Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
Happy Sunday evening to you & welcome to #IAedChat! I’m excited about the topic tonight on #IAedChat - Gaining Traction in the Inconsistency of the Polar Vortex of 2019.
It’s a grave concern. Many schools are working through almost a dozen snow days. Join the #IAedChat family as we problem solve through this relevant issue in midwestern schools. @danpbutler@DuffysClassroom@townsleyaj
Kim-Instructional Coach at Benton Community checking in for a bit tonight and glad it is dark outside so I can’t see the snow out of the window! #iaedchat
Hi everyone! I am Jon, the Instructional Coach Facilitator for South Tama Schools. What a great topic tonight, and perfect for the weather we have experienced all day. #iaedchat
#iaedchat Margo Redlinger 2nd grade teacher at Keystone Elementary in Keystone IA- hair is DRENCHED from sledding in my yard and coming at cha literally from my dinner table :)
Q1: Some districts have missed as many as twelve days of school this winter. What is the most challenging element of inconsistency in your setting? #IAedChat
A1 I have seen a definite increase in behavior among our kids. Their energy levels are off the charts and it feels as though we’re are starting over a lot. #iaedchat
Teacher friends in the midwest (and other places dramatically impacted by the winter weather this year), you should join in the conversation on #iaedchat tonight!
A1 lack of routine is hard on this 36 year old...that totally trickles down to all of the littles in our lives-at home and at school. Lack of routine+lack of fresh air=stir crazy minds! #iaedchat
A1: At my school, one of the challenges is making sure kids aren't slipping with previous content especially as we were trying to finish FAST. With a 1st grader at home, we were reading constantly (which she does w/o struggle) & practicing math facts (struggle to max). #IAedChat
A1: In my setting, I help support a lot of weekly and monthly PL. Missed days mean a lot of shuffling / canceling of PL until the end of the year. Meaningful and timely PL doesn’t always happen at the end of the year. #IAedChat
A1: Professionally one of the challenges has been getting meetings/district supports rescheduled--due to calendars and needed subs and now moved days. Personally, getting my kids on a schedule again has been a real challenge. #IaEdChat
A1: Since the majority of our students at @dordtcollege live on campus, we rarely cancel class. That said, we did have one day this winter that we decided for the safety of students walking across campus, we would cancel class. #iaedchat
Q1: Some districts have missed as many as twelve days of school this winter. What is the most challenging element of inconsistency in your setting? #IAedChat
Q1: Some districts have missed as many as twelve days of school this winter. What is the most challenging element of inconsistency in your setting? #IAedChat
A1. The biggest challenges I have witness and heard from teachers is the impacts on instruction time and more time on classroom management to keep routines in place. #iaedchat
A1: One of the nice things about teaching in higher ed is that my students have learned, “Mulder never cancels class.” If for some reason I can’t be there, we have class online instead. #iaedchat
Yes, Jove! Not only has it been snowy but the extreme cold means indoor recess- the most loved phrase of every elementary teacher. We need to get outside and run! #iaedchat
A1 I have seen a definite increase in behavior among our kids. Their energy levels are off the charts and it feels as though we’re are starting over a lot. #iaedchat
A1: With all the missed days, the biggest challenge next to behavior is retention of academic material. Some kids I have not seen for 3 weeks and counting now due to the snow days or scheduled extracurricular events that pull them from school to travel. #iaedchat
A1: The biggest challenge is continuity in learning for kids. Working on projects has been a struggle even with kiddos working their hardest. #iaedchat
I feel you! I was a middle school science teacher before moving to teacher ed, and it’s really difficult when you have 25 minute class meetings to keep the hands-on science happening. #iaedchat
It really does. But I also understand the importance of student and staff safety as well. It makes this a difficult time for all stakeholders in education. #iaedchat
A1: Implementing ideas and action steps. It’s been hard to stay committed to certain action plans because as soon as we gain traction we are off again! Also, consistency for kids. We have called less days but we have had lots of absences so getting kids caught up. #IAedChat
