Vanessa here from @AchieveInc in DC and thrilled to join the #NGSSchat tonight! I get to spend my days supporting the awesome #SciencePRP and helping states and districts implement the #NGSS. ⚗️🧪🧫🧬🔭🔬
This map shows all locations of power plants in the U.S. in 2018...how would you push S's thinking about this data in a #SciEd Unit? @NGSS_tweeps@NGSSphenomena#edchat#ngsschat@STEMTeachTools I might use a simple "See, Think, Wonder" as a starter to push S's observation skills
Please remember to include #NGSSchat in your tweets! We’ll be following a Q1/A1 format. Please respond to the question asked with an “A” and the number. Here comes question 1! 👏
Wendi Vogel, Grand Rapids area, MI, Science Consultant. It's getting pretty white over here; big snowflakes! Took 45mins to get home from normally 20min drive. #NGSSchat
Hi! Jesse from Illinois. Today I watched a doc on the plane, dragged the baby away from the dog bowl 15 times and pre-ordered a turkey. I’m a instructional coach in my 9ish to 5ish. #ngsschat
Q1: What is the biggest challenge for you or the educators you work with when translating the vision of the Framework & #NGSSinto classroom teaching & learning? What do you need more of? #NGSSchat
A1: Maybe it's not the biggest problem, but something came up today about student-centered instruction: how do you allow student questions to authentically drive instruction when your #NGSS unit is pre-planned? #NGSSchat
Q1: What is the biggest challenge for you or the educators you work with when translating the vision of the Framework & #NGSSinto classroom teaching & learning? What do you need more of? #NGSSchat
Ted Willard, NSTA standards geek, showing up to NGSS chat late because I’m setting up for our 3D workshop at the national harbor NSTA conference #ngsschat
I agree - this is huge. We have been addressing this a LOT with teachers this year and last year. I think we need to consider "plans" as travel guides not maps. There are a lot of shifts embedded in doing that..... #NGSSchat
Sometimes it seems that we are adding some theater to our science classrooms. If we predict the questions students might ask, we can pre-plan and act like their questions just gave us a great idea for a lesson! #NGSSchat
A1 #NGSSchat Also, many teachers I work with are not convinced that NGSS is better than what they do now. Hard to make the case with teachers that NGSS preps kids for lecture hall science at selective universities.
Q1: What is the biggest challenge for you or the educators you work with when translating the vision of the Framework & #NGSSinto classroom teaching & learning? What do you need more of? #NGSSchat
A1: The biggest challenge is time- time to fully implement the vision while meeting necessary state standards, and time to learn more about how to implement quality #ngss instruction. #ngsschat
Q1: What is the biggest challenge for you or the educators you work with when translating the vision of the Framework & #NGSSinto classroom teaching & learning? What do you need more of? #NGSSchat
A1 Once initial training #NGSS occurs, resources are needed. They are coming out and take while to write (which I understand, but districts are impatient due to assessment). Once in hands of Ts, need even more support w/ the how. Heavy lift. #NGSSchat
A1: For myself, and others I work with l, it is difficult when you realize that the lessons and units you have spent so much time, thought and energy on, are not as great as you thought that are. #ngsschat
A1: It started with too few resources. Now my problem is too many. :-) Sifting through the junk to find the good stuff. Also my personal challenge...Being quiet and letting students learn. #NGSSchat
A1 Getting the adequate time to dive into the work both in a PD session and during the practical application in the classroom. My teachers are loving our NGSS units but time for reflection is a challenge. #ngsschat
I agree - this is huge. We have been addressing this a LOT with teachers this year and last year. I think we need to consider "plans" as travel guides not maps. There are a lot of shifts embedded in doing that..... #NGSSchat
A1: biggest challenges is having time to create the storylines. And Finding phenomena that works best for the objective. Also making sure we still have enough time to cover old curriculumthat will still be covered on state exam. #NGSSchat
A1 Once initial training #NGSS occurs, resources are needed. They are coming out and take while to write (which I understand, but districts are impatient due to assessment). Once in hands of Ts, need even more support w/ the how. Heavy lift. #NGSSchat
A1: Letting go of instruction liked by students, parents, teachers, and administrators who are good at school. Embracing instruction that challenges these same people to wrestle with underlying concepts. #NGSSchat

