Susan Spellman Cann Calgary Alberta years of exp. too many to count #scchat always happy to join in Happy #nscw19 as well as Canadian School Counselling Week
My name is Erin Williams! I am from Detroit! I’m a Middle School Counselor at Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods, MI! This is my 2nd yr in the role of a SC!
Angela from Maine! Been so sick this week so I've missed all the #NSCW19 celebrations at school, eager to get back in there tomorrow to talk it up! #scchat
A1) I always saw education as my way "out" but knew teaching wasn't for me. I fell in love with psychology, so school counseling became a natural fit. I'm so happy I stumbled upon it. #scchat
A1: Everyday is a new adventure with school counseling. You never know what's going to happen. There's variety in tasks: lessons, groups, individual counseling, etc. You get to share your positivity with others and help them find their PASSION and PURPOSE. #scchat
Alicia Clifford, from Roscoe, IL but work in Southern WI as a MS/HS Counselor. I’ve had three previous years at the middle level and one year at the elementary. #scchat
A1: Started out first working in the classroom but the conversations and relationship building led me down the path of counseling, and I couldn’t be happier! #scchat
Ha! I was going to be an elem. ed. teacher and didn't like handling a WHOLE classroom during my pre-student teaching practicum...always gravitated to and focused on small groups or individuals...but still LOVED being in a school. I wanted to know their stories. #scchat
A1 #scchat - love working w/ kids and my own HS counselor (Sherrie Mitchell) from @WCHSCARDINALS made a huge difference in my life. Still keep in touch with her through Facebook
A1: I began as a science teacher. Taught for 9 years. Started Counseling degree when I realized I LOVED talking to students about their life and their issues more than protons and neutrons. First class...knew I was heading to my favorite career. #scchat
A1: As a teacher, I worked in a setting where my student’s home life was not the best. I liked the “counseling” I did with them to help them and I wanted to do more of it. I also grew up with epilepsy and didn’t have the best counselors. I wanted to be a better example. #scchat
A1: I was drawn to middle school counseling because my own experience had been challenging. Working w students was a way to combine my psych degree, interpersonal skills, creative edge. #scchat
A1: Thought I was going to be a med. doc. Nope. Took psychology - hooked. Wanted to reach as many kids as possible and be a systemic change agent = school counselor #scchat
A1: My family went through a lot of issues when my children were in elementary school and I wanted to be the support for kids and parents that I had and fill some gaps. #scchat
A1: I thought I never wanted to get back into a school after I graduated...little did I know school counseling is where my passion would lie! The nonprofit world led me to it! #scchat
A1: Wasn't "drawn" to working at a middle school, but my Internship was also my job as a Middle School Counselor. 10 years later, I can't imagine counseling at any other level. The randomness and action of the day is truly indescribable #scchat
I agree. I had a lot of issues all throughout my school experience with friends and relationships, which caused my grades to drop. I connect well with kids like me and being my genuine self, sometimes I can help them turn it around. #scchat
A1: Thought I was going to be a med. doc. Nope. Took psychology - hooked. Wanted to reach as many kids as possible and be a systemic change agent = school counselor #scchat
A1: HA! I was going to be an elem. ed. teacher but didn't like being in charge of the WHOLE class - gravitated to small groups/individuals. Wanted to know their stories. LOVED being in a school though. #scchat
A1: My main goal was to be a mentor, especially in the black community. I stumbled upon the Counseling Prog at Wayne State University after figuring out their Speech Pathology Prog didn’t fit my schedule. Through my goal of mentor ship, evolved me into a #SC. #scchat
One minute the students are like seniors, the next adorable children. So incredible to be a part of that experience with them. You just can't take yourself too seriously. #scchat
My high school English teacher (SV) dared me to tell my counselor I wanted to be a school counselor because she took me out of his class to talk about future plans. I did it on a dare, walked out with info on how to become an SC, and eventually did it haha. #scchat

A2) Highlights. My goodness, I could go on for days. Seeing that student walk across the stage when they thought it'd never happen. Being told, "I think I'll keep trying." Watching those squirrely 14 year olds turn into full grown adults. #scchat
A2: I just recently went through my "cheer up" file of notes from former students. One shared that she was seriously considering hurting herself due to traumatic family issues, but she thought of how much I cared and she knew she couldn't do it. #scchat
A2: Highlights? That's a tough one. Personally, it is all the moments that a student really made positive growth and I was part of it. At a MS, seeing Ss leave on last day of 8th grade and they give you a big hug and say Thanks. Wow....you can't beat that feeling. #scchat
A2 #scchat Being named SCOY and meeting Michelle Obama in DC last year! Attending a high school graduation of a former 8th grader who may not have made it. Seeing my former kiddo graduate from COLLEGE. So rewarding. 13 years, never gets old.