A1: It is no doubt that the inconsistency of structured learning and the longevity of the weather weighs on everyone's mental health. We can complain or embrace. There is a need to keep culture strong to overcome obstacles. Keep consistent and celebrate more often! #iaedchat
#iaedchat A1: Our kids have been very verbal about how much they miss school, which is always nice to hear! I live in a daily panic attack personally worried if I can get them properly ready by the end of the year-
A2: In my role, I have to try to stay efficient with my schedule. LOTS of rescheduled meetings mean squeezing in discussions - especially with the plethora of ESSA planning meetings! ! #IAedChat
A2: We have to just "dig in" and keep the focus on what we can do while we have the kids at school. We've worked at reviewing expectations when they return from a couple days in a row. Overall, we just keep pushin'! #IAedChat
A2: Over the past four weeks, our teachers have done some serious prioritizing with the limited time they have had. You really have to consider what is vital in the limited time you have and make it happen as best you can. Tough for everyone. #iaedchat
For teachers using flipped classroom or blended models, it’s only a short hop to having a fully online lesson. Not ideal in all situations, of course, but for repeated winter weather days…? Might be worth considering! #iaedchat
A2 we need to have expectations for our students when we miss school, what can they work on? Can we flip lessons? What materials should they always have at hand at home. #iaedchat
A2: I made some videos to send to my kids via DoJo to review some concepts while they are away, and then looking at my schedule to prioritize what I'm teaching.
#iaedchat
A2: This year in particular shows the importance of utilizing a LMS to maintain consistent learning opportunities and conversations going via a digital platform. #iaedchat
A2 leveraging the communication tools that we have set up is a great way to keep the previously taught skills sharp while at home. Be creative & don’t be afraid to have some fun with it! No better time to play with some virtual learning tools then on your couch! #iaedchat
On a happier note I did do IGDI assessments and I know at least my students are retaining information previously taught even through winter break and all these snow days off! #iaedchat
So many challenges, however as a G/T teacher I do not see students as often and we are staring at 4th reschedule of our InventionConvention for our district & possible no reschedule which means students put heart in their inventions and now may not be able to publicly display
A2. Really paying attention to touch key concepts CONSTANTLY! Reinforce, reinforce, reinforce. Also little 10 minute projects, draw what you observe type stuff. More than I want, but gotta have time to digest. #IAedChat
A2b I also think that as school leaders we need to find a way to make sure that the schedule doesn’t become to lop sides if they are missing particular times of the morning or afternoon #iaedchat
Couldn't agree with you more, Dawn. I am currently having that inner struggle right now. What needs to be rescheduled and what can be thrown away? #iaedchat
A2: In my role it’s taking the long term vision and revising it in weekly and daily action steps. Just because we miss school doesn’t mean things shouldn’t move forwards just have to take a different approach! #iaedchat
A2: Streamlining content to ensure we are focusing on main ideas is key. Also, including recall practice, and interleaving content to help keep multiple plates a-spinnin’ can help. #iaedchat
A2: As a staff remember, rescheduling and finding time for all the missed meetings has been huge struggle. Reschedule our tech meeting at least 6 times already.
#iaedchat
I’ve used this before when my class load was 40 S, but with over 100, the preload time was too great to teach the how to do it. Hard to do on the fly. #iaedchat
In reply to
@d_mulder, @MikeAlbarracin, @dawnrkruse
A2.2: When I do get back in the classroom, I spend time checking in with the kids and reteach expectations. I have found that taking the time to remind the Ss what we are working on, what we have done to this point, and reviewing those steps before moving on has helped. #iaedchat
Q3: Missed time now likely mean a longer school year. How do you plan to keep learning meaningful when the urge to check out creeps in during May/June? #IAedChat
#iaedchat A2: This has been a perfect time to one on one goal set with students on where they are at and what we can do together to get them to where they need to be
A3: Use as much project based learning as I can- making it hands on and real life skills
*We are making up days earlier in the year, hoping to still have kids out at the end of May.