Q1: What is the biggest challenge for you or the educators you work with when translating the vision of the Framework & #NGSSinto classroom teaching & learning? What do you need more of? #NGSSchat
Professional development, Ts that helped develop or trained in units easily accessible to others (like @hhereau who is amazing). PLCs if possible, TIME to unwrap resources, video and sharing new practice w/ other Ts, admin training, etc. #NGSSchat
100% - with admin support, you can make huge gains. I’ve been working w/ a few 3-5 Ts on progressions and analyzing student journals w/ CCC prompts. Better than any one shot PD I’ve ever done- but we need the support for the time. #ngsschat
A1: The vision of the Framework exists within a larger education system. We need more champions for the vision that influence that larger system. Teaching & learning 3D science is good for the whole child, but not all Ss are being given the opportunity. #NGSSChat
Q1: What is the biggest challenge for you or the educators you work with when translating the vision of the Framework & #NGSSinto classroom teaching & learning? What do you need more of? #NGSSchat
A1 #ngsschat : once we’ve determined which PEs to put together - choosing the phenomenon and sketching out the storyline (esp when the content is new at that grade level)
Q2 How could you use criterion-based reviews of instructional materials in your practice? How could these concrete examples of high-quality lessons + units? #NGSSchat
I love it! Your "theater" comment also made me think about the issue of over-relying on technology in science classrooms in the name of STEM, but sometimes letting actual science fall by the wayside. #NGSSchat
A1: I wish I had more aligned test items, especially in assessing the practices. Sometimes I feel like I don't know what we're aiming toward. #NGSSChat
Q2 more info :): This report from the @CarnegieCorp describes the need for high-quality science instructional materials as urgent and needed for translation of the #NGSSchat
Q2 How could you use criterion-based reviews of instructional materials in your practice? How could these concrete examples of high-quality lessons + units? #NGSSchat
A1 The biggest challenge facing teachers is being able to visualize NGSS teaching and learning so they self recognize needed shifts. Hence the need for resources like exemplar videos and the work of the PRP to support development of high quality examples.#NGSSCHAT
A2 We actually used criteria, constraints, and a decision matrix (a la @MTU_MiSTAR ) with our teachers to narrow down our pilot choices as a district. It's kinda amazing how engineering processes work in so many situations! #NGSSchat
A2: As a co-developer with educators of materials, such criterion-based reviews help us improve our own materials to better connect with students' interests and deepen assessments #NGSSChat
Q2 How could you use criterion-based reviews of instructional materials in your practice? How could these concrete examples of high-quality lessons + units? #NGSSchat
A1 Not all T's teaching science are science curriculum specialists. Many in Elem and MS are generalists and have equal demands in other disciplines. Have to make it approachable.#NGSSchat
I say "that's nice" and then roll my eyes when they aren't looking.
:-)
But more constructively, I look for opportunities to point out how we as educators can always be improving our practice. The ones I am most impressed with are in a state of continuous improvement.
#ngsschat
Productive talk NAILS speaking and listening ELA standards - better than they do in English class. CER is ELA's writing dream, and models are text. We got this, Science! #NGSSchat
Connecting this to the instructional materials question..... I think looking at well-designed, high-quality materials, with great educative features, is one of the only ways to respond to "I already do this." #NGSSchat
A2 We actually used criteria, constraints, and a decision matrix (a la @MTU_MiSTAR ) with our teachers to narrow down our pilot choices as a district. It's kinda amazing how engineering processes work in so many situations! #NGSSchat
A2: This Q sparked another related question in my mind: are criterion-based-reviewed units the best ones to use in a unit study across classrooms, or is better for teachers to try to do that evaluation as part of the process? Ya know, in their spare time... #NGSSchat
A2: seems like there is alot out criteria reviewed materials out there: https://t.co/xJQv11m839 so choosing one or two to focus on instead of trying to have every material possible #ngsschat
Such a great point Diana--1 of the things I love about criterion-based conversations & using tools like EQuIP and the Lesson Screener is that the focus is on improvement-- moving from where we are. Where I am differs by topic (assessment vs instruction, for example) #NGSSchat
A1: I use criteria like the EQuIP rubric to help teachers understand what is new and different about three-dimensional teaching and learning. #ngsschat
Q2 How could you use criterion-based reviews of instructional materials in your practice? How could these concrete examples of high-quality lessons + units? #NGSSchat
A2: I ❤️ this ? bc it’s at the core of what I do. Ts shouldn’t be expected to develop and implement and assess everything themselves. Not that they’re incapable but it’s too much. Using things like the #SciencePRP reviews, Ts can then adjust and adapt to meet S needs.
#NGSSchat
Just like with students who bring important knowledge with them to the classroom, it's important to build on what educators are already doing that is quality and then push them to the next level. Ask for what they are doing and start the conversation. #NGSSchat
A1: Finding good anchors (phenomena and design challenges) that connect to students' interests, experiences, and identities AND address PEs; shifting from "covering" topics to "figuring out" big ideas and crosscutting concepts using practices #NGSSChat
Q1: What is the biggest challenge for you or the educators you work with when translating the vision of the Framework & #NGSSinto classroom teaching & learning? What do you need more of? #NGSSchat
Q2 - I could see using them as models to compare our newly written NGSS units along with the EQuiP rubric to improve and enhance our curriculum. #ngsschat
Yes, absolutely. The shifts are hard for science teachers who majored in science, let alone other majors. We need to support teacher learning (esp K-5) in content and pedagogy. That’s a big ask, especially in a climate that values math and ELA above all.
#NGSSchat
A2 I usually recommend a T find something already vetted w/ EQuIP or written under standards writers/reviewers (such as @bpenuel) first. Then use the exemplar as a model if want to write their own. I never recommend Ts do it alone. Test and revise too. #NGSSchat
A2: I have been using criterion-based reviews as examples for PSTs to unpack and look for key components of high-quality materials across different frameworks (5E, Storylines, AST, etc.) #NGSSchat
Q3: The Science PRP uses the EQuIP rubric to facilitate discussions & feeddback about #NGSS quality design. Please share an example of how criterion-based discussion among peers have move your thinking forward.#NGSSchat
A2: We used parts of the EQuIP lesson screener with teachers developing & field testing materials for the first time. Digging into the criteria and reading them against materials we were co-developing really helped. #ngsschat
Q2 How could you use criterion-based reviews of instructional materials in your practice? How could these concrete examples of high-quality lessons + units? #NGSSchat
How can we gently support those ah-ha moments? How can we create opportunities to support the confrontation of our own misconceptions? This has been more powerful for me than anything else-- my own ah-ha moments #NGSSchat

