Lori, 6th/7th grade life science, Took my first trip to Los Angeles. Beach, hiking, Jimmy Kimmel taping, and a photo with Dr. Travis from The Doctors (and The Bachelor) #scitlap
Just got back from a team run in WI, Andrea MS Instructional Coach... definitely looking forward to participating in the Global Leadership Summit starting tomorrow! #scitlap
Yaaaayyyyyy! It's time for my favorite chat. The one and only #scitlap! So many adventures this summer, but 2 highlights were a beach house in NJ and a camping trip in NH!
Q1) How would your students describe your first week of class? How about the first month of your class? Name sample lessons OR types of lessons that you include. #scitlap
A1) I still do the play-doh lesson on the first day. Great for building relationships from the start and not getting bogged down in rules and such. #scitlap
A1: unlike anything they’ve experienced. Oath of no tears on the non textbook, play doh building, quiz about me, and making rules by creating memes #scitlap
I did the marshmallow challenge last year for team building and it went well. Ss enjoyed it and we then had a common experience for talking about team work. #scitlap
@tantasquaap and @trjhs_principal feel free to jump in this chat with my science pirate friends PLN. Tonight is based on a book I want to read next and maybe start a book study! #scitlap
A1. First week will be grounded in building community. Throughout the first month will too. Speed dating and a team digital breakout are two of my favorites. #scitlap
A1: First week of class is so busy! Lots of schedule changes and movement within classes. I usually start with lab safety - kinda boring I know. #scitlap
A2:teach the skill explicitly like how to find a partner and then practice with team building activities. Last year I didn’t explicitly teach these sorts of things and I wish I had!! #scitlap
A1) day 1: S make claim about cup challenge & play, Day 2 collect evidence Day three tie together CEI format, write up and share. M of 1st full week we'll talk policies (as some of mine are quite dif) #scitlap
Q1) How would your students describe your first week of class? How about the first month of your class? Name sample lessons OR types of lessons that you include. #scitlap
A1 I know how they describe their first day....awesome! No rules, no blah, blah, blah teacher talk. Just a fun kick-off experiment to ignite that spark! #scitlap
OK I'm back. A2) I do a "mystery cubes" lesson (originally part of an NIH module about science inquiry) DRIVES KIDS CRAZY because they never find out "what's on the bottom of the mystery cube" #scitlap
A2: I think you can work team building into your curricular activities, so hybrid. But getting that culture in place and building relationshios, getting to KNOW your kids is huge #scitlap
I literally can't read my @dbc_inc books any faster. Every one is just amazing and inspiring and then #HiveSummit , ugh I need 2 more months of summer! EduProtocol is up next! #scitlap
A2 Our first few days have assemblies and truncated periods. We discuss what science is and isn't. We do a fun sci lab like drops on a penny to discuss sci thinking. #scitlap
I try to incorporate some team building activities in the first few days - I have an awesome digital breakout that I am dying to try as soon as I get my computers #scitlap
Q3B) One premise of #EDUProtocols is front loading the teaching with “lesson frames” so that you can change up with content. Ss don’t have to spend time learning several varied structures and can focus on the content. How does that sound to you? #scitlap
that is great! I had quite a few tears last year when I taught physics - the students couldn't handle the math. I had to say daily "there is no crying in physics" #scitlap
A3: Been working a lot on backwards design. What is the final product? What are the checkpoints or the formative pieces that need to be done to lead to that successful final product? What is the learning that needs to be done content/skill? And then insert content. #scitlap
a3b #SciTlap I love this idea. Less directions, less wasted time! My one concern is will it keep ss engaged still in March? Will it have staying power? Let's find out!