#iaedchat
Q3: Missed time now likely mean a longer school year. How do you plan to keep learning meaningful when the urge to check out creeps in during May/June? #IAedChat
A3: I think you keep interest by ensuring learning is rigorous, relevant and real world applicable! Have kids solve problems and relate content to what kids are interested in! #iaedchat
A3: I have to say, this is one thing I do NOT miss about teaching in K12! The check-out-in-May game is a fight anyway, and when we have had inconsistency in the spring anyway, it’s all the more challenging. #iaedchat
Q3: Missed time now likely mean a longer school year. How do you plan to keep learning meaningful when the urge to check out creeps in during May/June? #IAedChat
A3: High quality engagement and relevancy is just as important for adults as it is for students. Keeping this in mind will be necessary and helpful in the planning process in May and June. #IAedChat
A3: You have to keep your teaching innovative when it creeps into May/June with authentic, meaningful learning. Our HS Ts do a May Term and the Ss really enjoy that! #IAedChat
A3 After baseball starts? Keep learning? Wowza, last two CSD’s I was in, after baseball, it was a HUGE challenge. Can’t imagine how June is gonna feel. #IAedChat
A3 this is tough but a big part of this is that we keep the hammer down and keep teaching. The adults need to continue use to model the importance of learning and continue to have highly engaging lessons #iaedchat
A3 great opportunity to tap into student interest topics to tie your standards and create mini PBL unit-helps with motivation for students and staff! #iaedchat
A3: One of the most irritating things I hear is "By the end of May, it's really just babysitting." No. Don't give permission to check out and not try. Keep the expectations high and keep the learning engaging. Kids don't check out from stuff they're passionate about. #IAedChat
A3: That is definitely a worry! Obviously learning has been spotty this winter and I am worried about it being spotty in the late spring. We have to keep "what's best for students" at the forefront! #iaedchat
Yes, Jim! I totally agree. We set the tone, we set the expectation. If we're just waiting out the end of the year, kids will get restless and more learning is lost. #iaedchat
Always been a believer of adult attitude sets the tone for student learning. If we gear down, students gear down. #FinishStrong and control what we can control.
Q3: When pressed for time in the winter months, much time and effort should be spent on literacy and math. That leaves science and social studies to be made up more in May/June which are great for engagement and outdoor learning. #iaedchat
A3: High quality engagement and relevancy is just as important for adults as it is for students. Keeping this in mind will be necessary and helpful in the planning process in May and June. #IAedChat
#iaedchat A3: It is going to be all about attitude, if you wish you were on break so will S's, if you embrace it (outdoor classroom) it can be amazing and memorable learning!
