A1 Kris McClure-Coleman here. Work in Issaquah Washington as an instructional Technology Specialist and Health and PE support Specialist. Was a Elem. PE teacher for 18 years. #seesawchat
Q2; We are just starting Genius Hour; we will use @Seesaw to document our learning and journey. Students take responsibility for their own learning and share with their peers.
#seesawchat
A2: Ss are given lots of opp for voice and choice in our room, reflecting and deciding what their best learning is and how they want to share it! #Seesawchat
A2. give students the opportunity to be the teacher. In P.E. my students have had the chance to make up activities using a choice of equipment and then teach the activity to the class. Sometimes they used @seesaw to video the final product. #seesawchat
A2 we just fresh on the seesaw journey a couple months ago, but the kids have loved putting their friday reflections up on seesaw to share with parents. been great for parents to hear how the students view their learning #Seesawchat
A2: In our math block, Ss self check their own work. If their work is all correct they become an expert. As they work on their challenge activity, Ss can visit them to ask questions. We also give opportunities to choose what they want to learn in our passion projects. #SeesawChat
A2 Ss are given morning time to explore, create, ask questions and utilitize classroom resources like building materials, paper, and the classroom library. Their creations always end up on seesaw 😊 #seesawchat
#seesawchat Q2: My students are given choice in my room to demonstrate their learning. They can naturally take on leadership roles this way too. Many even do independent studies.
A2 my kids do “morning tubs” and have the opportunity to share what they do on seesaw. This week my gifted student chose to draw and explain that he knew how to do 2 digit addition. That was ALL him. He also sets multiple goals and puts them in his online journal. #seesawchat
#Seesawchat
A2 Seesaw allows students to have Voice and Choice. Teacher poses a question or assigns task and students are allowed to use any tools within Seesaw to answer/complete task.
A2 students becomeleaders of their learning when you give them the responsibility to make their own choices. When I use Seesaw I like to give my first graders a chance to explore the features of the app so they can be as creative as possible. #seesawchat
A3: Ss can select what they want to include in their portfolios. With our limited technology, I struggle with having students select Wow Work to post on Seesaw. Currently, Ss select their Wow Work they want to share with the class on the blog. #SeesawChat
A3: Honestly, this is an area I’m looking more to grow in. Building those digital portfolios will be an awesome way to document their learning and to show growth! #studentdrivendata#Seesawchat
A3: Ss can review their work on seesaw and place their best work in a folder. A great way to reflect on learning. Totally thought of this AFTER p/t conferences. There’s always next year. #seesawchat
A3 When Ss take ownership over the pieces they choose to share. They can explain their thinking and choose their best pieces. Also having the opportunity to edit a piece. #seesawchat
A3 at the moment we are full paper portfolio, which is purely teacher driven.Just the way the school has always done it. I see in the future with the help of seesaw that we start the digital seesaw portfolio with an essential agreement/understanding and kids drive it! #seesawchat
Q4 Guiding students to what is important and should be included in a portfolio is a part of helping them to become leaders of their learning. What do you encourage students to include in their portfolio? #Seesawchat
A3 Seesaw allows students to capture every part of their learning process. From the beginning stages through mastery/exemplar status. By giving students the choice to select what is included in theirs portfolios, they can share any or all parts of their learning! 💕#seesawchat
A3: At the end of a marking period; I ask students to choose &reflect on their book selections &choices. They share their posts to our blog #seesawchat
#Seesawchat A3 My Kinders are always amazed at the growth they make throughout the year. Seesaw allows them to reflect on their learning and celebrate growth.
A4 This is always the delicate dance, the cha cha if you will.I think co constructing what a good example is then kids being able to articulate why they want to share this piece of learning is generally good enough for me.I think educating parents first is critical!! #Seesawchat
A4 The other day I did a quick FA before we started a unit. This gave me an opportunity to see what they know and it gives their parents an opportunity to see what we are learning and their thinking. . Towards the end of our unit s can go back and reflect on their FA. #seesawchat
Q4 I encourage kids to include anything they want their parents or me to see. Much of their Seesaw work is done while I'm meeting with reading or math groups, so it helps them communicate with me and helps me hold them accountable at the same time. #seesawchat
A3. Student lead conferences are a great place to use @seesaw. Students can chose best work or posts they are proud of. A Conference folder is created for them to place this work. Then they can lead their parents through their learning. #seesawchat
A4: When I first started using @Seesaw with students I only focused on their “WOW” work. After my 3rd year of Seesaw, I encourage reflection and going back to old posts to share growth. I encourage Ss to show all parts of their learning and not just the end product. #seesawchat
A4 I believe in the power of conferencing with my 4th graders on a regular basis because they seem to know what’s best for them. My school, @CoyMillerElem, believes in setting goals and tracking those goals, so Ss can choose. #SeesawChat
A4: I am a strong believer that students should reflect or comment on what they include in their portfolio. I want them to be selective and thoughtful about what they include. It doesn't have to be perfect work; but it should be something that has meaning.
#seesawchat
#Seesawchat A4 My students share EVERY task/assignment completed thoroughout our day. I even made a folder titled "Just Sharing" for non academic submissions via Seesaw. (love notes, silly selfies, weekend tales)
A4 As the year progresses my standards increase in sept. We post anything just to get the hang of it. By now I expect clear video and pics and a clear voice when speaking and neat handwriting/labeling 😊 #seesawchat
Q4 I also encourage the shy students to share what they want me or the class to see but are too afraid to stand in front of all of us at once. My students share anything from morning work, to reading fluency, to word work, and math games. #seesawchat
A3:I like Ss to evaluate their work and choose what they want to keep and delete in their @Seesaw. Once they see it from the perspective of an audience, they see if it is a WOW or not #seesawchat
I totally agree!! Some of my quietest students really shine on @Seesaw. It gives them a way to share what they are truly capable of without the pressure of sharing in front of an audience (class). #SeesawChat
Q5 Students need an authentic audience for their learning and creations. This audience gives their learning purpose. Does sharing their learning and progress help students to become leaders and reflect on their growth? #Seesawchat
Yes I have the same type of folder! I don’t want to take away from the excitement but sometimes it can get silly and silly/social pieces don’t go in academic folders #seesawchat
A4 I encourage them to include recordings of their reading. Explanations for math work. I also encourage them to share a piece that they are excited about. #seesawchat
A3: I love that Seesaw allows us to see the growth of our Ss. I also love that parents see various activities throughout our day of what their child is learning. An amazing tool! #SeesawChat