A2: I have two, both from when I was in HS. 1st: I helped a student graduate last year. He was so close to not graduating. Completed credit recovery 2 days before graduation. Watching him walk across the stage and having him hug me brought tears to my eyes. #scchat
A2: Very challenging behaviors calming down, advocacy for awfully difficult situations, seeing a quiet student perform on stage, seeing a student make a small achievement with such pride...#scchat
A2 #scchat Also 1) when I'm able to help a child not harm themselves after suicide ideation, by referring to further support and 2) when a student comes out to me for the first time because they trust me. N no words to describe the honor
A2: In truth it is the small wins and moments with students that have meant the most and shaped me. BUT the privilege of having taught the last TWO @ASCAtweets SCOYs is a pretty sweet recent highlight! #scchat#nscw19@BrianColemanCPS@KPerry9777
A2) One of the best highlights was telling a senior he would graduate after he struggled through losing his mom. I pulled him out of class and we cried happy tears together. Sadly, he was tragically killed a few months later. Both one of the happiest and sadest memories. #scchat
A2: I once worked as a long term sub counselor and really pushed a struggling senior to pass his English class. On the last day of school he found out that he passed and could graduate. He found me and gave me a hug. He thanked me for not giving up on him #scchat
A2: Professionally, it was easily this last weekend with going to D.C. as #SCOY19 rep from Iowa. Meeting the best counselors from other states and being so inspired. #scchat
A2: Hard to think of a specific event; it's mostly those moments with students when you can see that you've made a connection with a student and they know it, too. #scchat#relationshipsmatter
A2: The 2nd, I can't share the full story, but I am excited to say the student went on to get a major role in the school play after some major struggles. So proud of him! #scchat
A2: 2nd highlight - attending a graduation party of a former 8th grader. He took me to see all his awards and said "I have you to thank for all of these, you believed in me and gave me a chance." #scchat
A1 #scchat I wanted to be the person kids could open up to, trust, talk to. I felt they all needed that person in their lives and I thought I could be that change. It also was FUN. The first day I went to middle school internship I was HOOKED I loved the energy, fast pace, change
A2: A2: Being selected as @HenryCountyBOE School Counselor of the Year in October, was amazing, but finding out 3 siblings were being formally adopted after being in foster care their whole elementary career, was pretty amazing as well! #scchat
A2: Reading notes of thanks from kids with specific examples of how I helped, earning district and local counselor awards, finishing my doctorate while being a school counselor, core curriculum in urban ed! #scchat
A2: I had an intern (who I don't supervise this semester) unexpectedly call me today to tell me about a defining moment she had helping two students, confirmation that she is meant to be a school counselor. It made my day that she wanted to share it with me! #scchat
A1: I started my career as an elementary teacher. I went into teaching because I wanted to help kids who struggled, especially personally. I also loved Character Ed. and thought counseling would be a good fit! #scchat
A2: Oh, I do have one! Counseling my first student through a social/emotional issue without help and having my supervisor tell me I handled it perfectly! #scchat
A2: Getting the notes that say "Thank you for always being there" or "Thank you for listening to me" are some more of those little moments that mean a lot! #scchat
A1: I really struggled in school - both academically and finding my place socially. I couldn’t identify an adult in the building I could trust and rely on SO I decided to become that person for my students! ❤️ I strive to be their champion everyday. #scchat
#scchat - save those notes as they become more meaningful over time. I've started to realize even more how much school counselors impact SO many students.
A2: Getting the notes that say "Thank you for always being there" or "Thank you for listening to me" are some more of those little moments that mean a lot! #scchat
A2. This is my third year as a counselor. Greatest highlights have included the contact I’ve continued to have with students who have moved on and also seeing students grow and find strength through their difficulties. #scchat
#scchat - save those notes as they become more meaningful over time. I've started to realize even more how much school counselors impact SO many students.