A3 It sounds great! In reality I don't do "frames" other than the common #NYSSLS#NGSS lab sheet I've adapted from a PD. My video notes and quizzes are predictable in format and timing. #scitlap
A3: not really a "lesson shell" exactly, but I am using frayer models a lot more - I ask that they are colorful and we hang them up in the classroom. I also use memes daily #scitlap
Q4) Start the year with “smart start” lesson frames and students will feel confident when presented with the structure later in the year. Example one: Frayer model. Great for science vocabulary, right? Start with “Frayer a friend” (cont) #scitlap
More of a unit design but ...Working on a template that would put all the practices and Crosscutting Concepts into a unit (if you wanted - you could also take out ones you don’t need) #NGSS#SciTlap
I love it because it allows for intentional points for feedback leading to improve a final product. It also allows for more personalization for the content or the project. #scitlap
A3 Not knowing exactly what this means... I'd say that I use the same format to introduce each chapter. It includes learning, goals, Vocab, focus strategies, and activities(used as a kind of "hook" #scitlap
I'm struggling with this myself and I jumped to ahead to #balanceLAP and have been giving myself grace. I can't read/do it all. I need to set more realistic expectations. #scitlap
A1 wk1 is busy and dynamic. Week 2 more of the same. Some classroom protocols, introduction to NGSS SEPs, some engineering challenges, iPad Bootcamp. Putting divider tabs in as directed is always a 1st day challenge. #scitlap
Ain't that the truth! I should read #balanceLAP too. My goal this year is to keep a life of my own going outside of school, have a healthier balance. #scitlap
GREAT - tweetdeck is NOT cooperating so well. I'm having a hard time keeping up in real time, but am hoping you can jump in with your experiences using the lesson frames :) #scitlap
A2 I would say my challenges and protocols build community. Also I get to engage with Ss immediately and observe how they work together. We do focus and welcome directly all the new Ss on our base. #scitlap
Q5) In my pre-planning week, admin loves “things that suck” to get us moving around and debate some polarizing topics. One smart start titled “things that rock” is a variation of this activity. Great to get to know classmates for a range of ideas. Have you tried? #scitlap
a3 I'm trying to set up an unit-end reflection that includes content summaries, work accomplished, struggles and victories that could work for math and science. Haven't quite worked it out- yet .
#SciTlap
Q7) My middle schoolers STRUGGLE with public speaking, even in front of the room. A GREAT kickoff is THE WORST PRESO EVER to learn presentation building skills AND get practice presenting. (cont) #scitlap
I did this in my first session of my first ever EdCamp. It was live it or hate it. The first topic was homework and I ended up all by myself on the hate it side, lol. #scitlap#ditchhw
Q7) (cont) Use this link https://t.co/D0jnmLVxq2
HILARIOUS! Ss present on a low stakes topic: pets, music, sports, etc. Break ONE rule per slide. Thoughts? #scitlap
I'm hoping the pause in comments is due to everyone watching the posted youtube video...Honestly, how many of you are going to try to find the "not clean" version of this? #scitlap
A7: I often shared TED Talks and had students pull the qualities out of a good presentation and then they helped to form the success criteria for their own presentations. #scitlap
I always worry about my ELL Ss when doing presentations. I need to give them LOTS of time to prepare. No matter how low stakes it is. In another language it is high stakes. #scitlap
A7 My end of the year TED Talks are fun b/c we practice speaking from the heart instead of memorizing. Some still nervous, so the can record, or only record voice with pics, etc. #scitlap
Although, @jcoripo and @mhebern make a good distinction, between thick and thin slide decks. The rules this video is breaking definitely hold for thin decks (i.e. presentation aids). There's a place for thick decks too (e.g. hyperdocs)! #scitlap
Sharing, stealing (with love), borrowing, inspiring....Twitter PLNs are just the best....until you get to meet these amazing peeps IRL. My list of this growing....so fun! #scitlap
Looking specifically at building a toolkit of strategies to support Ss learning. I'm also going to look to see how I can model these protocols in staff learning. #scitlap
For presentations I usually have each student present a slide, tell me how they helped their group, and then report what grade they think they should get as a group and why. #scitlap
I really like the idea of thick and thin slides in #EDUProtocols . Makes so much sense and solidified pedagogically what I had been thinking in terms of slides. #scitlap
@SciTeach7Davis Thanks for a fun chat. Literally this is exactly what I needed to get fired up for the incoming Ss. Can't wait to read #EDUProtocols and check out the website. Glad @jcorippo was able to peak in a little. Thanks #scitlap peeps. Love you! ☠️🖤
