  • MissLovelyWE Feb 7 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1 I continue to learn from my students. They teach me how to coach them. What questions to ask, what number talks to have. As far as resources, @SteveWyborney and @gfletchy websites rock our math world daily. #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1: reading the latest math books is one way, going to conferences, reading blogs #octmchat
  • cmsmath Feb 7 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1 I continue to learn by reading, attending PD when I can and now - twitter. It has been an interesting 35 years - what a transition! #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Feb 7 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: Best resource are fellow teachers that continue to push, encourage, and empower me to grow. After my math peeps, it would be books that I read. #octmchat
  • AmyWettengel Feb 7 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: I learn any way I can - books, blogs, conferences, people. Most helpful resource is other people b/c they help me process, support, challenge me. #octmchat
  • miller_jen32 Feb 7 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1 I read as much as I can. Twitter is a wonderful learning tool. I go to conferences when possible and love webinars. Social media has been my favorite #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:37 PM EST
Twitter yes! Always great to collaboratewith my pln #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Feb 7 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: I have been lucky to work for a district that has provided some wonderful math PD opportunities through my career. Being involved in professional organizations has helped too. I’m never too old to learn! #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:38 PM EST
Last week someone on Twitter introduced me to a few podcasts so I’ve been listening to those in my car on the way to work #octmchat
  • aopete1 Feb 7 @ 8:38 PM EST
I guess it depends on how I define education. I started tutoring as a HS student in the 90s. Officially as a classroom teacher, this is Year 4. #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 7 @ 8:39 PM EST
You are so right. My teammate, @kinson2nd sent this in our group chat today. #octmchat
    In reply to @JacquiLehmkuhl, @kinson2nd
  • mlepcampbell Feb 7 @ 8:39 PM EST
We also learn much from you #octmchat
    In reply to @miller_jen32
  • chrissybug24 Feb 7 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1: In order to continue learning about math, education, and instructional practices... I love to read, scroll through twitter, attend conferences like @NCTM and @ohioctm ... and Math Teachers' Circles are a great way for me to remember what it's like to be a "student" #octmchat
  • malmess13 Feb 7 @ 8:39 PM EST
Mallory Messenger, 4th grade teacher, Dublin City Schools near Columbus. This is my 7th year #octmchat

  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:40 PM EST
Does your district have a system in place for observing others? #octmchat
    In reply to @aopete1
  • aopete1 Feb 7 @ 8:40 PM EST
    Which ones? #octmchat
    In reply to @Kidsmathtalk
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:41 PM EST
    Here is Q2 for #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:41 PM EST
Ten minute teacher is what I started with #octmchat
    In reply to @aopete1
  • MathRocks73 Feb 7 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: Reading books to stay current. I believe @JacquiLehmkuhl mentioned trying to read for 10 minutes a day. #octmchat
  • SmillieMath Feb 7 @ 8:43 PM EST
Just used #flipgrid for the first time. Amazed at the depth of vocabulary I heard being used. #octmchat
  • malmess13 Feb 7 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2: I love using 3-act tasks as an alternative pre-assessment. Typically, misconceptions and rich information about students’ thinking emerges. #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 7 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2 One of my favorite ways to assess student understanding is to have students videotape or audio record themselves teaching a math problem. We use @Seesaw to do this, but I’ve also used the regular camera on tablets before. #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:44 PM EST
Has anyone used @goformative? Would love to hear thoughts. #octmchat
  • aopete1 Feb 7 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 This year I am incorporating more games-based assessment like @ProdigyGame and standards-based grading. #octmchat
  • cmsmath Feb 7 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 I left the classroom in 2000 (goodness!) but love the current thinking about observational tools, formative assessments, exit tickets and rubrics. #octmchat
  • miller_jen32 Feb 7 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2. I try to use many ways to measure S success. Can they tell me? Show me? Draw, write, explain? Success isn't shown just in a test score.#octmchat
  • AmyWettengel Feb 7 @ 8:45 PM EST
Mathematical Mindsets @joboaler Visible Learning for Mathematics @john_hattie Principles to Action @NCTM #octmchat
    In reply to @MUCTM_, @joboaler, @john_hattie, @NCTM
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Feb 7 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2: I call them Math Chats. We have a schedule where each student gets at least one one on one math chat with yours truly. This has been a game changer for me. #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:45 PM EST
Fantastic! Can you say more about this? Do you use some type of recording form? #octmchat
    In reply to @malmess13
  • chrissybug24 Feb 7 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2: Last night, I joined @Kidsmathtalk and @Dactmath chatting about @NCTM #FormativeFive... we talked about the "ShowMe" strategy which gives us a glimpse into student thinking #octmchat
  • SmillieMath Feb 7 @ 8:46 PM EST
We did it in class as a formative assessment. Used a rubric that focused on practice standards. It was a great tool to assess justifying and critiquing. #octmchat
    In reply to @MUCTM_
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:46 PM EST
We want to hear more about this! #octmchat
    In reply to @JacquiLehmkuhl
  • chrissybug24 Feb 7 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2: I also love #NumberTalks to see what students "bring to the table" #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Feb 7 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2: Number Talks, Notice/Wonder activities, questioning, interviews are a few. These are assessing Ss thinking/understanding and providing feedback and not assessment for grades. #octmchat
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:47 PM EST
Q3 is coming up. Don’t forget to include #octmchat in each of your tweets.