A2: Getting the notes that say "Thank you for always being there" or "Thank you for listening to me" are some more of those little moments that mean a lot! #scchat
A2 I remember in my internship there was a student in crisis, my supervisor let me handle the student while she contacted the parents. At the end of my time with him, he said “You’re too good at what you do, I almost forgot how bad I feel”. #scchat
A3) Having a good support network and PLN who just get it. I keep in close contact with my grad school friends and counselors outside my own school so I have unbiased people who can relate. #scchat
A2: Becoming a RAMP recognized program. Working with countless students and seeing them either accomplish goals or begin the arduous process of accomplishing them. Each and every time a student trusts me enough to share some of the broken pieces of their heart #scchat
#scchat A2 - Jim, MS counselor from Texas, joining late. My biggest memories are the little moments. Like the time, I found a live rooster in a school locker, or listening to a kid explain something and thinking, " There is no way to make this stuff up." Keeps me young!
A3: I'm passionate about working with people and helping students. Knowing each day I walk through the door, there will be adults who have a goal of helping kids and kids who need someone to listen, to care, to help. Those things keep me going. #scchat
Definitely!!! I'm so glad when I see students all grown up and that they recognize ME --and say something. They change so much....but love reconnecting! #scchat
A3: My kids/ students! They need me. I was in a bad car accident the first week of school. One day I was having a particularly tough day and one of my kids asked me if I was okay. He spent a few minutes trying to make me laugh because he said that's what I do for him. #scchat
#scchat A2: Building positive counseling relationships with Ss. Starting a diversity club for Latino students after partnering with a local university. Working in a bilingual school my first year as a counselor. And getting to know really awesome coworkers.
A2: Getting personalized shoutouts on the P.A. from my kiddos, receiving thank you notes from them, when I’m on hallway duty: my kids swarm me for their attention, when my 8th Grader thought she failed the grade but we collaborated and she passed #scchat
Having staff who you can laugh and cry with is key. Being a school counselor, you do both and so do teachers. Nice to have co-workers who know this and understand this. Finding a way to laugh each day is soooo important! #scchat
A3: Colleagues. Every day is different and they go so FAST. Knowing that teachers appreciate all the little bits of support I give them and the kids even though they all want more. My son telling me tonight that being a SC sounds fun....because of all the "drama." #scchat
A1 I wanted to counsel and help students with social-emotional problems but I realized that many of the students who needed counseling either didn’t have the resources or the support to get outside therapy, so I decided those kids needed me inside the school #scchat
A3. I couldn’t do it without my family, friends, students, and co-workers. Finding ways to care for my own mental health, including therapy. Also, those small victories with students motivate me to keep going. #scchat
A3: Our supportive community! Connecting with SCs and SCEs online, at conferences, catching up over coffee or meals. We are NEVER in this alone and that means everything on the toughest days. #scchat
This is true! I couldn't do it without my school counselor colleagues either. Going through the process of trying to get a permanent job, they've always been there for me and remind me to keep my head up! #scchat
#scchat A3 -- I don't look at my job as work. It is the place I spend my days and my mission field. A crazy day is energizing. After 28 years, you "Gotta love the crazy."
A3: I have great colleagues and administrators that are always so supportive when there it’s a rough day or if there is a problem that has been difficult to deal with. #scchat
A3: I also believe I (and others) are here for a short amount of time on this Earth and I want to help as many as possible. School Counseling in a building full of kids seems like a pretty great way to do this. #scchat
A3: Now as a counselor educator I get to witness the students' progression from wide eyed first semester grad student to career ready professionals who are going to change the lives of students and lead the profession. They push me to be better. #scchat
A1: I always taught students who struggled with reading or had difficulty with standardized tests. It was more than just academics, but always an underlying social/emotional issue! They intertwine so much, but I knew I wanted to do more! #scchat
A3: the drive to do better for my students and staff, the challenge and difference of everyday, the amazing colleagues I work with, the small successes, the moments of joy, connecting in a genuine way to kids and sharing smiles #scchat
Love the idea of the mission field. Passion inspires this profession. I always said to be a MS counselor you needed to be able to tap into your inner weirdo. #scchat
A3: Having an amazing intern. Just taking time to think about the process of what we do and discuss it with her re-ignites my drive to do it and do it the best I can. Also, an AP that shares my vision and hopes for the school. #scchat
A3: I also do this for all the people who told me I couldn't. They need to see that their negative thoughts about me were wrong and that people like me have immense potential! #scchat
A2 #scchat Also 1) when I'm able to help a child not harm themselves after suicide ideation, by referring to further support and 2) when a student comes out to me for the first time because they trust me. N no words to describe the honor
A3 #scchat My students. They are number one. I feel like I am needed to support them every single day. As cliché as it sounds, I told my interns there’s not a single day in my job where I don’t feel like I made a difference. What an honor.
