Here we go!! Welcome to ! Tonight we're discussing "Approaching Professional Learning as a Designer." Please introduce yourself.
-
Excited to collaborate with all of you! Allie Rodman - Professional Learning Consultant and School Board Member from NJ. This summer I am designing professional learning experiences for teachers and leaders.
-
Are you ready? Q1 is coming up in one minute!

-
Morning/evening ! Tammy, teacher etc in Singapore

A1: I love "experience architecting"! When building a workshop, I think about creating similar experiences that I would also design for students: like using VTR, gallery walks, & different types of provocations, and such! So fun!
-
-
A2: Problem finding is pretty easy for people, I think, but it's the "what to do about it" and the follow through with it that is the struggle. It's important to work through processes with people so continuing the relationship after a workshop is crucial.
-
-
A2: Prepare ahead of time. Survey staff to find strengths and areas in need of strengthening. Strive to differentiate.
-
I wonder if stretching the status quo of professional learning requires focusing on things individuals don't want but really need. (Doing right now too so I'm thinking about this.)
-
A3: Introducing feelings of discomfort to stretch thinking. Plan in experiences that people will make an eye roll. We have to do these things to push thinking & be better for our students. It's what we expect of them, so I expect it of teachers in sessions.
-
-
Too often professional learning (one-off, multi-class, whatever) is done without significant reflection. Learning without reflecting is far less powerful. Reflection must be there.
-
-
Sure does! Makes it memorable - even if some groan at first haha!
-
A5: The product is in student learning or the work that leaders bring back to teachers & staff. You see it in the environment.

Trauma-informed practices
(Again, also doing tonight so my brain is in a very specific place. But it's still an important place.)