A3: If we happen to move later in the school year, I know I have the flexibility to move the dates on some target learning objectives to account for the missed days. We'll just bend and flex as we need to for the kids! #iaedchat
Q3: Missed time now likely mean a longer school year. How do you plan to keep learning meaningful when the urge to check out creeps in during May/June? #IAedChat
We are making up a day tomorrow, and taking away the 2 inservice days after Easter and making them student days, putting the inservice at the end of the year. #iaedchat
A3. Real, relevant/relatable lessons may mean giving up some T control to dialogue with Ss about what they want/need. If you empower Ss to share their passions, lessons become more creative/imaginative, & give Ss opportunity to lead their learning. #iaedchat
A3: Continue to create meaningful experiences for students and staff members. Our kids will check out when the adults around them check out. An added challenge, perhaps this year. I do know this, if we vocalize our issues with this challenge, we are dead in the water. #iaedchat
A3: One of the most irritating things I hear is "By the end of May, it's really just babysitting." No. Don't give permission to check out and not try. Keep the expectations high and keep the learning engaging. Kids don't check out from stuff they're passionate about. #IAedChat

A3. I can remember some snow years in the past when we missed a similar number of days, and for me it worked to keep the established routines the same. I felt that as soon as I stepped away from the norm, then student behavior and expectations lowered as well. #iaedchat
Totally agree with you, but, and a big but, when the sun sets later so does bedtime. Have to take into account sleep patterns and activity patterns change and this has a significant impact on attention while in the seat. #iaedchat

A3. In my experience, what keeps Ss motivated is a motivated teacher. If you have a passion for teaching, Ss are more likely to show a passion for learning. However, it also works the other way round: if you don't care about teaching, Ss won't care about learning. #iaedchat
Great point, Brett! Activities stretch later in to the evening and it's a challenge. That's why we have the privilege of designing engaging stuff and showing up with high energy through the end. #iaedchat
All over, Dave. Districts and superintendents are being as creative as they can to make things work with the flexibility they have in master calendars. #iaedchat
Wild. My high schooler’s school added some extra time to each school day to ensure they meet the count for instructional hours. It’s been a crazy year. #iaedchat

A3. Ask Ss to work in pairs or groups. Get them out of their seats & moving. Ask them to change partners regularly. To keep Ss’ attention, set a variety of engaging, meaningful activities, & create a friendly atmosphere where Ss feel they can talk freely & ask ques. #iaedchat
A4: Something similar to this as a poster in which students can use sticky notes with their names and something they got stuck on (Red); think they know pretty well but might need more practice (Yellow); or something they grasp easily and can do (Green). #IAedChat
A4: We have a super cool tool called standards tracker that allows Ts to track daily progress toward learning targets. Even better though, is having kids self monitor and partner monitor their daily progress. We have classrooms doing this in fun ways! #IAedChat
A4: Class Dojo- have students send me a picture, video or journal entry of something I have asked them to respond to. I can see them and comment back to them, as well as they can share it with their parents.
#iaedchat
A4: I've used the quiz form on google classroom to take formal and informal assessments. It takes a little time to set up but does a great job of highlighting what the most commonly missed items are. Great feedback for adjusting instruction #iaedchat
I plan to do some engaging hands on activities/projects as a science teacher and to try relate it to their own experiences/life as much as possible! #iaedchat

A4 our elementary buildings are all @Seesaw schools. We are still all over the place with implementation and how we use it, but it has great potential across the board. #iaedchat
A4: I don't know about slick; however, I love all things Google Forms to check for understanding with kids, but also to get quick and accurate feedback from staff. One of my favorite tools. #iaedchat

Q5: How might technology be leveraged to counteract inconsistency or missed school days? What are the advantages/disadvantages to this approach? #IAedChat
A5: I love being able to send videos and messages to my students via Class DoJo on no school days. Students often send me things back of things they are doing or completing the "challenges" I send them. Another way to still feel connected. #iaedchat
Q5: How might technology be leveraged to counteract inconsistency or missed school days? What are the advantages/disadvantages to this approach? #IAedChat
A5: Many educators are not trained to leverage the online learning environment. It’s not the same as the face-to-face learning environment, and moves that work f2f may or may not translate well online. #iaedchat
Q5: How might technology be leveraged to counteract inconsistency or missed school days? What are the advantages/disadvantages to this approach? #IAedChat
A5 provides parents with resources-sometimes it isn’t that families aren’t willing, they just don’t know what direction to go...tech can help with that #iaedchat
A5 Using google classroom and go formative to push our work for students along with flipped lessons can keep students advancing. Internet connectivity can be an issue as well as availability to their devices #iaedchat