OMG I think this all the time. I know the moment I get the permanent school counseling job, I will probably be moved to tears because I will finally have proved everybody wrong... that I can be successful. #scchat
#scchat having an intern is such an inspiring experience. My passion was completely reignited by sharing my love for the profession with my interns. It helped me return to what the profession is really about vs. what others might define it to be.
#scchat A3 -- I don't look at my job as work. It is the place I spend my days and my mission field. A crazy day is energizing. After 28 years, you "Gotta love the crazy."
A3: My passion for school counseling. The relationships I have with students and colleagues. That I get to learn everyday! When someone tells you that you helped them/changed their life/saved their life/helped them find life! #scchat
A3: Having an amazing intern. Just taking time to think about the process of what we do and discuss it with her re-ignites my drive to do it and do it the best I can. Also, an AP that shares my vision and hopes for the school. #scchat
I have a bachelor's degree/psych major as an intern this semester. Told she told me, "well, you guys have inspired me. I applied to grad school." She previously said she wasn't going to apply to grad school. #winning#scchat
#scchat A1: Originally I wanted to be a therapist for children who suffered abuse. After doing an internship, I realized I couldn't do that all day every day. School counseling was the middle ground where I could help but find an emotional balance with Academic & Career planning.
#scchat A3: Trying really hard to make self care a priority. I keep encouraging notes from Ss and read them from time to time. Being a part of an awesome team.
A3: I will say that too, the Interns and practicum students I have had have been so inspiring. I've been blessed with counseling students who were top-notch. @jacobheddinger and Ms. Tatum #scchat
A4: Very blessed to have been recognized several times in my school counseling life by the school board for creating innovative programming. Biggest honor was being selected as Faculty Mentor for Fall 2018 in the College of Education this last semester. I was humbled. #scchat
A4. The recognition that means the most comes from students. It’s the pictures, drawings, projects, cards, personal messages or emails I get from students that communicate “Hey, you’ve made a difference in my life.” That’s the only recognition I need. #scchat
A2: I have had the opportunity to do all grade levels, and the one highlight at each school is those moments when a student is better or less stressed than when they walked in my office! Even better is the fact they trusted to share with me in the 1st place! #scchat
A4: I've been recognized as a school counselor and counselor educator. I learned to leverage recognition to take on leadership and contribute in new ways. As for heartstrings, those are the notes from students and families in my "legacy box." Worth more than any award. #scchat
A4: In a way... I received an email from a well-respected school counseling expert telling me how much she was impressed with some infographics I developed to explain my role with staff. She used them during a PD. #scchat
#scchat A4 -- Presenting Monday at the Texas Professional School Counseling Conference. Going to be a blast! Starting my podcast has been very fulfilling.
I've been really trying to work on this myself and it's been a real struggle this year with the "new" professional me. It's not business as usual, is making me crazy, but will be better for me in the long run! #scchat
A4: Sometimes when being thanked by a student or parent, you don’t first realize the impact your work had because it’s part of your daily routine. #scchat
A4 #scchat Cards, letters, emails from parents, are the most important pieces of recognition to me. In addition I was given the kindness award many years ago, and two years ago given SCOY. I am very honored to do this work, I also know that recognition does not come often, it’s ok
A4) Does it count that our testing coordinator sent an email to the entire staff today that started with, "a huge shoutout to the counselors..."? LOL #scchat
A4: This year I was honored to be nominated by the district staff as the certified staff member of the month for my work with @sandyhook and #startwithhello#scchat
A2: The successes of kids, building those relationships. Taking my girls to see @MichelleObama and the @RedskinsCR Aspire program opportunities. Being nominated @FCPS_SCS SCOY and just today nominated for @VSCA SCOY! It’s been a fun and amazing ride. #scchat
A4: The heartstrings for me are the personal notes, messages, thank-you's that catch me off guard and surprise me....we don't get it too often....#scchat
A3: Sometimes, I honestly don’t know. At time, I feel so overwhelmed with the amount of work I have to do. Daily, I draw the energy from my kids, to make it through! The things they say and share, literally will have me in stitches! Humor is great therapy! 🖤#scchat
A4: I haven't been professionally recognized yet. Maybe one day! Right now, I'm proud of myself for starting up #hscchat again. I hope to get involved in local, state, and national school counselor associations eventually.
