Educators, administrators, learners, and aficionados of world languages are encouraged to participate and share their experiences and input on various topics such as new ways to teach vocabulary, using music in the language classroom, and making standards-based grading valid. This chat is also unique in that it brings together language educators worldwide and from different contexts (elementary, secondary, higher education, etc.) and languages.

#langchat A1: formmative is SO much less stressful in my kiddos' eyes.

Q1 I've been trying to be better about formative checks for understanding, but also do exit tickets! Summative IPAs! #langchat
  • SraWilliams3 Jan 12 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: formative is constant-exit tickets, 'charlas', daily practice check ins #langchat

A1: formative reigns supreme in my class. Summative only happens every couple of weeks. Well, TRULY summative- once a quarter #langchat
  • MmeBlouwolff Jan 12 @ 8:10 PM EST
Ideally, form = me eyes wide open & taking notes on what I need to tweak/repeat/etc & Ss reflecting. Summative: lessons learned. #langchat

Multiple tweets work for us! #langchat

  • Lwbespanol Jan 12 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 daily formative q and a, clswk, wish it was better organized/formal. Summative depends - project, trad test. No IPAs yet. Soon!#langchat
  • KrisClimer Jan 12 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: formative in lots of forms, daily, logical breaks, summ/formative at end of units, big summative at semester. #langchat
  • mafarrace Jan 12 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 Formatives help set pace & direct how much we keep working w/pieces; Summative bring all pieces together & show score at point #langchat
  • profe_robbins Jan 12 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1- Tons of formative. Ss still so obsessed with grades and points all the time. 😕 #langchat
  • ksipes129 Jan 12 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: I need to be better at summative, but I do formative at the end of each unit. #langchat
  • SraWilliams3 Jan 12 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1b: summative is performance based. I alternate interpretive reading & listening, & writing with speaking. #langchat
  • doriecp Jan 12 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 since I'm at elem level, most assessment (F&S) are disguised as games&"activities". We do have district-wide summatives 2/year. #langchat
  • bjillmoore Jan 12 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1.Formative to learn and summative to show off what you have learned #langchat
  • MmeFarab Jan 12 @ 8:11 PM EST
What do you wish was organized better? #langchat
    In reply to @Lwbespanol
  • profeashley Jan 12 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: Summative assmtt often feel arbitrary. Why is that the end? Just always progressing, checking in on prgrss & moving forward. #langchat
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator Jan 12 @ 8:12 PM EST
#langchat A1 formative is anything I think they need to build up skills (research, grammar, vocab); summative is controlled, on-the-spot

#langchat A1: for those who say LOTS of formative, how do you decide which formative goes in gradebook?
  • srafischer Jan 12 @ 8:12 PM EST
#langchat A1 formative: show me what they are actually learning. Summative: weak (that's stating it nicely) form of ipa...also SLOs :(

A1c when I'm alternating, I still do other, but more formative as a check in #langchat
  • profeashley Jan 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: For me assessment is about a conversation. Share observations as feedback and students react to feedback and repeat #langchat
  • MmeFarab Jan 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
Do you give feedback? Use a rubric? Give performance indicators? #langchat
    In reply to @Lwbespanol

So you ONLY put summative in the gradebook? #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski
  • kballestrini Jan 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1 I’ve dropped any kind of high stakes summative assessment completely; everything is formative, embedded into natural flow #langchat
  • aris_ca Jan 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: formative assessments tend to be more informal and shorter. #langchat
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator Jan 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
yeah, I thought doing more summatives would make them more routine, lower stress #NOPE #langchat

A1 I would love to be able to do my Formatives in a Montessori way. But with 30 S's I don't think I can pull it off. #langchat
  • SraWienhold Jan 12 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1: Now that I'm moving towards SBG, I need to be better at ensuring I have multiple summative assessments for each mode #langchat

  • MmeCarbonneau Jan 12 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1: Formatives every class. Summatives for each unit. IPA based. E-Portfolios and lots of goal setting and reflecting on I Cans #langchat
  • KrisClimer Jan 12 @ 8:14 PM EST
My "quizzes" go in gradebook. IMO, form assessment is an attempt at a task, no matter how tiny, with feedback. #langchat
    In reply to @SraDentlinger
  • MmeFarab Jan 12 @ 8:14 PM EST
We have to, so I pick activities that can have timely/appropriate feedback and will show progress, not perfection. #langchat
    In reply to @SraDentlinger
  • MlleSulewski Jan 12 @ 8:14 PM EST
Typically; if we've practiced something enough for me to put in gradebk, I consider that "summative" for that task. #langchat
    In reply to @SraDentlinger
  • Lwbespanol Jan 12 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1 i had the students create a summative health and wellbeing survey for peers in another Sp 4 class - anxiously awaiting results! #langchat
