#ATChat I am a new fan of Guardians of the Galaxy, all of that crew are my super heros. They don't take themselves too seriously, yet they fight for the less fortunate.
Hi there, #ATchat! CAST here, located just outside of Boston, MA. Our favorite superhero? All of you awesome educators working tirelessly until learning has no limits.
Hi! I'm an education student in New Zealand and this is my first ed chat! I'm ready to learn how to use twitter as a forum for "staffroom" discussion! #ATchat

A1: As you may guess, before we look at tools for reading, we always try to clarify the GOAL for reading. The tool should always support progress toward the goal. #ATchat
A1: I know reading out loud is not technically an AT tool. I wanted to share that I have been reading out loud with post secondary students to vary demands and resources to optimize challenge #atchat
I see promise with @getspeechify from @cliffweitzman bit I have issues with it and the school firewall and cat structure that has evolved. But love the idea #ATchat
Those are pretty powerful, especially when teamed up with the high quality Alex voice. I love Speak Screen with Siri for using TTS with automatic page turning. #ATchat
We’re also big fans of @texthelp’s tools. Did you know we use their read-aloud tools on our new #UDL Guidelines website? Look for the play and stop buttons in the navigation bar. #ATchathttps://t.co/fTaDpjrccK

A2: Writing is such an important skill, but sometimes we default to writing as the goal when the goal really is composing. When we broaden the means, #UDL can really shine. #ATchat
also great for creating content in ASL with captions for a true UDL video experience. I did a chat last night with the questions in that format along with text. #Atchat
A2: Co:Writer by @DonJohnstonInc with its built-in topic dictionary, TTS and predictive text paired with STT tools. The new favorite of my students and teachers is @EasySpellingAid . So easy to use and has been a game changer for students with encoding weaknesses. #ATchat
A2 I like the collaboration tool in Google Suite and the ability to leave probing questions for my students to answer when they are writing an essay or prompt.
#ATCHat
I agree! I always coach teacher with the question "What is your purpose of writing? If it's for motor output, that's one avenue. If it's to demonstrate knowledge, that's another." Tool to task, and multiple means to get to the goal! #ATChat

Great tool for short reflections, vocabulary activities, social stories, book summaries. Your imagination is the limit. Very engaging and easy to use tool. #ATchat
Not to be a Debbie Downer but my school gives us such a hard time about using AT unless the AT is specifically stated in their IEP. Work around, anyone? #ATchat

When the goal for writing is to communicate a story I lean on the UDL checkpoint of multiple media for communication and give learners a few options #atchat

A2 - A great tool for UDL across all areas is SeeSaw - an electronic portfolio tool that uses drawing, text, audio recordings, video. Multiple uses and student driven. #ATchat
When my goal in math is to understand algorithms I use the UDL checkpoint: “foster collaboration and community” to have students use a few tools and compare answers and processes #atchat
A3 - Screencasting for math is essential UDL - so many students are empowered when they have control over viewing the screen casts, pausing for understanding. #ATchat
Check with your state guidelines. In Maine, we have different tools. Still a battle to allow the "tech" in AT students use in their daily practice for standardized tests. #ATChat
A3: There are some amazing tools out there to support math concepts and decoding math, but we often find engagement is a great entry point for supporting learners in this subject area. #ATchat
YES 👆🏻!!! Big supporter of using Explain Everything to support students particularly in the area of mathematics. Easy to use/create and airdrop between devices. Not only is this helpful for Ss but their parents too...Who can watch the videos to support the Ss at home! #ATchat
A3: yes, this! The concrete representational abstract approach with multiple models. There are online manipulatives and concept mapping tools to assist, but low tech works great, too. #atchat
A3: at UDL-IRN last year I attended a session in the brain and engagement- shared that researchers supports our brain is made to learn math in 3D .... don’t underestimate manipulatives and real application for engaging that 🧠#Atchat
I think having both available would be a good idea. The digital manipulatives allow for speed once you know what you're looking at, but there's something about the tangible pieces that help sometimes. #atchat
We're all in this together. Such a great community we have collectively. If you could see my smile right now, it would blind you like Ross from Friends! #ATChat
A3: In addition to Explain Everything, Panther Math Paper and @NotabilityApp have been helpful for students who require organizational support in mathematics. #atchat

The book clearly share ideas for naturally embedding #UDL--the principles, guidelines, and checkpoints same...with strong research behind it! It just has a wonderful new look and flow to it--It's like #UDLing the #UDL--at its best! #EOEchat#CoTeachat#UDLchat#ATchat
There’s really only ONE thing about @NBCBlacklist that I like....................................................................EVERYTHING!!!!!! 👍👏👍❤️ #TheBlacklist Be sure to use the hashtag tonight to get it Trending!!!!! @BlacklistRoom
A4: #STEM topics are some of our favorites! So many tools for engagement, representation, and action & expression, both high-tech and low- and no-tech. #ATchat
@AdobeSpark and Clips are two great all around tools that can be used in a variety of ways and offer lots of flexibility. I love the Creative Commons content in Spark and the included @apple content in Clips. #atchat

anything that makes science come alive & experience it! Making those experience accessible, through real experience or virtual, my friend @rmtc_wilmot with @rmtcdhh has a grant that helps students who are deaf and HH get involved with STEM and Science! Super cool #Atchat
A4: NGSS is great about focusing on concepts that allow for a variety of contexts... How about offering some choices rather than always having the whole class work through the same stream of inquiry? Not all phenomena are engaging/accessible to all Ss. #atchat
A5 start with the design and the needs of students. Designing for the average serves no one. Think student variability. AT is one powerful piece in our design work. @UDLMcGuffeySD#atchat
So true, and that's the beauty of #UDL. The guidelines empower Student choice in a way that makes sense for them. It literally is an elixir of awesomeness in unconditional instruction- beyond a buzzword! #ATChat

A5: AT use in a UDL classroom should have tools at the ready for any student to use and be seamlessly encorportated into the classroom environment with fluidity. Not as an add-on! #ATchat
A5: Just like anything else in a #UDL environment, #AT is going to look different depending on context, content, and the variability learners bring with them. The important piece is that everyone gets what they need to do their best learning, with barriers minimized. #ATchat
We need to keep asking for it. Important for no career path to be closed off due to these barriers. Already too few student with disabilities make it into STEM fields. #atchat
True Text-to-speech technology can be used to help with some of the literacy demands. Literacy is needed to get the textbook content, but the scientific thinking and applying the scientific method are different skills and should be open to all students. #atchat
We need to keep asking for it. Important for no career path to be closed off due to these barriers. Already too few student with disabilities make it into STEM fields. #atchat
I think that in part it’s because students with disabilities often have a schedule so replete with services, they miss out on opportunities for things like coding that are considered ‘enrichment.’ Need to work this into core tier 1 ed. #ATchat
A6: I think I'd be providing multiple options for expression. It's never fun having everything crammed into the form of a paper or written homework assignment.
#atchat
Wow! We are approaching "that time". I am so grateful to ALL of you for adding to the collective expertise and resources as we make connections with #AT and #UDL. It's almost time to hop onto #UDLChat! My heart is full from your contributions! #ATChat