A4: Been blessed (a little too much!) to be recognized as Iowa MS Counselor of the year and @ASCAtweets Iowa #SCOY19 But, the recognition I get from students and co-workers is my favorite. Having someone say "Thanks for helping" is the best recognition I think. #scchat
A3: This has been one of my hardest years being a new high school counselor! But, you just do because it is always about kids! The paperwork and the learning about high school will come, but it is nothing compared to what some of our kids go through! #scchat
A4: I already mentioned it, but it was such an honor to represent my fellow counselors as SCOY for Henry County Schools. Other than this, the little notes and encouragement that I receive from my staff and students are life changing. #scchat
A4) The little things pull at my heartstrings so much. One of my favorite emails from a student was along the lines of, "thanks for listening. I've decided to honor my original commitment and stick it out." I love the maturity and sincerity. #scchat
A4: The pulling at the heartstrings come from the random and unexpected ntoes from students and parents. Don't always hear positives from parents, but when a note or an email comes through saying genuine thanks, it keeps me going. #scchat
A4: Earning RAMP. Advocating for the profession often. Being selected as elementary counselor of the year in my school district. And the most special are the cards and words that students, parents, teachers and administrators write to me. I cherish them. #scchat
A4: Yes, won a leadership award in my district for the work I do as a School Counsellor and a supervisor award ... while I was super grateful what really pulls on my hear strings is when I am in front of a student and they and I know that each of us in the room matters #scchat
#scchat A2: My first graduating class, the first time I successfully prevented a drop out, being intro'ed to parents as "the woman who helped me graduate," and watching this young mom finish school after 5 years of hardship.
When parents come to you, years later, with tears in their eyes thankful for how you helped their child. That's when I realize that our work extends far beyond the school house door.
@mrbrummet379 You're right the recognition from students (and their families). I've had many students and their parents tell me I'm the best SC ever. I've had students and parents hug me and tell me they don't want me to leave at the end of my subbing experiences. #scchat
A4: a few years ago during #NSCW the teachers made me card with a superhero on it with my face. They all signed it with really nice comments. I was very surprised and this tug at my heartstrings. I still have this displayed in my office #scchat
A3: Seizing moments to grow and remaining open to new possibilities. I have tried to expand my horizons through different PD and opportunities so I stay current. Also - having an intern is so grounding. I learned so much from mine and continue to as I watch her grow #scchat
It takes time, but you'll get there. I went to HS for 10 months last year with no prior experience. I loved it as much as elementary, even if the reasons I loved it were very different. #scchat
A4: Had a student yell "Hi Mr. Barry!!" across Wal-mart tonight, so that is recognition I guess. And even though I don't always like being recognized, shout-outs like that do make you feel good! #scchat
#scchat A3: Some days I feel like I get nothing done but then there are moments where a student seeks me out b/c I was the only one that they could talk to, or I stand at graduation & watch the students & the pride in their faces, and I remember this is what I was born to do.
A6: Hmmm.....not sure how I feel. I think of myself and my co-counselor as muscles or bones. 2 of many body pieces with different roles all connected and working together to keep the body (the school) running. #scchat
A6) We're the glue that holds it altogether for everyone. We are able to handle the emotions, but also serve an invaluable function to keep things going. #scchat
A6: Counselors help educators take the holistic approach with students. There is always more to each student’s story and helping others in school see that full story. #scchat
A4: I was nominated a Educator of the Year my second year as a counselor! But truly, just kids saying that I made an impact means more than any award! I know I am on the right track! I am not perfect and still need to grow and learn, but I still love my role as a SC! #scchat
A6: I do think school counselors have some of the biggest hearts humans can have though. I think you have to...you have a lot of kids that need love. #scchat
A6: SC's also have the ability to to check the pulse of the school culture and learning environment. We are intuitive by nature and can detect the areas to celebrate and areas in need of "attitude transplant" - systemic change. #scchat
Colleagues...this time goes so quickly. We have 2 more questions for tonight, but they are numbered out of order (had to cut questions). Just go with the Q number posted! HA #scchat
A6) I see counselors as essential staff. Without us, how would things keep going? If we run efficiently and effectively, it can be felt throughout the school. If we're weak, the rest of the school can feel it. #scchat
Colleagues...this time goes so quickly. We have 2 more questions for tonight, but they are numbered out of order (had to cut questions). Just go with the Q number posted! HA #scchat
A4: I’m falling behind as I’m eating dinner after #WSCA and chatting on here at the same time. Sometimes I feel like the School Counseling role is a behind the scenes kind of role, but I definitely feel recognized for what I do by Ss, staff, parents.#scchat
A4: Last year during our 8th Grade promotional ceremony, my Principal made me stand up (I was on stage) and gave me a S/O. My kids cheering pierced my ears; the tears fell from my eyes. Then this school year, I received this letter from an anonymous co-worker...TEARS! #scchat
Q7: Graduate students – what excites you most about becoming a school counselor? Current school counselors, what excites you most about the years ahead? #scchat
A6: In HS for last year and a half- it has been allowing and encouraging the students (&teachers) to slow down and acknowledge feelings and talk about them! We don’t have to be hyper focused on grades and college ALL the time. #scchat
A6: Staff, students, and parents see me as the go to person that cares and will be able to help with any problems. For me, counselors must have an open heart #scchat
#scchat A6 - I have always fought the idea that my impact makes a difference in my school climate. I'm just trying to find a way to serve kids. I'm now comfortable with the idea. I'll just keep serving kids as long as possible.
