"One way to powerfully implement sm-group instruction is to embody belief that you, as teachers, can positively impact struggling learners in the time you have available to you." What are some different ways we can support learners through small-group instruction? #BookCampPD
Hi #bookcamppd ! Julie, School Psych, CT. Just enjoying spending time w/loved ones, reading, dancing, swimming, Spanish classes, and exploring passions this summer!
"One way to powerfully implement sm-group instruction is to embody belief that you, as teachers, can positively impact struggling learners in the time you have available to you." What are some different ways we can support learners through small-group instruction? #BookCampPD
A1: Small group instructions is a great place to build on small successes and empower struggling learners. I like that students can share their voices a bit more in the smaller groups. #BookCampPD

A1: Purposeful work. We have limited time, stop wasting it on filler stuff. Giving kids some colouring pages is not going to get them any closer to mastery but yet our intervention often turns into task driven versus student driven. #bookcamppd#g2great

A1: I'm a schl psy, so I do SEL centers, which has been great way to reach ALL Ss while supporting Ts & building relationships! I also take Span. classes & started doing lessons in Span. this year! Kids love it! #bookcamppd
A1 When conferencing with writers I like to pull a small group together who are working on the same issue. They often learn more from each other, than from me. #BookCampPD

A1: Be Intentional when pulling groups. Just because they are all struggling doesn’t mean everyone gets the same support.
I’ve found myself differentiating during small-groups as well...BECAUSE of intentionality #BookCampPD
A1: In our class, I have an area for students to get help it changes daily, but I love the idea of the three step process to structure our work. #BookCampPD
A1b: must provide interventions in variety of meaningful ways. Verbal, visual, kinesthetic, include S interests. Be very intentional in content & method of delivery in order to support ALL Ss. #bookcamppd

A1: Build a repertoire of small group types. This can work in ANY content area. Vary type according to learner pattern of need and time available to you. Win-Win #BookCampPD#SSLearners
A1: my small group in reading was a safe place where my struggling learners could find their voice and know it was ok to “not know yet.” A couple went from so very shy to confident learners. One became a peer tutor 😃 #BookCampPD
When observing I was always in awe when teachers posed questions of a higher level and when they paused long enough for students to think and create their responses. #BookCampPD

A2. Accessing and sharing the checklists (pages 158 - 178) would help in keeping record-keeping manageable. If a PLC team discusses and jointly decides to use common one's, monitoring progress of growth can be much easier. #BookCampPD
A2: Consider tweaking a record-keeping form you currently use to fit your PM needs. Envision times you can easily use. I use right after ML before independent practice. Perfect time to observe, jot, monitor. #BookCampPD#SSLearners
A2 Our school has a set schedule for taking running records, but I add in brief anecdotal notes I take on a daily basis for one or two students in each group daily. #BookCampPD

A3. The anchor texts that were shared on page 127 use children's literature and seem like a terrific connection to start their writing. Some children also love visuals/art to jump start their imaginations. #BookCampPD

A2: Keep it simple and intuitive. Some like checklists with predetermined indicators and evidence to look for. The best kind of record-keeping – the one that you will use! #BookCampPD#SSLearners
A2: I think this is amazing today because we have things like Google Forms and @Screencastify that we can use to collect data. Google forms has charts and everything for each individual Ss after each test. You can also have Ss record their own data in Google Sheets. #BookCampPD

A2 Find something that works! I love utilizing shorthand and some sort of system. Work samples are great too just to show what you’ve seen and to track progress. #BookCampPD
A2 I immediately think get the Ss involved in monitoring their data/progress with goal setting playlists and weekly check in (Monday) and check out (Friday) conferences shared btw T and S orally & digitally. #BookCampPD
A1b: must provide interventions in variety of meaningful ways. Verbal, visual, kinesthetic, include S interests. Be very intentional in content & method of delivery in order to support ALL Ss. #bookcamppd
A2: I keep records on my clipboard and color code kids that have mastered skills. That way I can take notes in real time as I work with students during class and reflect on them.after class to plan for the next day. #BookCampPD
A2: A lil different as schl psy, make data collection user friendly. I keep binder¬es for sm groups. Must be quick/easy, but meaningful. Can't spend lesson w/my face in the binder, so I create areas where I can check off needs&strengths, & do quick anecdotal notes. #bookcamppd
A3: Writers need support across the process, but often with rehearsal and generating ideas. Bring a “More Knowledgeable Other” into the conversation through mentor authors. Model, support, success. #BookCampPD#SSLearners
A3: Students can work on writing in math class by completing a multiple problem solving writing task. They need to come up with 3 ways to solve a problem and can conference with others and read the work of others if they are stuck. #bookcamppd
Yes! I had Ss this year who would not speak in larger groups, but were very comfortable in doing so in sm groups. Wonderful to see those Ss feeling safe to share their voices! #bookcamppd
A4. Do you know if very many educators use the resources that are mentioned before the introduction pages in the book? I wonder which one's they access the most? #BookCampPD
A3 I found that after spending hours giving feedback on drafts most Ss ignored it. When I flipped my feedback, their writing improved drastically (ALL of them). https://t.co/cNQ30RmjkE#BookCampPD
A3: I did a lot of scaffolding with my struggling writers. I chose books by certain authors so the Ss could relate and find writing about a topic less cumbersome. We also used guided writing #BookCampPD
As a scaffold or tool? Formula cards and post-it prompts are a great tool for math! Also, vary small groups according to purpose (pre teach, strategy lessons). #BookCampPD#SSLearners
A3 Learn about their struggles. If it’s just a fine motor/writing-utilize tech such as word predictive text, speech to text, or tech to assist. Checklists are great with visuals & examples assist many learners. #BookCampPD

Every child has the right and the capacity to learn! We, as teachers, have resources and tools that can help all learners thrive. SSL is 50 instructional moves that any teacher, in any discipline, can implement anytime. Plus, samples, and online site of all tools! #BookCampPD
A3 I’ve always valued the use of children’s books across levels to support Ss reading and writing processes. Complex reading/writing skills are always easier & motivating to tackle & achieve when presented through an interactive read aloud! #BookCampPD
A3: understand "what's getting in learner's way" & support w/visuals, kinesthetic, rubric, organizers, include tech (Flipgrid, google apps for edu). Allow Ss to respond in variety of ways to show understanding. #bookcamppd

Asking: What is this learner's greatest strength? and then: What is getting in this learner's way? Harness the power of small group instruction according to that! #BookCampPD#SSLearners
A3b: I saw on twitter, one T who let her Ss "create writing" w/post-its & art supplies. It was wonderful way to get them started w/writing process, and Ss LOVED it! #bookcamppd