Q1: What is the biggest challenge for you or the educators you work with when translating the vision of the Framework & #NGSSinto classroom teaching & learning? What do you need more of? #NGSSchat
A1 That is the exact situation that our district found ourselves in, so many of units have potential but still need work to make them truly 3D. #NGSSchat
A1 Once initial training #NGSS occurs, resources are needed. They are coming out and take while to write (which I understand, but districts are impatient due to assessment). Once in hands of Ts, need even more support w/ the how. Heavy lift. #NGSSchat
A3: Using evidence of the criterion seems to help teachers have discussions about the curriculum as a third point instead of using personal opinions to drive the discussion #NGSSchat
A2: The @AmbScienceTeach model is another way to engage Ts in evaluating 3D lessons b4 using more “official” rubrics. Did the lesson engage in big science ideas? Elicit student thinking? Engage in sense making and support changes? Work toward explanation of phenomena? #NGSSchat
Q2 How could you use criterion-based reviews of instructional materials in your practice? How could these concrete examples of high-quality lessons + units? #NGSSchat
A3: just really lucky to make time for these chats otherwise I would not have the knowledge I need to take the leap into NGSS lessons. Minimal discussion w dept but trying my best. #NGSSchat
A3: Feedback to our team using the new Task Screener from @AchieveInc@OfficialNGSS is helping us revise 3D assessments to be more compelling to students, by doing a better job of problematizing assessments. Tool is here: https://t.co/0IaFcXetvq#NGSSChat
Q3: The Science PRP uses the EQuIP rubric to facilitate discussions & feeddback about #NGSS quality design. Please share an example of how criterion-based discussion among peers have move your thinking forward.#NGSSchat
Q4: 1 of the expectations of the Framework= ALL students become careful consumers of sci & tech info. How can posted high-quality examples create critical consumers of instructional materials? What might be the dangers of making unsupported claims of #NGSS alignment? #NGSSchat