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:48 PM EST
    Here is Q3 for #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 7 @ 8:48 PM EST
Both! I give Ss time to watch each other’s and parents watch and comment on it. I listen and comment while I’m prepping dinner. It’s a great individual snapshot of each kid. #octmchat
    In reply to @MUCTM_, @Seesaw
  • AmyWettengel Feb 7 @ 8:48 PM EST
A2: I always loved having kids journal - so eye opening and a great way to build relationships, Ss confidence and for me to uncover what they really know #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:48 PM EST
Do you have a specific form that you use for interviews? #octmchat
    In reply to @MathRocks73
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:48 PM EST
That sounds awesome! Thanks for sharing! #octmchat
    In reply to @MissLovelyWE, @Seesaw
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:49 PM EST
What kinds of topics do students journal on? #octmchat
    In reply to @AmyWettengel

  • chrissybug24 Feb 7 @ 8:51 PM EST
A3: I wish I would have known how much I could learn from visiting other classrooms... I wish I would have spent more of my planning bells in my colleagues classrooms (math and non-math) #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 7 @ 8:51 PM EST
A3 It has taken me three full years to feel comfortable with “wait time.” Not just for students, but me too. Students give me information that tells me so much about their thinking that sometimes I tell them I need a moment of think time before we move on. #octmchat
  • cmsmath Feb 7 @ 8:51 PM EST
A3 I so wish I would have had the "talk less, listen more" thinking. How much fun notice/wonder, 3 act tasks, open middle, number talks, (go on and on). #octmchat
  • miller_jen32 Feb 7 @ 8:52 PM EST
A3 I wish I would gave known the value of mistakes, for myself and students. So much to be learned, and so little to fear. I spent a lot of time needlessly worrying (took 20+ years) #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 7 @ 8:53 PM EST
It can take The form of “in the moment assessment” or planned instruction after you observe something that you want to explore more with the student. You literally ask the ss “show me” to prompt further modeling, representation, and discourse #octmchat
    In reply to @MissLovelyWE, @chrissybug24, @Dactmath, @NCTM
  • SmillieMath Feb 7 @ 8:53 PM EST
A3 It's a marathon not a sprint. Work on the art of questioning #makeschoolfunagain #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 7 @ 8:53 PM EST
AMEN to all of this, Catherine... if only I knew all this stuff 25 years ago (sorry, former students) #OCTMchat
    • cmsmath Feb 7 @ 8:51 PM EST
A3 I so wish I would have had the "talk less, listen more" thinking. How much fun notice/wonder, 3 act tasks, open middle, number talks, (go on and on). #octmchat
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:54 PM EST
Last question (Q4) is coming up in one minute #octmchat
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:54 PM EST
What a good reminder! I found in student teaching that it was so easy to stay comfortable in my own room, but I always learned when I went into other classrooms! #octmchat
    In reply to @chrissybug24
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:55 PM EST
    Here is Q4 for #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Feb 7 @ 8:55 PM EST
A3: I wish I would have joined OCTM sooner. The professional collaboration of passionate teachers is contagious. And share your voice, your voice matters to the world of education. We are indeed better together! #octmchat
  • AmyWettengel Feb 7 @ 8:56 PM EST
A3: more ways to connect with kids. Although I knew the importance of building relationships, there were so many early on I couldn't connect with and I needed more strategies! #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Feb 7 @ 8:56 PM EST
A3: constructive feedback is more important than grades, you can’t grade everything, stay connected, get involved, take advantage of PD opportunities, the kids will teach you tons, keep learning #octmchat
  • iprfl Feb 7 @ 8:56 PM EST
A3 timed multiplication/division tests were not helping my Ss number sense #octmchat
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 8:56 PM EST
Was there any strategy that helped you get through to those tough to reach kids? #octmchat
    In reply to @AmyWettengel
  • chrissybug24 Feb 7 @ 8:57 PM EST
Oh good... I saw that it was "delivered" today! I expect to see some pictures! :) (and let me know if you want my go-to recipe -- @Dellometry's son can testify about their goodness) :) #OCTMchat
    In reply to @thetaylorwood, @HamiltonCoESC, @ohioctm, @MUCTM_, @Dellometry
  • aopete1 Feb 7 @ 8:58 PM EST
A3 I spent my first two years trying to “be” other people I had observed. I am a lot more comfortable and confident in my own skin now. I still borrow great ideas from others, but add my own flair. #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 7 @ 8:59 PM EST
A4 I let students show me! By giving them choice of learning product they show how they learn best. I make sure students know that our classroom shelves are full of tools to which they can help themselves. (1/2) #octmchat
  • MUCTM_ Feb 7 @ 9:00 PM EST
Our chat is winding down, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop the conversation! Use #octmchat & continue sharing!