A5: It should especially be utilized for Ts to have relevant and engaging PL snow days when Ts are stuck at home. I have heard great things about a PL @AnnaUpah planned for staff at #BentonCSD to take part in during last week’s snow storm! #IAedChat
A5: Technology provides an avenue for learning even if we aren't in the same place with the same 4 walls. We have to begin to rethink what school "looks" like with the opportunities available. This looks different for different ages of kids, and isn't perfect. #iaedchat
A5: There is so much that we can do with video or screen casting to provoke thought, relay information, and accomplish tasks. I don't care so much about the platform; however, I feel strongly about the power of video. #iaedchat
A5: I think now, more then ever, instruction needs to be very intentional and differentiated to meet the needs of learners. Technology can be used to have a variety of lessons that kids can use in small groups and help differentiation! #IAedChat
A5: Learning can happen anytime, anywhere and great teachers increase the likelihood that students are making connections with their content outside of their classroom. Technology is the driver to allow this to happen. #iaedchat
A5: Without going all infomercial on you, consider joining the EdTech track of our M.Ed program at @DordtEDUC. We literally have courses on E-learning design, online teaching, emerging EdTech and more. #iaedchathttps://t.co/jfi2YY6dU6
True, Dave. Designing and facilitating online learning is different from face to face. Takes a bit of work to navigate how to make it meaningful. #iaedchat
A5. Class through internet access. Disadv. -not all Ss have access to internet, internet outages, power outages. Adv.- learning continuous b/ in and out of school. #iaedchat
A5: We need to engage students in ways that are outside our 4 walls of school. We need to all embrace the power of technology to enhance learning outside of what we consider a school day. #iaedchat
A5: The disadvantage to a digital approach in this context is not every student might not have internet access. There is also the concern of Ss that are on a restricted user list due to poor online choices that severely limit their access to online material as well. #iaedchat
I’m biased, because a significant part of my doctoral work (in EdTech) was connected to online learning, social presence, instructional design, etc. I love online learning, and it has tremendous potential, but it’s a different experience for sure. #iaedchat
A5.2: The plus side, technology can help bridge those snow days so that learning can continue with as little interruption as possible. The culture established in the school will determine how successful this could be. #iaedchat
Online learning is not “less than” compared to f2f. But it is experientially different for both learners and instructors. We definitely can use online teaching in K12 though! #iaedchat
A5: This creates an equity issue. Certainly not all of our students have the same environment and opportunities for learning to take place at home without a teacher. #iaedchat
Q5: How might technology be leveraged to counteract inconsistency or missed school days? What are the advantages/disadvantages to this approach? #IAedChat
A5. There has to be a realization that education is changing. Ss learn more outside of school than inside. Fact. Much of that from @YouTube. Whether we like it or not, it is where Ss are. It's not a matter if "if we choose to use it".. it is "how will we use it". #iaedchat
A5: Google classroom helped quite a bit! We were working on a science project and students were able to have the instructions and ability to access from home. As a result there we many who were able to work on their project and home and turn assignments in. #iaedchat

A6: There are kids who count on breakfast and lunch, kids who need structure and consistency, kids who are safer at school than at home. However, when weather makes things dangerous, there's no easy decision. #iaedchat
A6:
HOT FOOD! Lost instructional days mean fewer hot meals for kids who count on them.
ROUTINE! Many (including my family) thrive off of a routine!
SCHEDULES! Many missed meetings mean rescheduled meetings squeezed into a more crowded and stacked calendar. #IAedChat
A6: Such a simple but impactful thing: Student sleep schedules! This leads to so many avoidable issues. Grumpy, sleepy, (this is not the 7 Dwarfs) unfocused, and just plain over it. #iaedchat
Q5: How might technology be leveraged to counteract inconsistency or missed school days? What are the advantages/disadvantages to this approach? #IAedChat
A6: The system loses any momentum gained in taking actionable steps forward, Ss lack resources that the school usually provides and just routines in general. #iaedchat
A6 Students Lowe the reliability of those they count on, relationships and slide backwards and students struggle with following expectations because they are out of routine, kids don’t get to run and play and get that excess energy out. #iaedchat
I don’t disagree with you at all on this! Interaction is KEY—learning is social. But there are ways to do this really, really well in online settings, and ways to do it poorly as well. Online learning is not monolithic. Just like f2f teaching, there are lots of methods. #iaedchat
#iaedchat#iaedchat A5 We have eLearning days in Indiana for snow days. One of the great resources we use is @useloom. Allows you to video tape your lessons for Ss. 3 days in a row is the limit for eLearning. Problem we battle is home internet for Ss. We do give time to makeup.