Q7: Graduate students – what excites you most about becoming a school counselor? Current school counselors, what excites you most about the years ahead? #scchat
@CounselorMs I agree. I have a huge heart. I LOVE my kids and their families. So in that sense I would be the heart of the school. But also with faculty too. I love the people I work with everyday. I feel like I balance everything out. #scchat
A6: I think we are in tune with the emotional state of the school as a whole. We have the skills to intervene and build up our students and stakeholders so they can keep doing what they need to do and we bring into view the gifts they have when they lose focus. #scchat
A7: We're beginning the RAMP process and getting some amazing training to help that happen. I'm really excited with how amazing the SC program is becoming and can't wait to see the impact. #scchat
Q7: Graduate students – what excites you most about becoming a school counselor? Current school counselors, what excites you most about the years ahead? #scchat
A7) Each year, I feel like we are better advocates. I'm hopeful that we will be loud enough and advocate enough for some school counselor ratio mandates and less non-counseling tasks assigned. We're better for Ss when we can focus on what we're trained to do. #scchat
A7: Great question! Can't wait to see the answers. I'm excited for society's focus and acceptance of mental health issues and the need for more support. I'm hopeful we will see increase in school counselors, mental health resources, trauma-informed caregivers, etc. #scchat
I’m starting this TOMORROW! I kept the yearbook from last year and taped all my hand written notes I received in it. I’m definitely going to put all the things together. This is such a much needed therapeutic technique! #scchat
In reply to
@CounselorMs, @zillysam, @EElementarySC, @judywilliams77
A7: What excites me most is still getting that official full-time school counseling job. When the search is finally over and I'm "right where I belong" to quote Hercules! I can't wait to have a school of my own with a caseload of kids and families to love and help! #scchat
A7: What excites me is preparing for the next chapter....10 years away. But thinking about grad. school and deeper learning in the next year or two to keep me growing and looking forward giving back in a different way. #scchat
A7: Our profession continuing to progress and always have a seat at the table. To increase our expertise. For every K-12 student in America to have a SC in their school. #scchat
A7: What excites me the most is knowing that there are such highly qualified, passionate, skilled new school counselors graduating every year who will lead this profession and advocate for students with all their hearts for years to come. #scchat
That I have had the privledge and honor to work in a career I have LOVED . Knowing that there are so many young School Counsellors coming up who are passionate and will do an even better job than I #scchat
Q7: Graduate students – what excites you most about becoming a school counselor? Current school counselors, what excites you most about the years ahead? #scchat
A6. I don’t necessarily know how I see myself, but I’m one that wants to help make people better. Whether it be a student, parent, or colleague, I want to help you see the good within yourself, being a light, that hopefully influences you in one way or another. #scchat
Yes! We got an invite to a "guidance counselor" event at a university. I RSVP'd but also took the time to request that they change the name to "school counselor" even in the future. I received a positive response and was thanked for taking the time to educate. #scchat#advocacy
#scchat A7 -- I try to keep it simple. Just focus on the next kid. I'm co-moderating this chat in May on "The 21st Century Counselor." I have an idea what that looks like but I'm excited to see what everyone else thinks.
A7: I'm excited about working smarter and being more focused in the work I do for our students. Balancing work/life more. And then, trying to figure out what comes next for me as a professional.....#scchat
A7: I'm of the "straddler" generation, in the profession both pre and post @ASCAtweets National Model. It has brought us SO far but I look forward to seeing states make real legislative changes to leverage the impact of better SC ratios and comprehensive SC programs. #scchat
Q7: Graduate students – what excites you most about becoming a school counselor? Current school counselors, what excites you most about the years ahead? #scchat