Q4: 1 of the expectations of the Framework= ALL students become careful consumers of sci & tech info. How can posted high-quality examples create critical consumers of instructional materials? What might be the dangers of making unsupported claims of #NGSS alignment? #NGSSchat
A3: I've seen teachers using or talking about a common curriculum allows everyone an entry point and a "common experience" to draw from. When everyone does there own things its more difficult to dig into the deep questions. #ngsschat
A4: High quality materials give educators a sense of what 3D learning is meant to be.
Less-than-high-quality materials that claim to be high quality can confuse educators of what high quality really looks like.
#ngsschat

Q4: 1 of the expectations of the Framework= ALL students become careful consumers of sci & tech info. How can posted high-quality examples create critical consumers of instructional materials? What might be the dangers of making unsupported claims of #NGSS alignment? #NGSSchat
A4 Dangers: Ts thinking materials are 3D but aren't. Ss being exposed to concepts above/ below grade level. Phenomenon not being used to drive instruction. #NGSSchat
I think it depends on how it’s framed. People don’t like to feel like what they’re doing is wrong. We’re wired to protect our beliefs. I struggle with this myself so don’t let me give you the impression that I’ve got it all figured out. :) #ngsschat
A4: To be a critical consumer, you have to spend time reviewing and calibrating with others, better yet, adapting and designing materials with guidance from those who have gone before #NGSSChat
Q4: 1 of the expectations of the Framework= ALL students become careful consumers of sci & tech info. How can posted high-quality examples create critical consumers of instructional materials? What might be the dangers of making unsupported claims of #NGSS alignment? #NGSSchat
I'd like data on how NGSS reaches ALL students. Maybe start teacher convos then with equity as the motivator. I hit brick walls with my teachers who are convinced NGSS will not prepare students for AP science in high school or lecture hall science in universities. #NGSSchat
Q3) Working on reviewing materials in a very deep and comprehensive way really brings the NGSS shifts into clear focus. Once I drank the koolaid I just had to make my own teaching live up to the dream! #NGSSchat
A4: The danger is that adoption committees will select materials that look familiar, but that don't reflect the shifts called for in the NGSS #NGSSChat
Q4: 1 of the expectations of the Framework= ALL students become careful consumers of sci & tech info. How can posted high-quality examples create critical consumers of instructional materials? What might be the dangers of making unsupported claims of #NGSS alignment? #NGSSchat
A4: Without evaluating a resource with the EQuIP rubric from @AchieveInc , curriculum can be labeled NGSS but its difficult for teachers or administrators to know if it reaches the three dimensions. #ngsschat
I think it depends on how it’s framed. People don’t like to feel like what they’re doing is wrong. We’re wired to protect our beliefs. I struggle with this myself so don’t let me give you the impression that I’ve got it all figured out. :) #ngsschat
Q3 There lies one of my challenges which is getting to this point as implementation discussion has been primarily focused on timing and scheduling lab time versus classroom time. #ngsschat
Follow up A4: The best way I know is give teachers agency in helping design or adapt materials. That way, it builds our collective capacity and the desire for new materials that reflect the shifts #NGSSChat
A4: I do think it's going to be messy. Not enough PD and not enough time for discussion and creation of these items. I definitely want vetted stuff that is "approved" but I also want to make some great things I do align with NGSS! #ngsschat
A4 Dangers: Ts thinking materials are 3D but aren't. Ss being exposed to concepts above/ below grade level. Phenomenon not being used to drive instruction. #NGSSchat
A4: One thing I know is Wayne County Michigan has amazing Ts pushing for high quality 3D science for all Ss. In #ngsschat tonight, @hhereau@geererc and @wandabryant - these are people I learn from and they champion #ScienceforAll
A4 - High quality examples really shift people's expectations about characteristics of materials. We come to expect phenomena, coherence, support for all learners..... instead of seeing these things as unusual or "extra" #ngsschat
A4: We discussed this image this semester - built a list with pros & cons of a scripted curriculum, vs more "wide-open" science curriculum. Especially with early career teachers vs long-term educators... #NGSSchat
Follow up to A4: Another way is to focus workshops on 3D assessment, as it gives teachers a sense of what kinds of performances are expected, and creates a sense of how and where current materials fall short #NGSSchat
A4: I sometimes run into materials that feel aligned to old standards, but tagged as NGSS. This sends the message not much has changed, when in truth, the rigor and content and relevance have all moved forward! #NGSSchat
A3: At our meeting yesterday, talking about the words “develop and use” for SEPs, DCIs, and CCCs with @ksscienceguy was enlightening. I hadn’t thought about the nuance of those two words, but it helped me think through scaffolding of the 3D. #ngsschat
Q3: The Science PRP uses the EQuIP rubric to facilitate discussions & feeddback about #NGSS quality design. Please share an example of how criterion-based discussion among peers have move your thinking forward.#NGSSchat