A6: For me, it has been just a series of false starts. Our longest stretch of consistency occurred on Thursday and Friday of last week. First time we have had consecutive full days in four weeks. It's tough to gain any type of traction and momentum. #iaedchat
A6. Learning in the classroom by the Ss, amount of information being retained by Ss for growth, everyday out their losing information and not gaining. #iaedchat
A6: For some Ss, school might be the most consistent environment they have. These lost instructional days could affect some students sense of safety if they don't know what to expect lately. #iaedchat
A6: Professional learning and team meetings. It’s harder to gain momentum in these areas when we have snow days and early outs. I love @townsleyaj’s idea of online PL and we could use Zoom meetings to get people together. #IAedChat
A6: Behaviors, especially for those who need the consistency the most. Mental health of students and adults gets knocked off kilter as well. (Yes, "kilter" is a word. Confirmed by Google. @danpbutler "I love all things Google.") #iaedchat

A6.2: This is also a tough time for parents as well. Kids being away from school is not a good thing. Parents of younger children need to stay home and find day care. Quite a challenge for them as well. #iaedchat
A6. There are also impacts on teacher learning as well. Coaching cycles are impacted with planning periods missed or shortened instruction time. Plus, missed PD time due to schedule changes. #iaedchat
A6: Behaviors, especially for those who need the consistency the most. Mental health of students and adults gets knocked off kilter as well. (Yes, "kilter" is a word. Confirmed by Google. @danpbutler "I love all things Google.") #iaedchat
A6: For some students the inconsistency affects their emotional and mental health especially if they use school as their way to connect with peers and adults and use it as their way to feel safe and loved #iaedchat
A7: This is where professionalism comes in. We do the best we can for our students, our families, our colleagues, our communities, and even ourselves. Take pride in ourselves…and take care of ourselves! #iaedchat
A7:
*Knowing there is so much to do before PT conferences in 3 weeks!!!
* Knowing its @Cardinals baseball season (which means spring is almost here!)
*Getting to see their excited faces each day we do have school
#iaedchat
A7: That there is more awesome learning and experiences to have with my Ss but first @casas_jimmy is visiting Emmetsburg tomorrow for our district PD! #iaedchat
A7: We might only have one day impacted by weather this week. That's a positive! Actually, I can't wait to get back to kids tomorrow and be in classrooms connecting with students and staff. #iaedchat
A7 hey, the snow days make me really sit back and realize how much I love my job, my students, and my co-workers. If nothing else the culture inside our building could be off the charts if we make sure and share that appreciation! #iaedchat
A7: My students did research projects on chemical interactions in their every day lives. Some of them worked really hard on this and had some interesting topics. I’m so excited to hear the students present to each other what they learned! #iaedchat
A7: Every minute with kids in the classroom is minute to help a kid grow. I choose to spend time focusing on what I can do rather than focus on the time that was lost. #iaedchat
Every day counts. Every opportunity I engage with kids, staff and families matters. That’s what I will try to always remember through the inconsistency and hardship of this season! #IAedChat
A7 I miss our staff and our kids I’m motivated to see them again and spend time with us all working together taking risks, growing and collaborating together #iaedchat
A7: Seek the good. See the good. Be the good.
Positivity, but not in an irrational “everything is fine” way. Simply choosing to emphasize goodness. #iaedchat
A7: Every minute with kids in the classroom is minute to help a kid grow. I choose to spend time focusing on what I can do rather than focus on the time that was lost. #iaedchat