A5 unbelievably yes. At our school before Seesaw, it was hard to share the learning with the world/give it that authenticity .Plus we are boarding school so parents didn't often get in to the class. Now, kids know that someone is watching/caring/impressed #seesawchat
A4. Scaffolding can be an important step in having students post in @Seesaw. Having the ability to review posts before they are published helps. #seesawchat.
Educating parents is real. The way students learn is not the way they learned in school. But if we want to prepare students for a workforce unlike what is out there, then we have to teach them in a new way. #SeesawChat
A5 I think so. It also helps that I can give feedback on their posts. Many then choose to take my comments and grow by doing another related journal entry. They also love to see parent comments which encourages them to "show off" and do even better the next time! #seesawchat
A5 there is so much research that supports the idea that a broadened audience encourages higher levels of learning. I like that SeeSaw allows students’ families from all over to view and comment on their learning...is there a way to reach even more people? #SeesawChat
A5 Once we were connected to other @Seesaw blogs &the students realized that other students(who they didn’t know) were looking at & commenting on their work, it was a game changer! They put more effort into their posts & were more thoughtful when commenting on others. #seesawchat
A2- We are all experts... so fostering a growth mindset community empowers Ss to lead, learn, and get smarter from each other. #seesawchat#weareallteachers
A4 #seesawchat It can be any “activity” that they complete or their best written texts or a Mother’s day card where Ss recorded their voice. We even tried #BookSnaps ! I love the fact that parents see/ hear what their child is able to do..
A5: The "thing" that attracted me to @Seesaw in the beginning was the opportunity to share creations, projects, and work that normally would be trapped on a device and no one would ever see it. @Seesaw has given students a platform like no other to share their learning.
Q4: Since I teach 1st graders, I have to teach them that everything doesn’t go in their portfolio. I do ask them to introduce themselves in posts. Also, I ask them not to post the same activity over and over. #Seesawchat
Yes! The process is so important. They have an assumption that only the end result counts and how they got there doesn’t matter. Reflection and capturing the moments along they way help. #SeesawChat
A5 I think it helps students “find their voice” when they know they have an audience. I encourage students to view each other’s work and give “likes” and positive comments #seesawchat

A5 Knowing that their families will see their work has been very powerful. Ss are more reflective and will edit a piece more carefully. They love when they get comments and likes. #seesawchat
A5: Audience does not give learning purpose. Purpose has to be meaningful to the learner first, & that may or may not attract an audience that also cares. Too many Ss base their self worth & quality of their learning process on audience reactions & approval. #seesawchat#digcit

A6: My folders are more and more specific each year. Instead of Math; we have folders like Fractions - Unit 9; the title of our guided reading novel; etc. It makes it so much easier to find at the end of the year when we choose our "Best of the Year" work. #SeesawChat
A6 I think explicitdirections as to which folder to add it to helps. I also think that it allows students to manage their work without loosing a paper. Which I LOVE!!!#seesawchat
Folders! My Ks are becoming pros with idetinfying which area of academics they are working on. Honestly, this is the first year my Ss know the diff between word study, writing, math etc. 😂 #seesawchat
She's literally just starting. Previous teacher used it a little. Interested in the empowering aspect described in this chat -- don't suspect it'll be used to that extent so I want to be aware of the bigger possibilities. #SeesawChat

