quickly but now... I don't know how it will be
  • PCookTech Nov 8 @ 9:57 PM EST

A3: ✅ 🗣= discussion of content is always a ➕and it also helps me gauge their understanding. Teaching others is right at the top of Bloom's 🔺. Limited student voice can help them get to the point and provide a quick check of basic recall. #MakeItReal
  • rinkutalk Nov 8 @ 9:57 PM EST
A2 Tweet chats- shorter answers made it more engaging. I did crave for larger space whn i had to write my answers n it wudn't fit, but ironically reading long answers isn't really exciting :( #280characters #makeitreal

What I've seen tonight is a tendency toward the shorter tweets, with the occasional longer with need for explanation. I can handle that. If they all get longer, we can set new limits. Half the blue circle only!! #MakeItReal