Q5: What are your experiences with tools like the EQuIP rubric? How can the EQuIP rubric, NGSS lesson Screener, PEEC or Nextgen TIME (all criterion-based tools) help to guide in the selection of new curriculum that claims to be designed for NGSS?
A4: It helps to have quality examples to better understand NGSS alignment. One danger that we may see soon is with publishers claiming NGSS alignment when districts are considering adoption #NGSSchat
Follow up: What info do you need to consider using these tools in your practice?
need to consider using these tools in your practice? #NGSSchat
Lesson Screener https://t.co/HZMvEo9ute
EQuIP Rubric https://t.co/Ode8mzNQSA
A4: I think if you are new you want scripted stuff- as you find what works long term educators want freedom to pull current, relevant items and still get them to a point of 3D activities/lessons. But back to A1: TIME #ngsschat
#ngsschat
Q5: What are your experiences with tools like the EQuIP rubric? How can the EQuIP rubric, NGSS lesson Screener, PEEC or Nextgen TIME (all criterion-based tools) help to guide in the selection of new curriculum that claims to be designed for NGSS?
Follow up A: You need good contrasting cases when evaluating materials -- materials that are closer to being aligned, as well as farther away. Just as you generally need at least two phenomena to generalize and see differences #NGSSChat
Follow up: What info do you need to consider using these tools in your practice?

I agree! Ts have to have admin support and have open dialogues with Ss and parents. Trying new things means sometimes they don't work 100% & we need to reevaluate. #ngsschat
#ngsschat