Seesaw allows parents to have a starting point for a conversation with their child. My personal kids like to answer the “How was your day?” with one word. #seesawchat
A5 #SeesawChat At the beginning of the year, I told parents to “like” or comment their child’s work on @Seesaw . I sometimes stop a lesson to inform a kid that Mom or Dad liked their work. I do that in front of the whole group. Ss know the work has to be more than good.
Spend time capturing the little moments. Do it as a class. Use your mini lesson time to also “stop and jot” or “stop and snap” notes or pics on @Seesaw about what you’re learning rather than an end product. Then eventuallymove on to having them independently do it. #seesawchat

A6 I have to do better with this. We do use folders, but I am still editing posts into the right folder. Next year I was thinking about having the Ss have some ownership over the types of folders we use. #seesawchat
A3-we share our WOW! Work on @Seesaw and then continue to push our leading and learning by making digitally responsible comments that help nudge us to grow even more! #starternotender#seesawchat
A6 we are an @ibpyp school so currently have the folders split between the transdisciplinary themes. But the last few months have just been about the whole school getting up and running using all the functions and connecting parents. It was hectic! hahaha #seesawchat
If learning experiences are meaningful enough in purpose, they would happen with or without an audience. The best learning happens when the learner cares the most about the learning, audience or not. #seesawchat
A6 I'm a relative newbie to Seesaw. This is my 1st year, so the only folder I have now is for my Gifted and Talented group. My next hurdle is using folders for the whole class. Also, the activities tab has helped CONSIDERABLY! #seesawchat
Posting those little moments are great opportunities to spark a conversation for parents with their child. My students love it when I "catch" them in action and post it to the journal. It provides great dinnertime chats and allows them to take the lead in sharing. #seesawchat

A6 teaching process teaches kids to be thinkers. Kids can use seesaw for “think alouds”. They can edit writing or solve math problems. This is much more meaningful than getting a paper back from me that I have corrected for them #seesawchat
@csmithsmarties thanks so much! Was great fun this morning, enjoyed hearing from a wide range of people on a different continent, Having to bow out and get into school! #Seesawchat Keep living that @Seesaw dream ✌️
I think they can see the big picture of how it all fits w/the end result so much easier—at any age. Kids are like little factories, so often. They only want to do what’s on the conveyor belt in from of them&then it goes away&they never see how the parts make the whole #seesawchat

Q5: Students are leaders when sharing with an authentic audience because they are learning to understand feedback. And, use it to grow/make their work better. #seesawchat
Also - I know you're busy being a rock star moderator of #SeesawChat, but if you have time at 8 PM EDT we're about to have our first student-led #Bunceechat!

A7 I think Ss take a more active role in their learning when they choose what tools they use to create & how they demo their learning w/ #seesaw#SeesawChat
A7: Use @Seesaw to allow students to demonstrate their understanding of a topic; share their creativity; post a response to a question; explain a process; etc. This is one of my favorite posts that shows all that work goes into learning - https://t.co/SLJzP51DQN#seesawchat
Q6: I don’t really have a tool to keep them organized on Seesaw, but would love to hear what everyone is doing. I am just making sure they make their station rotation to post on Seesaw. #seesawchat
In a P.E. setting @seesaw is a great way for parents to see what is actually going on in a P.E. class. This helps me show that PE is not a "break from learning", but that their child IS learning. Helps me advocate for my program. #seesawchat

A7 Ss can choose how they want to show their knowledge. I often have a variety of activities for them to choose from and they can always give me their own ideas too! #SeesawChat
A7 #seesawchat Today teams of Ss videotaped themselves presenting to another team of Ss. They watched the recording to improve their presentation in front of the whole class tomorrow
Do they post every rotation on SeeSaw? I have some activities that I want to use as centers and have them take pictures and reflect at the end of centers. #SeesawChat
Thanks for joining tonight’s #Seesawchat! Take an idea and help your students to take leadership in their learning no matter their age. Connect with educators you have “met” and collaborated with tonight. Have a great night!

A7 Ask Ss to come up with ideas for what to post. Last year, my Ss brainstormed ideas to share books. One way THEY came up with was to create a “Book Recommendations” folder in @Seesaw. I didn’t put any restrictions on what or how they shared. It was AMAZING! 🎉#seesawchat
A7 Probably the best thing I've done this year is to have them post specific goals. Then when they meet the goal they create a new one. I don't tell them a goal...THEY choose an academic goal and a non-academic goal. It keeps them in charge and motivated. #seesawchat
Thanks so much for joining us for #seesawchat, and special thanks to @csmithsmarties for hosting. Be sure to follow others in the chat to grow your PLN!
A6 my teammate and I have set up folders between our classes. She uses it for ELAR and Ss and I use it for Math Science. It’s a quick easy way to check their work. #SeesawChat
Yes! It allows them to go back and actually see their progress. Ie: Fluency recording at beginning, middle and end of the school year. They go back to each to see their progress and decide what to work on w/ & w/o teacher guidance. #SeesawChat