A5: EQuIP rubric and NGSS Lesson Screener has really helped me understand what to look for in NGSS Designed materials. How has it helped anyone with PD? #NGSSchat
I once asked an AP Sci T - what if NGSS means more Ss are ready, willing, & able to take AP? He said “Not everyone is cut out for AP.” Some folks don’t want #science4all so like Mr Rogers says, I look for the helpers...like you. #NGSSChat
A5 you can't skim through these tools, they are time consuming and require careful review of materials and the tool. You need to be trained to use them so you really understand what each criterion means. Tools are only as good as your understanding of how to use them #NGSSchat
Still thinking about @tjscience's A3 . . . Instead of paint by numbers (which is VERY scripted) what about learning complex pieces of music? Or mastering a tricky recipe? #ngsschat
I am heartened by the wealth of resources out there accessible to all teachers, like EQuIP, lesson screeners, PRP, and so much more. not to mention the great interactive communities that exist through Twitter, NGSS Learning Center, and virtual conferences and webinars #ngsschat
A5 Serving on the PRP and using the EQuIP rubric to evaluate lessons and units has greatly honed my understanding of NGSS learning design to a degree beyond anything else I have done. It is in itself a form of intense professional learning. #NGSSCHAT
trying out an open investigation and watching Ss make argument boards today despite feeling super uncomfortable that their data, evidence and justification might not be "great"-- but I am applauding them every step for trying along with me! #NGSSchat
Yes - I've used the screeners for lessons and assessments with teachers as we evaluate curricula for adoption. The one page screeners are far more useful IMO especially for teachers who aren't totally comfortable with NGSS to begin with. #NGSSchat
A5: The EQuIP rubric and Lesson Screener have allowed me to adjust "old" lessons to be more three-dimensional and incorporate phenomena. they're not perfect but I know what is good and where I need to make it better! #ngsschat
so where do we get training? How do we bring in the tools and a pro or trainer without costing an arm and a leg? And how do we get admin who are not versed in science to understand that this is not easy or quick fix? #NGSSchat HELP!
I am heartened by the wealth of resources out there accessible to all teachers, like EQuIP, lesson screeners, PRP, and so much more. not to mention the great interactive communities that exist through Twitter, NGSS Learning Center, and virtual conferences and webinars #ngsschat
Q6: A challenge to building a bank of quality materials is finding them. The PRP process is designed to be constructive+support continuous impvmt reviews below the top 2 cat of high-quality are not shared publicly. What would you need to consider submitting a lesson? #ngsschat
Band and Orchestra parents don’t come to concerts and expect to hear scales. Yet, many are content to ask “what grade did s/he get in science?” Why aren’t performance tasks valued in academic classes like they are in the arts? #NGSSChat
Yes. One of the challenges of NGSS is weaving those 3D's plus phenomena plus NoS and being accountable for it all over several grade levels...Ts cannot do it on their own in their spare time. #NGSSchat
Yes! If you’re familiar w the standards and your content I don’t feel like it’s that tough to create solid 3d experiences... but it does take time to get there. We need to tailor our instruction to our students’ needs and experiences to achieve best outcomes IMO #NGSSChat

This is so true! Education is practice as well and so many forget that! Not every thing students do need to be graded, but needs critical feedback for growth instead #ngsschat

I just sat through conferences tonight and every parent I explained SEPs and CCCs to was overly enthusiastic - they want that for their kids. They don't know we're offering it. Somehow we need to more widely communicate it. #NGSSchat

It seems that we need to help shift the culture in this direction. Maybe through celebrations and sharing out our "best of" products from performance tasks might be a good place to start #NGSSchat

Yes! also want to make one more quick point regarding Q4. Even with vetted materials (PRP approved, etc.), it's important that teachers and other stakeholders recognize that THEY ARE NOT PERFECT, and likely need to be adapted to specific contexts and improved otherwise #ngsschat

Those are both following/reciting w some room for collaboration & interpretation. I don’t go to the orchestra concert expecting my son & every other kid to play their own composition. Kids in our Sci classes need to create, evaluate, critique. Not rly the same thing? #NGSSChat
I was very nervous to submit a unit and but the feedback confirmed so much of my learning since it was written and pushed my thinking even more. #NGSSchat
Spot on; it’s very important to meet people where they are and influence how you can. And that word “honor” is really important because it’s respectful, not presuming to know all answers, and trust building. #ngsschat
